Abstract:Photoreduction of CO2 can effectively alleviate the troublesome global energy crisis and environmental problems by converting CO2 into hydrocarbons. Due to the discovery of photocatalysts that can respond to infrared light, the application of full spectrum in photocatalysis has attracted many researchers. This review comprehensively summarizes the progress in CO2 photocatalytic reduction based on full-spectrum photocatalytic systems, and the basic theory of photoresponse, the mechanism of photocatalysis and photoreduction of CO2, and the representative photocatalytic materials working under ultraviolet, visible, and infrared irradiation are discussed. The strategies and related mechanisms of realizing full-spectrum photocatalysis are introduced, and the contribution of photoreactors to CO2 photocatalytic reduction is also mentioned. Finally, the application prospects of light-driven reactions in CO2 reduction are prospected. It is hoped that this review can offer clearer guidance for CO2 reduction and construction of full spectrum-driven photocatalyst for efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction in the future.

Abstract:Photothermal CO2 hydrogenation catalyzed by earth‐abundant materials, such as non‐noble metals, has emerged as an industrially viable and sustainable way of effectively converting solar energy into chemical energy stored in fuels and other valuable chemical feedstocks. However, the performance of existing non‐noble metal photocatalysts often suffers from incomplete sunlight utilization, limited photothermal effect, and poor stability under intense light illumination. Herein, the fabrication of all‐earth‐abundant on‐silicon architectures with nearly 100% sunlight harvesting ability is demonstrated. The cobalt‐loading‐optimized architecture exhibits a high photothermal CO2 conversion rate of 0.433 mol·gCo−1·h−1. A spatial confinement strategy based on surface encapsulation with a thin layer of silica is further used to improve the stability of supported Co nanoparticles against sintering. This strategy of maximizing the sunlight absorbance of non‐noble metal photocatalysts lays a foundation for industrial implementation of all‐earth‐abundant photothermal CO2 catalysis.
Accelerating Photoelectric CO2 Conversion with a Photothermal Wavelength-Dependent Plasmonic Local Field

Abstract:The fabrication of an efficient and low-cost photocathode still remains a big challenge. We herein report a Ag/ CuxO@rGO/Mo photocathode for CO2 conversion. A unique wavelength-dependent performance is found to enhance the formation of the key intermediate groups by exciting photothermal local surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) using the lights with wavelengths ranging from 550 to 600 nm. CO, H2 and CH4 can be stably produced with dual photoelectrodes using a neutral solution. An unbiased solar-to-gaseous-carbon-fuel efficiency (SGCF) of 0.51 % has been achieved, which sets a record for carbon gas fuel production with binary photoelectrodes. In addition, the CO/H2 ratio could be tuned in the range from 0.65 to 1.84, which makes it possible to fine tune the syngas production. The excellent PEC CO2 reduction capability achieved by the new wavelengthdependent catalytic route may shine some lights for the future design and development of the next-generation PEC materials and devices.
Fundamentals and challenges of ultrathin 2D photocatalysts in boosting CO<sub>2</sub> photoreduction

Abstract:Carbon dioxide photoreduction currently suffers from low photoconversion efficiency and poor product selectivity. Ultrathin two-dimensional materials, which possess highly active sites with high density and high uniformity, can serve as ideal models to tailor three crucial parameters that determine the carbon dioxide photoconversion efficiency and product selectivity. In this review, we summarize the extended absorption spectrum range enabled by ultrathin two-dimensional semiconductors with defect levels and intermediate bands, as well as conductors with special partially occupied bands. Moreover, we overview the boosted carrier separation efficiency aroused by ultrathin two-dimensional semiconductors with defect states, surface polarization states and built-in electric fields. We also review the accelerated redox reaction kinetics induced by ultrathin two-dimensional semiconductors with in-plane heterostructures, isolated single atoms and abundant low-coordinated dual-metal sites. Finally, we end this review with an outlook on unsolved issues concerning highly selective and efficient photo-conversion of carbon dioxide into C(2+)products by ultrathin two-dimensional materials with dual or multiple active sites.

Abstract:One of the challenges in developing practical CO2 photoconversion catalysts is the design of materials with a low cost, high activity and good stability. In this paper, excellent photocatalysts based on TiO2, WO3, ZnO, Cu2O and CeO2 metal oxide materials, which are cost-effective, long-lasting, and easy to fabricate, are evaluated. The characteristics of the nanohybrid catalysts depend greatly on their architecture and design. Thus, we focus on outstanding materials that offer effective and practical solutions. Strategies to improve CO2 conversion efficiency are summarized, including heterojunction, ion doping, defects, sensitization and morphology control, which can inspire the future improvement in photochemistry. The capacity of CO2 adsorption is also pivotal, which varies with the morphological and electronic structures. Forms of 0D, 1D, 2D and 3DOM (zero/one/two-dimensional- and three-dimensional-ordered macroporous, respectively) are involved. Particularly, the several advantages of the 3DOM material make it an excellent candidate material for CO2 conversion. Hence, we explain its preparation method. Based on the discussion, new insights and prospects for designing high-efficient metallic oxide photocatalysts to reduce CO2 emissions are presented.

Abstract:The efficiency of heterogeneous photocatalysis for converting solar to chemical energy is low on a per photon basis mainly because of the difficulty of capturing and utilizing light across the entire solar spectral wavelength range. This challenge is addressed herein with a plasmonic superstructure, fashioned as an array of nanoscale needles comprising cobalt nanocrystals assembled within a sheath of porous silica grown on a fluorine tin oxide substrate. This plasmonic superstructure can strongly absorb sunlight through different mechanisms including enhanced plasmonic excitation by the hybridization of Co nanoparticles in close proximity, as well as inter‐ and intra‐band transitions. With nearly 100% sunlight harvesting ability, it drives the photothermal hydrogenation of carbon dioxide with a 20‐fold rate increase from the silica‐supported cobalt catalyst. The present work bridges the gap between strong light‐absorbing plasmonic superstructures with photothermal CO2 catalysis toward the complete utilization of the solar energy.

Abstract:This perspective gives an overview of recent developments in heterogeneous photocatalytic CO2 reduction for C1/C2 fuels production over semiconductors, which has been known for several decades as a potential feasible means to store intermittent solar energy and to recycle CO2. In recent years, significant efforts have been made in order to further improve the photoactivity and the selectivity through developing novel photocatalysts and its CO2 photoreduction reaction systems, which would be of great interest in the field of solar conversion and CO2 resource utilization.

Abstract:The conversion of carbon dioxide into useful fuels or chemical feedstocks is of great importance for achieving carbon emission peak and carbon neutrality. The harvesting and conversion of solar energy will provide a sustainable and environmentally friendly energy source for human production and living. Very recently, photothermal catalysis has been proved to exhibit great advantages in reducing the reaction temperature, promoting the catalytic activity, and manipulating the reaction pathway in comparison with traditional thermal catalysis. In this review, we firstly introduced the fundamental mechanisms and categories of photothermal catalysis to understand the synergy or the difference between photochemical and thermochemical reaction pathways. Subsequently, the criteria and strategies for photothermal catalyst design are discussed in order to inspire the development of high-efficiency photothermal catalytic route by achieving intense absorption of broadband solar energy spectrum and high conversion capability of solar-to-heat. Recent progress in CO2 reduction achieved by photothermal catalysis was summarized in terms of production types. In the end, the future challenges and perspectives of photothermal catalytic CO2 reduction are presented. We hope that this review will not only deepen the understanding of photothermal catalysis, but also inspire the design, preparation and application of high-performance photothermal catalysts, aiming at alleviating non-renewable fossil energy consumption and carbon emissions for early carbon emission peak and carbon neutrality.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 into high value-added hydrocarbon fuels and chemicals by utilizing solar energy has great potential to alleviate energy shortage and environmental issue we are currently facing. Brookite phase TiO2 has attracted extensive attention due to its non-toxicity and stable physichemical properties, but the pursuing of efficient photocatalysts which possess superior activity and selectivity in CO2 reduction reactions remains challenging. In this regard, considerable efforts have been paid on solar energy harvesting, charge separation, and the CO2 adsorption/activation/reduction upon engineered brookite TiO2. In this review, recent advances of rational design of highly-active and selective catalysts toward photocatalytic CO2 conversion has been summarized. Firstly, the commonly-used fabrication approaches of brookite TiO2 are briefly introduced. On this basis, the engineering strategies as well as the mechanisms to promote CO2 photoreduction, including crystal facets regulation, heteroatomic doping, cocatalyst loading, heterophase and heterojunction construction, are subsequently presented. Finally, challenges and perspectives concerning the enhancement of photocatalytic CO2 reduction upon brookite TiO2-based photocatalysts by tackling with poor visible light absorption, slow interfacial charge separation, and insufficient surface catalytic dynamics are demonstrated.

Abstract:Since the 21st century, with the increasing emissions of CO2-based greenhouse gases, it has been more and more urgent to seek new energy sources to build a low-carbon society. Among them, solar energy drives the conversion of CO2 into hydrocarbon fuel technology, which has great potential. This paper reviews the recent development of the field of photocatalytic reduction of CO2, including the progress of reactors and common catalysts. Through the analysis of a large number of literature and experimental data, the author highlights several key points: First, the paper describes the effects of different types of reactor structures and process parameters on the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 reactions, and reports an analysis of the influx state, temperature, light source, and fixation control of the catalyst. Second, the article focuses on the performance of different kinds of catalysts in photocatalytic CO2 reduction reactions, including semiconductor catalysts, metal catalysts, and other catalysts that have appeared in recent years. The authors studied the development process, the modification method, and the influence of different structures on the reaction process and introduced the advantages and disadvantages of various catalysts, which provide guidance for finding more efficient and sustainable applications. Finally, this paper gives an overview of the problems and challenges mentioned in this study, discusses the methods and ways to further improve the reaction efficiency and catalyst stability, and proposes directions and ideas for future research. In conclusion, this article systematically reviews the important progress in the field of photocatalytic reduction of CO2, highlighting the development status and research progress of reactors and catalysts. It has important reference significance for the research and application of related disciplines.

Abstract:The shortage of fossil fuels and the disastrous pollution of the environment have led to an increasing interest in artificial photosynthesis. The photocatalytic conversion of CO 2 into solar fuel is believed to be one of the best methods to overcome both the energy crisis and environmental problems. It is of significant importance to efficiently manage the surface reactions and the photo-generated charge carriers to maximize the activity and selectivity of semiconductor photocatalysts for photoconversion of CO 2 and H 2 O to solar fuel. To date, a variety of strategies have been developed to boost their photocatalytic activity and selectivity for CO 2 photoreduction. Based on the analysis of limited factors in improving the photocatalytic efficiency and selectivity, this review attempts to summarize these strategies and their corresponding design principles, including increased visible-light excitation, promoted charge transfer and separation, enhanced adsorption and activation of CO 2 , accelerated CO 2 reduction kinetics and suppressed undesirable reaction. Furthermore, we not only provide a summary of the recent progress in the rational design and fabrication of highly active and selective photocatalysts for the photoreduction of CO 2 , but also offer some fundamental insights into designing highly efficient photocatalysts for water splitting or pollutant degradation.

Abstract:Solar-driven carbon dioxide (CO2) conversion including photocatalytic (PC), photoelectrochemical (PEC), photovoltaic plus electrochemical (PV/EC) systems, offers a renewable and scalable way to produce fuels and high-value chemicals for environment and energy sustainability. This review summarizes the basic fundament and the recent advances in the field of solar-driven CO2 conversion. Expanding the visible-light absorption is an important strategy to improve solar energy conversion efficiency. The separation and migration of photogenerated charges carriers to surface sites and the surface catalytic processes also determine the photocatalytic performance. Surface engineering including co-catalyst loading, defect engineering, morphology control, surface modification, surface phase junction, and Z-scheme photocatalytic system construction, have become fundamental strategies to obtain high-efficiency photocatalysts. Similar to photocatalysis, these strategies have been applied to improve the conversion efficiency and Faradaic efficiency of typical PEC systems. In PV/EC systems, the electrode surface structure and morphology, electrolyte effects, and mass transport conditions affect the activity and selectivity of electrochemical CO2 reduction. Finally, the challenges and prospects are addressed for the development of solar-driven CO2 conversion system with high energy conversion efficiency, high product selectivity and stability.

Abstract:As a promising approach to achieving two objectives with one strategy, photocatalytic CO2 conversion for C1/C2 "solar fuels" production can provide a package solution to the current global warming and growing energy demand by using inexhaustible solar energy and increasing atmospheric CO2. Although numerous efforts have been made to enhance the CO2 conversion efficiency through developing photocatalysts and CO2 reduction systems in recent years, some challenges still remain in improving the activity and selectivity of the CO2 photoreduction reactions. This review gives an overview of fundamental aspects and recent research advances of heterogeneous photocatalytic CO2 conversion systems in the last 3 years, and the catalysts are categorized as one-step excitation semiconductor systems, one-step excitation photosensitized semiconductor systems, and two-step excitation hybrid systems such as semiconductor heterojunction and Z-scheme systems. Also, some suggestions are given for further confirming that the carbon-containing "solar fuels" are derived from CO2 rather than from the possible carbonaceous impurities in the photocatalytic system, because most of the papers cited in this review have not demonstrated that CO2 is the actual carbon source for photoreduction through (CO2)-C-13 labeling or other techniques. Lastly, a short perspective on the challenges and new directions in this field is proposed, which would be of great interest for the further improvements of activity and selectivity of the CO2 reduction reactions.
A Bismuth Rich Hollow Bi4O5Br2 Photocatalyst Enables Dramatic CO2 Reduction Activity

Abstract:The insufficient separation of photogenerated charge carriers and faint CO2 capture remains the major obstacles for photocatalytic conversion of CO2 into solar fuel. Rational design of semiconductor photocatalysts with unique structures may be promising to break this bottleneck. Herein, bismuth rich Bi4O5Br2 hollow microspheres are designed as a robust photocatalyst for efficient CO2 reduction. Thanks to the bismuth rich strategy, the highly dispersed band structure and the elevated conduction band (CB) potential facilitate the charge transfer and photoreduction ability. Meanwhile, hollow structure provides the large specific area and creates a resonance in its interior to enhance the CO2 adsorption and activation. Benefiting from the collaborative promotion effect, the local charge arrangement and electronic structure are tuned so as to an exceptional efficiency of photocatalytic CO2 conversion into CO (3.16 mu mol g(-1) h(-1)) and CH4 (0.5 mu mol g(-1)h(-1)) is attained over hollow Bi4O5Br2, which is superior to that of solid Bi4O5Br2 and BiOBr, as well as other reported Bi-based photocatalysts. This work paves new opportunities for exploring high-efficiency CO2 photoreduction catalysts.

Abstract:Artificial photosynthesis has become one of the most attractive strategies for lowering atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) level and achieving the carbon balance; whereas, the fast electron–hole recombination and sluggish charge transfer in photocatalysts are themain stumbling blocks to the applications. Constructing semiconductor nano-heterostructures provides a promising strategy to accelerate the separation and transfer of photoinduced charge carriers for promoting the multielectron CO2 reduction reaction. Herein, a CdS/g-C3N4/α-Fe2O3 three-component photocatalyst consisting of type II and Z-scheme tandem heterojunctions is skillfully fabricated via the solvothermal synthesis followed with photoinduced deposition. The CdS/g-C3N4/α-Fe2O3 tandem-heterojunction photocatalyst exhibits superior performance toward the conversion of CO2 to fuels (CO and CH4), compared with the single- and binary-component systems, owing to the favorable energy-level alignment, accelerated charge separation, facilitated water dissociation and sufficient reactive-hydrogen provision. The total consumed electron number of CdS/g-C3N4/α-Fe2O3 catalyst for CO2 reduction is about 10.5 times that of pure g-C3N4. The photocatalytic mechanism is elucidated according to detailed characterizations and in-situ spectroscopy analyses. This work sheds light on the rational construction of heterojunction photocatalysts to promote the conversion of CO2 to solar fuels, without using any sacrifice reagent or noble-metal cocatalysts.

Abstract:Photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide into sustainable green solar fuel is a promising solution to both environmental problems and energy crises.Despite extensive research to date,there are still many obstacles to achieving efficient,selective and stable CO 2 reduction.Furthermore,the use of water as an electron donor rather than a sacrificial reagent in order to achieve ΔG＞0 of the reaction is essential for ideal artificial ’photosynthesis’,but it also presents many challenges for photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 systems.In this review,we first briefly introduce the mechanism and challenges of photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 ,and then we summarize the corresponding strategies and the latest research progress according to the current problems of photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 without sacrificial reagent,such as the adjustment of band structure,the loading of cocatalysts,the construction of heterojunctions,the design of MOFs and COFs materials,etc.At last,the unsolved problems and the obstacles to industrial application in the future are summarized.

Abstract:Increasing emissions of carbon dioxide and the depletion of finite fossil fuels have led to many concerns about global warming and energy crises. Consequently, a sustainable and alternative method, photocatalytic CO2 reduction to chemical fuels has received considerable attention. This perspective highlights recent knowledge and the main challenges in CO2 photoreduction primarily from the theoretical field. The fundamental understanding of CO2 adsorption and reaction mechanism at an atomic level is fully addressed, and the relevant effects dominating the process of CO2 photoreduction are also elucidated. Moreover, recent development of photocatalysts including structural modification is presented, which greatly affects the efficiency and selectivity of CO2 conversion. Finally, the possibilities and challenges in this field are discussed.

Abstract:: Since the beginning of the 21st century, energy shortage and environmental pollution have been the major challenges faced by human beings. Photocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) reduction is one of the promising strategies to solve the energy crisis and promote the carbon cycle, in which semiconductor captures solar energy to obtain hydrocarbon fuel. However, the low activity and poor selectivity of the products greatly limit the practical application of this technology. Thus, it is of great significance to regulate product selectivity, improve photocatalytic efficiency, and deeply understand the mechanism of CO 2 reduction reaction. In recent years, ultrathin materials have attracted extensive attention from researchers due to their high specific surface area, abundant unsaturated coordination surface atoms, shortened charge migration path from inside to surface, and tailorable energy band structure, and have achieved promising results in the field of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. In this paper, the reaction mechanism of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction is firstly summarized. Next, the research results of promoting electron hole separation and regulating charge transport path of ultrathin nanostructures by constructing heterostructures, designing Z-scheme systems, introducing cocatalysts, and defect engineering are introduced. Finally, the prospect and challenge of improving the efficiency of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction and optimizing the product selectivity are pointed out.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction towards various fuels is of significant interest under the background of mitigating the global warming induced by CO 2 emission and lowering the depletion of fossil fuels. However, state-of-the-art photocatalysts still suffer from sluggish reaction dynamics and frustrated product selectivity, especially for C 2+ generations, which are of great interest for industrial applications. Over the past decades, comprehensive research on solar-driven CO 2 reduction has consistently unveiled some encouraging results in meaningful pathways and architectural design of active sites over photocatalysts. This review highlights the recent advances in boosting photocatalytic CO 2 reduction of atomically dispersed catalysts via engineered active sites, including two separated active sites, paired dual-active sites, and nanoclusters based on the configuration of active sites. Both the mechanism of CO 2 activation over active sites and advanced characterization methods are discussed in detail. Particularly, in consideration of the wide gap between fundamental research and practical applications, the integrations of experimental and theoretical results are analyzed to realize the underlying structure-activity relationships as well as promising selectivity toward target products. Finally, the remaining challenges in the field are outlined, and inquisitive perspectives with a focus on the rational design of active sites and mechanistic investigation are proposed.
