Abstract:This paper studies how to conduct efficiency assessment using data envelopment analysis (DEA) in interval and/or fuzzy input–output environments. A new pair of interval DEA models is constructed on the basis of interval arithmetic, which differs from the existing DEA models handling interval data in that the former is a linear CCR model without the need of extra variable alternations and uses a fixed and unified production frontier (i.e. the same constraint set) to measure the efficiencies of decision-making units (DMUs) with interval input and output data, while the latter is usually a nonlinear optimization problem with the need of extra variable alternations or scale transformations and utilizes variable production frontiers (i.e. different constraint sets) to measure interval efficiencies. Ordinal preference information and fuzzy data are converted into interval data through the estimation of permissible intervals and α-level sets, respectively, and are incorporated into the interval DEA models. The proposed interval DEA models are developed for measuring the lower and upper bounds of the best relative efficiency of each DMU with interval input and output data, which are different from the interval formed by the worst and the best relative efficiencies of each DMU. A minimax regret-based approach (MRA) is introduced to compare and rank the efficiency intervals of DMUs. Two numerical examples are provided to show the applications of the proposed interval DEA models and the preference ranking approach.

Abstract:Efficiency assessment by using data envelopment analysis (DEA) in interval environment is studied. Two parameters with regard to the input and output are introduced to characterize the variability of the production possibility sets. The extended production facets with different production possibility sets are determined. The inclusion relation between different extended production facets is discussed, and self-evaluation models are constructed to calculate the interval efficiency of the decisionmaking units (DMUs) with the optimal production facet. By setting self-evaluation as a target, the aggressive and benevolent cross-efficiency models are established based on the likelihood between the values of self-evaluation and peer evaluation. The analysis of the models yields the interval cross-efficiency matrices and the weight allocation method that is more advantageous to the DMU for aggregating the interval cross-efficiency matrices. An example is used to illustrate the applications of the models.

Imprecise data, for example, can be expressed in the form of the interval data or mixtures of interval data and exact data. Abstract:Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a non-parametric technique for measuring the efficiency of decision making units (DMU) with exact input and output terms. So far, a number of DEA models with interval data have been developed. The radial DEA model such as CCR or BCC model with interval data are well known as basic DEA models with interval data. However, these radial DEA models have some defects. In this study, we develop a new approach based upon the slacks-based measurement (SBM) of super-efficiency model for dealing with interval data in DEA. The SBM super-efficiency DEA model can not only discriminate the performance of efficient DMUs from inefficient ones, but can distinguish between the efficient DMUs. In addition, this model can overcome the drawback that the super-efficiency model can be infeasible under variable returns to scale (VRS) assumption. An illustrative example is provided to verify the idea of this paper and show its potential application and validity.

Abstract:Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a widely used approach for evaluating the relative efficiency of decision-making units (DMUs) in multiple-input and multiple-output situations. Although traditional DEA models use precise input–output data, real-world problems often involve mixed uncertainties, including fuzziness and stochasticity. This paper focuses on dealing with situations where inputs and outputs have both fuzzy and stochastic characteristics, using DEA models for efficiency evaluation. Through the integration of the α -level approach and chance-constrained programming, novel DEA models with fuzzy stochastic variables (FSVs) are proposed, and deterministic equivalent interval DEA models with linear constraints are provided to address this problem. The main contributions and advantages of the proposed model over existing DEA models with FSVs are fourfold: (1) linear and always-feasible models are proposed; (2) a fixed and uniform production boundary (i.e., the same set of constraints) is used to measure the efficiency of DMUs with fuzzy stochastic input and output; (3) the obtained results can distinguish between efficient and inefficient DMUs; (4) Equivalent interval DEA models were obtained to provide a more comprehensive assessment of the efficiency of the DMUs. Finally, a numerical example is presented to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed models and the feasibility of the obtained solutions.

Abstract:Efficiency is a relative measure that allows assessment across different ranges. Evaluating the performance of decision-making units (DMUs) from an optimistic perspective yields the best relative efficiency (optimistic efficiency), which establishes an efficiency frontier. Conversely, evaluating from a pessimistic perspective produces the worst relative efficiency (pessimistic efficiency) and creates an inefficiency frontier. This study examines the efficiency of DMUs in two scenarios and proposes models for adjustment coefficient. The pessimistic and optimistic efficiencies are adjusted to the lower and upper bounds of the DMUs based on the adjustment coefficient, enabling determination of efficiency intervals for all DMUs, as well as evaluation and ranking. A Hurwicz criterion-based approach is introduced and applied to compare and rank the interval efficiencies of DMUs. Two numerical examples are examined using the proposed DEA adjustment coefficient models to demonstrate its potential application and validity.

Abstract:Conventional DEA models assume deterministic and precise data for input and output observations in a static situation, and their DMUs are often ranked incompletely. To work with interval data, DMUS' complete ranking as well as dynamic assessment issues synchronously, we put forward a hybrid model for evaluating the relative efficiencies of a set of DMUs over an observed time period with consideration of interval DEA, super- efficiency DEA and dynamic DEA. However, few researchers, if any, considered this issue within the combination of these three models. The hybrid model proposed in this paper enables us to (i) take interval data in input and output into account, (ii) rank DEA efficient DMUs completely, (iii) obtain the overall dynamic efficiency of DMUs over the entire observed period. We finally illustrate the calculation procedure of the proposed approach by a numerical example.

Abstract:Based on literatures in recent years on DEA models with interval data, this paper aims at enhancing the interval efficiencies for inefficient DMUs. Ideal points are used to determine the extent of inefficient DMUs that can be improved. Numbers of specific programs are established to obtain the target point as a benchmarking on the efficient frontier, and bring the adjusted inputs and outputs as respectively close to their target ones as possible. The interval efficiencies can be improved by increasing only outputs, decreasing only inputs or adjusting both simultaneously, so that the lower bound of the interval efficiency can be increased as much as possible while the upper bound can attains one. The research is based on the interval data setting, so the approach is proposed to make sure the final adjusted data are still interval data. Finally, a numerical example is shown to illustrate the idea of the method.

Abstract:Purpose - The traditional data envelopment analysis (DEA) model as a non-parametric technique can measure the relative efficiencies of a decision-making units (DMUs) set with exact values of inputs and outputs, but it cannot handle the imprecise data. The purpose of this paper is to establish a super efficiency interval data envelopment analysis (IDEA) model, an IDEA model based on cross-evaluation and a cross evaluation-based measure of super efficiency IDEA model. And the authors apply the proposed approach to data on the 29 public secondary schools in Greece, and further demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach. Design/methodology/approach - In this paper, based on the IDEA model, the authors propose an improved version of establishing a super efficiency IDEA model, an IDEA model based on cross-evaluation, and then present a cross evaluation-based measure of super efficiency IDEA model by combining the super efficiency method with cross-evaluation. The proposed model cannot only discriminate the performance of efficient DMUs from inefficient ones, but also can distinguish between the efficient DMUs. By using the proposed approach, the overall performance of all DMUs with interval data can be fully ranked. Findings - A numerical example is presented to illustrate the application of the proposed methodology. The result shows that the proposed approach is an effective and practical method to measure the efficiency of the DMUs with imprecise data. Practical implications - The proposed model can avoid the fact that the original DEA model can only distinguish the performance of efficient DMUs from inefficient ones, but cannot discriminate between the efficient DMUs. Originality/value - This paper introduces the effective method to obtain the complete rank of all DMUs with interval data.

Abstract:In a recent paper by Wang and Yang (2007) [6], a pair of bounded data envelopment analysis (DEA) models were proposed to measure the overall performances of a group of decision-making units (DMUs), which were characterized by interval efficiencies. In this paper, we show by a numerical example that the bounded DEA models are incapable of determining an efficiency interval for any DMU when there is a zero value for each output. A pair of improved bounded DEA models is thus proposed to overcome the drawback. Another example involving performance measurement of countries participating in the Athens 2004 Summer Olympic Games is presented to show that the proposed approach is an effective and practical method for performance analysis in real world situations. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a popular mathematical tool for analyzing the relative efficiency of homogenous decision-making units (DMUs). However, the existing DEA models cannot tackle the newly confronted applications with imprecise and negative data as well as undesirable outputs simultaneously. Thus, we introduce undesirable outputs into modified slack-based measure (MSBM) model and propose an interval-modified slack-based measure (IMSBM) model, which extends the application of interval DEA (IDEA) in fields that concern with less undesirable outputs. The novelties of the model are that it considers the undesirable outputs while dealing with imprecise and negative data, and it is slack-based. Furthermore, the model with undesirable outputs is proven translation-invariant and unit-invariant. Moreover, a numerical example is provided to illustrate the changes of the lower and upper bounds of the efficiency score after considering the undesirable outputs. The empirical results show that, without considering undesirable outputs, most of the lower bounds of the efficiency scores will be overestimated when the DMUs are weakly efficient and inefficient. The upper bound will also change after considering undesirable outputs when the DMU is inefficient. Finally, an improved degree of preference approach is introduced to rank the DMUs.

Abstract:How to evaluate the performance of decision-making units (DMUs) with fixed-sum outputs is a timely and challenging question in data envelopment analysis (DEA). Two major challenges are (1) how to determine a common equilibrium efficient frontier and (2) how to deal with multiple feasible equilibrium efficient frontiers. This paper first uses a simple dataset to illustrate the possibility of multiple equilibrium efficient frontiers and the corresponding major differences in the DMUs' efficiencies and rankings resulting from these frontiers. We address these challenges by considering all feasible equilibrium efficient frontiers and develop several models to obtain the corresponding efficiency intervals, ranking intervals and dominance relations for the DMUs with fixed-sum outputs. We illustrate the proposed approach with two numerical examples and show that it gives more informative results than previous DEA approaches. For example, there are interesting dominance relations between DMUs under the fixed-sum outputs; yet these relations do not exist when there are no fixed-sum outputs. In addition, the efficiency ranges and ranking intervals can be narrowed by accounting for policy suggestions such as adjustment constraints of fixed-sum outputs for DMUs. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The fuzzy data envelopment analysis (FDEA) method lacks sufficient discrimination power to rank efficient decision making units (DMUs) with fuzzy data; moreover, it evaluates DMUs using only self-evaluation. This paper develops the fuzzy cross efficiency (FCE) DEA model that combines self-evaluation with peer-evaluation to eliminate the weaknesses of traditional FDEA. This method solves the efficiency evaluation problem in fuzzy environments from a new perspective. An effective method is provided to solve this model, and the ranking results of DMUs at different α -levels are obtained. Finally, an example is given to illustrate the proposed method in greater detail.

Abstract:Inverse data envelopment analysis (InDEA) is a well-known approach for short-term forecasting of a given decision-making unit (DMU). The conventional InDEA models use the production possibility set (PPS) that is composed of an evaluated DMU with current inputs and outputs. In this paper, we replace the fluctuated DMU with a modified DMU involving renewal inputs and outputs in the PPS since the DMU with current data cannot be allowed to establish the new PPS. Besides, the classical DEA models such as InDEA are assumed to consider perfect knowledge of the input and output values but in numerous situations, this assumption may not be realistic. The observed values of the data in these situations can sometimes be defined as interval numbers instead of crisp numbers. Here, we extend the InDEA model to interval data for evaluating the relative efficiency of DMUs. The proposed models determine the lower and upper bounds of the inputs of a given DMU separately when its interval outputs are changed in the performance analysis process. We aim to remain the current interval efficiency of a considered DMU and the interval efficiencies of the remaining DMUs fixed or even improve compared with the current interval efficiencies.

Abstract:Data Envelopment Analysis is a powerful tool for evaluating the efficiency of decision-making units for the purpose of ranking, comparing, and differentiating efficient and inefficient units. Classical Data Envelopment Analysis methods operate by measuring the efficiency of each DMU compared to similar units without considering their internal workings and structures, which make them unsuitable for cases where DMUs are multistaged processes with intermediate products or when inputs and outputs are ambiguous or nonconfigurable. In problems that involve uncertainty, intuitionistic fuzzy sets can offer a better representation and interpretation of information than classic sets. In this paper, the noncooperative network data envelopment analysis model of Liang et al. (2008), which is based on Stackelberg game theory and efficiency decomposition, is expanded using the concepts of best and worst relative returns Data Envelopment Analysis model of Azizi et al. (2013) into an interval efficiency estimation model with α-β cuts for two-stage DMUs with trapezoidal intuitionistic fuzzy data. Furthermore, the method of Yue (2011) is used to rank these DMUs in terms of their intuitionistic fuzzy interval efficiency. A numerical example is also provided to illustrate the application of the proposed bounded two-stage intuitionistic Data Envelopment Analysis model.

Abstract:Performance assessment often has to be conducted under uncertainty. This paper proposes a ''fuzzy expected value approach'' for data envelopment analysis (DEA) in which fuzzy inputs and fuzzy outputs are first weighted, respectively, and their expected values then used to measure the optimistic and pessimistic efficiencies of decision making units (DMUs) in fuzzy environments. The two efficiencies are finally geometrically averaged for the purposes of ranking and identifying the best performing DMU. The proposed fuzzy expected value approach and its resultant models are illustrated with three numerical examples, including the selection of a flexible manufacturing system (FMS).

Abstract:Data envelopment analysis (DEA) requires input and output data to be precisely known. This is not always the case in real applications. This paper proposes two new fuzzy DEA models constructed from the perspective of fuzzy arithmetic to deal with fuzziness in input and output data in DEA. The new fuzzy DEA models are formulated as linear programming models and can be solved to determine fuzzy efficiencies of a group of decision-making units (DMUs). An analytical fuzzy ranking approach is developed to compare and rank the fuzzy efficiencies of the DMUs. The proposed fuzzy DEA models and ranking approach are applied to evaluate the performances of eight manufacturing enterprises in China.
