Abstract:This paper addresses the problem of approximate merging of two adjacent B-spline curves into one B-spline curve. The basic idea of the approach is to find the conditions for precise merging of two B-spline curves, and perturb the control points of the curves by constrained optimization subject to satisfying these conditions. To obtain a merged curve without superfluous knots, we present a new knot adjustment algorithm for adjusting the end k knots of a kth order B-spline curve without changing its shape. The more general problem of merging curves to pass through some target points is also discussed.
B-spline Curve Fairing with Constraints

Abstract:In industry design and reverse engineering, the B-spline curve is an important tool for shape design and data fitting. The quality of final product shape is determined by the fairness of the B-spline curve directly. In this paper, a new method for fairing a B-spline curve is presented. The shape of a B-spline curve can be modified by adjusting its control points. The adjusting range of the control points is restricted by the β constraint, while the shape of the whole curve can be restricted by the α constraint. Finally, the fairing curve can be obtained by solving a linear system of equations. The method can be applied for global or local curve fairing. Examples of B-spline curve fairing from simulated and real data are presented to show the efficiency of the method.
A local fitting algorithm for converting planar curves to B-splines

Abstract:In this paper we present a local fitting algorithm for converting smooth planar curves to B-splines. For a smooth planar curve a set of points together with their tangent vectors are first sampled from the curve such that the connected polygon approximates the curve with high accuracy and inflexions are detected by the sampled data efficiently. Then, a G^1 continuous Bezier spline curve is obtained by fitting the sampled data with shape preservation as well as within a prescribed accuracy. Finally, the Bezier spline is merged into a C^2 continuous B-spline curve by subdivision and control points adjustment. The merging is guaranteed to be within another error bound and with no more inflexions than the Bezier spline. In addition to shape preserving and error control, this conversion algorithm also benefits that the knots are selected automatically and adaptively according to local shape and error bound. A few experimental results are included to demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the algorithm.

Abstract:This paper presents a new kind of uniform spline curve, named trigonometric polynomialB-splines, over space Ω = span{sint, cost, tk-3,tk-4,…,t,1} of which k is an arbitrary integerlarger than or equal to 3. We show that trigonometric polynomial B-spline curves have many similarV properties to traditional B-splines. Based on the explicit representation of the curve we have also presented the subdivision formulae for this new kind of curve. Since the new spline can include both polynomial curves and trigonometric curves as special cases without rational form, it can be used as an efficient new model for geometric design in the fields of CAD/CAM.

Abstract:This paper considers the problem of constructing a smooth surface to fit rows of data points. A special class of T-spline surfaces is examined, which is characterized to have a global knot vector in one parameter direction and individual knot vectors from row to row in the other parameter direction. These T-spline surfaces are suitable for lofted surface interpolation or approximation. A skinning algorithm using these T-spline surfaces is proposed, which does not require the knot compatibility of sectional curves. The algorithm consists of three main steps: generating sectional curves by interpolating data points of each row by a B-spline curve; computing the control curves of a skinning surface that interpolates the sectional curves; and approximating each control curve by a B-spline curve with fewer knots, which results in a T-spline surface. Compared with conventional B-spline surface skinning, the proposed T-spline surface skinning has two advantages. First, the sectional curves and the control curves of a T-spline surface can be constructed independently. Second, the generated T-spline skinning surface usually has much fewer control points than a lofted B-spline surface that fits the data points with the same error bound. Experimental examples have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:It has been found that errors will occur when the conventional algorithms for knot insertion are used for inserting knots near the endpoints of the knot vector into a uniform B-spline curve. Two algorithms for inserting new knots into B-spline curves are presented in this paper. Unlike the conventional algorithms such as the Boehm's or Olso-algorithm, the new algorithms can efficiently be used for inserting any knots into various B-spline curves including uniform and nonuniform B-spline curves. One of their applications is that the new algorithms can be used for degree raising of both uniform and nonuniform B-spline curves.
NURBS curve fairing based on non-uniform B-spline wavelet decomposition

Abstract:Taking advantage of orthogonality, locality and oscillation of non-uniform B-spline wavelets, a new fairing algorithm for rational B-spline curve was studied. Various knots selection methods were used to decompose the non-uniform rational B-spline(NURBS) curve.The global and local fairing for the NURBS curve were implemented through approximation. The problem of position and tangent preserving at end points were dealt with by adding constraints. The applications in RE-SOFT,a reverse engineering software developed by Zhejiang University, showed that the fairing algorithm based on non-uniform B-spline wavelets decomposition can efficiently remove the bad points and improve the quality of the curve.

Abstract:Robust curve design on surface meshes with flexible controls is useful in a wide range of applications but remains challenging. Most existing methods fall into one of the two strategies: one is to discretize a curve into a polyline, which is then optimized, and the other is to directly design smooth splines on meshes. While the former approach usually needs a sufficiently dense sampling of curve points, which is computational costly, the latter approach relaxes the sampling requirement but suffers from the lack of user control. To tackle these problems, we proposed a variational method for designing feature-aware B-spline curves on surface meshes. Given the recent advances in shell space construction methods, we could relax the B-spline curve inside a simplified shell mesh and evaluate its distance to the surface using equipped bijective mapping. To effectively minimize the distance between the curve and the surface, with additional controls in the form of both internal and external constraints, we applied the interior point method and adaptively inserted knots of the spline to increase its freedom and adjust the weighting during the iterations. When the curve is close enough to the surface, it can be efficiently sampled at any resolution and robustly projected to the surface. Experiments show that our method is more robust, has higher flexibility, and generates smoother results than existing methods.
RECONSTRUCTION OF SYMMETRIC B-SPLINE CURVES AND SURFACES

Abstract:A method to reconstruct symmetric B-spline curves and surfaces is presented.The symme- try property is realized by using symmetric knot vector and symmetric control points.Firstly,data points are divided into two parts based on the symmetry axis or symmetry plane extracted from data points.Then the divided data points are pararaeterized and a symmetric knot vector is selected in order to get symmetric B-spline basis functions.Constraint equations regarding the control points are deduced to keep the control points of the B-spline curve or surface to be symmetric with respect to the extracted symmetry axis or symmetry plane.Lastly,the constrained least squares fitting problem is solved with the Lagrange multiplier method.Two examples from industry are given to show that the proposed method is efficient,robust and able to meet the general engineering requirements.

Abstract:Curve fitting with splines is a fundamental problem in computer-aided design and engineering. However, how to choose the number of knots and how to place the knots in spline fitting remain a difficult issue. This paper presents a framework for computing knots (including the number and positions) in curve fitting based on a sparse optimization model. The framework consists of two steps: first, from a dense initial knot vector, a set of active knots is selected at which certain order derivative of the spline is discontinuous by solving a sparse optimization problem; second, we further remove redundant knots and adjust the positions of active knots to obtain the final knot vector. Our experiments show that the approximation spline curve obtained by our approach has less number of knots compared to existing methods. Particularly, when the data points are sampled dense enough from a spline, our algorithm can recover the ground truth knot vector and reproduce the spline.

Abstract:This paper presents a geometric algorithm for the generation of uniform cubic B-spline curves interpolating a sequence of data points under tangent and curvature vectors constraints. To satisfy these constraints, knot insertion is used to generate additional control points which are progressively repositioned using corresponding geometric rules. Compared to existing schemes, our approach is capable of handling plane as well as space curves, has local control, and avoids the solution of the typical linear system. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is illustrated through several comparative examples. Applications of the method in NC machining and shape design are also outlined.
Exact Penalty Method for Knot Selection of B-Spline Regression

Abstract:This paper presents a new approach to selecting knots at the same time as estimating the B-spline regression model. Such simultaneous selection of knots and model is not trivial, but our strategy can make it possible by employing a nonconvex regularization on the least square method that is usually applied. More specifically, motivated by the constraint that directly designates (the upper bound of) the number of knots to be used, we present an (unconstrained) regularized least square reformulation, which is later shown to be equivalent to the motivating cardinality-constrained formulation. The obtained formulation is further modified so that we can employ a proximal gradient-type algorithm, known as GIST, for a class of non-smooth non-convex optimization problems. We show that under a mild technical assumption, the algorithm is shown to reach a local minimum of the problem. Since it is shown that any local minimum of the problem satisfies the cardinality constraint, the proposed algorithm can be used to obtain a spline regression model that depends only on a designated number of knots at most. Numerical experiments demonstrate how our approach performs on synthetic and real data sets.

Abstract:A new algorithm for reducing control points in lofted surface interpolation to rows of data points is presented in this paper. The key step of surface lofting is to obtain a set of compatible B-spline curves interpolating each row. Given a set of points and their parameterization, a necessary and sufficient condition is proposed to determine the existence of interpolating B-spline curves defined on a given knot vector. Based on this condition, we first properly construct a common knot vector that guarantees the existence of interpolating B-spline curves to each row of points. Then we calculate a set of interpolating B-spline curves defined on the common knot vector by energy minimization. Using this method, fewer control points are employed while maintaining a visually pleasing shape of the lofted surface. Several experimental results demonstrate the usability and quality of the proposed method.

Abstract:B-spline curve extension is an important operation in computer aided design systems. In this paper, we present a new extension algorithm for B-spline curves. The algorithm uses curve unclamping to generate a uniform B-spline curve segment from the original curve and gradually extends the segment to pass through every target point. Algorithms of uniform B-spline curves are used such that our algorithm has a low time cost and can easily handle arbitrary-order derivative constraints at the target points. Generalization for non-uniform rational B-spline curve extension is also discussed, and examples show the efficiency of our method.

Abstract:Pottmann et al. propose an iterative optimization scheme for approximating a target curve with a B-spline curve based on square distance minimization, or SDM. The main advantage of SDM is that it does not need a parameterization of data points on the target curve. Starting with an initial B-spline curve, this scheme makes an active B-spline curve converge faster towards the target curve and produces a better approximating B-spline curve than existing methods relying on data point parameterization. However, SDM is sensitive to the initial B-spline curve due to its local nature of optimization. To address this, we integrate SDM with procedures for automatically adjusting both the number and locations of the control points of the active spline curve. This leads to a method that is more robust and applicable than SDM used alone. Furthermore, it is observed that the most time consuming part of SDM is the repeated computation of the foot-point on the target curve of a sample point on the active B-spline curve. In our implementation, we speed up the foot-point computation by pre-computing the distance field of the target curve using the Fast Marching Method. Experimental examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. Problems for further research are discussed.

Abstract:Surface blending is a useful operation in geometric design for rounding sharp edges or corners. Meanwhile, NURBS has already become the de facto industrial standard in existing CAD/CAM systems. Therefore, it is required to study how to blend two B -spline surfaces. However, two arbitrary B -spline surfaces (called base surfaces) are hard to be blended with a B -spline surface (called blending surface) because the knot vectors of the two base surfaces are usually mismatched. In this paper, we proposed a curve-based spline representation, i.e., the semi-structured B-spline surface, which is generated by skinning a series of B -spline curves with different knot vectors. By assigning suitable knot vectors to the head and tail skinned curves, the semi-structured B -spline surface can blend two B -spline surfaces smoothly without disturbing them at all. We formulated the B -spline surface blending problem as an optimization problem with continuity constraints, and the continuity between the base and blending surfaces can reach G 2 or C 2 . Examples illustrated in this paper validate the effectiveness and efficiency of our method.
Solutions to problems of the classical algorithms for degree elevation of B-spline curves

Abstract:Degree elevation of B-spline curves is a common technique in surface design and computer aided geometric modeling. It is a fundamental tool in CAD systems based on B-spline, and frequently used in geometric design of composite curves, sweeping and skinning surfaces. Unfortunately, it has been found that there are serious errors in the classical algorithms for degree raising when used for degree elevation of the B-spline curves except periodic and endpoint-interpolating B-spline curves. In this paper two improved algorithms are presented for solving the problems of Degree Elevation of B-spline Curves published in Computer Aided Geometric Design by Prautzsch in 1984. One of them is based on a general method for inserting knots into B-spline curves, and another on converting the original curves into endpoint-interpolating curves.

Abstract:Recently, the use of B-spline curves/surfaces to fit point clouds by iteratively repositioning the B-spline's control points on the basis of geometrical rules has gained in popularity because of its simplicity, scalability, and generality. We distinguish between two types of fitting, interpolation and approximation. Interpolation generates a B-spline surface that passes through the data points, whereas approximation generates a B-spline surface that passes near the data points, minimizing the deviation of the surface from the data points. For surface interpolation, the data points are assumed to be in grids, whereas for surface approximation the data points are assumed to be randomly distributed. In this paper, an iterative geometric interpolation method, as well as an approximation method, which is based on the framework of the iterative geometric interpolation algorithm, is discussed. These two iterative methods are compared with standard fitting methods using some complex examples, and the advantages and shortcomings of our algorithms are discussed. Furthermore, we introduce two methods to accelerate the iterative geometric interpolation algorithm, as well as a method to impose geometric constraints, such as reflectional symmetry, on the iterative geometric interpolation process, and a novel fairing method for non-uniform complex data points. Complex examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.
