Abstract:Essential oils and their active antimicrobial components are promising in controlling the biodeterioration of outdoor stone cultural heritage, but their high volatility, hydrophobicity, and sensitivity to light, heat, and oxygen limit their practical application. To overcome the limitations of essential oils in the conservation of outdoor stone cultural heritage, we developed a sustained release system based on halloysite nanotubes. Firstly, we acid-etched the halloysite nanotubes by 4 M HCl to increase their specific surface area and pore volume, which thereby enhanced the loading capacity of halloysite nanotubes. Then, as a model active ingredient (AI), cinnamaldehyde was loaded into acid-etched halloysite nanotubes by vacuum method. A series of experiments revealed that the cinnamaldehyde loaded into acid-etched halloysite nanotubes not only improved their thermal stability but also could be slowly released into the deionized water, following Fickian diffusion. Finally, the cinnamaldehyde-loaded halloysite nanotubes were used in field experiments on Feilaifeng limestone. After a year of monitoring, the number of microorganisms on the limestone surface was greatly reduced after the treatment of cinnamaldehyde-loaded halloysite nanotubes. The cinnamaldehyde-loaded halloysite nanotubes showed great potential in controlling the biodeterioration of outdoor stone cultural heritage.

Abstract:The complex preservation conditions make underwater cultural relics, especially organic ones-more frag-ile than terrestrial relics. Bamboo slips, the main carriers of ancient Chinese characters, are often found underwater. They have high cultural and historical values, but their mechanical strength is low, making them difficult to extract. Moreover, if their arrangement is disrupted during the extraction process, the subsequent restoration will be harder. In this study, veratraldehyde, a new underwater temporary solid material, was used to conduct in-situ reinforcement and extraction experiments on organic cultural relics. Based on these experiments, the researchers designed a three-layer wrapped protective frame and pro-posed the recovery method of dissolution and effective residue detection of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The experimental results showed that this method can nearly preserve the original state of frag-ile bamboo slips underwater and extract them out of the water safely. Also, the solidification process is reversible and without residues. It is a safe and reliable underwater technology for solidifying extraction of cultural relics. (c) 2021 Elsevier Masson SAS. Abstract:To extend the lifetime of wall-paintings in the Mogao Grottoes, various kinds of conservation materials (for example, PVA, acrylic acid and B72) and techniques (for example, adhesion, consolidation and surface coating) have been used in the past decades. However, as a basic concern, it still remains obscured how the deterioration mechanism of wall-paintings changes after conservation materials are applied. In this contribution, an assumption was advanced to clarify this mechanism. Different layers in the wall-paintings have different physical properties, such as thermal and moisture expansions, which may be altered after the conservation materials penetrate into the paintings. The differences of these properties may cause stress between the layers in the paintings with the change of environmental factors, which will finally lead to deterioration of wall-paintings. A series of experiments were performed to determine thermal and moisture expansion properties of consolidated wall-painting plasters. The impact of the conservation materials on the expansion properties of wall-painting plasters was quantified, in order to evaluate these materials. Consistency of experimental conclusions and conservation experience validated this hypothetical mechanism.
Biocides for the Control of Mosses on Stone Cultural Relics

Abstract:Controlling biodeterioration is a worldwide necessity for the preservation of cultural heritage. Biocides are the most effective compounds used for heritage protection of stone; however, their specific efficacy, performance over time, interference with cultural heritage materials, and potential hazards are still unclear. In this work, we test and evaluate a large number of biocides to address the degradation of stone cultural relics by mosses. The quantitative and qualitative evaluations of biocide efficiency were performed by chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlaF) measurements and confocal microscopy. Surprisingly, traditional herbicides (glyphosate, glufosinate-ammonium) and metal oxide nanoparticles (CuO, ZnO) with antibacterial effects do not affect mosses. However, some plant hormones and essential oils showed good effects at all stages of moss growth. Meanwhile, biocides were also tested on artificial simulated rocks to see if they change their properties. It turns out that biocides containing copper ions can cause chromaticity changes on the rock surfaces. In the end, a total of six efficient and safe biocides were obtained, which will play a good role in biological control for cultural heritage protection.
Phosphonium-based Ionic Liquids As Antifungal Agents for Conservation of Heritage Sandstone

Abstract:With a view to preventing fungal deterioration of historical stone artworks, we report the use of phosphonium-based ionic liquids (ILs) as potent antifungal agents against dematiaceous fungi commonly found on heritage stones. Three ILs: tributyldodecylphosphonium polyoxometalate [P44412][POM], tributyltetradecylphosphonium polyoxometalate [P44414][POM], and trihexyltetradecylphosphonium polyoxometalate [P66614][POM] were prepared and their thermal stabilities and in vitro antifungal activities were evaluated. From the ramped temperature thermogravimetric analysis and antifungal experiments it can be clearly observed that the alkyl chain length of the tetraalkylphosponium cation has a significant influence on the thermal and antifungal properties. The thermal stability and antifungal activity decreased as the number of carbon atoms of the alkyl substituents increased and, thus, followed the order [P44412][POM] > [P44414][POM] > [P66614][POM]. In addition, inoculation of four fungal species on IL-coated sandstone surfaces showed significant inhibition of fungal growth, endowing the materials with potential applications in heritage sandstone conservation.

Abstract:In this work, a new hydrogel designed for water-sensitive artifacts especially for China Dunhuang mural was synthesized to remove the ineffective conservation materials on mural surface. The reversible rate of each conservation material was measured based on hydrogel cleaning. It was found that the gel filled with cleaning agents showed excellent performance over the empty gel. Besides, it was more environment-friendly without mechanical damage to the sensitive surface and easier to control the cleaning process compared with pure organic solvent cleaning. 3D microscopic system confirmed the cleaning effects both visually and quantitatively. The best “conservation material-cleaning agent” pairs and their reversible rates were obtained, which were “ParaloidB72---P-xylene+ethyl acetate---80%”, “polyvinyl acetate---P-xylene+ethyl acetate---40%”, “acrylic---P-xylene---44%”, “silicone---P-xylene+1-Pentanol---55%”. It was also found that the reversible rates of the conservation materials declined after aging.
The Protective Effect Of Grease Stains Caused By Hands Touching Stone Relics

Abstract:Many exposed surfaces of stone relics were covered by grease stains by tourists' touching or leaning. The grease stains have changed the appearance of stone relics seriously, so they are always supposed to be removed. However, the stones coated with grease always keep a better look than bare ones. In this work, a series of experiments were designed to explore whether grease can protect the stones. The results of SO2 corrosion experiment showed that SO2 had a corrosion effect on sandstones in the presence of water. Whereas the samples coated with grease almost remained unchanged after the corrosion test. From the salt destruction test, it was observed that grease stone samples were also less destroyed than blank ones. It means that grease stain can prevent the attack of SO2 corrosion and salt destruction, which are the major factors of damage in Yungang Grottoes, China.

Abstract:Relics are precious, but the use of improper restoration materials may intensify their deterioration and result in preservation damage. Five restoration materials, including polyvinyl acetate (PVAc), polyacrylic acid (PAA), silicone-modified acrylic (SMPA), gelatin, and Paroloid B72, were used to restore simulated samples of the Dunhuang grotto murals. Simulated samples were ranked by their durability in response to cyclic weathering experiments. Experimental results revealed two mechanisms in sample deterioration processes. First, preservation materials affect salt migration, which have caused considerable damage to relics. It is found that more hydrophilicity synthetic polymers showed better performance. Second, interlayer expansion discrepancies may cause diseases such as flaking, and for this reason, gelatin should not be applied to plaster layers.
Capillary rise induced salt deterioration on ancient wall paintings at the Mogao Grottoes

Abstract:Salt deterioration has been found to be a major threat to wall paintings at culture heritage sites in arid areas along the Silk Road. However, the routes of water migration that cause the efflorescence have not been identified, and consequently, effective preservation measures have not been developed. Our microanalysis, by interrogating 93,727 individual particles collected in a Mogao cave in Dunhuang, China, revealed that capillary rise of water in the earthen plasters drives the deterioration of wall paintings. The vertical distribution of chloride and sulfate particles in the salt efflorescence and their morphologies implied a migration of salts through capillary rise and subsequent crystal growth under environmental conditions exerts sufficient pressure to cause surface decay and loss. These results indicate that blocking the water capillary rise under the porous structures is likely the most effective route to prevent rapid deterioration of the ancient wall paintings. These salt transport and deterioration mechanisms in an arid environment, suggests that a wide range of management strategies and protective measures could be developed to effectively preserve heritage sites in arid regions, especially along the Silk Road.

Abstract:Natural collagen-based cultural relics such as parchment and leather are susceptible to the storage environment, including temperature, relative humidity, pollutants, and microorganisms, resulting in the deterioration of the main components of collagen, keratin, tannins, lipids, oils and tanning regents. Significant changes might occur in the appearance, composition and internal structure, accompanied by the impaired physical properties such as thermal stability, flexibility, and tensile strength. Biodeterioration is one of the main factors affecting the long-term storage of parchment and leather artifacts, particularly in environments with high relative humidity, due to the proliferation and growth of bacteria or fungi. This review focuses on the common microbial communities on the parchment and leather artifacts. The biodeterioration mechanism is discussed, which will shed light onto the future research of collagen-based cultural relics.

Variables That Contribute to Tabia's High Mechanical Strength — A Study Using Traditional Residential Flooring Tabia from Zhejiang, China

Abstract:Tabia has a long history of application in China, particularly as traditional residential flooring. In this work, we analyzed traditional residential flooring tabia samples from six residential flats in Zhejiang Province, China, to determine its composition and physical properties. We performed surface Leeb hardness test, compressive strength test, specific density and total porosity test, component composition test, sand and clay grain size distribution test, organic additives test, SEM, and XRD tests, capillary water absorption rate test, freeze-thaw damage test for the tabia samples. Results showed that these residential flooring tabia samples exhibit high compressive strength that can reach as high as 10 MPa. Furthermore, additional analysis determined that the high compressive strength is a function of the following criteria: 1) high density; 2) suitable mass ratio of sand, lime, and clay; 3) the appropriate sand particle size ratio; and 4) formation of hydrated calcium silicate (C-S-H). Moreover, sticky rice and egg white were also detected in the residential flooring tabia samples. The tabia's water absorption coefficient rate decreases with their density. The freeze-thaw resistance of tabia is related to many factors such as calcite content, density and porosity, microstructure. The data obtained from this study will provide guidance for conservators in the protection and restoration of tabia relics.
A more accurate definition of water characteristics in stone materials for an improved understanding and effective protection of cultural heritage from biodeterioration

Abstract:The water associated with cultural heritage materials is the most important factor before initiation microbial colonization and subsequent biodeterioration processes to occur. Since moisture or water in such materials is the key to life, a more refined characterization of water is needed to advance the basic understanding of the fundamental mechanisms, especially for the accurate assessment of bio-susceptibility or bio-receptibility of different materials. Water can be categorized to free, gravitational, capillary, and hygroscopic to account for the physical states and sorption strength with the materials. Material porosity or water-holding capacity are fundamental criteria used in characterization of various types of materials on a common ground and basis, but pore connectivity has been largely ignored and must be addressed to establish the methods for assessment and also its relationship to bio-colonization and biodeterioration. When a threshold value of water in the relevant physical categories is available, microbial life can colonize and establish colonies as biofilms on materials surfaces to carry out the biochemical reactions leading to biodeterioration, from appearance of discoloration to physical damage of the materials. Microbial destruction of inorganic materials is mainly carried out by the biochemical reactions through carbon, nitrogen and sulfur cycles. Among material porosity characteristics, available water and microorganisms, mobility and movement of soluble salts under wet and dry cycles have significant impact on the durability of materials. Uptake of soluble salts and supersaturated salts in water into materials can result in crystallization and mineral formation under evaporation condition to initiate the internal stress and cracks, which eventually result in surface delamination and damage. From an architecture design point of view, it is clear that management of water is a basic and important strategy to prevent development of microbial issues in the long-term protection of cultural heritage.

The Synergic Impacts of Salt Mixture and Frost Damage on Rock Decay: Implications for the Deterioration of Rock-Hewn Heritages

Abstract:Soluble salt and freeze-thaw are two significant weathering factors inducing deterioration in rock-hewn heritages. While much research has focused on the influences of salt weathering and freeze-thaw separately, a realistic scenario reveals that the two processes often coincide in nature, making rock's decay process more complex and faster. We investigate how the synergic impact of salt weathering and freeze-thaw affect the severity of deterioration on rock-hewn heritage using materials and climatic conditions informed by rock-hewn heritage sites in SE China. The experiment was carried out on five types of stones sampled from the area of or close to the World Heritage Site, the West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou (WLCL), China. Samples were subject to 25 ageing cycles that comprised three phases: salt impregnation phase in 20℃/3hrs + freezing phase in -10℃/15hrs + evaporation phase in 50℃/6hrs). The mixture of Na 2 SO 4 -MgSO 4 was utilised as the contamination substance based on the salt content determination of the stone heritage in the WLCL. Deterioration patterns, dimensional changes, pore structure and physic-mechanical properties, including surface hardness and splitting tensile strength, were determined. Results showed that the significant porous stone (porosity > 5%) with a higher proportion of micropores, e.g. flint, was more susceptible to the salt mixture, demonstrating pronounced surface detachment, deformation and strength decline. Dolomitic-rich carbonate stone with low porosity also shows deterioration, though their dimensional expansion and decline in mechanical properties are relatively minor. Most rock specimens' pore size distribution shifts to a higher magnitude, causing an enlargement in their average pore radius and an increase in mesopores. The relatively compact dolomitic limestone specimens developed new pores with a mean pore diameter of 6.5nm. This suggests that combining the two weathering factors would damage the appearance and nature of rock-hewn heritage by reshaping pore structure, weakening the cohesion between grains and consequently damaging the rock's initial fabric and strength.
Application of Veratraldehyde As a Temporary Consolidant for Relics at Underwater Cultural Heritage Sites

Abstract:Because it is often difficult to preserve fragile relics in situ at underwater cultural heritage sites, it is sometimes necessary for relics to be extracted and moved to a controlled environment on land for protection and study. This paper discusses the feasibility of using the volatile organic compound veratraldehyde as a temporary consolidant for underwater fragile relics extraction. The results show that different materials (iron, tile, sand, wood) under water can be bonded together and extracted when using veratraldehyde. The fact that veratraldehyde is difficult to spread on the surface of underwater objects is a problem that can be solved by adding a layer of strong hydrophobic polypropylene (PP) fibres onto the object, serving as a 'package' for the relics. Under laboratory conditions, we used veratraldehyde and PP fibres to extract broken tiles from underwater sand onto an exhibition stand. The broken tiles, in both condition and distribution, were safely and completely retained as the veratraldehyde was slowly removed by the soaking process. This work fills a gap in knowledge about temporary consolidant materials in underwater archaeology, and provides a new method for extracting underwater fragile cultural relics without damaging them.
Desiccation Cracking of Earthen Sites in Archaeology Museum – A Viewpoint of Chemical Potential Difference of Water Content

Abstract:Unearthed relics and earthen sites are historical evidence of our cultural heritage. Many of them are referred to as immobile cultural relics since both the relics-in-itself and their surroundings are our historic heritage of past emperor’s burial with significant historical importance such that they cannot be moved into indoor-display museums. Researchers have studied the specific environmental specifications to establish the desired steady temperature, humidity and air quality for collections and visitors in indoor-display museums. However, due to the unique exhibition characteristics, the conservation of earthen sites is still a challenge to environmental scientists and technologists, and how to effectively protect these ancient sites has been a major concern globally. Archaeology museum is developing advanced techniques to prevent weathering of relics caused by the sun, wind and rain. The in-situ relics in archaeology museum are far from being well preserved because of the lack of understanding of site conservation and the impact of indoor micro-climatic conditions. Many of them are suffering deteriorations or even ruins due to improper preservation environment adopted for maintenance of relics. Among the hazards that unearthed relics are facing with, desiccation cracking is the most common and problematic. The drying layer of the earthen site in the Banpo museum (Xi’an, China) is thicker than 0.4m (see Figure 1(a)). The same phenomena are also found in the Emperor Qin’s Terra-Cotta Warriors and Horses Museum (see Figure 1(b)), the water content of the earthen site decreased from 15% to 22% in 1994 when it was excavated to less than 5% now, such that serous shrinkage and cracking occurred on the surface of the site. To upgrade the conservation of the relics in archaeology museums, great efforts have been made in recent years, e.g. maintenance of a high relative humidity (RH) and space division in the exhibiting hall have been implemented in archaeology museum as a part of the preservation regime. The underground exhibiting hall of Hanyangling Museum (Xi’an, China) is such a modern archaeology museum (see Figure 1(c)). It exhibits partially exposed pits containing pottery figurines in the co-burial grave of the fourth Emperor (188–141 B.C.) and Queen of Han Dynasty, China. The enclosed space for relics’ domain is being maintained at about 24 C in summer and 16 C in the winter. Moreover, the RH has been maintained at a level higher than 95% to prevent the drying of unearthed relics and sites. However, the water content of the earthen site in the exhibiting hall still decreased from over 15% when it was excavated in 2006 to around 4% in 2009. In addition to the desiccation cracking, gypsum was found to deposit on the surface of relics due to the transport mechanism by which the carbonates were diffused and migrated with moisture across the air-relic-topsoil complex interfaces. The carbonates would react with the penetrating SO2 from the ambient atmosphere to form sulphates (see Figure 1(d)). The reason why desiccation cracking occurs in high humidity environment is not entirely clear. The conservation protocol, i.e. space division and maintaining a high RH as a preservation regime, has been considered by archaeologists as an approved practice and therefore the protocol was applied to new archaeology museums; however, cracking still persists in the terracotta relics and earthen sites. The desiccation cracking of unearthed relics and excavated sites in these archaeology museums seems to be a spontaneous process even though the RH of the atmospheric environment was at approximately the ceiling value (100%). Abstract:Mold is an important deterioration risk to in situ preserved relics since they require a high relative humidity (RH) preservation environment to maintain their original state as before unearthed. However, few studies have been conducted to characterize mold growth on the surface of inorganic unearthed sites under saturated RH condi-tions. In this study, four groups of soil samples with different salt content were placed in different RH envi-ronments to assess mold growth under near-saturated conditions based on previously completed simulations of unearthed sites in an exhibition hall and an experimental platform for the environmental control system to preserve cultural relics. The very high RH (> 99%) of the near-saturated environment had a higher inhibitory effect on mold growth compared with the RH of 80-90%, which is favorable for mold growth. This inhibitory effect was not remarkably different from that of a dry environment. As salt content is proportional to mold growth on the surface of unearthed sites, a reduction in the former significantly inhibited the latter. This study provides basic knowledge about the characteristics of mold growth for unearthed sites in a near-saturated environment and proposes novel ideas for its prevention.
Three Birds with One Stone: Preventive Protection of Paper Materials by ZnO-PHMB and UV-531 Composite Systems

Abstract:As the most frequently used archival materials for painting and recording, paper lays the groundwork for the development of prosperous human civilization. However, its susceptibility to three primary factors including external ultraviolet light, increased acidity, and biological pathogens in long-term storage shortens the longevity of paper. Therefore, the protection of paper-based cultural relics is extremely urgent. Inspired by the three adverse factors affecting the protection of cultural relics, we herein propose to combine the ultraviolet absorber 2-hydroxy-4-(octyloxy)benzophenone (UV-531) and alkaline zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles innovatively into the antibacterial agent polyhexamethylene biguanidine hydrochloride (PHMB) to realize the strategy of three birds with one stone for relics protection. This study illustrates that the tensile strength and the folding endurance of different test papers are guaranteed by coating them with the composite reagents, and molds including Mucor, Trichoderma, and Aspergillus niger are effectually sterilized. In addition, a hand-painted Chinese ink-wash painting with beautiful flowers is chosen as the object for simulating cultural relics protection, and negligible color fading is observed in aging experiments. From the perspective of effectiveness, simplicity, and economy, this strategy sheds light on preservative protection of paper-based relics in long-term storage.

Abstract:Salt crystallization is a common type of disease in grottoes. Due to the change in temperature and humidity, the soluble salt originally existing in sandstone will have a negative impact on the protection of rock relics. In this study, sandstone samples containing Na 2 SO 4 solution and distilled water were used to study the difference in sample damage under the condition of temperature and humidity cycle changes. It was found that the damage degree of samples containing soluble salts was much higher than that of salt-free samples, especially under the influence of freeze-thaw cycles. With the increase of freeze-thaw cycles, the internal friction angle and wave velocity of sandstone decrease linearly, while the surface hardness, tensile strength, and cohesion decrease exponentially. In addition, the damage caused by freeze-thaw cycles and dry-wet cycles develops from the inside to the outside of the rock sample, which is manifested by the increase in the number of macropores and the emergence of new pores. The different combinations of several effects lead to different changes in pore structure and mineral composition of the samples under the four conditions. The research results are helpful in providing a scientific basis for the disease control of stone cultural relics.
