Abstract:There are close relationships between three popular approaches to image thresholding, namely Ridler and Calvard's iterative-selection (IS) method, Kittler and Illingworth's minimum-error-thresholding (MET) method and Otsu's method. The relationships can be briefly described as: the IS method is an iterative version of Otsu's method; Otsu's method can be regarded as a special case of the MET method. The purpose of this correspondence is to provide a comprehensive clarification, some practical implications and further discussions of these relationships.

Abstract:The centroid method is a common procedure for sub-pixel location used in many optical measurement devices and the centroid is very often calculated over thresholded data. In practice, the thresholding algorithms are used to eliminate undesirable background and random noise that may decrease precision. Aiming at the deficiency of the existing thresholding methods, we described a new weighted threshold algorithm based on the estimation of optimal threshold for achieving minimal centroid error in the processed image. Theoretical and experimental analyses were performed to investigate the relationship between weight coefficient and obtained threshold. Besides, the impact of threshold on centroid accuracy and computing time is also presented in detail. This work provides a fundamental concept for selecting threshold correctly before centroid computation.
A New Iterative Triclass Thresholding Technique in Image Segmentation

Abstract:We present a new method in image segmentation that is based on Otsu's method but iteratively searches for subregions of the image for segmentation, instead of treating the full image as a whole region for processing. The iterative method starts with Otsu's threshold and computes the mean values of the two classes as separated by the threshold. Based on the Otsu's threshold and the two mean values, the method separates the image into three classes instead of two as the standard Otsu's method does. The first two classes are determined as the foreground and background and they will not be processed further. The third class is denoted as a to-be-determined (TBD) region that is processed at next iteration. At the succeeding iteration, Otsu's method is applied on the TBD region to calculate a new threshold and two class means and the TBD region is again separated into three classes, namely, foreground, background, and a new TBD region, which by definition is smaller than the previous TBD regions. Then, the new TBD region is processed in the similar manner. The process stops when the Otsu's thresholds calculated between two iterations is less than a preset threshold. Then, all the intermediate foreground and background regions are, respectively, combined to create the final segmentation result. Tests on synthetic and real images showed that the new iterative method can achieve better performance than the standard Otsu's method in many challenging cases, such as identifying weak objects and revealing fine structures of complex objects while the added computational cost is minimal.
Threshold Selection Using Cross-Entropy and Fuzzy Divergence

Abstract:Image segmentation consists of dividing an image into non-intersecting and dissimilar but meaningful regions (objects and background). Thresholding is a commonly employed technique for segmenting image. Many methods for automatic selection of thresholds use optimization process in which some specific criterion functions are defined. Recently, several thresholding methods based on minimizing the cross-entropy function of images have been proposed. Cross-entropy measures the information discrepancy between two probability distributions. Derived from cross-entropy, fuzzy divergence measures the dissimilarity between two fuzzy sets. In this paper, we present four new algorithms for optimal threshold selection based on different criteria integrating cross entropy and fuzzy divergence. The first one is a minimum cross entropy algorithm based on the hypothesis of uniform probability distribution. The second one is a maximum between-class cross entropy algorithm using a posterior probability. The third one is a modified version of existing method based on maximum between-class fuzzy divergence. The last one is a minimum fuzzy divergence algorithm. According to the requirement of image thresholding, we construct a new fuzzy membership function to take into account the gray level probability distribution of object pixels and background pixels about their mean values for the last two algorithms. The effectiveness and generality of these proposed algorithms have been compared with some rece4nt techniques based on related principles, and evaluated by using uniformity measure and shape measure with real images. Results showing the superiority of the proposed algorithms are presented.

Abstract:Multilevel thresholding is a significant technology for image segmentation. Traditional exhaustive search method to solve the optimal multilevel thresholds is time consuming, color images contain more information are even worse. To address this issue, an improved cuckoo search algorithm (ICS) is proposed for color image segmentation in this paper, and a modified fuzzy entropy is used as its objective function. In ICS, two modifications are adopted to improve the standard cuckoo search algorithm. First, an adaptive control parameter mechanism is utilized to enhance the performance of exploration. Second, a hybrid search strategy is used to boost the local search efficiency. To fully demonstrate the superior performance of the ICS, the experiments are conducted on a series of color benchmark test images, and a total of six optimization algorithms are compared with the proposed algorithm. The experimental results show that the presented ICS algorithm outperforms all the other algorithms in term of objective function value, PSNR, FSIM, convergence speed and parametric statistical test. Compared to other algorithms, the ICS algorithm is an effective method for multilevel color image thresholding segmentation.

Abstract:In this paper, we presented a new parameter-free thresholding method for image segmentation. In separating an image into two classes, the method employs an objective function that not only maximizes the between-class variance but also the distance between the mean of each class and the global mean of the image. The design of the objective function aims to circumvent the challenge that many existing techniques encounter when the underlying two classes have very different sizes or variances. The advantages of the new method are twofold. First, it is parameter-free, meaning that it can generate consistent results. Second, the new method has a simple form that makes it easy to adapt to different applications. We tested and compared the new method with the standard Otsu method, the maximum entropy method, and the 2D Otsu method on the simulated and real biomedical and photographic images and found that the new method can achieve a more accurate and robust performance.

Abstract:The goal of color image segmentation is to divide the image into homogeneous regions. Thresholding is a commonly used technique for image segmentation. Thresholding assumes that image present a number of components, each of a nearly homogeneous value, and that one can separate the components by a proper choice of intensity threshold. In this paper, we present an efficient iterative algorithm for finding optimal thresholds. In the first step, color images were captured, and the edge of color images were detected by edge detection method. In the second step, color images were converted into a gradient map, and then the regular of experience values were analyzed, at last the best threshold of the gradient map was chosen by selecting the best experience value iteratively. The experiment results indicate that the best threshold selection of the gradient map can precisely segment the high-resolution color images of cotton foreign fibers.

Abstract:The traditional Otsu algorithm has to exhaustively compute all between-class variances.Based on one characteristic of Otsu threshold,this paperwork proposes a new fast algorithm.The new algorithm finds out every threshold which is equal to the integer part of the average of the mean levels of two classes,and then selects one threshold which is in accord with Otsu criterion.The traditional Otsu algorithm cannot work well when it extracts small object from gradient image,so an improved thresholding algorithm is proposed.Based on the fast Otsu algorithm provided,the improved thresholding algorithm recursively computes threshold.Experimental results show that the fast Otsu algorithm is faster than the traditional Otsu algorithm.Experimental results also show that the improved thresholding algorithm is effective to segment small object of gradient image.

Abstract:Multilevel thresholding techniques based on gray histogram are usually computationally expensive for the image segmentation. In this paper, we propose a novel thresholding extraction method based on variational mode decomposition (VMD). The improved VMD is used to decompose the histogram non recursively into several sub-modes for minimizing Otsu's objective function. Then, we can extract the thresholds easily by the minimum point search (MPS) method or the cross point search (CPS) method. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed MPS scheme exhibits more excellent capability than CPS. Further, compared with other approaches namely particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO), fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm and bacterial foraging (BF) algorithm, the proposed algorithm can get similar performance, but its computing speed is faster than others. Therefore, it could have some advantages in image preprocessing, such as fast target recognition and classification. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Image thresholding is an important and efficient image segmentation technique, which is crucial and essential for image analysis and computer vision. In this paper, we proposed a new image thresholding method based on entropy and parzen window (PW) estimation. First, the probability of each gray-level distribution is approximate by using the PW estimation. Second, by combining the obtained probability information with entropic information of the foreground and background, a new objective function is created. At last, the ideal threshold value is obtained by optimizing the objective function. By comparing with some classical thresholding methods, such as inter class variance method (OTSU), minimum error thresholding method (MET), Kapur's entropy based method (KAPUR) and the recent methods that take spatial information into consideration (2D-D histogram method, GLLV histogram method and Gabor histogram method), the proposed method, experiment on 10 images (one synthetic image, four nondestructive testing images and five real-world images), presents a better performance on the accuracy, robustness and visual effect of segmentation.

Abstract:Thresholding methods are widely used, in image segmentation because oftheir simplicity and efficiency. Most of the common thresholding methods have alot of dificulties when processing images which have unimodal histograms or lowgray level edge points. In this paper, we give a new membership function, a newfuzzy set distance definition, based on these definitions we propose a newthresholding algorithm. Experiment results in this paper show that the newalgorithm, is useful to threshold, unimodal images and, images with low graylevel edges. ICIC International © 2010.

Abstract:The segmentation method based on the optimization of only one criterion does not work well for a lot of images; even when equipped with the optimal value of the threshold of its single criterion, the segmentation program does not produce a satisfactory result. In this paper, image segmentation based on multiobjective optimization is presented. It combines 2-D maximum entropy and 2-D Otsu method using multiobjective programming theory so that optimal threshold value can not only satisfy the former but also meet the latter. Experimental results show the proposed approach can get competitive segmentation result.

The proposed algorithm deals with images by least squares processing methods, which stretch the gray level of images and make the gray values more uniform. Abstract:In this work, an iterative maximum entropy thresholding algorithm is proposed, due to the fact that the thresholds derived from the maximum entropy method are nonoptimal. Firstly, the maximum entropy thresholding algorithm is applied to the grey images which are roughly grouped into background and object. Secondly, two Gaussian distributions are fitted according to the mean and variance of each group. Because the optimal threshold is located at their intersection of two Gaussian populations, the presented scheme optimizes thresholds using an iterative scheme until converging to the optimal position. Finally, extensive experiments are performed, and the results show that the thresholds derived from the maximum entropy scheme using the proposed iterative threshold optimization approach can be converged to the optimal position.

Abstract:Image segmentation is a key technology in image processing, and threshold segmentation is one of the methods used frequently. Aimed at that only one threshold or several thresholds are set in traditional threshold-based segmentation algorithm, it is difficult to extract the complex information in an image, a new segmentation algorithm that each pixel in the image has its own threshold is proposed. In this algorithm, the threshold of a pixel in an image is estimated by calculating the mean of the grayscale values of its neighbor pixels, and the square variance of the grayscale values of the neighbor pixels are also calculated as an additional judge condition, so that the result of the proposed algorithm is the edge of the image. In fact the proposed algorithm is equal to an edge detector in image processing. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm could produce precise image edge, while it is reasonable to estimate the threshold of a pixel through the statistical information of its neighbor pixels.

Abstract:Two-dimensional(2-D) Otsu algorithm is analyzed.It is shown that when a 2-D histogram is segmented by 2-D Otsu threshold method,the within-class means is easily far from the main diagonal,so that the algorithm isn't robust enough to noises.This paper proposes a new algorithm.The new algorithm establishes a line intercept histogram directly from the 2-D information of images based on the line threshold segmentation concept.Then,it uses the Otsu criterion to find the best intercept threshold from the histogram.Furthermore,the 2-D information of images and the intercept threshold are adopted to implement the image segmentation.Compared the new algorithm with the 2-D Otsu algorithm,it demonstrates that the new algorithm can avoid both disadvantages of 2-D Otsu algorithm.Firstly,it improves the anti-noise ability.When the noise variance is more than 0.003 or stepup,it shows robustness to noises.Secondly,the processing speed of the new algorithm is faster than the fast Otsu algorithms based on 2-D histogram by two orders of magnitude,and it takes up more less memory.In conclusion,the proposed algorithm is robust anti-noise,more accurate segmentation and is suitable for applications in real time.

Abstract:We conduct an exhaustive survey of image thresholding methods, categorize them, express their formulas under a uniform notation, and finally carry their performance comparison. The thresholding methods are categorized according to the information they are exploiting, such as histogram shape, measurement space clustering, entropy, object attributes, spatial correlation, and local gray-level surface. 40 selected thresholding methods from various categories are compared in the context of nondestructive testing applications as well as for document images. The comparison is based on the combined performance measures. We identify the thresholding algorithms that perform uniformly better over nondestructive testing and document image applications. © 2004 SPIE and IS&T.

Abstract:Image segmentation plays an important and basic role in image processing and pattern recognition. Its purpose is to separate areas that do not superpose each other and to obtain the interested target. During the past few years many algorithms for image segmentation have been proposed. The popular technique is the threshold segmentation because of its simplicity and efficiency. Genetic algorithm is the immediate search method that is based on the theory of evolution which natural selection mechanism, parallel and statistics. In this paper, an optimal image thresholding using Genetic Algorithm is proposed. Compared with traditional threshold methods, the proposed method has advantages that it can implement quickly optimal threshold and have good capability and stabilization. The results show that using the proposed method can obtain satisfactory segmentation effect and save the computational time.

Abstract:Thresholding segmentation method is the commonly applied technique for extracting objects from the background of the image. If the single object in the image is clearly distinguishable from the background, the histogram of the image would be bimodal and the threshold can be easily chosen at the bottom of the histogram valley. However, histograms are not always bimodal. Thus, new methods are required to solve this problem. This paper raises a novel contrast enhancement method called range limited double-threshold multi-histogram equalization (RLDTMHE). First, we deduce the Otsu’s double-thresholds method, and divide the image into three parts with the double thresholds. In order to preserve the brightness, range of the equalized image is calculated to yield minimum absolute mean brightness error (AMBE) between the output image and the original one. Finally, each sub-image is equalized independently using the new range. Experiment results show that our algorithm obtains more clear details, while keeping the brightness of the original image very well.
