Abstract:The aim of this research is to investigate two biological solutions, namely, soybean urease induced calcite precipitation (SICP) and xanthan gum (XG) biopolymer, for the remediation of cracks in ancient earthen structures. In this study, soil crack patterns captured by a high-resolution camera are quantified using image processing software. Optical microscopy and wind erosion tests were utilized to analyze the surface cementation effect in the repaired earth samples. Experimental results show that repaired samples treated with SICP solution (a mixture of soybean urease and urea-calcium chloride solutions), XG solution, and SICP-XG solutions (a mixture of SICP and xanthan gum solutions) can significantly decrease the surface crack ratio, and both the total length and the average width of the cracks, especially for the sample treated by the SICP-XG solution. In the wind erosion test, the repaired cracks in these three earthen samples remain stable under wind speeds of 15 m/s. In addition, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction tests confirmed the cementation effect induced by CaCO3 crystals and xanthan gum. (C) 2022 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Abstract:Ancient mortars played a crucial role in the construction of historical architectures due to their physical and chemical compatibility with traditional building materials such as stones and bricks. Therefore, the analysis and optimization of the ancient mortar formula are significant in the restoration and preservation of historical sites. In this work, 20 mortar samples selected from five ancient stone pagodas in Zhejiang Province, China, were analyzed. The results showed that mud, lime-soil mortar, lime-sand mortar, and lime-gypsum mortar were used as binders in these pagodas. The Ca(OH)(2) / aggregate ratio ranging from 0.3 to 2.7 was usually used to prepare lime mortar. Protein and polysaccharide were also found in some samples.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic lime mortars were widely used in many ancient buildings due to their good performance in some fields (such as caking property, water repellency, weatherability, etc.). However, many ancient buildings and sites are suffering from various degrees of damage with the development of the economy and society and appropriate conservation and restoration are needed. The application of traditional construction materials, such as organic-inorganic lime mortars, attracts more and more attention in the conservation and restoration of ancient buildings in the recent years. So, the understanding of the components of original lime mortar which remained in ancient sites is of fundamental significance. In this work a set of analytical procedures to identify the organic additives in lime mortars by classical chemical analysis is proposed. The results show that using iodine-potassium iodide reagent, Benedict's reagent, reduction phenolphthalein reagent, Coomassie brilliant blue and sodium periodate oxidation glycerin acetyl acetone method could effectively detect a small amount of starch, reducing sugar, blood, protein and fatty acid ester that remained in ancient buildings’ lime mortars, respectively. These analytical methods are easy to operate with low detection limit, high accuracy and some other advantages.

Abstract:The complex preservation conditions make underwater cultural relics, especially organic ones-more frag-ile than terrestrial relics. Bamboo slips, the main carriers of ancient Chinese characters, are often found underwater. They have high cultural and historical values, but their mechanical strength is low, making them difficult to extract. Moreover, if their arrangement is disrupted during the extraction process, the subsequent restoration will be harder. In this study, veratraldehyde, a new underwater temporary solid material, was used to conduct in-situ reinforcement and extraction experiments on organic cultural relics. Based on these experiments, the researchers designed a three-layer wrapped protective frame and pro-posed the recovery method of dissolution and effective residue detection of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The experimental results showed that this method can nearly preserve the original state of frag-ile bamboo slips underwater and extract them out of the water safely. Also, the solidification process is reversible and without residues. It is a safe and reliable underwater technology for solidifying extraction of cultural relics. (c) 2021 Elsevier Masson SAS. Abstract:The Chinese people started to add organic matter to lime or tabia' no later than 1500 years ago, and thus created the traditional Chinese organic-inorganic mortar featured in this paper, which has been demonstrated by a great deal of archaeological evidence. According to the ancient literature records, the traditional Chinese organic-inorganic mortar was widely used for architectural purposes, such as rammed earthen buildings, finishing mortars, city walls, water conservancy projects and tombs. To verify the authenticity of the literature, four types of architecture were chosen from eastern China, and the obtained samples were analysed by chemical methods and FT-IR. The experimental results turned out to be consistent with the literature.
Preliminary study on consolidation materials for historical cement buildings

Abstract:There are modern historical cement buildings in many cities all around the country.Many of these buildings have both the western architectural aesthetic features and Chinese traditional art forms.Many have irreplaceable historical significance and artistic value.Due to long-term natural factors and human activities,the inner structures of some of these buildings are loose and weak.Protection of these historical cement buildings is a very urgent task.Because of the long-term effects of moisture,sulfur dioxide in the air,etc.,the calcium-containing components of the cement can dissolve resulting in porous structures formed which can further deteriorate.In this study a hydrophilic organo-silicon material with good tensile properties was used to consolidate and protect historical cement buildings.The compressive strength of cements consolidated by this material can be doubled.At the same time,this material has good permeability,and the surface appearance of the cement samples is almost unchanged.SEM pictures show that the porosity of consolidated sample decreased significantly compared with the untreated ones since the consolidation material can effectively fill the large pores.In addition,this material is relatively more hydrophilic than other polymeric organosilicon materials,hence the preservation damage is less likely to occur than in the case of buildings treated with strong water-repellent protective agents.Furthermore,this material is "green" and environment-friendly because it does not require large amounts of organic solvents.This study has important implications for further exploration and development of cement historic building consolidation materials.

Abstract:The presence of calcareous concretions on the surface of marine archaeological ceramics is a frequently observed phenomenon. It is necessary to remove these materials when the deposits obscure the feature of ceramics. Unfortunately, calcareous concretions provide distinctive documentation of the burning history of ceramics. The interaction of acid solution or detachment of the deposit layers in physical ways leads to the loss of archeological information. To prevent the loss of archeological information and to achieve precise and gentle concretion removal, responsive hydrogel cleaning systems have been developed. The hydrogels synthesized are composed of networks of poly(vinyl acetate)/sodium alginate that exhibit desirable water retention properties, are responsive to Ca2+ ions, and do not leave any residues after undergoing cleaning treatment. Four distinct compositions were selected. The study of water retention properties involved quantifying the weight changes. The composition was obtained from Fourier transform infrared spectra. The microstructure was obtained from scanning electron microscopy. The mechanical properties were obtained from rheological measurements. To demonstrate both the efficiency and working mechanism of the selected hydrogels, a representative study of mocked samples is presented first. After selecting the most appropriate hydrogel composite, a cleaning process was implemented on the marine archaeological ceramics. This article demonstrates the advantages of stimuli-responsive hydrogels in controlling the release of acid solution release, thereby surpassing the limitations of traditional cleaning methods.

Abstract:Lime mortar with organic additives is one of the most widely used building materials in ancient China and continues to play an important role in historic structure restoration. This study investigated the erosion of ordinary aerial lime and sticky-rice mortars under the cyclic actions of wetting–drying (WD) and dilute sulfate acid (DSA). Comprehensive experimental tests were conducted to study the mechanical properties, quality, microstructure and pore structure of the mortars according to cyclic WD and DSA actions. Results showed that both the WD and DSA actions can significantly degrade the compressive and shear strengths of the mortars. The DSA softens the mortar matrices more severely than the WD by a leaching mechanism. Apparently, sticky rice does not change the micro morphology, pore structure and packing pattern of the mortar matrices, but it inhibits the carbonation of the lime. Both the WD and DSA actions can erode the ordinary aerial lime and sticky-rice mortars, causing more porous matrices and coarser particles. The results of this study make it possible to clarify how the WD and DSA actions affect the durability of partially matured aerial lime mortars with or without sticky rice, with potential uses in the restoration of ancient buildings.

Abstract:This study aims to provide a reference for the protection of the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City. As a basis for the further preservation of these cultural relics, it is essential to analyze the microflora colonizing these soil objects. To do that, samples with microbial characteristics were obtained and analyzed by SEM and metagenomic sequencing to reveal the constitute of the microflora. We investigated the biodegradation of the protective material-epoxy resin by microorganisms in the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City, and found that they would interact with each other, which would affect the performance of the epoxy resin. The specific mechanism of action requires further investigations. We evaluated the effect of ethyl orthosilicate on soil properties. Interestingly, we found that excess ethyl orthosilicate added to the soil of the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City will cause a change in particle size and allowed the soil to condense in the laboratory. This indicates that the large use of orthosilicate may lead to intensified soil weathering, which in turn will cause soil erosion.

Abstract:The removal of calcareous deposits from archaeological ceramics is a very normal conservation-restoration treatment. Among the products used, chelating agents are quite common, including ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid salts (EDTA) (Berducou in La Conservation en archéologie: méthodes et pratique de la conservation-restauration des vestiges archéologiques, Masson, Paris, 1990; Buys and Oakley The conservation and restoration of ceramics, Butterworth-Heinemann, Oxford, 1993; Crisci et al. in Appl Phys A Mater Sci Process, 2010. https://doi.org/10.1155/2009/893528). Nevertheless, some studies have proved that they can cause damages on the ceramic pieces, regarding changes in their composition, such as dissolution of calcareous components and metallic oxides leaching (Gibson in Stud Conserv, 1971. https://doi.org/10.1155/2009/893528; Fernández and Seva Sautuola in Rev del Inst Prehist y Arqueol 9:471–982, 2003). As a consequence, their artistic values might also change. In spite of that, these products are nowadays still in use, meaning that the treatments might be changing the information that archaeological ceramics carry. However, from the 80 s onwards a more secure alternative to direct application methods based on thickening agents was developed. With the aim of analysing the degradation mechanisms that may take place after the cleaning treatments' application, ceramic specimens with artificial calcareous deposits (Sáenz-Martínez et al. in Eur Phys J Plus 136:798, 2021) were treated with a low-concentrated solution of EDTA tetrasodium salt applied by immersion and thickened with xanthan gum powder (Vanzan® NF-C). Finally, the products from the cleaning treatments were neutralised, respectively, by immersion and by rinsing with deionized water. The composition of the ceramic samples was established before the growth of calcareous deposits and after the treatments, in order to determine their effectiveness and safety. According to the results, EDTA salt treatments, both by immersion and thickened, were effective regarding the removal of the calcareous deposits and did not modify the elemental and mineralogical original composition of the specimens (XRF, XRPD, TG-DSC). In addition, no gel residues were detected by FTIR-ATR.

Abstract:Delving into the past through the study of pottery, this research employs scientific techniques to explore Jiangzhai pottery from circa 3000–4000 BCE. The investigation revealed that the red and grey pottery, despite their color differences, have similar elemental compositions, suggesting that these variations are not due to elemental differences but likely due to a higher concentration of Fe3+ in the red pottery. Analysis of the pigments using elemental analysis, polarized light microscopy, and XRD showed that the red pigment contains ochre, the black is a mix of pyrolusite and magnetite, and the white is composed of calcite. Additionally, thermal expansion analysis determined that the firing temperature of Jiangzhai colored pottery is around 1050 °C, with similar temperatures for both red and grey pottery, suggesting that kiln operations like stacking or overlapping are likely causes of the color variations. This study not only broadens our understanding of ancient pottery-making techniques and cultural practices but also emphasizes the critical role of scientific analysis in preserving and interpreting the rich artistic and technological legacy of ancient cultures.

Abstract:On the basis of study on microstructure of secondary calcined lime,this paper probes into applications of secondary calcined lime in conservation of cultural relics.SEM observations show that Ca(OH)2 is transformed into a kind of acicular CaO with diameter 50 nm and length 200 nm after being calcined,and this nanosized secondary CaO is transformed into an oval platelike Ca(OH)2 with size 200-300 nm after slaked.Meanwhile,research results indicate that nanosized particles and high reactivity of secondary calcined lime are responsible for superior properties of sticky rice-lime mortar and high permeability of Ca(OH)2-alcohol dispersions,and it is feasible that secondary calcined lime is used for consolidation of soil,stone and brick-based cultural heritage.

Abstract:Non - aqueous dispersion of polymer resin is a new kind of anti - weathering consolidant for earthen buildings and archaeological sites, it has good effect when used to consolidate loess samples and archaeological sites. The material was tested to consolidate sandy soil samples in this work. The sandy soil samples treated by low concentration of non aqueous dispersion has little change in weight and color, has good results in water decomposition test, freezing - thaw test and salt tolerance test. It proves that non - aqueous dispersion is suitable for consolidate sandy soil buildings and archaeological sites.

Abstract:This is a comprehensive review on the chemical cleaning techniques available for the conservation of historic stone relics.This research discusses principles for cleaning,different types of pollutants,chemical cleaning technologies and their correlation with other special cleaning methods,the main principles of chemical cleaning methods and examples of their application,plaster cleaning technologies and so on.Some examples of collaborative research work with Zhejiang University are presented.The review will provide some ideas for Chinese researchers in stone conservation.

Abstract:Targeting cleaning of the artificial gypsum layer on white marble was studied. It was conducted by means of the specific depletion of the calcium and sulfate ions by the barium carbonate scavenger, which led to the continuous dissolution and clearance of gypsum layer. The cleaning effect was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), capillary suction, and color difference measurement. By this method, only the gypsum layer was cleared away and the carbonate substrate of marble was left intact at the same time. This method will be highly useful for the conservation of marble relics from surface weathering.

Abstract:This article presents an integrated analytical method to investigate the polychrome clay sculptures of the Qinglian Temple in Jincheng City, Shanxi Province, China. Digital microscopy, SEM-EDS, XRD, Herzberg stain, Micro-Raman spectroscopy and FT-IR were selected to identify the raw materials and techniques used to produce the ground clay layer, the white powder layer and the mineral pigment of the polychrome clay sculptures. The investigation shows that the clay used to make the coarse and fine clay layer is consistent. However, different kinds of fibres were found mixed in the coarse and fine clay layers: wheat straw was the main fibre used in coarse clay layer, while the bast fibres, including ramie, kenaf and sisal hemp, were used as the fibre supports in the fine clay layers due to their useful properties. The white powder layer was made of a mixture of kaolinite and gypsum. For the mineral pigments, it principally contained red (hematite, minium or a mixture of minium and cinnabar), green (atacamite and atacamite), blue (azurite), yellow (yellow ochre), black (amorphous carbon) and white (the mixture of kaolinite and gypsum). Additionally, a gilding technique and multiple paint layers also typified many pigment areas. This work has furthered understanding of the materials and techniques used in making the sculptures of the Qinglian Temple and has clear implications for the restoration and conservation treatments on these kinds of ancient painted clay sculptures.

A case study and mechanism investigation of typical mortars used on ancient architecture in China

Abstract:Mortars sampled from Dutifulness Monument, where typical ancient China mortar formulas and manufacturing processes were used, were analyzed by starch–iodine test, FTIR, DSC–TG, SEM and XRD methods. Several modeling samples were then made according to historical records of Chinese ancient mortar formulas and analyzed with the same techniques. The modeling formulas also were used to consolidate loose specimens. The results show that sticky rice plays a crucial role in the microstructure and the consolidation properties of lime mortars. A possible mechanism was suggested that biomineralization may occur during the carbonation of calcium hydroxide, where the sticky rice functions as a template and controls the growth of calcium carbonate crystal. The organic–inorganic materials formed based on this mechanism will be more favorable for consolidating the loose samples both in strength improvement and durability.

Abstract:Sticky rice–lime mortar is one of the most important technological inventions in the Chinese architectural history. In this work, an experimental study on the application of sticky rice–lime mortar in conservation of the stone tower in the Xiangji Temple was performed by means of the property characterization, SEM, XRD and DSC-TG analysis. Our Results indicate that paper fiber is the most effective admixture to endure freezing–thawing cycles and increase the compressive strength of sticky rice–lime mortar, and the use of aluminum sulfate reduces the drying shrinkage values and increases the compressive strength because of the formation of ettringite in sticky rice–lime mortar. It is suggested that 6% aluminum sulfate or 3% paper fiber may be the appropriate admixture of sticky rice–lime mortar in conservation of cultural relics. Based on the results of laboratory experiment, the sticky rice–lime mortar with 3% paper fiber is selected as the grouting material for the conservation of the Xiangji Temple tower.
Experimental Study on Optimization of Consolidation Parameters of Silty Clay Based on Response Surface Methodology: A Case Study on the Protection and Restoration of the Ming and Qing Dynasty Hangzhou Seawall Site

Abstract:The preservation of the ancient seawall site is a focal point and challenge in the protection of historical relics along Hangzhou's Grand Canal in China. This endeavor holds significant historical and contemporary value in uncovering and perpetuating Hangzhou's cultural heritage. Researchers investigating the Linping section of the seawall site aimed to address soil site deterioration by selecting environmentally friendly alkali-activated slag cementitious materials and applying the response surface method (RSM) to conduct solidification experiments on the seawall soil. Researchers used the results of unconfined compressive strength tests and microscopic electron microscopy analysis, considering the comprehensive performance of soil solidification mechanisms and mechanical properties, to establish a least-squares regression fitting model to optimize the solidification material process parameters. The experimental results indicate that the optimal mass ratio of lime, gypsum, and slag for achieving the best solidification process parameters for the seawall soil, with a 28-day curing period, is 1:1.9:6.2. This ratio was subsequently applied to the restoration and reconstruction of the seawall site, with parts of the restored seawall exhibited in a museum to promote the sustainable conservation of urban cultural heritage. This study provides theoretical support and practical guidance for the protection and restoration of soil sites.

Abstract:This research was conducted as part of the National Technology Support Project 'Research on the cleaning of harmful surface residues in the stone grotto',and is prepared as a draft of 'Standard chemical cleaning procedures to clean surface pollution on immovable stone relics'.In order to get an extensive and in-depth understanding of the subject,the experiences with laboratory chemical cleaning and on-site chemical cleaning at Yungang grotto is discussed.International chemical cleaning technique requirements and processes were reviewed.Also included were preliminary field investigations,criteria for selection of cleaners,glue and attachment techniques,evaluation of results,laboratory research and on-site tests.Positive and negative factors related to the chemical cleaning of stone relics are discussed.This work,therefore,provides useful information for the development of standards for chemical cleaning of stone relics.
