Abstract:A series of combinations of alkyl halide with tertiary amine such as ethyl -bromophenylacetate/tris[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl)]amine (EBP/Me6TREN), ethyl 2-bromoisobutyrate/triethylamine (EBiB/TEA), and ethyl 2-chloropropionate/N,N,N,N,N-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (ECP/PMDETA) have been developed as novel free radical initiators and used for the polymerizations of methyl acrylate (MA), methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene (St). The effects of the structure of alkyl halide and tertiary amine on the polymerization of MA were investigated. Gel permeation chromatograph (GPC) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-1 NMR) have been utilized to analyze the end group of the obtained poly(methyl acrylate). Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy was employed to identify the structure of the radicals produced by EBP/Me6TREN, and the results indicated that EBP reacted with Me6TREN via a single electron transfer (SET) nucleophilic mechanism to produce corresponding ethyl -phenylacetate radicals which subsequently initiated the polymerization of MA. As both alkyl halide and tertiary amine are commercially available at low cost, non-explosive, and ease of use and storage in comparison with conventional azo, peroxide or persulfate initiators, the combination of alkyl halide and tertiary amine as a free radical initiator is promising for large-scale practical applications.

Abstract:By combination of high trapping free radical efficiency of the thioketone and resonance of the allylic radical, a new type of mediating agent, 1,3,3-triphenylprop-2-ene-1-thione (TPPT) has been successfully synthesized, and then is used to study controlled free radical polymerization of methacrylates. Very stable TPPT radicals at the end of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) are detected in the polymerization of MMA using TPPT and AIBN as the control agent and initiator. The MALDI-TOF MS spectra are used to identify terminal groups of the resultant poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA), and major component of the obtained polymer has the structure, (CH₃)₂(CN)C-PGMA-C₇H₉O₃. Chain extension reaction tests ascertain formation of the dead polymers during the polymer storage and purification process of the polymers. Owing to very slow fragmentation reaction of the TPPT-terminated polymethacrylate radical and addition reaction of this radical with a primary radical, the growing chain radicals are difficult to be regenerated, leading to an unobvious change of the molecular weight with monomer conversion. The molecular weights of polymers can be controlled by the ratios of monomer/initiator and TPPT/initiator. However, the first order kinetics of the polymerization and the polymers with narrow polydispersity are obtained, and these phenomena are discussed. This study provides useful information on how to design a better controlling agent.

Abstract:ABSTRACTWe present an efficient method for synthesis of block copolymer by radical addition cross‐coupling reaction between two different polymeric radicals and different double bonds. Two different monobromo polymers (P1‐Br and P2‐Br) were reacted with Cu(0)/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine in the presence of ethyl dithiobenzoate or 1,1‐diphenylethylene (X) and the block copolymer (P1‐X‐P2) can be obtained with high efficiency, which cannot be prepared by normal atom transfer radical coupling of mixture of P1‐Br and P2‐Br. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thioxanthene-9-thione Mediated MMA Polymerization

Abstract:In the "cycloketyl radical mediated living polymerization"(CMP) process, a cycloketyl compound, [9,9′]bixanthenyl-9,9′ diol(BIXAN) was ultilized as initiator and mediator. The cycloketyl(CK) radical was used as the dormant radical to achieve the increase of molecular weight. Herein, a series of cycloketyl thioketones were synthesised by Lawesson’s reagent by one step reaction with high yeild,and we found that, when a special cycloketyl thioketone compound, thioxanthene-9-thione(TXT), was added to a routine radical polymerization system, TXT could capture chain radical, and simultaneously formed an radical analogous to CK radical in structure,which could trigger the growth of polymer chains. This simple system was efficient to initiate the polymerization of methyl methacrylate(MMA) and in all cases the molecular weights increased with the increase of conversions. By the end-group analysis with 1 H-NMR and MALDI-TOF MS, it was confirmed that the P-STXT radical was used to control the polymerization. The re-initiating reactions were achieved when PMMA was used as the macro-initiator.
Synthesis of Conjugated-Acidic Block Copolymers by Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

Abstract:A novel series of well-defined amphiphilic triblock copolymers containing conjugated polyfluorene (PF) and coillike poly(methacrylic acid) (PXM) were successfully synthesized by vacuum thermolysis of the precursor block copolymers, poly(2-tetrahydropyranyl methacrylate) - PF -poly(2-tetrahydropyranyl methacrylate) (PTHPMA-PF-PTHPMA) prepared by using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with a 2-bromoisobutyrate end-capped PF as the macroinitiator. Both the linear first-order kinetic plot and the linear dependence of the M. vs conversion indicate the controlled nature of the polymerization of THPDMA. The polydispersity indices of the PTHPMA-PF-PTHPMA triblock copolymers were essentially less than 1.3, demonstrating the well-defined structures of the obtained block copolymers. The chemical structures of the PTHPMA-PF-PTHPMA block copolymers were confirmed by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, and FTIR studies. Decomposition of the precursors at about 145 degreesC afforded the PMAA-PF-PMAA block copolymers, and the anhydride formed during the thermolysis could be successfully transformed to the corresponding acid by further hydrolysis in warm water. PMAA-PF-PMAA and PTHPMA-PF-PTHPMA presented almost identical photophysical behavior in diluted solutions, suggesting that similar excited species were essentially involved in their luminescent processes. Aggregation of PF segments was found to occur in the aqueous solution of the PMAA-PF-PMAA as revealed by spectroscopic studies. H-1 NMR results also substantiate the formation of PF aggregates stabilized by soluble PMAA.

Abstract:A novel and facile method, involving enzymatic monomer synthesis and a photocontrolled polymerization technique, has been successfully employed for the preparation of high-order multiblock copolymers. New acrylate monomers were synthesized via enzymatic transacylation between an activated monomer, i.e., 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl acrylate (TFEA), and various functional alcohols. These synthesized monomers were successfully polymerized without further purification via photoinduced electron transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization under low energy blue LED light (4.8 W) in the presence of an iridium-based photoredox catalyst (fac-[Ir(ppy)3]). In this condition, PET-RAFT allows us to achieve high monomer conversion (∼100%) with excellent integrity of the end group (>80%). Different multiblock (co)polymers, including poly(hexyl acrylate) pentablock homopolymer, poly(methyl acylate-b-ethyl acrylate-b-n-propyl acrylate-b-n-butyl acrylate-b-n-pentyl acrylate) pentablock copolymer, and poly(3-oxobutyl acrylate-b-methyl acrylate-b-3-(trimethylsilyl)prop-2-yn-1-yl acrylate) triblock copolymer containing functional groups were rapidly prepared via sequential addition of monomers without purification steps.

Abstract:A stable nitroxyl radical functionalized with an initiating group for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), 4-(2-bromo-2-methylpropionyloxy)-2,2,6,6tetramethyl-l-piperidinyloxy (Br-TEMPO), was synthesized by the reaction of 4-hydroxyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy with 2-bromo-2-methylpropionyl bromide. Stable free radical polymerization of styrene was then carried out using a conventional thermal initiator, dibenzoyl peroxide, along with Br-TEMPO. The obtained polystyrene had an active bromine atom for ATRP at the omega-end of the chain and was used as the macroinitiator for ATRP of methyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate to prepare block copolymers. The molecular weights of the resulting block copolymers at different monomer conversions shifted to higher molecular weights and increased with monomer conversion. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Visible‐light‐induced free radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 1,1,1‐trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEMA) with a difunctional initiator, dimethyl 2,6‐dibromoheptanedioate (DMDBHD), conjugated with a photoredox catalyst, tris(2‐phenylpyridinato)iridium(III) (fac‐[Ir(ppy)3]), is investigated. Kinetic studies demonstrate that homopolymerizations of both MMA and TFEMA are controlled radical polymerizations. The linear increase of molecular weights with monomer conversion and the narrow PDIs (1.2–1.4) reveal a good living character. In addition, PTFEMA‐b‐PMMA‐b‐PTFEMA triblock copolymer is prepared by a one‐pot process with sequential monomer addition. The of the triblock copolymers increases linearly with monomer conversion and the PDI of block copolymers is still maintained around 1.2–1.4. Experimental data confirm that the products are pure block polymers. Furthermore, the molar fraction of the TFEMA monomeric unit in the block copolymer is about 21.96%, close to the theoretical value 21.00% calculated from the monomer conversion. image

Abstract:Under the specially designated condition the polymerization of both tetrahydrofuran (THF) and tert -butyl methacrylate (tBMA) is a living one. The diblock copolymer, poly( tert -butyl methacrylate)- block -polytetrahydrofuran (PtBMA- b -PTHF), was successfully synthesized by means of the coupling reaction of living cationic PTHF + , SbF 6 with living anionic PtBMA - , Li + . LiCI, which has a beneficial effect on the molecular weight distribution (MWD) in the anionic polymerization of (meth)acrylates, hinders the coupling reaction of living chains and cannot be used in the preparation of tBMA precursor. The hydrolysis of the aforementioned diblock copolymer under acid condition results in the amphiphilic diblock copolymer, i.e. poly(methy1 acrylic acid)- block -polytetrahydrofuran (PMAA- b -PTHF). The diblock copolymers were characterized with GPC and IR.

Abstract:Novel energetic oxetane derivatives, 3-nitratomethyl-3'-methyloxetane (NMMO) and 3-azidomethyl-3'-methyloxetane (AMMO), were used as monomers in a triflic anhydride [(CF3SO2)(2)O] initiating polymerization system. The "living cationic" characteristics of the polymerization were investigated and confirmed via a F-19 NMR technique. This living polymerization system was, thus, utilized in the synthesis of well-defined block copolymers. Novel polymers of the A-B-A type with various molecular weights ((M) over bar(w) = 14320-40660) and low polydispersity indexes (PDI = 1.11-1.29) were obtained. Two glass transition temperatures (T-g) near the respective T(g)s of the homopolymers were found in the DSC thermograms of the block copolymers. The THF/AMMO copolymers were shown to possess higher thermal stability compared to THF/NMMO copolymers from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). (C) 1995 John Wiley and Sons, Inc.

Abstract:Using potassium tert-butoxide (t-BuOK) as initiator, anionic polymerization and copolymerization of the methacrylate monomers are carried out in tetrahydrofuran at 0 degrees C or above. The polymers are characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-1-NMR), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). There is a critical concentration of the active species in t-BuOK, above which no matter how much more t-BuOK is added, it has no initiation activity. Among the active species of t-BuOK, the main part possesses large average vibration distance between anion-cation pairs, which can initiate all methacrylate monomers in this study. While another part of the active species possesses the small average vibration distance, which can only initiate the polymerization of methyl methacrylate at slow rate. It provides an supporting evidence for the "channel idea" proposed previously. Finally, poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-poly(lauryl methacrylate)-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA-b-PLMA-b-PMMA) three-block copolymer is synthesized. This study paves the way for the synthesis of thermoplastic elastomers with full polar monomers and full saturated chains by anionic polymerization.

Abstract:Full Paper: A new multidentate amine ligand, 1,3,5-tris[(3-dimethylamino)propyl]-hexahydro-1,3,5-triazine (T-triazine) was developed for the atom transfer radical polymerization of methacrylates (dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA)). It was found that with T-triazine as ligand, CuBr mediated a living polymerization of DMAEMA and MMA, producing polymers with controlled molecular weight and narrow polydispersity. The DMAEMA bulk polymerization and MMA solution polymerization in THF and gamma-butyrolactone (gamma BL) followed first order kinetics with respect to the monomer. At lower temperature, both polymerizations had an induction period and the induction time decreased with increasing temperature. The measured apparent active energy was 67.8 kJ/mol for DMAEMA polymerization. The NMR spectra confirmed that the polymerizations proceeded via an atom transfer radical process.

Abstract:A novel series of well-defined amphiphilic block copolymers containing conjugated poly(fluorene) (PF) block and coillike poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl metbacrylate) (PDMAEMA) were successfully synthesized through atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initialized by a 2-bromoisobutyrate end-capped PF macroinitiator using CuCl/HMTETA (1,1,4,7,10,10-hexamethyltriethylenetetramine) as the catalyst. The first-order kinetics plot indicated a constant number of active species present in the polymerization. The molecular weight and molecular weight distribution were well controlled, implying well-defined block structure of the prepared block copolymers. The chemical structures of the copolymers were confirmed by H-1 NMR studies. The copolymers could be successfully quanternized, and the final conjugated-ionic block copolymers were found to form PF aggregates in water as confirmed by 1H NMR, UV-vis, and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. PL spectra and quantum efficiency measurement also suggested the formation of excimers within the PF aggregates.
A novel radical polymerization system initiated by a redox reaction with NHPI and xanthone

Abstract:A novel redox reaction system consisting of xanthone (XT) and N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) for radical polymerization is developed where NHPI and XT experience a one-electron-transfer reaction, which produces two kinds of radicals, PINO radicals and cycloketyl (CK) radicals. This redox system is efficient to initiate the radical polymerization of three typical monomers, i.e., methyl methacrylate (MMA), butyl acrylate (BA) and styrene, and the analytical results of the end-groups by NMR and MALDI-TOF MS demonstrate that PINO radicals initiate the polymerization, while CK radicals act as dormant radicals. As the polymerization proceeds, a significant increase in molecular weight and a decrease in PDI are observed, which could be attributed to the reversible deactivation between CK radicals and polymer chain radicals.

Abstract:This work demonstrates a new halogenation reaction through sequential radical and halogen transfer reactions, named as "radical and atom transfer halogenation" (RATH). Both benzoxazine compounds and poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) have been demonstrated as active species for RATH. Consequently, the halogenated compound becomes an active initiator of atom transfer radical polymerization. Combination of RATH and sequential ATRP provides an convenient and effective approach to prepare reactive and crosslinkable polymers. The RATH reaction opens a new window both to chemical synthesis and molecular design and preparation of polymeric materials.

Abstract:A photo-induced controlled radical polymerization of methacrylates with perfluoro-1-iodohexane as an initiator and benzaldehyde derivatives, including p-anisaldehyde, p-cyanobenzaldehyde and 2,4-dimethoxy benzaldehyde, as organic photocatalysts is demonstrated by using 23 W compact fluorescent lamps as the light source in the presence of a potential reductant N, N-dimethylaniline. Linear evolution of the molecular weight with monomer conversion is observed under the optimized conditions. Additionally, successful chain extension reactions are obtained by a one-pot process and with the as-prepared polymers as macroinitiators. Specifically, the one-pot synthesis of PPEGMA (conversion = 85%) with a high molecular weight and relatively narrow molecular weight distribution (M-n,M-GPC = 44 000 g mol(-1), PDI = 1.54) is achieved by using PPEGMA-I (M-n,M-GPC = 10 200 g mol(-1), PDI = 1.33) as a macroinitiator and p-anisaldehyde as an organocatalyst. Although the current technology exhibits a somewhat low controllability for preparing block copolymers, compared with the common ATRP and RAFT polymerization process, it offers a promising alternative as a metal-free organo-catalyzed photo-induced variant of ATRP.
Poly( Methyl Methacrylate)- Block- Poly( N- Vinyl Pyrrolidone) Diblock Copolymer: A Facile Synthesis Via Sequential Radical Polymerization Mediated by Isopropylxanthic Disulfide and Its Nanostructuring Polybenzoxazine Thermosets

Abstract:In this contribution, we reported a facile synthesis of poly(methyl methacrylate)-block-poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PMMA-b-PVPy) diblock copolymers via sequential radical polymerizations mediated by isopropylxanthic disulfide (DIP). It was found that the radical polymerization of N-vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP) mediated by DIP was in a controlled and living manner. In contrast, the polymerization of methyl methacrylate mediated by DIP displayed the behavior of telomerization, affording xanthate-terminated PMMA with a good control of molecular weights while the conversion of monomer was not very high. The xanthate-terminated PMMA can be successfully used as the macromolecular chain transfer agent for the polymerization of NVP via RAFT/MADIX process and thus PMMA-b-PVPy diblock copolymers can be successfully synthesized via sequential radical polymerization mediated by isopropylxanthic disulfide. One of these diblock copolymers was incorporated into polybenzoxazine and the nanostructured thermosets were obtained as evidenced by transmission electron microscopy, small angle X-ray scattering, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. Abstract:Living radical polymerization (LRP) of organic and water soluble acrylates and acrylamides was mediated by a versatile cobalt porphyrin complex (TMP-OH)Co. The capability of this cobalt complex to mediate LRP in both polar and non-polar media permits the direct synthesis of useful and previously difficult to prepare functional block copolymers.
