Abstract:In this work, we proposed a method for a binary classification in an EEG-based brain computer interface (BCI) with wavelet packet transform and neural networks. For feature extraction, we introduced a new method which combined the slow cortical potentials (SCPs) and the specific energy from the time-frequency domain in beta-band via the wavelet packet transform. A 3-layer perceptron established by back-propagation and the support vector machines (SVMs) were utilized for classification, respectively. We compared the performance in terms of changing the architecture of the net. The accuracy of BP network was found to be best with 4-5-1 architecture reaching an accuracy of 91.47% on test set. Meanwhile, a SVM with Gaussian kernel revealed an accuracy of 91.13% on the test set, showing that multiple types of information have great advantage over other features

Abstract:Brain-computer interface (BCI) has emerged as a promising technology to explore physiological activities and functional states of the human brain. This paper presents an Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals processing system, which consists of the compression process, reconstruction process and the classification process. The EEG signals is reconstructed with 5.318±0.08 root mean square error and 0.881±0.06 structural similarity index in short CPU time. The experiments on the two classes motor imagery EEG signals reaches up to 92% accuracy with the proposed feature extraction method. Compared with prior works, the proposed work is able to achieve better performance with high fidelity and low computational complexity.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a new method to analyze brain-computer interface (BCI) datasets. By importing approximate entropy (ApEn) and auto-correlation coefficient as additional features, we enhanced the performance of the former classification algorithm, which was merely based on slow cortical potentials (SCPs). We used k-nearest neighbor classifier, and the result testifies the value of the new features in EEG analysis.

Abstract:Currently, monitoring system of awareness of the depth of anesthesia has been more and more widely used in clinical practices. The intelligent evaluation algorithm is the key technology of this type of equipment. On the basis of studies about changes of electroencephalography (EEG) features during anesthesia, a discussion about how to select reasonable EEG parameters and classification algorithm to monitor the depth of anesthesia has taken place. A scheme which combines time domain analysis, frequency domain analysis and the variability of EEG and decision tree as classifier and least squares to compute Depth of anesthesia Index (DOAI) is proposed in this paper. Using the EEG of 40 patients who underwent general anesthesia with propofol, and the classification and the score of the EEG annotated by anesthesiologist, we verified this scheme with experiments. Classification and scoring was based on a combination of modified observer assessment of alertness/sedation (MOAA/S), and the changes of EEG parameters of patients during anesthesia. Then we used the BIS index to testify the validation of the DOAI. Results showed that Pearson's correlation coefficient between the DOAI and the BIS over the test set was 0.89. It is demonstrated that the method is feasible and has good accuracy.

Abstract:Electroencephalogram (EEG) activity from the brain is a promising biological marker that can serve as personal identification. Despite substantial efforts, it remains an unsolved problem to quantify EEG feature distribution for brain biometrics due to the complexity of the brain. In this study, we attempt to tackle EEG-based identification challenges by exploiting a novel distribution model. The distribution dissimilarity is measured by Mallows distance, a cluster similarity sensitive distance that is robust to signal noises. Specifically, EEG signals are decomposed through several statistical feature extraction methods, autoregressive model, discrete wavelet transform, and fast Fourier transform. With the dataset obtained from the real-world application, our proposed system achieves the f score accuracy of $$96.18\%$$ and half total error rate of $$2.223\%$$, which demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of utilizing EEG biometrics for personal identification applications.

Abstract:The high accuracy of electroencephalogram (EEG) signal classification is the premise for the wide application of brain computer interface (BCI). In this paper, a hybrid method consisting of multivariate empirical mode decomposition (MEMD) and common space pattern (CSP) is proposed to recognize left-hand and right-hand hypothetical motion from EEG signals. Experiments were carried out using the BCI competition II imagery database. EEG signals were decomposed into multiple intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) by MEMD. The IMF functions with high correlation were processed by CSP, and AR coefficients and entropy values were extracted as features. After genetic algorithm optimization, classification is carried out. Our research results show that the K nearest neighbor (KNN) as an optimal classification model produces 85.36% accuracy. We also compare the proposed algorithm with the existing algorithms. The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is comparable to or better than that of many existing algorithms.

Abstract:This paper analyzed the patients' and normal EEG in different physiological state, with the aid of two algorithms to calculate complexity measure. One is Kc complexity defined by Kaspar and Schuster, the other is a new statistical method to measure complexity sequences-Approximate entropy (ApEn). In our work, we analyzed two groups of EEG. Six subjects in 4 different experimental conditions are reported. The result suggests that these two algorithms could be regarded as valued methods in the study of EEG time sequence.

Abstract:In order to study the neural mechanism of brain state induced by binaural beat(BB),linear and nonlinear methods,such as power spectral density,Lempel-Ziv complexity(LZC)and brain network based on cross mutual information were applied to discuss the change of brain under two kinds of BB stimulations(alpha & beta). Thirteen subjects were involved in alpha & beta BB stimulations,and the results showed no frequency following re-sponse(FFR)by PSD of spontaneous electroencephalogram(EEG)and no obvious change by LZC. However,the information transmission among various cortical areas reduced under alpha BB stimulation but enhanced under beta BB stimulation by brain network. Therefore,brain network based on mutual information can effectively monitor the change of cerebral cortex under BB stimulation,which provides a new perspective for biological effects induced by BB stimulation.

Abstract:This study aims to explore the correlation between the operational task complexity of nuclear power plant (NPP) operators and electroencephalogram (EEG) features. Initially, we segmented EEG signals according to operational steps and extracted a total of 120 time domain, frequency domain, and time-frequency domain features. Subsequently, we applied an adaptive principal component analysis (PCA) dimensionality reduction method to process the features. On the other hand, three experts were invited to evaluate the complexity of the operational tasks, and their evaluation data were synthesized using a group decision-making approach. A correlation analysis was performed between these data and the PCA-reduced feature data, identifying the features with the highest correlation coefficient for each participant. Then we built a long short-term memory model with the data of the first group of participants to predict the task complexity value and tested it with the data of the second group of participants. Testing the model with data from the second group yielded favorable results, with a training set mean squared error (MSE) of 0.025 and a testing set MSE of 0.078. The results of this study indicate a significant correlation between specific EEG features and task complexity in the operational tasks of NPP operators. The model established through a combination of group decision making and machine learning methods effectively predicted the task complexity levels for operators in different operational tasks. This research provides a new perspective on NPP operators' cognitive load and operational tasks, holding practical significance for operator training and workload management.

Abstract:Electrical status epilepticus during sleep (ESES) is an epileptic encephalopathy in children with complex clinical manifestations. It is accompanied by specific electroencephalography (EEG) patterns of continuous spike and slow-waves. Quantifying such EEG patterns is critical to the diagnosis of ESES. While most of the existing automatic ESES quantification systems ignore the morphological variations of the signal as well as the individual variability among subjects. To address these issues, this paper presents a hybrid expert system that dedicates to mimicking the decision-making process of clinicians in ESES quantification by taking the morphological variations, individual variability, and medical knowledge into consideration. The proposed hybrid system not only offers a general scheme that could propel a semi-auto morphology analysis-based expert decision model to a fully automated ESES quantification with biogeography-based optimization (BBO), but also proposes a more precise individualized quantification system to involve the personalized characteristics by adopting an individualized parameters-selection framework. The feasibility and reliability of the proposed method are evaluated on a clinical dataset collected from twenty subjects at Children's Hospital of Fudan University, Shanghai, China. The estimation error for the individualized quantitative descriptor ESES is 0-4.32% and the average estimation error is 0.95% for all subjects. Experimental results show the presented system outperforms existing works and the individualized system significantly improves the performance of ESES quantification. The favorable results indicate that the proposed hybrid expert system for automatic ESES quantification is promising to support the diagnosis of ESES.

Abstract:The article adopted the multiscale Jensen - Shannon Divergence method for EEG complexity analysis. Then the study found that the method can distinguish between three different status (eyes closed, count, in a daze) acquisition of Alpha EEG time series, which shows three different states of Alpha EEG time series having significant differences. In each state of the three different states (eyes closed, count, in a daze), we aimed at comparing and analyzing the statistical complexity of EEG time series itself and the statistical complexity of EEG time series proxy data, finding that there are large amounts of nonlinear time series in the Alpha EEG signals. This method is also fully proved that the multiscale JSD algorithm can be used to analyze EEG signals. Attention statistical complexity can be used as a measure of brain function parameter, which can be applied to the auxiliary clinical brain function evaluation in the future.

Abstract:Epilepsy is one of the most common complex brain disorders which is a chronic non-communicable disease caused by paroxysmal abnormal super-synchronous electrical activity of brain neurons. This paper proposed an electroencephalogram (EEG) based real-time approach to detect epilepsy seizures. Discrete wavelet transform and eight eigenvalues’ algorithms are applied to extract features in different sub-frequency bands. Then support vector machine is employed for three-classes classification of health control, seizure free and seizure active, and finally RUSBoosted tree Ensemble method is used for real-time seizure onset detection. The proposed algorithm is evaluated using two public datasets: one short-term dataset named UB and one long-term dataset named CHB-MIT. The results show that the algorithm achieves 97% accuracy and 96.67% sensitivity in the three-classes classification of health control, seizure-free and seizure-active groups in UB dataset, and 96.38% accuracy, 96.15% sensitivity, 3.24% false positive rate for the real time seizure onset detection in CHB-MIT Dataset.

Abstract:Spatio-temporal pattern analysis of EEG is an important tool in brain research. An EEG pattern analysis system based on a hierarchical multi-method approach is proposed here. The system consists of multiple steps including extraction of target signal, acquisition of intracranial electric activity distribution, adaptive segmentation of EEG and spatio-temporal pattern recognition. Some modern signal processing methods such as common spatial subspace decomposition, hidden Markov model are adopted. This paper also proposes an algorithm named LORETA-FOCUSS to estimate the current density inside the brain with a high spatial resolution. Microstate analysis of EEG is extended to the 3-D situation. The system was applied to the brain computer interface problem and achieved the highest accuracy of 88.89% with an average accuracy of 81.48% when classifying two imaginary movement tasks, while the data were not manually pre-selected. The result has proved spatio-temporal EEG pattern analysis is an efficient way in brain research.

Electrophysiological Brain Network Estimation with Simultaneous Scalp EEG and Intracranial EEG: Inference Algorithm and Applications

Abstract:Activity in the human brain is composed of complex firing patterns and interactions among neurons and neuronal circuits. The neuroimaging field underwent a paradigm shift over the past decades from mapping tasked evoked brain regions of activations towards identifying and characterizing the dynamic brain networks of coordinating brain regions. Electrophysiological signals are the direct manifestation of brain activities, thus characterizing the whole brain electrophysiological networks (WBEN) can serve as a fundamental tool for neuroscience studies and clinical applications. The electrophysiological network inferred from electroencephalogram (EEG) source imaging suffers from low accuracy limited by the Restricted Isometry Property (RIP), while the invasive EEG-derived electrophysiological networks can only characterize partial brain regions where invasive electrodes reside. In this work, we introduce the first framework for the integration of scalp EEG and intracranial EEG (iEEG) for WBEN estimation with a principled estimation framework based on state-space models, where an Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm is designed to infer the state variables and brain connectivity simultaneously. We validated the proposed method on synthetic data, and the results revealed improved performance compared to traditional two-step methods using scalp EEG only, which demonstrates the importance of the inclusion of iEEG signal for WBEN estimation. For real data with simultaneous EEG and iEEG, we applied the developed framework to understand the information flows of the encoding and maintenance phases during the working memory task. The information flows between the subcortical and cortical regions are delineated, which highlights more significant information flows from cortical to subcortical regions compared to maintenance phases. The results are consistent with previous research findings, however with the view of the whole brain scope, which underscores the unique utility of the proposed framework.

Abstract:Background electroencephalography (EEG), recorded with scalp electrodes, in children with electrical status epilepticus during slow-wave sleep (ESES) syndrome and control subjects has been analyzed. We considered 10 ESES patients, all right-handed and aged 3–9 years. The 10 control individuals had the same characteristics of the ESES ones but presented a normal EEG. Recordings were undertaken in the awake and relaxed states with their eyes open. The complexity of background EEG was evaluated using the permutation entropy (PE) and sample entropy (SampEn) in combination with the ANOVA test. It can be seen that the entropy measures of EEG are significantly different between the ESES patients and normal control subjects. Then, a classification framework based on entropy measures and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) classifier is proposed to distinguish ESES and normal EEG signals. The results are promising and a classification accuracy of about 89% is achieved.

Abstract:Aiming at the topic of electroencephalogram (EEG) pattern recognition in brain computer interface (BCI), a classification method based on probabilistic neural network (PNN) with supervised learning was presented in this paper. It applied the recognition rate of training samples to the learning progress of network parameters, The learning vector quantization is employed to group training samples and the Genetic algorithm (GA) is used for training the network's smoothing parameters and hidden central vector for determining hidden neurons. Utilizing the standard dataset 1(a) of BCI Competition 2003 and comparing with other classification methods, the experiment results show that this way has the best performance of pattern recognition, and the classification accuracy can reach 93.8%, which improves over 5% compared with the best result (88.7%) of the competition. This technology provides an effective way to EEG classification in practical system of BCI.

Abstract:The devices that can read Electroencephalography (EEG) signals have been widely used for Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs). Popularity in the field of BCIs has increased in recent years with the development of several consumer-grade EEG devices that can detect human cognitive states in real-time and deliver feedback to enhance human performance. Several studies are conducted to understand the fundamentals and essential aspects of EEG in BCIs. However, the significant issue of how can consumer-grade EEG devices be used to control mechatronic systems effectively has been given less attention. In this paper, we have designed and implemented an EEG BCI system using the OpenBCI Cyton headset and a user interface running a game. We employ real-world participants to play a game to gather training data that was later put into multiple machine learning models, including a linear discriminant analysis (LDA), k-nearest neighbours (KNN), and a convolutional neural network (CNN). After training the machine learning models, a validation phase of the experiment took place where participants tried to play the same game but without direct control, utilising the outputs of the machine learning models to determine how the game moved. We find that a CNN trained to the specific user playing the game performed with the highest activation accuracy from the machine learning models tested, allowing for future implementation with a mechatronic system.

EEG Classification Using Sparse Bayesian Extreme Learning Machine for Brain–computer Interface

Abstract:Mu rhythm is a spontaneous neural response occurring during a motor imagery (MI) task and has been increasingly applied to the design of brain–computer interface (BCI). Accurate classification of MI is usually rather difficult to be achieved since mu rhythm is very weak and likely to be contaminated by other background noises. As an extension of the single layer feedforward network, extreme learning machine (ELM) has recently proven to be more efficient than support vector machine that is a benchmark for MI-related EEG classification. With probabilistic inference, this study introduces a sparse Bayesian ELM (SBELM)-based algorithm to improve the classification performance of MI. SBELM is able to automatically control the model complexity and exclude redundant hidden neurons by combining advantageous of both ELM and sparse Bayesian learning. The effectiveness of SBELM for MI-related EEG classification is validated on a public dataset from BCI Competition IV IIb in comparison with several other competing algorithms. Superior classification accuracy confirms that the proposed SBELM-based algorithm is a promising candidate for performance improvement of an MI BCI.
