Statistical principles in low-level vision

Abstract:The goal of low-level vision is to obtain a simple but informative description of the raw image intensity data, so that this description can be used for higher level tasks such as object recognition. In order to solve this data analysis problem, it is important to understand the underlying statistical principles. In this article, we study three existing statistical principles in low-level vision, namely, the sparse coding principle, the minimax entropy principle, and the meaningful alignment principle. Although these three principles capture the redundancies and regularities of the observed image in their own different ways, we show that they all seek to identify a small number of constraints to restrict the observed image within an image ensemble of minimum volume.
