Abstract:Before deciding to buy a product or select a service, many people tend to consult others' opinions. Web provides a perfect platform on which one can get much information to master the advantages and disadvantages of the product of his interest. How to manage the numerous web documents automatically and give suggestions to the potential customers is becoming a research hotpot recently. For a specific domain, the sentiment resource can be regarded as a lexicon, which contains a list of product feature words and opinion expressions pair with polarity tag. To construct such a sentiment resource, this paper proposes an automatic algorithm to extract opinion expressions and determine its polarity to existing feature words. Both NLP technique and statistical information are taken into consideration in opinion expression extraction step, while lexicon based method and context based method are taken in polarity determination step of the algorithm. Experiment results show the effectiveness of the proposed automatic sentiment resource construction approach. © 2011 by Binary Information Press.

Abstract:This paper mainly describes how to determine the polarity of sentiment words in a Chinese sentence for opinion mining. We consider the computation of not only the prior polarity for sentiment words, but also the modified polarity for sentiment words. Therefore, we improve the performance of the polarity distinction for sentimental descriptive terms. The experimental results have shown that the proposed approach is reasonable and effective.

Abstract:The detection of expressions of sentiment in online text has become a popular Natural Language Processing application. The task is commonly defined as identifying the words or phrases in a given fragment of text in which the reader understands that the author expresses some person's positive, negative, or perhaps neutral attitude toward a topic. These four elements-expression words, attitude holder, topic, and attitude value-have evolved with hardly any discussion in the literature about their foundation or nature. Specifically, the use of two (or three) attitude values is far more simplistic than many examples of real language show. In this paper we ask: where do sentiments come from? We focus on two basic sources of human attitude-the holder's non-logical/emotional preferences and the fulfillment of the holder's goals. After exploring each source we provide a notional algorithm sketch and examples of how sentiment systems could provide richer and more realistic accounts of sentiment in text.

Abstract:With the thriving of microblog, a huge amount of people get involved in online life. This leads the government to intensify supervision on online remarks, and opinion polarity is what they care most. But microblog opinions contain several specialties from hotel remarks; they are format-free, short, and most express only one polarity. In this paper, we target on finding an appropriate polarity recognition method for public opinion supervision system. In our method, we explore new feature extraction rules which extract phizs, emotional nouns, verbs, adjectives, and bigrams as representative features. Then, we apply SVM to classify these online opinions into positive and negative class. Based on the crawled real-world datasets, our method can respectively achieve an accuracy of 80.1% and 87.4% for microblog reviews and traditional hotel remarks, so the proposed method is appropriate and effective for public opinion supervision system.

Abstract:New words and new senses are produced quickly and are used widely in micro blogs, so to automatically extract new words and predict their semantic orientations is vital to sentiment analysis in micro blogs. This paper proposes Extractor and PolarityAssigner to tackle this task in an unsupervised manner. Extractor is a pattern-based method which extracts sentiment-bearing words from large-scale raw micro blog corpus, where the main task is to eliminate the huge ambiguities in the un-segmented raw texts. PolarityAssigner predicts the semantic orientations of words by exploiting emoticons and latent polarities, using a LDA model which treats each sentiment-bearing word as a document and each co-occurring emoticon as a word in that document. The experimental results are promising: many new sentiment-bearing words are extracted and are given proper semantic orientations with a relatively high precision, and the automatically extracted sentiment lexicon improves the performance of sentiment analysis on an open opinion mining task in micro blog corpus.

Abstract:Word semantic polarity computing is the basic work of text sentiment analysis. This paper proposes a new method to analyze word semantic polarity based on a Chinese thesaurus.(Tongyici Cilin). Based on Chinese synonym groups, this method uses seed words to extend the polarity word set. The experiments show the validity of the proposed method for both - word polarity computing and document polarity computing.

Abstract:Sentiment analysis plays an important role in many applications. This paper introduces our ongoing work related to the sentiment analysis on Chinese conversation. The main purpose is to construct a Chinese conversation corpus for sentiment analysis and provide a benchmark result on this corpus. To explore the effectiveness of machine learning based approaches for sentiment analysis on Chinese conversation, we firstly collected conversational data from some online English learning websites and our instant messages, and manually annotated it with three sentiment polarities and 22 fine-grained emotion classes. Then we applied multiple representative classification methods to evaluate the corpus. The evaluation results provide good suggestions for the future research. And we will release the corpus with gold standards publicly for research purposes.

Abstract:By using natural language management technology, Chinese Web review sentences were semantic studied and opinion mined. A new algorithm for computing the contextual polarity of polar words was proposed, and a framework was introduced for topic identification and feature extraction. The framework provided an innovative solution for the association of extracted opinion to its specific topic. The experiment results show that the algorithm is both reasonable and effective compared with the results of manual annotation.

Abstract:Nowadays, mining opinions or sentiment from online user-generated text has become a research hot spot. Although a large amount of lexicon-based Chinese polarity detection works have been done, the existing methods have one common flaw: that even the same word can have opposite polarities among different seed lexicons. This is known as polarity fuzziness. To enhance the performance of Chinese sentiment polarity detection, we start from a two-aspect lexicon expansion so that the polarity fuzziness can be avoided. Specifically, we detect sentiment polarity for new words and revise sentiment polarity for words already defined in seed lexicons. Then, we formulate a novel sentiment polarity detection framework for Chinese (SPDFC) with more attention to fine-grained sentiment processing, which is involved in symmetrical mapping, sentiment feature pruning and text representation. In this way, words' polarity can be directly taken as features, penetrating further in the polarity detection phase. According to our experimental results, the proposed SPDFC framework can achieve the best overall performance from the perspective of Chinese polarity detection, sentiment feature pruning, and text representation compared to other classical and state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:Sentiment analysis has become significantly important with the increasing demand of Natural Language Processing (NLP). A novel Chinese Sentiment Words Polarity (CSWP) analyzing method, which is based on sentiment morpheme matching method and word embedding method, is proposed in this paper. In the CSWP, the sentiment morpheme matching method is creatively combined with existing word embedding method, it not only successfully retained the advantages of flexibility and timeliness of the unsupervised methods, but also improved the performance of the original word embedding method. Firstly, the CSWP uses word embedding method to calculate the polarity score for candidate sentiment words, then the sentiment morpheme matching method is applied to make further analysis for the polarity of words. Finally, to deal with the low recognition ratio in the sentiment morpheme matching method, a synonym expanding step is added into the morpheme matching method, which can significantly improve the recognition ratio of the sentiment morpheme matching method. The performance of CSWP is evaluated through extensive experiments on 20000 users' comments. Experimental results show that the proposed CSWP method has achieved a desirable performance when compared with other two baseline methods.

Abstract:With the spurt of online user-generated contents on web, sentiment analysis has become a very active research issue in data mining and natural language processing. As the most important indicator of sentiment, sentiment words which convey positive and negative polarity are quite instrumental for sentiment analysis. However, most of the existing methods for identifying polarity of sentiment words only consider the positive and negative polarity by the Cantor set, and no attention is paid to the fuzziness of the polarity intensity of sentiment words. In order to improve the performance, we propose a fuzzy computing model to identify the polarity of Chinese sentiment words in this paper. There are three major contributions in this paper. Firstly, we propose a method to compute polarity intensity of sentiment morphemes and sentiment words. Secondly, we construct a fuzzy sentiment classifier and propose two different methods to compute the parameter of the fuzzy classifier. Thirdly, we conduct extensive experiments on four sentiment words datasets and three review datasets, and the experimental results indicate that our model performs better than the state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:The exploding Web opinion data has the essential need for automatic tools to analyze people’s sentiments in many fields. Predicting the polarity of a product review is an important work in applications such as market investigation and trend analysis. In this paper, we focus on analyzing the Chinese sentiment word strengths and the sentiment drop point. We propose a novel algorithm based on the sentiment drop point algorithm to conduct sentiment polarity assignment. It predicts the sentiment polarity by a determinative policy which involves two classifiers simultaneously. The experiments show that our approach is efficient and suited for reviews analysis in different domains.

Abstract:Writing comments on products or news has become a popular activity in social media. The amount of opinionated text available online has been growing rapidly, increasing the need for techniques that can analyze opinions expressed in such text so that reviews can be easily absorbed by users. To date, most techniques depend on annotated corpora. However, existing corpora are almost sentence-level works that ignore important global sentiment information in other sentences. Given the rise of advanced applications, more fine-grained corpora are needed, even at the sentence level. The authors aim to create a fine-grained corpus for Chinese sentiment analysis, and more importantly, explore new sentiment analysis tasks by analyzing the annotated corpus. The proposed fine-grained annotation scheme not only introduces cross-sentence and global sentiment information (such as "target entity"') but also includes new sentence-level elements (such as "implicit aspect"). Based on this scheme, this corpus can provide a more fine-grained platform for researchers to study algorithms for advanced applications. In addition, an in-depth analysis on the annotated corpus is made and several important but ignored tasks, such as the target-aspect pair extraction task, are explored, which can give useful hints about future directions.

Abstract:The polarity analysis on objective text is currently a difficult study in the area of natural language processing. Compared with different characters between stock analysts and general network chapters,this paper combines the text structure-based methods of polarity analysis and the model-based methods of polarity analysis,and constructs a combined method of polarity analysis of stock analysts.Results show that the combined method of polarity analysis of stock analysts can improve recall and precision in the consolidated level,respectively reach 90.2%,84.8%.

Abstract:Internet has become an excellent source for gathering consumer reviews, while opinion of consumer reviews expressed in sentiment words. However, due to the fuzziness of Chinese word itself, the sentiment judgments of people are more subjective. Studies have shown that the polarities and strengths judgment of sentiment words obey Gaussian distribution. In this paper, we propose a novel method of polarity computation of Chinese sentiment words based on Gaussian distribution which can analyze an analysis of semantic fuzziness of Chinese sentiment words quantitatively. Furthermore, several equations are proposed to calculate the polarities and strengths of sentiment words. Experimental results show that our method is highly effective.
Polarity Classification of Celebrity Coverage in the Chinese Press

Abstract:The importance of media opinion on strategic subjects has long been recognized, and increasingly so for the foreign press. Recent interests in the automatic classification of summative views have focused on nglish (Wilson and Wiebe, 2003; Wilson et al., 2003) and have yielded fruitful results (Wiebe and Riloff, 2005). Interests in classifying polarity in the Chinese Press is only beginning (Yuen et al,. 2004). This paper reports on linguistic issues relevant to polarity in Chinese texts and an experimental annotation scheme, the derivation of polarity indices from annotated textual attributes, as well as results obtained from a comparison of manual and automatic classification efforts. Manual classification was performed by 4 trained scorers who used a scale of -5 to 5 to indicate the extent of positive or negative polarity of each news article. There were 600 articles mainly on U.S. and Taiwan presidential elections in 2004. Normalized results on the polarity of the news articles regarding 4 well-known political figures (i.e., John Kerry, George W Bush, Junichiro Koizumi and Chen Shui-bian) show wide variations in the different Chinese communities, represented by Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Taipei. A system to automatically score the polarity of the sample news articles is introduced, which incorporates initially a set of pre-selected polar lexical items along the lines of Yuen et al. (2004). The Spread, Density and Intensity of polar lexical items are explored. Spread indicates the extent to which the polar lexical items spread over an article in terms of paragraphs or sentences. Density means how extensive polar lexical items are found in the polar paragraphs. Intensity refers to the strength of the polarity of the lexical items. The possible contributions by Spread and Density to improve correlation with manual classification are explored in this paper.

Abstract:This paper presents the design and construction of a large-scale target-based sentiment annotation corpus on Chinese financial news text. Different from the most existing paragraph/document-based annotation corpus, in this study, target-based fine-grained sentiment annotation is performed. The companies, brands and other financial entities are regarded as the targets. The clause reflecting the profitability, loss or other business status of financial entities is regarded as the sentiment expression for determining the polarity. Based on high quality annotation guideline and effective quality control strategy, a corpus with 8,314 target-level sentiment annotation is constructed on 6,336 paragraphs from Chinese financial news text. Based on this corpus, several state-of-the-art sentiment analysis models are evaluated.

Abstract:Sentiment analysis aims to uncover emotions conveyed through information. In its simplest form, it is performed on a polarity basis, where the goal is to classify information with positive or negative emotion. Recent research has explored more nuanced ways to capture emotions that go beyond polarity. For these methods to work, they require a critical resource: a lexicon that is appropriate for the task at hand, in terms of the range of emotions it captures diversity. In the past, sentiment analysis lexicons have been created by experts, such as linguists and behavioural scientists, with strict rules. Lexicon evaluation was also performed by experts or gold standards. In our paper, we propose a crowdsourcing method for lexicon acquisition, which is scalable, cost-effective, and doesn't require experts or gold standards. We also compare crowd and expert evaluations of the lexicon, to assess the overall lexicon quality, and the evaluation capabilities of the crowd.

Abstract:This paper address the problem of identifying the sentiment polarity in financial news articles about a public company having potential effect on the future price of the company's stock. The problem is challenging due to the lack of reliable labeled training data and effective classification method. A feasible corpus building strategy is proposed and stock reviews are used for training, since the news polarity prediction is similar to the process of stock analyst drawing their conclusion by weighting the major event pros and cons of the company. The reviews can be annotated automatically by the grade given by the analyst. In addition, the consequent experiments also confirm it. Furthermore, we examine the effectiveness of using language modeling approaches to solve the sentiment classification of Chinese financial news articles. Two different approaches based on language model are employed and their comparisons with SVM and Naive Bayes are also performed in our research. The experiment results justify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed language model approaches, which perform better than the approaches based on traditional machine learning techniques.
Collocation Polarity Disambiguation Using Web-based Pseudo Contexts.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the task of collocation polarity disambiguation. The collocation refers to a binary tuple of a polarity word and a target (such as or ), in which the sentiment orientation of the polarity word ("long") changes along with different targets ("battery life" or "startup"). To disambiguate a collocation's polarity, previous work always turned to investigate the polarities of its surrounding contexts, and then assigned the majority polarity to the collocation. However, these contexts are limited, thus the resulting polarity is insufficient to be reliable. We therefore propose an unsupervised three-component framework to expand some pseudo contexts from web, to help disambiguate a collocation's polarity. Without using any additional labeled data, experiments show that our method is effective.
