Abstract:In this paper, we have used an incomplete set of manual delineations for 7 fetal brain structures in magnetic resonance (MR) images of 76 normal controls, as a starting point to create a complete set with an additional 5 structures using a semi-automatic approach. The resulting extended label set covers a wide gestational age (GA) range in fetal development (22.42 to 37.71 weeks) and was used as input for testing automated segmentation methods on this group. This was done either by generating probabilistic spatio-temporal maps of the structures that may act as age-specific priors in an expectation-maximization (EM) framework or by treating the full set of labeled data as a comprehensive repository in an application of non-local patch-based segmentation (PBS). The automated methods were compared against each other based on their cross-validated accuracy in reproducing the manual segmentations by calculating symmetric surface distance errors and Dice overlaps. The results indicate that EM is a superior method to PBS for segmenting tissues with strong intensity boundaries such as cortical gray matter. However, EM frequently misclassified voxels of adjacent tissues with similar intensities, for example where the cerebellum joins the pons. Conversely, PBS was more robust in this situation. Thus, a hybridized method combining both approaches could be the focus for future work.
