Abstract:We investigate the quantum phase transition of an atomic ensemble trapped in a single-mode optical cavity via the geometric phase and quantum Fisher information of an extra probe atom which is injected into the optical cavity and interacts with the cavity field. We also find that the geometric quantum correlation between two probe atoms exhibits a double sudden transition phenomenon and show this double sudden transition phenomenon is closely associated with the quantum phase transition of the atomic ensemble. Furthermore, we propose a theoretical scheme to prolong the frozen time during which the geometric quantum correlation remains constant by applying time-dependent electromagnetic field.

Abstract:The dipole-coupled two-level atoms (qubits) in a single-mode resonant cavity are studied by extended bosonic coherent states. The numerical solution is presented. The first-order quantum phase transitions may occur in finite systems, in contrast to the original Dicke model. This system also exhibits a second-order quantum phase transition from the normal to the superradiant phase, as in the original Dicke model. Finite-size scaling for several observables-such as average fidelity susceptibility, order parameter, and concurrence-is performed for different interatomic interactions. The scaling exponents obtained suggest that interatomic interactions do not change the universality class.

Abstract:We investigate the quantum phase transition and geometric phase of a model that describes a two-level atomic Bose-Einstein condensate coupled to a high-finesse optical cavity with considering the interactions between the coherent atoms. Using the Holstein-Primakoff transformation and the boson expansion approach, we identify a threshold coupling line separating the normal phase and the superradiant phase. We find that this phase transition is characterized by the nonanalyticity of the second-order derivative of the ground-state energy and the divergency of the first-order derivative of the geometric phase. In particular, we show that the atom-atom interactions can strongly affect the phase transition point and slightly modify the scaling behavior of the geometric phase in the vicinity of the critical point. The repulsive interaction can reduce the threshold and thus is favorable for observing the phase transition.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to implement two-bit quantum phase gates and one-bit unitary gates by using the two-mode two-photon Jaynes-Cummings model. The entanglement between the atom and cavity is also investigated in the presence of phase decoherence. It is found that there is stationary entanglement that is sensitive with the detuning.

Abstract:A new extended Dicke model, which includes atom-atom interactions and a driving classical laser field, is established for a Bose-Einstein condensate inside an ultrahigh-finesse optical cavity. A feasible experimental setup with a strong atom-field coupling is proposed, where most parameters are easily controllable and thus the predicted second-order superradiant-normal phase transition may be detected by measuring the ground-state atomic population. More intriguingly, a novel second-order phase transition from the superradiant phase to the \textquotedblleft Mott" phase is also revealed. In addition, a rich and exotic phase diagram is presented.

Abstract:When an atomic ensemble is coupled with a cavity field governed by the well-known Dicke model , an important quantum phase transition (QPT) from the normal phase to the superradiant phase occurs, which was predicted more than 30 years ago. In this paper, both the atom-photon nonlinear interaction and the driving field are added to the Dicke's Hamiltonian. With the method of Holstein-Primafoff transformation, the ground state energy is given by the theoretical calculation, and the rich phase figures are presented. Meanwhile, these properties are observed experimentally. We mainly dicuss the effects of the atom-photon nonlinear interaction and the driving field on QPT.

Abstract:The quantum phase transition in an atom-molecule conversion system with atomic transition between two hyperfine states is studied. In the mean-field approximation, we give the phase diagram in which the phase boundary only depends on the atomic transition strength and the atom-molecule energy detuning, but not on the atomic interactions. Such a phase boundary is further confirmed by calculating the fidelity of the ground state and the energy gap between the first excited state and the ground state. As a comparison to the mean-field results, we also study the quantum phase transition with the full quantum method where the phase boundary depends on the particle number. Analysing the finite-size scaling behaviours of the energy gap, the fidelity susceptibility and the first-order derivative of entanglement entropy with respect to the atomic transition strength, we obtain their critical exponents by numerical calculation and show that in the thermodynamic limit, one can obtain the same phase boundary as in the mean-field approximation. Our results show a new way to manipulate the quantum phase transition by regulating the atomic transition strength with the intensity of the laser.

Abstract:We investigate the two-dimensional weakly interacting rotating Bose-Einstein condensate by the tools of quantum information theory. The critical exponents of the ground-state fidelity susceptibility and the correlation length of the system are obtained for the sudden change of the ground state when the first vortex is formed. This sudden change can also be indicated by the ground state entanglement. We also find the single-particle entanglement can be an indicator of the angular momentums for some real ground states. The single-particle entanglement of fractional quantum Hall states such as Laughlin state and Pfaffian state is also studied.

Abstract:We investigate the geometric phase in a model of a Bose-Einstein condensate coupled to an optical cavity in which both the condensate and the cavity are described with coherent states. When the argument of the atom-cavity coupling term varies in time slowly from zero to 2 pi, we calculate the geometric phase accumulated by the ground state and obtain its analytic expression in explicit form. We find that the adiabatic geometric phase jumps from zero to nontrivial pi at a critical value that corresponds to the normal-superradiant phase-transition point. The magneticlike flux interpretation of the geometric phase is also discussed.

Abstract:We investigate the geometric phase of a two-level atom (qubit) coupled to a bosonic reservoir with Lorentzian spectral density and find that for the non-Markovian dynamics in which the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) is performed, the geometric phase has a pi-phase jump at the nodal point. However, the exact result without the RWA given by the hierarchical equations of motion method shows that there is no such phase jump or nodal structure in the geometric phase. Thus our results demonstrate that the counterrotating terms significantly contribute to the geometric phase in the multimode Hamiltonian under certain circumstances.

Abstract:The superfluid to Mott insulator transition and the superradiant transition are textbook examples of quantum phase transition and coherent quantum optics, respectively. Recent experiments in ETH and Hamburg have succeeded in loading degenerate bosonic atomic gases in optical lattices inside a cavity, which enables the first experimental study of the interplay between these two transitions. In this Rapid Communication we present the theoretical phase diagram for the ETH Zurich experimental setup, and determine the phase boundaries and the orders of the phase transitions between the normal superfluid phase, the superfluid with superradiant light, the normal Mott insulator, and the Mott insulator with superradiant light. We find that in contrast to the second-order superradiant transition in a weakly interacting Bose condensate, strong correlations in the superfluid nearby a Mott transition can render the superradiant transition to a first-order one. Our results will stimulate further experimental studies of interactions between cavity light and strongly interacting quantum matter.

Abstract:We study the dynamical properties in a non-Hermitian Bose-Hubbard dimer and show that the steady state consists mostly of the eigenstate whose eigenvalue has the largest imaginary part. A sharp phase transition occurs in the steady state and the phase transition occurs for a finite particle number, not for infinite ones, in contrast to the Hermitian system. We also investigate the quantum Fisher information and entanglement in two different phases. The results show that the steady state in the Josephson oscillation regime is fully N-particle entangled and the corresponding parameter sensitivity approaches the Heisenberg limit. In the self-trapping regime, the parameter sensitivity just scales as the shot-noise limit. Moreover, quantum Fisher information of the steady state is robust to the initial state, which indicates that the non-Hermitian dynamics takes more advantage than the Hermitian one for quantum metrology.

Abstract:We investigated the optomechanical dynamics and explored the quantum phase of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a ring cavity. The interaction between the atoms and the cavity field in the running wave mode induces a semiquantized spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for the atoms. We found that the evolution of the magnetic excitations of the matter field resembles that of an optomechanical oscillator moving in a viscous optical medium, with very good integrability and traceability, regardless of the atomic interaction. Moreover, the light-atom coupling induces a sign-changeable long-range interatomic interaction, which reshapes the typical energy spectrum of the system in a drastic manner. As a result, a new quantum phase featuring a high quantum degeneracy was found in the transitional area for SOC. Our scheme is immediately realizable and the results are measurable in experiments.

Abstract:We present a scheme for implementing the unconventional geometric two-qubit phase gate with nonzero dynamical phase by using the two-channel Raman interaction of two atoms in a cavity. We show that the dynamical phase acquired in a cyclic evolution is proportional to the geometric phase acquired in the same cyclic evolution, hence the the total phase possesses the same geometric features as the geometric phase. In our scheme the atomic excited state is adiabatically eliminated and the operation of the proposed logic gate involves only in the metastable states of the atom and hence is not affected by spontaneous emission.

The Dicke Quantum Phase Transition with a Superfluid Gas in an Optical Cavity

Abstract:A phase transition describes the sudden change of state in a physical system, such as the transition between a fluid and a solid. Quantum gases provide the opportunity to establish a direct link between experiment and generic models which capture the underlying physics. A fundamental concept to describe the collective matter-light interaction is the Dicke model which has been predicted to show an intriguing quantum phase transition. Here we realize the Dicke quantum phase transition in an open system formed by a Bose-Einstein condensate coupled to an optical cavity, and observe the emergence of a self-organized supersolid phase. The phase transition is driven by infinitely long-ranged interactions between the condensed atoms. These are induced by two-photon processes involving the cavity mode and a pump field. We show that the phase transition is described by the Dicke Hamiltonian, including counter-rotating coupling terms, and that the supersolid phase is associated with a spontaneously broken spatial symmetry. The boundary of the phase transition is mapped out in quantitative agreement with the Dicke model. The work opens the field of quantum gases with long-ranged interactions, and provides access to novel quantum phases.

Dissipation-induced Geometric Phase for an Atom in Cavity QED

Abstract:We present a feasible scheme to investigate the geometric phase for an atom trapped in an optical cavity induced by the effective decay process due to cavity photon loss. The cavity mode, together with the external driving fields, acts as the engineered environment of the atom. When the parameters of the reservoir is adiabatically and cyclically changed, the system initially in the nontrivial dark state of the effective Lindblad operator undergoes a cyclic evolution and acquires a geometric phase. The geometric phase can be observed with the atomic Ramsey interference oscillation in the decoherence-free subspace.

Abstract:By using the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory, we have studied the dynamical and the geometric phases in the interaction system of multi-atom in micro-cavity with single-mode photon field. We find that the geometric phases in a cycle case have nothing to do with the frequency of the photon field, the coupling coefficient between photons and atoms, and the atom transition frequency.

Abstract:The quantum phase transition from the Mott insulator to the superfluid phases of the bosonic atoms trapped in an optical lattice, in which the on-site interaction can be tuned by a Feshbach resonance, is investigated by a variational approach within mean-field theory. We derive an extended Bose-Hubbard model to describe this ultracold atomic system. By theoretical calculation and analysis, the phase diagram is shown clearly, and we find an exciting and novel phenomenon that is the appearance of the Mott insulator-sea (MI-sea). Meanwhile, the experimental feasibility of observing the MI-sea is discussed by analyzing the published data related to the Fashbach resonance at present. Finally, the potential application of the MI-sea for quantum information processing and quantum computation is also discussed in detail.
