Abstract:Soil and climate monitoring plays an important role in orchard farming management. Wireless sensor network(WSN) is an efficient approach for monitoring large-scale orchard with densely distributed smart nodes. Combined with a project of facility cultivation of local pear variety in Zhejiang province, China, a newly designed structure of WSN combining network clustering and route enhancing is proposed with an aim at facilitating node deployment in orchard and regular network maintenance. The topology of wireless sensing cluster, hard- and soft- design of wireless node and routing enhancement are elaborated. The testing result shows that the proposed scheme has the capability of robust data transmission, high sensing accuracy of soil and climate parameters and excellent data consistency. The design method proposed in the paper is also suitable for other farmland monitoring system.

Abstract:We developed L 3 SN, a scalable, longevous, adaptive, and internet accessible wireless sensor network system for agriculture information monitoring, which is meticulously designed to meet the requirement of thousands hectares coverage, years of time monitoring and the adverse environment.The system architecture, the agriculture sensor device, the mesh protocol, and the web-based information processing platform are introduced.We also presented some implementation experience.The mesh protocol (LayerMesh) is highlighted, in which "stair scheduling" and "distributed dynamic load-balancing" are proposed to response the scalability, longevity and adaptivity requirements.We believe the design of L 3 SN is useful to many other large-scale, longevous applications such as hydrologic monitoring, geological monitoring etc.
Does Wireless Sensor Network Scale? A Measurement Study on GreenOrbs

Abstract:Sensor networks are deemed suitable for large-scale deployments in the wild for a variety of applications. In spite of the remarkable efforts the community put to build the sensor systems, an essential question still remains unclear at the system level, motivating us to explore the answer from a point of real-world deployment view. Does the wireless sensor network really scale? We present findings from a large-scale operating sensor network system, GreenOrbs, with up to 330 nodes deployed in the forest. We instrument such an operating network throughout the protocol stack and present observations across layers in the network. Based on our findings from the system measurement, we propose and make initial efforts to validate three conjectures that give potential guidelines for future designs of large-scale sensor networks. 1) A small portion of nodes bottlenecks the entire network, and most of the existing network indicators may not accurately capture them. 2) The network dynamics mainly come from the inherent concurrency of network operations instead of environment changes. 3) The environment, although the dynamics are not as significant as we assumed, has an unpredictable impact on the sensor network. We suggest that an event-based routing structure can be trained and thus better adapted to the wild environment when building a large-scale sensor network.

Abstract:As a large scale real sensor network system, GreenOrbs reveals that locating sensor nodes in the forest still faces great challenges because of volatile and fluctuating environmental factors. In this paper, we present a novel localization scheme, EARL, which provides accurate reference nodes and good ranging quality. We exam the range quality along routing paths by taking complex environmental factors into account, such as forest density, temperature and humidity. To improve localization accuracy, we use power scanning technique to judge the accuracy reference nodes and further calibrate the bad nodes through reverse-localization. To overcome the error propagation, we assign different weights to the range measurement according to the ranging quality. We implemented our localization scheme in GreenOrbs testbed, and evaluate through extensive experiments. The results demonstrate that EARL outperforms the current localization approaches with better accuracy. The localization accuracy achieved by our method is around 20% higher than best existing methods.

Abstract:A wireless sensor network (WSN) is a self-organized wireless network that consists of a number of sensor nodes. The deployment of a number of sensor nodes enables people to monitor and interact with the physical world. Forest is one of those environments where WSNs are applied. Under the circumstances of global climate changes and environmental pollution, WSNs for forestry applications attract increasing attention in recent years. This dissertation research focuses on developing techniques that make the sensor network systems more applicable and efficient for practical forestry applications. I have been working on GreenOrbs, a long-term large-scale WSN system deployed in the forest. In order to overcome the uncertainty emerging from the forestry deployments, I address several key issues, including error-resilient localization for networked sensor nodes against irregular wireless signals, forwarding-quality-aware data collection against unstable link and node behavior, and quantitative canopy closure estimates against error-prone sensor readings. I develop theoretical principles, design practical protocols, and implement my ideas with GreenOrbs. I evaluate those approaches through real-world large-scale experiments and trace-driven simulations. The results validate their effectiveness and efficiency in overcoming the uncertainty. The proposed approaches can be further applied to other fields.

Abstract:Motivated by the needs of precise forest inventory and real-time surveillance for ecosystem management, in this paper we present GreenOrbs [2], a wireless sensor network system and its application for canopy closure estimates. Both the hardware and software designs of GreenOrbs are tailored for sensing in wild environments without human supervision, including a firm weatherproof enclosure of sensor motes and a light-weight mechanism for node state monitoring and data collection. By incorporating a pre-deployment training process as well as a distributed calibration method, the estimates of canopy closure stay accurate and consistent against uncertain sensory data and dynamic environments. We have implemented a prototype system of GreenOrbs and carried out multiple rounds of deployments. The evaluation results demonstrate that GreenOrbs outperforms the conventional approaches for canopy closure estimates. Some early experiences are reported in this paper.

Abstract:Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are developed in an accelerated pace during the past years. Motivated by the need of closely monitoring the forest and urban environments and accurately measuring carbon sequestration and emission, we launched two long-term large-scale WSNs: "GreenOrbs" in 2009 and "CitySee" in 2011, respectively. This paper presents our recent advances and experience on how to implement the two WSNs with stable and high performance. Some research directions are also discussed based on our observations and measurements.

Abstract:A Large-scale Wireless Sensor Network (LWSN). such as an environment monitoring system deployed in a city, could yield data on the order of petabytes each year. Storage and computation of such vast quantities of data pose difficult challenges to the LWSN, particularly because sensors are highly constrained by their scarce resources. Distributed storage and parallel processing are solutions that deal with the massive amount of data by utilizing the collective computational power of the large number of sensors, all while keeping inter-node communication minimized to save energy. In this chapter, we conduct a survey on the state-of-the-art of distributed storage and parallel processing in LWSNs. We will focus on the LWSN scenario in which vast amounts of data are collected prior to intensive computation on that data. We argue that current research results in this direction fall into three categories: 1) hierarchical system architecture to support parallel and distributed computation; 2) distributed data aggregation and storage strategies; 3) parallel processing, scheduling and programming methods. We highlight some important results for each of these categories and discuss existing problems and future directions.

Abstract:Microclimates in many wildland cultural heritage sites are not under surveillance up to now, due to the lack of power supply and network access. However, accurate microclimate data in cultural heritage sites are very important for research and conservation. In this paper, we present a wireless sensor system for long-term microclimate monitoring in wildland cultural heritage sites, and its deployment at the Mogao Grottoes. The system integrates wireless sensor network (WSN), long-distance wireless polling network (LWPN) and Internet to fit the complex geography of the Mogao Grottoes. Both robust hardware and fault tolerance strategies have been developed to ensure long-term stable monitoring. The currently deployed system consists of 241 data sensors covering 57 typical caves. The reliability and long life-time of the system are verified through network and battery performance evaluations at the end of the paper.

Abstract:Due to its large scale and constrained communication radius, a wireless sensor network mostly relies on multi-hop transmissions to deliver a data packet along a sequence of nodes. It is of essential importance to measure the forwarding quality of multi-hop paths and such information shall be utilized in designing efficient routing strategies. Existing metrics like ETX, ETF mainly focus on quantifying the link performance in between the nodes while overlooking the forwarding capabilities inside the sensor nodes. The experience on manipulating GreenOrbs, a large-scale sensor network with 330 nodes, reveals that the quality of forwarding inside each sensor node is at the least an equally important factor that contributes to the path quality in data delivery. In this paper we propose QoF, Quality of Forwarding, a new metric which explores the performance in the gray zone inside a node left unattended in previous studies. By combining the QoF measurements within a node and over a link, we are able to comprehensively measure the intact path quality in designing efficient multi-hop routing protocols. We implement QoF and build a modified Collection Tree Protocol (CTP). We evaluate the data collection performance in a testbed consisting of 50 TelosB nodes, and compare it with the original CTP protocol. The experimental results show that our approach takes both transmission cost and forwarding reliability into consideration, thus achieving a high throughput for data collection.

Abstract:A joint effort between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the BLOSSOMS sensor network project aims to identify research issues at all levels from practical applications down to the design of sensor nodes. In this project, a heterogeneous sensor array including different types of application-dependent sensors as well as monitoring sensors and intruding sensors are being developed. Application-dependent power-aware communication protocols are also being studied for communications among sensor nodes. An ontology-based middleware is built to relieve the burden of application developers from collecting, classifying and processing messy sensing contexts. This project will also develop a set of tools allowing researchers to model, simulate/emulate, analyze, and monitor various functions of sensor networks.

Abstract:Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is increasingly popular in the field of micro-environmental monitoring due to its promising capability. However, most systems using WSN for environmental monitoring reported in the literature are developed for specific applications without functions for exploiting user’s data processing methods. In this paper, a new system is designed in detail to perform micro-environmental monitoring taking the advantages of the WSN. The application-oriented hardware working style is designed, and the system platform for data acquisition, validation, processing and visualization is systematically presented. Several strategies are proposed to guarantee the system capability in terms of extracting useful information, visualizing events to their authentic time are also described. Moreover, a web-based surveillance subsystem is presented for remote control and monitoring. In addition, the system is extensible for engineers to carry their own data analysis algorithms. Experimental results are to show the path reliability and real-time characteristics, and to display the feasibility and applicability of the developed system into practical deployment.

Abstract:A networking system made of low‐cost, maintenance‐free, and distributed self‐powered wireless monitoring nodes is proposed, aiming at establishing a sensing system for long‐term and wide‐area environment monitoring. As driven by gentle wind, these nodes are able to monitor temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure automatically, and then transfer the sensing data to a receiver wirelessly using triboelectric nanogenerators as energy harvesting technologies. Environmental monitoring of local climatic variations plays a vital role in the research on global warming, species diversity, ecological sustainability, and so on. Traditional monitoring technologies, such as meteorological stations or satellite imagery, can give an overall environment picture but at high cost, high energy consumption, and with insufficient regional details. Here, a networking system made of low‐cost, maintenance‐free, and distributed self‐powered wireless monitoring nodes is proposed, aimed at establishing a sensing system for long‐term and wide‐area environment monitoring. It is demonstrated that, as driven by gentle wind, these distributed nodes are able to monitor temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure automatically, and then transfer the sensing data to receiving terminals wirelessly using triboelectric nanogenerators as energy harvesting technologies. The longest transmitting distance is 2.1 km. Additionally, a sensing network is formed. By utilizing several nodes, a 2‐km2 region is covered, and the information can be transmitted live using a relay‐technology. Furthermore, the node is demonstrated to work for weeks, and continuously send back environmental data. Since the nodes are portable and the embedded sensors are customizable, it is anticipated that the system can be multifunctional and applied in many natural areas, such as forests, prairies, mountains, lake regions, and so on.

Abstract:Nowadays, the advanced sensor technology with cloud computing and big data is generating large-scale heterogeneous and real-time IOT (Internet of Things) data. To make full use of the data, development and deploy of ubiquitous IOT-based applications in various aspects of our daily life are quite urgent. However, the characteristics of IOT sensor data, including heterogeneity, variety, volume, and real time, bring many challenges to effectively process the sensor data. The Semantic Web technologies are viewed as a key for the development of IOT. While most of the existing efforts are mainly focused on the modeling, annotation, and representation of IOT data, there has been little work focusing on the background processing of large-scale streaming IOT data. In the paper, we present a large-scale real-time semantic processing framework and implement an elastic distributed streaming engine for IOT applications. The proposed engine efficiently captures and models different scenarios for all kinds of IOT applications based on popular distributed computing platform SPARK. Based on the engine, a typical use case on home environment monitoring is given to illustrate the efficiency of our engine. The results show that our system can scale for large number of sensor streams with different types of IOT applications.

Abstract:Optical remote sensing allows to efficiently monitor forest ecosystems at regional and global scales. However, most of the widely used optical forward models and backward estimation methods are only suitable for forest canopies in flat areas. To evaluate the recent progress in forest remote sensing over complex terrain, a satellite-airborne-ground synchronous Fine scale Optical Remote sensing Experiment of mixed Stand over complex Terrain (FOREST) was conducted over a 1 km×1 km key experiment area (KEA) located in the Genhe Reserve Areain 2016. Twenty 30 m×30 m elementary sampling units (ESUs) were established to represent the spatiotemporal variations of the KEA. Structural and spectral parameters were simultaneously measured for each ESU. As a case study, we first built two 3D scenes of the KEA with individual-tree and voxel-based approaches, and then simulated the canopy reflectance using the LargE-Scale remote sensing data and image Simulation framework over heterogeneous 3D scenes (LESS). The correlation coefficient between the LESS-simulated reflectance and the airborne-measured reflectance reaches 0.68–0.73 in the red band and 0.56–0.59 in the near-infrared band, indicating a good quality of the experiment dataset. More validation studies of the related forward models and retrieval methods will be done.
