Abstract:Studies show that the gain from China's remarkable growth of the past 35 years has not been evenly shared, especially through the intergenerational transmission of income. To address this concern, we use data from China Health and Nutrition Survey and find the intergenerational income elasticity to be 0.466 in 2011, which suggests that sons' incomes are affected by their fathers' economic statuses to a large extent. A cross-country comparison indicates that the degree of generational income mobility in China is lower than that in many developed nations. Meanwhile, by investigating possible transmission channels, we find that the fathers' investments in the sons' education and occupation play substantial roles in intergenerational transmission of income. The results not only demonstrate the trends in intergenerational income mobility in China, but also identify the most likely transmission channels, which is of great importance to improving social equality.

Abstract:This article analyzes both the current situation regarding education inequality in China, and its formation mechanisms. Policies promoting education have lead to remarkable progress in educational attainment, and also effectively decreased educational inequality. However, substantial inequalities in educational attainment remain, even though sustainable progress has been realized. Decomposition results using the Gini coefficient and Shapley value approach based on regression analysis indicate that the greatest contributing factors to educational inequality involve the urban–rural and social stratification divisions. Moreover, the household register system which divides city and country, as well as increasing income inequality is deepening institutional barriers and stratum differentiation. Though gender and regional gaps have been reduced significantly, the population residing in economically disadvantaged areas, especially females, still warrants social concern. In addition, age related decomposition results indicate that increasing educational attainment for the young plays a key role in reducing education inequality. At last, we argue that more educational investment should be allocated to disadvantaged groups and lower income groups; especially eliminating some institutional barriers such as the hukou system, unequal distribution of good quality educational resources, and so on.
Inequality in Basic Education in China: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract:China has achieved tremendous economic success over the past three decades; however, this remarkable economic development has come at the expense of an equal and equitable distribution of social and educational opportunity across the nation. This article presents a review of contemporary literature on the longstanding issue of educational inequality in China. In particular, it focuses on empirical research of educational inequality in three main areas: urban-rural inequality, regional inequality, and gender inequality. Four key research questions are addressed in the article: (1) What is the current state of educational inequality in China and how has it changed over time? (2) What are the determinants of overall inequality in schooling? (3) What are the main causes of educational inequality in China? (4) What strategies should the Chinese government adopt in order to promote equality and equity in education? The article concludes with discussions on the strengths and limitations of the existing body of work and directions for future research.

Abstract:This article studies educational inequalities in China by measuring both educational attainment and educational expectations using the 2010 nationally representative data from the China Family Panel Study. We find that educational inequalities have increased over the past several decades, and these inequalities are mainly reflected in the widening gaps in higher education between rural and urban residents. This is true for both educational attainment and expectations. Because parental education level is another significant factor affecting both educational attainment and expectations, imminent measures are needed to stop the vicious cycle of translating existing educational inequalities into larger inequalities in later generations.

Abstract:China’s rapid socio-economic and demographic changes have raised concerns about growing socio-economic inequalities in children’s well-being. Drawing on the data from the 2010 and 2012 waves of the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS), this study systematically examines the socio-economic inequalities in children’s objective and subjective well-being as well as differentials in children’s growth trajectories. We find strong evidence of persistent urban advantage in an array of child development indicators, despite the overall economic boom since the beginning of the reform era. However, we also find that children from families of low socio-economic status (SES) attained certain non-cognitive advantages relative to those from better-off families, which may help offset certain negative impacts of low SES. Furthermore, the experience of rural-to-urban migration appears to be beneficial to rural-origin children as their exposure to a novel urban environment likely raises their educational aspiration, among other measures, which in turn is related to increased educational investment.

Abstract:Despite China's recent strong economic growth, there are still many educational disparities, significant delays in completing educational objectives, and unequal educational quality. They include family involvement in society, insufficient investments in education, unfair distribution of education funding, the impact of regional economies, inappropriate policies and regulations, and corruption in education. The current state of educational inequality between regions, urban and rural locations, and class families is examined in this paper. The causes of educational inequality are also found to be multifaceted, mainly due to uneven regional economic development, inadequate policy implementation, the importance families attach to their children's education, and other factors. To achieve equity in education, by identifying the issues and delving into the reasons, the author seeks solutions to the issue. After researching, the author believes that the problem of educational inequity can be effectively remedied through measures such as balancing educational resources, increasing educational input, improving input distribution models, improving educational policies and regulations, and innovating and improving educational models.

Abstract:Educational inequality is caused by regional economic differences, educational resource allocation differences, class differences, and other factors. The concept of equal rights in education is an extension of equal rights in education’s political and economic fields. It refers to an important element of democratization of education, in which people are not restricted by political economy, culture, ethnicity, faith, gender, and geography. In law, people have the same right to education and have the same access to education. Conversely, education inequality still exists, and people suffer from certain discrimination or unfair treatment in education. Despite the rapid economic development in the world in recent years and the obvious progress in education investment and development, inequality in education is still widespread. This paper briefly examines educational inequality in four areas: the differences in education and the pursuit of equality between blacks and whites in American education; the educational problems and social reproduction of children in rural China; the influence of black students in the pursuit of educational equality and the influence of assimilation education; and also gender inequality in the field of education in rural China. Based on the principle of pragmatism, this paper attempts to seek the real reasons and substance behind the phenomenon through the current educational inequality situation to discover the factors that lead to educational inequality.

Abstract:While increasing income inequality in China has been commented on and studied extensively, relatively little analysis is available on inequality in other dimensions of human development. Using data from different sources, this paper presents some basic facts on the evolution of spatial inequalities in education and healthcare in China over the long run. In the era of economic reforms, as the foundations of education and healthcare provision have changed, so has the distribution of illiteracy and infant mortality. Across provinces and within provinces, between rural and urban areas and within rural and urban areas, social inequalities have increased substantially since the reforms began.
Changing Patterns of Inequality of Educational Opportunity in Basic Education in China

Abstract:Grasping the modes and conditions of the evolution of educational inequality is a research endeavor that is indispensable to the promotion of equity in education. Different mechanisms underlie the changes in inequality of opportunity that arise from differences in ability and those that arise from differences in structural endowment. The impact that family resources have on these two kinds of inequality vary depending on their attributes. For this reason, we have divided family resources into endogenous and exogenous. This paper uses data from the third, fourth and fifth national censuses to provide a systematic empirical examination of inequality in China's basic education from 1976 to 2000 and the changes over this period. We conclude that educational inequality attributable to endogenous family resources, which are less subject to interference from external social conditions and social processes, is persistent and grows steadily. While inequality attributable to exogenous family resources may lessen as a result of educational expansion or other large-scale movements for social equity; conversely, such inequality may increase if the opposite occurs.

Abstract:<p>There is great inequality of educational resources between different provinces in China due to unbalanced economic development. Despite continued redistribution of financial resources by the central government in favor of poorer provinces, educational inequality remains. In this paper, we argue that focusing on educational resources is far from sufficient. Poorer provinces do not only suffer from a lower level of educational resources, but they also have more children to educate, i.e. a greater need for education. Combining and analyzing the data in the Sixth National Population Census of China and the official statistics on education spending and resources, we found that provincial-level variations in the child population and the child dependency ratio have made access to educational resources even more unequal given the unequal financial capacity at the provincial level. Poorer provinces face a higher child dependency ratio and have lower economic development, and these two factors jointly lead to limited educational resources. Apart from a much higher level of redistribution in favor of less developed provinces, encouraging more balanced distribution of teachers and more broadly promoting economic equality are essential to reduce inequality in educational resources in China.</p>

Abstract:Using data from the 2012-2018 waves of the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS), we investigate how parenting practices vary by parents' perception of inequality in contemporary China. We ask three questions: (1) Whether and how do parents' perceptions of inequality differ by their socioeconomic background? (2) Are parenting practices related to parents' perception of inequality? (3) Whether and how the relationship between parenting practices and perception of inequality varies across parents of different socioeconomic status (SES)? The results show that the higher the SES of parents, the more pessimistic is their perception of inequality. In addition, parents who are more aware of income inequality tend to spend more money on children's education, have higher expectations for their children's academic performance and educational achievement, and are more engaged in intensive parenting behaviors than parents who perceive income inequality to be less severe. Mothers' perceptions of inequality are more strongly associated with investment in children's education than those of fathers. In addition, the relationship between perceived inequality and parental investment in out-of-school education only varies by family SES among mothers.

New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development

Abstract:This paper reviews how income inequality at the micro and regional levels influenced the inequality in educational outcomes for children and adolescents in China over the past decades. First, we find that the economic condition of the family influences children's and adolescentsâ€™ education through home educational resources and parental involvement. Second, income disparity is significantly correlated with the regional differences in educational outcomes. Finally, the differences in the development of child and adolescent education between different regions are mainly due to the uneven distribution of educational resources, which is closely related to the public education financing system and local economic development.
Child Education and the Family Income Gradient in China

Abstract:This paper looks at the relation between education and family income using a 2008-2009 survey of nearly 10,000 children in 15 cities and nine provinces throughout China. We use school test scores on mathematics and language, as well as parent-reported educational progress, out-of-pocket expenses, and self-reported quality of schooling. Across all measures, children from wealthier families do better, but the gap is much smaller for older children than younger children in rural areas and is almost entirely gone at the end of secondary school. In Chinese cities and in Western countries like the US the opposite is the case, with the gap between children from poor and rich households staying constant or even widening as the kids get older. Our explanation is that it takes a generation of universal education for ability, education, and parental income to become highly correlated, which will already have happened in Chinese cities and in Western countries, but is only just now happening in rural areas in China. Accordingly, the relation between family income and child ability increases over generations, reducing future education and income mobility.

Abstract:Using the 2007 urban household education survey data,collected from 21 cities by the National Bureau of Statistics of China,this study examines the inequality of household education expenditure by the child's education stages and household income levels.Our study obtains the following findings: First,the household expenditure on school-related activities is obviously higher in the non-compulsory education stages(kindergarten and high school) than that in the compulsory education stage(elementary and junior high school),while the pattern of education expenditure outside school is the opposite.Second,the inequality of education expenditure spent outside school is significantly higher than that of school expenditure,while the outside-school expenditure has become the major cause of the overall education expenditure inequality.Finally,in high school,the outside-school education expenditure was the highest,while in the elementary school stage,the inequality in outside school expenditure was the highest.

Abstract:The relationship between intra-regional inequality in educational resources and income inequality has always been the focus of social development and equity issues. Using the education Gini coefficient as the main indicator for portraying educational inequality, this paper selects relevant provincial panel data to study the relationship between inter-regional educational inequality and the widening of the income distribution gap in China, and finds that: 1) China's inter-regional educational inequality is positively correlated with the income distribution gap; 2) Over time, the effects of unequal access to education and widening economic disparities are becoming more pronounced. In order to stop the income gap from expanding due to educational inequality, the government should invest more in education, boost the rate at which educational resources are used, and support the coordinated growth of interregional education. This article fills the research gap on the relationship between educational resources and income in the last decade and contributes to the national education field.

Abstract:This paper offers one of the first pieces of empirical evidence on the impact of inequality of opportunity on household education investment by using the panel data from China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) in three waves (2010, 2012 and 2014). Our result suggests that inequality of opportunity has a negative effect on household education expenditures. This result is robust to a series of robustness checks. Furthermore, for relatively disadvantaged households (household heads with less education, income, or rural hukou status), inequality of opportunity has a larger negative effect on their education expenditures. Policy suggestions to lower inequality of opportunity may include reducing labor market discrimination based on gender and hukou status, balancing education resources to create more equal educational opportunities, and offering children education subsidies in low-income families.

Abstract:The impact of social origin on educational attainment is conditioned on the social context in which people live. In recent decades, with changes in the Chinese society, how has the impact of social origin on educational inequality changed? Based on an analysis of 70 birth cohorts, this study details the effect of social origin on educational inequality and its trends over the past 70 years. The results of this study also indicate that the historical stages hypothesis (HSH) and model-shift hypothesis (MSH) emphasized in previous studies cannot fully describe the historical changes in educational inequality. In addition to macrosocial processes, there may exist other structural factors that also affect educational inequality but are neglected. The social context and its transformation, which shaped the relationship between social origin and educational inequality, need to be examined in more detail.

Abstract:Using a representative household survey for 1995, 2002, 2007, and 2013, we show that education plays a pivotal role in shaping wage inequality in urban China. We find that education was a major contributor to increased wage inequality between 1995 and 2013. The returns to education remained high after 2007 despite a large inflow of college-educated workers. Although regional wage inequality declined from 2007–13, regional wage inequality among educated workers did not. Residual wage inequality increased, and the within inequality of educated workers increased faster than that of the less educated. We argue that China's education expansion seems insufficient to narrow the educational wage gap, and a lack of labor mobility for educated workers prevents the decline in returns to education in specific regions.
Income-Related Children's Health Inequality and Health Achievement in China

Abstract:INTRODUCTION:This study assessed income-related health inequality and health achievement in children in China, and additionally, examined province-level variations in health achievement.METHODS:Longitudinal data on 19,801 children under 18 years of age were derived from the China Health and Nutrition Survey. Income-related health inequality and health achievement were measured by the Health Concentration and Health Achievement Indices, respectively. Panel data with a fixed effect multiple regression model was employed to examine province-level variations in health achievement.RESULTS:A growing trend was towards greater health inequality among Chinese children over the last two decades. Although health achievement was getting better over time, the pro-rich inequality component has lessened the associated gain in achievement. Health achievement was positively impacted by middle school enrollments, the urbanization rate, inflation-adjusted per capita gross domestic product, and per capita public health spending.CONCLUSION:This study has provided evidence that average health status of Chinese children has improved, but inequality has widened. Widening inequality slowed the growth in health achievement for children over time. There were wide variations in health achievement throughout China.

Abstract:This paper discusses the status and changes in educational attainment and gender inequality in education for the Chinese population based on the data from the 7th National Census of China and previous censuses since 1982. The results indicate that gender inequality in education has lessened while educational attainment has improved. However, it is necessary to continue to eradicate illiteracy in the West, further promote compulsory education rates, increase the advancement rate to high school, and reduce the urban–rural gap in education to further develop education. This paper indicates that the increased educational opportunities for women combined with their relatively superior academic abilities have resulted in a new reversed gender inequality in that males are at a disadvantage, especially in higher education. The fact that women have benefited more from the expansion of higher education than men have was an unintended consequence of China’s one-child fertility policy since the family resources are less diluted by fewer children in a household and daughters are regarded as long-term family members. This paper further reveals that although women outperform men at every level of the educational system, they often voluntarily withdraw from pursuing doctoral degrees due to the increasing pressure as they age and age discrimination which drives them to enter marriage and the labor market earlier than men do.
