Abstract:Traditional graph based sentence ranking algorithms such as LexRank and HITS model the documents to be summarized as a text graph where nodes represent sentences and edges represent pairwise relations. Such modeling cannot capture complex group relationship shared among multiple sentences which can be useful for sentence ranking. In this paper, we propose to take advantage of hypergraph to remedy this defect. In a text hypergraph, nodes still represent sentences, yet hyperedges are allowed to connect more than two sentences. With a text hypergraph, we are thus able to integrate both group relationship and pairwise relationship into a unified framework. Then, a hypergraph based semi-supervised sentence ranking algorithm is developed for query-oriented extractive summarization, where the influence of query is propagated to sentences through the structure of the constructed text hypergraph. When evaluated on DUC datasets, performance of our proposed approach shows improvements compared to a number of baseline systems.
Exploring Simultaneous Keyword and Key Sentence Extraction

Abstract:Summarization and Keyword Selection are two important tasks in NLP community. Although both aim to summarize the source articles, they are usually treated separately by using sentences or words. In this paper, we propose a two-level graph based ranking algorithm to generate summarization and extract keywords at the same time. Previous works have reached a consensus that important sentence is composed by important keywords. In this paper, we further study the mutual impact between them through context analysis. We use Wikipedia to build a two-level concept-based graph, instead of traditional term-based graph, to express their homogenous relationship and heterogeneous relationship. We run PageRank and HITS rank on the graph to adjust both homogenous and heterogeneous relationships. A more reasonable relatedness value will be got for key sentence selection and keyword selection. We evaluate our algorithm on TAC 2011 data set. Traditional term-based approach achieves a score of 0.255 in ROUGE-1 and a score of 0.037 and ROUGE-2 and our approach can improve them to 0.323 and 0.048 separately.

Abstract:Summarization can facilitate users to acquire large amount of information. This paper introduces a Chinese news events summarization system based on a predefined template. The system automatically collects query-related news online, applies Language model to detect event related information, calculates word frequencies based on semantic meaning and uses information fusion techniques to merge the results. After experiments on 50 events, the system can achieve the average of 82.1% precision based on human judgment.
AttSum: Joint Learning of Focusing and Summarization with Neural Attention.

Abstract:Query relevance ranking and sentence saliency ranking are the two main tasks in extractive query-focused summarization. Previous supervised summarization systems often perform the two tasks in isolation. However, since reference summaries are the trade-off between relevance and saliency, using them as supervision, neither of the two rankers could be trained well. This paper proposes a novel summarization system called AttSum, which tackles the two tasks jointly. It automatically learns distributed representations for sentences as well as the document cluster. Meanwhile, it applies the attention mechanism to simulate the attentive reading of human behavior when a query is given. Extensive experiments are conducted on DUC query-focused summarization benchmark datasets. Without using any hand-crafted features, AttSum achieves competitive performance. It is also observed that the sentences recognized to focus on the query indeed meet the query need.

Abstract:The increasing availability of semantic data has substantially enhanced Web applications. Semantic data such as RDF data is commonly represented as entity-property-value triples. The magnitude of semantic data, in particular the large number of triples describing an entity, could overload users with excessive amounts of information. This has motivated fruitful research on automated generation of summaries for entity descriptions to satisfy users' information needs efficiently and effectively. We focus on this prominent topic of entity summarization, and our research objective is to present the first comprehensive survey of entity summarization research. Rather than separately reviewing each method, our contributions include (1) identifying and classifying technical features of existing methods to form a high-level overview, (2) identifying and classifying frameworks for combining multiple technical features adopted by existing methods, (3) collecting known benchmarks for intrinsic evaluation and efforts for extrinsic evaluation, and (4) suggesting research directions for future work. By investigating the literature, we synthesized two hierarchies of techniques. The first hierarchy categories generic technical features into several perspectives: frequency and centrality, informativeness, and diversity and coverage. In the second hierarchy we present domain-specific and task-specific technical features, including the use of domain knowledge, context awareness, and personalization. Our review demonstrated that existing methods are mainly unsupervised and they combine multiple technical features using various frameworks: random surfer models, similarity-based grouping, MMR-like re-ranking, or combinatorial optimization. We also found a few deep learning based methods in recent research.

Abstract:Query-oriented relevance, information richness and novelty are important requirements in query-focused summarization, which, to a considerable extent, determine the summary quality. Previous work either rarely took into account all above demands simultaneously or dealt with part of them in the dynamic process of choosing sentences to generate a summary. In this paper, we propose a novel approach that integrates all these requirements skillfully by treating them as sentence features, making that the finally generated summary could fully reflect the combinational effect of these properties. Experimental results on the DUC2005 and DUC2006 datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.
Query-Focused Summarization by Combining Topic Model and Affinity Propagation

Abstract:The goal of query-focused summarization is to extract a summary for a given query from the document collection. Although much work has been done for this problem, there are still many challenging issues: (1) The length of the summary is predefined by, for example, the number of word tokens or the number of sentences. (2) A query usually asks for information of several perspectives (topics); however existing methods cannot capture topical aspects with respect to the query. In this paper, we propose a novel approach by combining statistical topic model and affinity propagation. Specifically, the topic model, called qLDA, can simultaneously model documents and the query. Moreover, the affinity propagation can automatically discover key sentences from the document collection without predefining the length of the summary. Experimental results on DUC05 and DUC06 data sets show that our approach is effective and the summarization performance is better than baseline methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a framework to produce topic-focused summarization of news events, based on biased snippet extraction and selection. Through our approach, a summarization only retaining information related to a predefined topic (e.g. economy or politics) can be generated for a given news event to satisfy users with specific interests. To better balance coherence and coverage of the summarization, snippets rather than sentences or paragraphs are used as textual components. Topic signature is employed in snippet extraction and selection in order to emphasize the topic-biased information. Experiments conducted on real data demonstrate a good coverage, topic-relevancy, and content coherence of the summaries generated by our approach.
Entity Summarization via Exploiting Description Complementarity and Salience

Abstract:Entity summarization is a novel and efficient way to understand real-world facts and solve the increasing information overload problem in large-scale knowledge graphs (KG). Existing studies mainly rely on ranking independent entity descriptions as a list under a certain scoring standard such as importance. However, they often ignore the relatedness and even semantic overlap between individual descriptions. This may seriously interfere with the contribution judgment of descriptions for entity summarization. Actually, the entity summary is a whole to comprehensively integrate the main aspects of entity descriptions, which could be naturally treated as a set. Unfortunately, the exploration of these set characteristics for entity summarization is still an open issue with great challenges. To that end, we draw inspiration from a set completion perspective and propose an entity summarization method with complementarity and salience (ESCS) to deeply exploit description complementarity and salience in order to form a summary set for the target entity. Specifically, we first generate entity description representations with textual features in the description embedding module. For the purpose of learning complementary relationships within the entire summary set, we devise a bi-directional long short-term memory structure to capture global complementarity for each summary in the summary complementarity learning module. Meanwhile, in order to estimate the salience of individual descriptions, we calculate similarities between semantic embeddings of the target entity and its property-value pairs in the description salience learning module. Next, with a joint learning stage, we can optimize ESCS from a set completion perspective. Finally, a summary generation strategy is designed to infer the entire summary set step-by-step for the target entity. Extensive experiments on a public benchmark have clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of ESCS and revealed the potential of set completion in entity summarization task.

Abstract:Despite significant advances in abstract summarization models based on pretrained language models, an unresolved issue is that the generated summaries are not always faithful to the input documents, meaning they are prone to factual inaccuracies. To address this problem, a fact-consistency enhancement model based on semantic graphs and entity pointer networks is proposed. This model assists enhances the summarization process by utilizing fine-grained semantic graphs constructed from triple extraction and dependency parsing tasks, reducing the occurrence of internal hallucination errors. Furthermore, the model introduces an entity pointer network to capture factual entities within the input text and further penalizes entity-level discrepancies between the generated summaries and the original texts through an entity consistency loss. Experiments conducted on the CNN/DM dataset show that the joint use of fine-grained semantic graphs and entity pointer networks effectively improves the factual consistency of the model-generated summaries compared to baseline models.

Abstract:PurposeThe purpose of this research is to develop a method for automatic construction of multi‐document summaries of sets of news articles that might be retrieved by a web search engine in response to a user query.Design/methodology/approachBased on the cross‐document discourse analysis, an event‐based framework is proposed for integrating and organizing information extracted from different news articles. It has a hierarchical structure in which the summarized information is presented at the top level and more detailed information given at the lower levels. A tree‐view interface was implemented for displaying a multi‐document summary based on the framework. A preliminary user evaluation was performed by comparing the framework‐based summaries against the sentence‐based summaries.FindingsIn a small evaluation, all the human subjects preferred the framework‐based summaries to the sentence‐based summaries. It indicates that the event‐based framework is an effective way to summarize a set of news articles reporting an event or a series of relevant events.Research limitations/implicationsLimited to event‐based news articles only, not applicable to news critiques and other kinds of news articles. A summarization system based on the event‐based framework is being implemented.Practical implicationsMulti‐document summarization of news articles can adopt the proposed event‐based framework.Originality/valueAn event‐based framework for summarizing sets of news articles was developed and evaluated using a tree‐view interface for displaying such summaries.
Enhancing Query-oriented Summarization based on Sentence Wikification

Abstract:Query-oriented summarization is primarily concerned with synthesizing an informative and well-organized summary from a document collection for a given query. In the existing summarization methods, each individual sentence in the document collection is represented as Bag of Words (BOW). In this paper, we propose a novel framework which improves query-oriented summarization via sentence wikification, i.e., enriching sentence representation with Wikipedia concepts. Furthermore, we exploit semantic relatedness of Wikipedia concepts as a smoothing factor in sentence wikification. The experiments with benchmark dataset show that sentence wikification performs effectively for improving query-oriented summarization, and helps to generate more high-quality summaries.

Abstract:Query-focused summarisation (QFS) in research articles is usually used to help researchers to sum up content related to specific aspects of research articles. However, most QFS approaches failed to consider the inherent structure of research articles to speculate the semantic functions of sentences to make summarisations relate to the given aspect more precisely. Systematic functional linguistic studies suggested that research articles contain inherent structures in which sections and sentences have their specific functions. We suppose these structures can be used as auxiliary information for scientific summarisation. In this article, we seek to improve existing extractive QFS methods by using the macrostructure and discourse segment structure of research articles. We categorise sentences in research articles into different types according to their semantic functions and assign different weights to each type of sentence using an action-based relevance calculation method. We show that our system outperforms the baseline system on a benchmark dataset. Our findings suggest that using the inherent structure of research articles as assistance is practical for scientific summarisation.

Abstract:Abstractive summarization systems aim to produce more coherent and concise summaries than their extractive counterparts. Popular neural models have achieved impressive results for single-document summarization, yet their outputs are often incoherent and unfaithful to the input. In this paper, we introduce SENECA, a novel System for ENtity-drivEn Coherent Abstractive summarization framework that leverages entity information to generate informative and coherent abstracts. Our framework takes a two-step approach: (1) an entity-aware content selection module first identifies salient sentences from the input, then (2) an abstract generation module conducts cross-sentence information compression and abstraction to generate the final summary, which is trained with rewards to promote coherence, conciseness, and clarity. The two components are further connected using reinforcement learning. Automatic evaluation shows that our model significantly outperforms previous state-of-the-art on ROUGE and our proposed coherence measures on New York Times and CNN/Daily Mail datasets. Human judges further rate our system summaries as more informative and coherent than those by popular summarization models.

Abstract:Recently, much study has been directed toward summarizing event data, in the hope that the summary will lead us to a better understanding of the system that generates the events. However, instead of offering a global picture of the system, the summary obtained by most current approaches are piecewise, each describing an isolated snapshot of the system. We argue that the best summary, both in terms of its minimal description length and its interpretability, is the one obtained with the understanding of the internal dynamics of the system. Such understanding includes, for example, what are the internal states of the system, and how the system alternates among these states. In this paper, we adopt an algorithmic approach for event data summarization. More specifically, we use a hidden Markov model to describe the event generation process. We show that summarizing events based on the learned hidden Markov Model achieves short description length and high interpretability. Experiments show that our approach is both efficient and effective.

Abstract:This paper presents our extractive summarization systems at the update summarization track of TAC 2008. We proposed two novel methods, one is based on the information distance theory, and the other is based on the sentence centrality which derives from the centrality concept in the graph theory. The evaluation results show that the two submitted runs are very competitive to generate extractive summaries.

Abstract:The task of entity summarization (ES) is to select an optimum subset from a large set of triples describing an entity in a knowledge graph.ES systems often integrate many and various ES features in a complex way.While state-of-the-art ES systems have been evaluated and compared by recent benchmarking efforts, it was unclear whether and how much each constituent ES feature had contributed to the performance of an ES system.An interpretive evaluation of ES systems was proposed.Two novel evaluation metrics were proposed, feature effectiveness ratio and feature significance ratio, to characterize how much ground-truth summaries and machine-generated summaries exhibit each ES feature.Their comparison would help to interpret the performance of an ES system.Based on three benchmarks, metrics with six popular ES features were implemented, and an interpretive evaluation of nine unsupervised ES systems and two supervised ES systems were presented.The code and data are open source.

Abstract:The task of automatic document summarization aims at generating short summaries for originally long documents. A good summary should cover the most important information of the original document or a cluster of documents, while being coherent, non-redundant and grammatically readable. Numerous approaches for automatic summarization have been developed to date. In this paper we give a self-contained, broad overview of recent progress made for document summarization within the last 5 years. Specifically, we emphasize on significant contributions made in recent years that represent the state-of-the-art of document summarization, including progress on modern sentence extraction approaches that improve concept coverage, information diversity and content coherence, as well as attempts from summarization frameworks that integrate sentence compression, and more abstractive systems that are able to produce completely new sentences. In addition, we review progress made for document summarization in domains, genres and applications that are different from traditional settings. We also point out some of the latest trends and highlight a few possible future directions.

Abstract:Entity summarization aims at selecting a small subset of attribute-value pairs of an entity from a knowledge graph, which provides users with concrete information given an entity-related query. However, previous approaches focus on the "goodness" of the attribute-value pairs, paying little attention to user preference towards them.In this paper, we formalize the task of context-aware entity summarization, and propose an algorithm to solve this problem. We model user interest by mining the latent topics in a query log dataset. A modified Personalized PageRank algorithm is utilized to rank attribute-value pairs by leveraging three elements: relevance, informativeness and topic coherence. We evaluate our approach on real-world datasets and show that it outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches.

Abstract:The two most important tasks in entity information summarization from the Web are named entity recognition and relation extraction. Little work has been done toward an integrated statistical model for understanding both named entities and their relationships. Most of the previous works on relation extraction assume the named entities are pre-given. The drawbacks of these sequential models are that the results of relation extraction cannot be used to guide the named entity recognition, which have been proven useful. This paper proposed a novel integrate framework called EntSum, which enables bidirectional integration of named entity recognition and relation extraction using iterative optimization. Experiments on a one million large real Web data set show that EntSum achieves much better performance on both tasks than sequential methods.
