Abstract:Here a continuous axial-spiral phase microplate (CAsPP), based on combining a logarithmic axicon and a spiral phase plate, was proposed for generating high-quality higher-order Bessel vortex beams. The novel optical component implemented via femtosecond laser direct writing possesses compact geometry and unique optical properties. The CAsPP with a diameter of 80 µm possesses a controllable long focus ranging from 50 to 600 µm and exhibits a good self-healing ability after free transmission of about 45 µm. Unique optical properties were demonstrated in both experiments and simulations, which were well matched to each other. This Letter provides new opportunities for applications in integrated optics, optical trapping, laser machining, and information reconstruction.

Abstract:Focused by a high numerical-aperture objective in free space, the cylindrical vector beam phase-encoded by vortex phase plate with higher topological charge was capable to generate the doughnut-shaped spot in the vicinity of the focal region. The width of the dark focal spot was manipulated by the phase plate with different topological charge. The relationship between the properties of the focal spot and the vortex phase plate was explicitly analyzed for the input beam with different cylindrical vector polarization. Furthermore, the experimental verification was undertaken at the incidence beam λ=635nm with the radial and azimuthal polarization. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with the theoretical calculation.

Abstract:We theoretically demonstrate the creation of sub-wavelength focal spot with ultra long depth of focus (DOF) non-diffracting. To achieve a sub-half-wavelength focal spot (0.4λ) with modulation, extended DOF (over 9.5λ) in vacuum, an integration of amplitude phase encoding, cylindrical polarization and the combination of dual-beams is utilized. Further analysis also predicts that a flattop intensity distribution along z axis can be observed around the ideal focus point.

Abstract:The high-NA focusing properties of vector vortex beams are studied theoretically and experimentally. The vector vortex beams are generated by space-variant segmented subwavelength metallic gratings first. Then the mathematical expressions for the focused fields are derived based on the vector diffraction theory, and some numerical simulations are presented that show that the focused fields are not dark at the center and the focusing spot size of vector vortex beams with high topological charges approaches the diffraction limitation at high NA. Finally, to verify the theoretical analysis, the tightly focused fields are measured based on a confocal microscopy system when the NA of the objective lens is 0.90. The research results confirm the potential of vector vortex beams in some applications, such as optical trapping, laser printing, lithography, and material processing. Abstract:The propagation of a new type of Ince-Gaussian-like beam along a predesigned parabolic trajectory in the free space is investigated numerically and experimentally. The Ince-Gaussian-like beam breaks the characteristic that the shape remains invariant during propagation and it obtains the property of self-focusing that the unmodulated Ince-Gaussian beam has not. The enhancement of the quadratic coefficients Ω of parabolic trajectories increases the focus times but shortens the focal depth. In addition, we also investigate the effect of the parameter of the ellipticity ɛ , which only affects the maximum intensity and the intensity distribution after the focusing. Furthermore, different modes, orders p and degrees m of the Ince-Gaussian-like beam also influence the propagation patterns. Moreover, we investigate the self-healing property of the IGLB by introducing a soft well function. We anticipate that our works have potential value in the laser energy focus and optical transport.

Abstract:We present a numerical model to deal with optical nonlinear processes at a strong focusing situation where general methods possibly fail to work. We find a special curvilinear coordinate system through which a new paraxial wave equation set is developed and its eigenmode transmission solutions are derived. On the basis of the wave equations, a detailed algorithm for second-harmonic generation is proposed with the Fourier-space method. Numerical results in non-walk-off and walk-off cases show that the new model can handle wave interactions on the strong focusing L/b >> 1 condition within a relative small sampling grid, with which traditional methods will lose efficiency, and can provide unique features in comparison with the model in a Cartesian coordinate system. Abstract:We propose an effective scheme to interpret the abruptly autofocusing vortex beam. In our scheme, a set of analytical formulae are deduced to well predict not only the global caustic, before and after the focal plane, but also the focusing properties of the abruptly autofocusing vortex beam, including the axial position as well as the diameter of focal ring. Our analytical results are in excellent agreement with both numerical simulation and experimental results. Besides, we apply our analytical technique to the fine manipulation of the focusing properties with a scaling factor. This set of methods would be beneficial to a broad range of applications such as particle trapping and micromachinings.

Abstract:We introduce the circle Pearcey Gaussian vortex (CPGV) beams in a harmonic potential for the first time and investigate their abruptly autofocusing properties by theoretical analysis and numerical simulations in this paper. By varying the spatial distribution factors, one can effectively control the propagating dynamics of the beams, including the position of the focus, the radius of the focal light spot and the intensity contrast. Meanwhile, the magnitude of topological charges and the position of the vortex can alter the focal pattern and the intensity contrast. Furthermore, the position of the focus can be flexibly controlled in a tiny range by adjusting the scaled parameter of the incident beam properly.

Abstract:By using the ray-tracing method based on geometric optics, we studied the propagating and focusing characteristics of vortex beams with a top-hat intensity distribution. An intuitive mathematical model is established for the propagation and focusing of vortex beams, revealing the mechanisms and physics underlying the spatial evolution, e.g., the dark spot formation in the center of a vortex beam, the relationship between the radius of the dark spot and the propagation distance, and the rotational angle varying with the propagation distance for an azimuthal asymmetric vortex beam. The experimental observations are consistent with theoretical predictions. The results and findings are helpful in intuitively understanding the propagation and evolution of specific vortex beams; therefore, they are of significance for explorations of the novel properties of twisted vortex beams and their applications.
