Abstract:Coordination among supply chains has elicited considerable attention in both academia and industry. This paper investigates an integrated supply chain network design problem that involves the determination of the locations for distribution centers and the assignment of customers and suppliers to the corresponding distribution centers. The problem simultaneously involves the distribution of products from the manufacturer to the customers and the collection of components from the suppliers to the manufacturer via cross-docking at distribution centers. The co-location of different types of distribution centers and coordinated transportation are introduced to achieve cost savings. A Lagrangian relaxation-based algorithm is then developed. Extensive computational experiments show that the proposed algorithm has stable performance and outperforms CPLEX for large-scale problems. An industrial case study is considered and sensitivity analysis is conducted to explore managerial insights. Finally, conclusions are drawn, and future research directions are outlined.
Modeling Incentive Strategies for Landside Integration in Multimodal Transport Chains

Abstract:A significant bottleneck in port regionalization through multimodal transport chains is expensive and time-consuming inland transport. To be competitive, it is crucial for a port authority to build an effective transport system and develop collection-distribution abilities. Considering shipper preferences, this study proposes a pricing model to describe the markets of competing seaports and discusses several incentive strategies that may or may not bring mutual benefits for shippers and port authorities in the multimodal transport chain, such as the corridor investment strategy, subsidy strategy, and combinational strategy. Based on two adjacent ports in China, a comparative analysis is carried out for evaluating the effects of different strategies. The results show that the corridor investment strategy depends on unit investment capital for improving transport convenience. It is necessary to adopt a differentiated subsidy strategy based on transport distance when considering the subsidy strategy; however, there is a constraint on the subsidy level. In the combinational strategy, shippers' preferences for transport convenience and low inland transport cost have a significant impact on a port authority's total revenue.

Abstract:This paper addresses the optimal design of a hybrid assembly-recycling network that simultaneously integrates the forward and reverse logistics among its multi-product multi-echelon superstructure. Multiple sources of raw materials including components and parts are considered at different stages of the forward assembly process. The problem investigates three recycling options for final products, semi-products and modules. Various types of uncertainties on return flow and waste flow are investigated. To optimize the dual-system superstructure, the problem is hereby modeled by a fuzzy mixed integer linear programming approach. Piecewise linear membership functions are constructed for the objectives to represent the diversified satisfactory degrees which preferably comply with the real-world decision scenarios. Further, an interactive fuzzy optimization approach is developed to solve the problem by differentiating the piece-wise sections of satisfactory degrees. Finally, an electronic assembly plant with its own recycling process is chosen as the industrial case to implement the proposed approach. Sensitivity analysis and comparison under different scenarios are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness on obtaining compromised solutions under diversified satisfactory degrees in such an uncertain environment.

Abstract:Although a large amount of intelligent handling equipment has been widely used in automated container terminals, few studies have explored the coordination optimization among them, which is critical to the overall operational efficiency of terminals. This paper investigates the integrated scheduling of intelligent handling equipment at automated container terminals, with challenging characteristics such as bidirectional flows and limited buffers. Besides, other characteristics such as blocking, machine eligibility, and separable sequence-dependent setup times also complicate the problem, making it difficult to find an optimal or near-optimal solution. This study formulates the problem as the blocking hybrid flow shop scheduling problem with bidirectional flows and limited buffers, and then develops a compact mixed-integer linear programming model that can obtain the optimal scheme on small-scale cases. To increase the size of solvable problems and improve the performance of the solution, an adaptive large neighborhood search is presented, which takes a high-quality coding scheme that specifies the equipment used by each job in various stages. Experiments have been conducted and computational results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm in terms of solution quality and convergence speed.

Abstract:An integrated optimization model for automobile logistics network design is presented,which provides an integrated view of transportation,inventory and facility costs as well as service quality. In order to find a minimum-cost flow patterns on a network composed of plants, consolidation centers and distribution centers with concave transportation costs,a flow prediction algorithm is presented.This algorithm is embedded in genetic algorithm to solve the difficultly of transportation cost between plants and distribution centers in the fitness value.Solution frame of the genetic algorithm based on the flow prediction is illustrated.A case study shows the effectivenees of the proposed algorithm.The nange of possible solution varying with critical model parameters is analyzed.

Abstract:With the trend of globalization and increasing transportation volume, integrated automated shipment handling systems have appeared in major cargo terminals. In such terminals, a critical decision is the route selection linking various origins (such as system gate points) and destinations (such as storage racks). We study such a routing optimization problem and propose a flow rationing routing strategy, which reserves various sets of paths for corresponding cargos and only admits the cargos with less importance on more important paths only when their saturability is low. A Markov Decision Processes model is developed to make the decision on the admission policy. Extensive numerical experiment is conducted to prove the effectiveness of the routing strategy our proposed.

Abstract:This paper considers an integrated service network design problem for a given set of freight demands that is concerned with integration of locating cross-docking (CD) centers and allocating vehicles for the associated direct (transportation) services from origin node to a CD center or from a CD center to the destination node. For the vehicle allocation, direct services (sub-routes) should be determined for the given freight demands, and then the vehicle allocation has to be made in consideration of routing for the associated direct service fulfillment subject to vehicle capacity and service time restriction. The problem is modeled as a path-based formulation for which a tabu-search-based solution algorithm is proposed. To guarantee the performance of the proposed solution algorithm, strong valid inequalities are derived based on the polyhedral characteristics of the problem domain and an efficient separation heuristic is derived for identifying any violated valid inequalities. Computational experiments are performed to test the performance of the proposed solution algorithm and also that of a valid-inequality separation algorithm, which finds that the solution algorithm works quite well and the separation algorithm provides strengthened lower bounds. Its immediate application may be made to strategic (integrated) service network designs and to tactical service network planning for the CD network.

Abstract:The financial risk management in the design of multi-product, multi-echelon supply chain networks in petrochemical industry was discussed. The problem consists of determining the number, location, and capacity of warehouses and distribution centers to be set as well as the transportation links to be established and the flows and production rates in the network. A model dealing with uncertainty and financial risk management constraints was proposed. The model was established in the framework of deterministic two-stage stochastic programming. Based on a supply chain networks design for a petrochemical company, the financial risk was analyzed, and the ability to manage the risk was discussed. © All Rights Reserved.

Abstract:A key issue in supply chain design for manufacturing firms is how to make a trade-off between the degrees of vertical integration.This paper studies this issue by a single period supply chain model with one supplier and one manufacturer.For the manufacturer,all the components needed for building the final product are divided into two classes:core and non-core.For the non-core components,the manufacture can either in- vest in building its own production capacities so as to promote the ratio of backward integration,or rely on out- sourcing to an upstream supplier.The manufacture's optimal strategies on integration and outsourcing are first investigated,and then the impacts of such strategies on the performance of the manufacturer,the supplier and the whole supply chain system are analyzed.Finally several ways to improve and coordinate the supply chain are discussed.

Abstract:Reverse logistics-that is, the distribution activities involved in product returns-is receiving growing attention. Because of the difference and interaction between the forward and reverse distributions, how to integrate the forward and reverse channels has become an emerging issue. Few studies have attempted to integrate the forward and reverse distributions. Furthermore, the increasing opportunities for cost savings and customer satisfaction in such integrated distribution have prompted third-party logistics providers (3PLs) to get involved in forward and reverse logistics operations. This paper first develops a multiobjective model considering activities of the 3PLs for forward and reverse distributions simultaneously. Two objectives are included in the proposed model: (a) maximization of the returned products shipped from customers back to the collection facilities and (b) minimization of the total costs associated with the forward and reverse logistics operations. A fuzzy goal programming approach is applied to determine the compromise solution for the multiobjective model. A genetic algorithm with two subalgorithms is then developed to solve the problem. Numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the applicability of the formulated model and the proposed solution method.

Abstract:This paper presents a fuzzy programming method to design supply chain network, in which the customer demands and transportation costs are assumed to be fuzzy parameters. Existing researches on supply chain network design problem are either restricted on deterministic environment or only address stochastic parameters. In this paper, we consider this problem in fuzzy environment. Under different criteria, we format three types of models for the decision makers: expected cost optimization model, chance-constrained model and chance maximization model. A genetic algorithm based on fuzzy simulation is developed to solve the proposed fuzzy models. Moreover, some numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of models and solution algorithm.

Abstract:Coordination is essential for improving supply chain performance, and one of the most critical factors in achieving the coordination of a supply chain is the integrated research of production and distribution. In this paper, a novel two-stage hybrid solution methodology is proposed. In the first stage, products are processed on the serial machines of multiple manufacturers located in two industrial parks. A fuzzy multi-objective scheduling optimization is performed using a modified non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II). The result obtained in the first stage is used in the second stage to optimize the distribution scheduling problem using a modified genetic annealing algorithm (GAA). Finally, simulation results verify both the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed solution methodology.

Abstract:Supply chains with returned products are receiving increasing attention in the operations management community. The present paper studies a capacitated facility location model with bidirectional flows and a marginal value of time for returned products. The distribution system consists of a single supplier that provides one new product to a set of distribution centers (DCs), which then ships to the final retailers. While at the retailers' site, products can be shipped back to the supplier for reprocessing. Each DC is capacitated and handles stocks of new and/or returned products. The model is a nonlinear mixed-integer program that optimizes DC location and allocation between retailers and DCs. We show that it can be converted to a conic quadratic program that can be efficiently solved. Some valid inequalities are added to the program to improve computational efficiency. We conclude by reporting numerical experiments that reveal some interesting properties of the model.
Integrated approach to modeling emergent structures in supply chains

Abstract:The entire structure modeling in supply chains is mainly discussed. Based on the analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of system dynamics and agent based modeling, aiming at the demand of the availability and applicability of supply chain modeling, the above two methods are combined together and an integrated approach for modeling supply chain is presented. And then a simple supply chain prototype and its agents' internal structures by using the proposed approach are implemented and the effects of order fulfillment strategies and attractiveness decay time on the structure of the supply chain are subsequently analyzed. At last, the integrated method is used to study the distribution capacity planning. The results reveal that the integrated method is rather effective to deal with the emergent structures and behaviors in supply chains, which markedly reduce the a-priori complexity of the supply chain model.

Abstract:<p>In this paper, we study the competitive and sustainable supply chain network design problem. We consider the chain-to-chain competition between two supply chains. The problem is divided into two stages. The retail price and carbon emission equilibrium at the competition stage are studied. Then, the equilibrium results of the competition stage are substituted into the network design stage as constraints. To address the computational complexity of large-scale problems, a Benders decomposition algorithm is proposed. Through computational studies we find that (1) considering carbon emission competition in the supply chain lowers both the total optimized cost and carbon emission; (2) the carbon emissions of the total supply chain network increases with the probability of capacity satisfaction; (3) the proposed Benders decomposition algorithm outperforms CPLEX for large scale problems.</p>

Abstract:The paper analyzes the coordination and efficiency of a two-tiers assembly supply and demand system,in which the reverse logistics exist as a result of the sharing of the salvage value of the left-over inventories.In the presence of the reverse logistics and asymmetric information,our research indicates that the traditional revenue-sharing contract cannot effectively coordinate the supply chain.Furthermore,under the sharing contract for the system with competition and signaling,our analysis through establishing the newsvendor model separately for every party of the supply chain implies that the effective coordination can only be achieved through introducing the signaling mechanism and suppliers' competition of the same kind of products simultaneously,plus the incentive for a long-term relationship.Our conclusion is justified through a computational study,and is consistent with the original meaning of supply and demand network.

Abstract:In this paper, we devoted a design of a four-echelon supply chain network including multiple suppliers, multiple plants, multiple distributors and multiple customers. The proposed model is a multi-objective mixed integer linear programming which takes into account several constraints and aims to minimize the total costs including the procurement, production, storage and distribution costs as well as maximize on-time deliveries. Interactive fuzzy goal programming (IFGP) based three different aggregation functions with respect of the structure of supply chain mainly centralized and decentralized is applied to handling multiple objectives and to address the imprecise nature of decision-makers’ aspiration levels for goals. Finally, numerical results are reported for real case study to demonstrate the efficiency and applicability of the proposed model.

Abstract:The coordination of different container-handling equipment is an important method for improving the overall efficiency of automated container terminals. In the real terminal, we should consider many real-life issues, such as the equipment capacity, the equipment collision, changing lanes in the multi-lane road, and choosing one of container-handling lanes for each container. This paper proposes the integrated scheduling problem of three container-handling equipment with the capacity constraint and the dual-cycle strategy, for simultaneously solving the equipment scheduling problem, the assignment problem of the container-handling lane and the conflict-free route planning problem of automated guided vehicles (AGVs). With the objective of minimizing the ship's berth time, we propose a mixed-integer programming model based on the space-time network representation method and two bilevel optimization algorithms based on conflict resolution rules. Finally, numerical experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed model and two bilevel optimization algorithms.

Abstract:Recently, the multi-level and multi-facility industrial problem in supply chain management (SCM) has been widely investigated. One of the key issues, central to this problem in the current SCM research area is the interdependence among the location of facilities, the allocation of facilities, and the vehicle routing for the supply of raw materials and products. This paper studies the supply chain network design problem, which involves the location of facilities, allocation of facilities, and routing decisions. The proposed problem has some practical applications. For example, it is necessary for third party logistics (3PL) companies to manage the design of the network and to operate vehicle transportation. The purpose of this study is to determine the optimal location, allocation, and routing with minimum cost to the supply chain network. The study proposes two mixed integer programming models, one without routing and one with routing, and a heuristic algorithm based on LP-relaxation in order to solve the model with routing. The results show that a developed heuristic algorithm is able to find a good solution in a reasonable time.
