Abstract:We present CGO-AS, a generalized Ant System (AS) implemented in the framework of Cooperative Group Optimization (CGO), to show the leveraged optimization with a mixed individual and social learning. Ant colony is a simple yet efficient natural system for understanding the effects of primary intelligence on optimization. However, existing AS algorithms are mostly focusing on their capability of using social heuristic cues while ignoring their individual learning. CGO can integrate the advantages of a cooperative group and a low-level algorithm portfolio design, and the agents of CGO can explore both individual and social search. In CGO-AS, each ant (agent) is added with an individual memory, and is implemented with a novel search strategy to use individual and social cues in a controlled proportion. The presented CGO-AS is therefore especially useful in exposing the power of the mixed individual and social learning for improving optimization. The optimization performance is tested with instances of the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP). The results prove that a cooperative ant group using both individual and social learning obtains a better performance than the systems solely using either individual or social learning. The best performance is achieved under the condition when agents use individual memory as their primary information source, and simultaneously use social memory as their searching guidance. In comparison with existing AS systems, CGO-AS retains a faster learning speed toward those higher-quality solutions, especially in the later learning cycles. The leverage in optimization by CGO-AS is highly possible due to its inherent feature of adaptively maintaining the population diversity in the individual memory of agents, and of accelerating the learning process with accumulated knowledge in the social memory.

Abstract:The ant algorithm is an optimization algorithm that is gained by observing the real ant colonies, and it is very useful in solving difficult optimization problems and distributed control problems. The algorithm is modeled on a key concept called "stigmergy" of the ant societies, which is used in our algorithm to design the cooperation of multi-robots. In an unknown environment, one of the most important problems in the multi-robot system is to decide how many robots are needed to complete a task. With the concept "stigmergy", the number of the robots cooperating on a task is decided according to the difficulty of the task. Given the definition of the "task deadlock", an adaptive attenuation factor to eliminate task deadlock is introduced in the cooperation algorithm. Simulations show the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Abstract:We have studied the problem of reaching a globally optimal segment for a graph-like environment with a single or a group of autonomous mobile agents. Firstly, two efficient simulated-annealing-like algorithms are given for a single agent to solve the problem in a partially known environment and an unknown environment, respectively. It shows that under both proposed control strategies, the agent will eventually converge to a globally optimal segment with probability 1. Secondly, we use multi-agent searching to simultaneously reduce the computation complexity and accelerate convergence based on the algorithms we have given for a single agent. By exploiting graph partition, a gossip-consensus method based scheme is presented to update the key parameter-radius of the graph, ensuring that the agents spend much less time finding a globally optimal segment.

Abstract:A cooperative group optimization (CGO) system is presented to implement CGO cases by integrating the advantages of the cooperative group and low-level algorithm portfolio design. Following the nature-inspired paradigm of a cooperative group, the agents not only explore in a parallel way with their individual memory, but also cooperate with their peers through the group memory. Each agent holds a portfolio of (heterogeneous) embedded search heuristics (ESHs), in which each ESH can drive the group into a stand-alone CGO case, and hybrid CGO cases in an algorithmic space can be defined by low-level cooperative search among a portfolio of ESHs through customized memory sharing. The optimization process might also be facilitated by a passive group leader through encoding knowledge in the search landscape. Based on a concrete framework, CGO cases are defined by a script assembling over instances of algorithmic components in a toolbox. A multilayer design of the script, with the support of the inherent updatable graph in the memory protocol, enables a simple way to address the challenge of accumulating heterogeneous ESHs and defining customized portfolios without any additional code. The CGO system is implemented for solving the constrained optimization problem with some generic components and only a few domain-specific components. Guided by the insights from algorithm portfolio design, customized CGO cases based on basic search operators can achieve competitive performance over existing algorithms as compared on a set of commonly-used benchmark instances. This work might provide a basic step toward a user-oriented development framework, since the algorithmic space might be easily evolved by accumulating competent ESHs.

Abstract:Ant colony algorithms comprise a novel category of evolutionary computation methods for optimization problems, especially for sequencing-type combinatorial optimization problems. An adaptive ant colony algorithm is proposed in this paper to tackle continuous-space optimization problems, using a new objective-function-based heuristic pheromone assignment approach for pheromone update to filtrate solution candidates. Global optimal solutions can be reached more rapidly by self-adjusting the path searching behaviors of the ants according to objective values. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with a basic ant colony algorithm and a Square Quadratic Programming approach in solving two benchmark problems with multiple extremes. The results indicated that the efficiency and reliability of the proposed algorithm were greatly improved.

Abstract:A multi-agent system (MAS) that composed of multiple interacting intelligent agents can be used to solve problems which are difficult or impossible for an individual agent or monolithic system to solve. Since the agent is autonomous and intelligent, it is reasonable to assume that it choice the behavior to bring itself the maximal benefit. Thus, the cooperation and coordination can be achieved successfully if we can wisely design the utility function for every agent so that every agent can get the maximal reward from the cooperation to accomplish a given task. However, the utility function of one agent usually involves those of others for most “real-world” cooperation needed tasks. Moreover, it is not uncommon that the conflicts between the gains of these agents arise. In other words, the individual optimality is not always consistent with collective optimality in MAS. These conflicts will reduce the collective utility if there is no coordination among these decentralized, autonomous agents. This paper addresses the essential that in MAS the action of one agent may influence the action of others and there usually be conflicts among the payoff of one another. We investigated the optimal coordination approach for multi-agent foraging, a typical MAS task, from the point view of game theory. After introduced several concepts, we built the equivalence between the optimal solution of MAS and the equilibrium of the game corresponding to that situation, and then we introduced evolutionarily stable strategy into the approach hope that it maybe be of service in addressing the equilibrium selection problem of traditional game theory. Finally, based on the hawk-dove game model, an evolutionarily cooperation foraging algorithm (ECFA) is proposed to evolve a stable evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS) and bring the maximal reward for the group. If there be some change in the configuration of the environment, ECFA can, then, evolve to the new ESS automatically. And we also proposed a reinforcement factor to accelerate the convergence process of ECFA and thus make a new algorithm Accelerated ECFA (AECFA). These techniques were shown to be successful by the multi-agent foraging simulations.

Abstract:Unit commitment(UC) has commonly been formulated as a large-scale mixed-integer optimization problem with the characteristic of being high-dimensional,discrete and nonlinear and is known as NP-hard problem in Mathematics.Domestic and international studies show that ant colony algorithm has its unique advantages in solving combination problems.The multi colony chaotic ant optimization algorithm presented in this paper bases on the basic ant optimization algorithm,divides the ant colony into search ant,detect ant and ergate,and brings in the chaotic volume.On one hand the algorithm inherits the superiority of ant colony algorithm in solving combination problems;on the other hand,the new algorithm maximizes the possibility for ant colony algorithm to overcome its slow operation,easy to fall into local optimum and other shortcomings.Finally,we verify the feasibility of the algorithm by the modified IEEE30,and the rationality and effectiveness of the algorithm are analyzed.The results show that the proposed multi colony ant algorithm is reasonable and effective.

Abstract:Ant Colony optimization takes inspiration from the behavior of real ant colony to solve optimization problems. This paper presents a parallel model for ant colony to solve the optimal packing problem. The problem is represented by a directed graph so that the objective of the original problem becomes to find the shortest closed circuit on the graph under the problem-specific constraints. A number of artificial ants are distributed on the graph and communicate with one another through the pheromone trails which are a form of the long-term memory guiding the future exploration of the graph. The algorithm supports the parallel computation and facilitates quick convergence to the optimal solution. The performance of the proposed method as compared to those of the genetic-based approaches is very promising.

Abstract:Heterogeneous multi-agent task allocation is a key optimization problem widely used in fields such as drone swarms and multi-robot coordination. This paper proposes a new paradigm that innovatively combines graph neural networks and ant colony optimization algorithms to solve the assignment problem of heterogeneous multi-agents. The paper introduces an innovative Graph-based Heterogeneous Neural Network Ant Colony Optimization (GHNN-ACO) algorithm for heterogeneous multi-agent scenarios. The multi-agent system is composed of unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned ships, and unmanned vehicles that work together to effectively respond to emergencies. This method uses graph neural networks to learn the relationship between tasks and agents, forming a graph representation, which is then integrated into ant colony optimization algorithms to guide the search process of ants. Firstly, the algorithm in this paper constructs heterogeneous graph data containing different types of agents and their relationships and uses the algorithm to classify and predict linkages for agent nodes. Secondly, the GHNN-ACO algorithm performs effectively in heterogeneous multi-agent scenarios, providing an effective solution for node classification and link prediction tasks in intelligent agent systems. Thirdly, the algorithm achieves an accuracy rate of 95.31% in assigning multiple tasks to multiple agents. It holds potential application prospects in emergency response and provides a new idea for multi-agent system cooperation.
Multi-colony Ant Algorithm for Multi-Objective Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling

Abstract:A new ant algorithm was proposed to take advantage of multiple ant colonies in order to solve the multi-objective resource-constrained project scheduling problem. The proposed algorithm utilizes the serial schedule generation scheme to construct project schedules stage by stage. Each ant colony has its own ob-jective function, a corresponding searching strategy and pheromone update mechanism designed for the specific function. The ant colony searches for better schedules individually, and meanwhile they share their pheromone information so as to improve the searching efficiency, A new elitist strategy was also designed for the multi- objective problem and integrated into the pheromone update mechanism. A series of multi-objective project scheduling instances were constructed using goal programming. Systematic computational tests showed that the proposed multi-colony ant algorithm can allocate constraint resources effectively to achieve the multi-objective optimization.

Abstract:Path planning problems have attracted the interest of more and more researchers due to its widespread existence in recent years. For example, express delivery and food delivery, courier often need to get to their destinations as quickly as possible under the constraints of time, economy etc. Therefore, the path planning issue under various constraints becomes more challenging. In order to solve these problems better, a new ant colony optimization algorithm based on adaptive greedy strategy (GSACO) is proposed this paper. In the process of continuous iteration, the control parameters of the algorithm are constantly adjusted and changed, which can expand the diversity of the population. In the process of ant colony search, the preference degree of ant colony is continuously changed by the greedy strategy, then the ant colony continuously explores the places with high pheromone concentration, and finally the convergence speed of the algorithm is accelerated. The experimental results show that GSACO algorithm has better performance than traditional heuristic algorithm and other evolutionary-based methods. The GSACO algorithm proposed in this paper can effectively accelerate the convergence speed, obtain the global optimal solution faster, and better solve the path planning problem under various constraints.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel evolutionary strategy for multiobjective optimization in which a population's evolution is guided by exploiting the geometric structure of its Pareto front. Specifically, the Pareto front of a particle population is regarded as a set of scattered points on which interpolation is performed using a geometric curve/surface model to construct a geometric parameter space. On this basis, the normal direction of this space can be obtained and the solutions located exactly in this direction are chosen as the guiding points. Then, the dominated solutions are processed by using a local optimization technique with the help of these guiding points. Particle populations can thus evolve toward optimal solutions with the guidance of such a geometric structure. The strategy is employed to develop a fast and robust algorithm based on correlation analysis for solving the optimization problems with more than three objectives. A number of computational experiments have been conducted to compare the algorithm to another three popular multiobjective algorithms. As demonstrated in the experiments, the proposed algorithm achieves remarkable performance in terms of the solutions obtained, robustness, and speed of convergence.

Abstract:An ant colony optimization (ACO) approach is proposed in this paper for real-time concurrent map building and navigation for multiple goals purpose. In real world applications such as rescue robots, and service robots, an autonomous mobile robot needs to reach multiple goals with the shortest path that, in this paper, is capable of being implemented by an ACO method with minimized overall distance. Once a global path is planned, a foraging-enabled trail is created to guide the robot to the multiple goals. A histogram-based local navigation algorithm is employed locally for obstacle avoidance along the trail planned by the global path planner. A re-planning-based algorithm aims to generate path while a mobile robot explores through a terrain with map building in unknown environments. In this paper, simulation results demonstrate that the real-time concurrent mapping and multi-goal navigation of an autonomous robot is successfully performed under unknown environments.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of path planning of a single robot and multi-Robots with multi-objective, an improved ant colony algorithm is proposed.In the improved ant colony algorithm, both local and global optimal searching are considered. In local optimal searching, gradient distribution is used to initialize the pheromone concentration to improve the convergence speed of the algorithm. The self-adaptive impact factor is used to enhance better fitness of the algorithm in different environments. In global optimal searching, a reward and punishment mechanism has been established to improve the pheromone update strategy. Furthermore, a node rearrangement strategy is adopted to increase the diversity of solutions. According to the improved colony algorithm, the problem of path planning of a single robot and multi-Robots with multi-objective can be solved. In two different scenarios, compared experiments show that the improved colony algorithm can obtain better path length, convergence speed and running time than traditional ant colony algorithm (ACO) and the improved ant colony algorithm (IACO-SFLA) in path planning of a single robot. Simulation results also show that the improved ant colony algorithm has good ability in multi-objective path planning. Especially, all robots can safely reach the targets by moving simultaneously and obstacles can be effectively avoided too.

Abstract:The balance between exploration and exploitation is critical to the performance of a Meta-heuristic optimization method. At different stages, a proper tradeoff between exploration and exploitation can drive the search process towards better performance. This paper develops a multi-objective grasshopper optimization algorithm (MOGOA) with a new proposed framework called the Multi-group and Co-evolution Framework which can archive a fine balance between exploration and exploitation. For the purpose, a grouping mechanism and a co-evolution mechanism are designed and integrated into the framework for ameliorating the convergence and the diversity of multi-objective optimization solutions and keeping the exploration and exploitation of swarm intelligence algorithm in balance. The grouping mechanism is employed to improve the diversity of search agents for increasing coverage of search space. The co-evolution mechanism is used to improve the convergence to the true Pareto optimal front by the interaction of search agents. Quantitative and qualitative outcomes prove that the framework prominently ameliorate the convergence accuracy and convergence speed of MOGOA. The performance of the presented algorithm has been benchmarked by several standard test functions, such as CEC2009, ZDT and DTLZ. The diversity and convergence of the obtained multi-objective optimization solutions are quantitatively and qualitatively compared with the original MOGOA by using two performance indicators (GD and IGD). The results on test suits show that the diversity and convergence of the obtained solutions are significantly improved. On several test functions, some statistical indicators are more than doubled. The validity of the results has been verified by the Wilcoxon rank-sum test.

Abstract:The robot task allocation is a crucial problem in logistics and distribution where robots are required to perform an array of tasks, with differing locations and numbers. As a result, optimally allocating tasks to available robots to minimize associated costs has become a challenging but essential optimization problem. This paper presents a Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) based Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) denoted as GCN-ACO, to solve the robot task allocation problems, which are formulated as the Travelling Salesman Problems (TSP) and Vehicle Routing Problems (VRP). The GCN-ACO algorithm comprises two stages. In the first stage, a GCN model is trained to predict a heatmap, which represents the probability of each edge belonging to the optimal route within the graph. In the second stage, we integrate the predicted heatmap into ACO to guide the ant colony to select edges with greater potential during the search process. We evaluate our approach's performance through testing on standard TSP and VRP datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method has a faster convergence rate and a higher quality of solutions compared to the baseline approaches.

Abstract:In this paper, an improved ant colony optimization(ICMPACO) algorithm based on the multi-population strategy, co-evolution mechanism, pheromone updating strategy, and pheromone diffusion mechanism is proposed to balance the convergence speed and solution diversity, and improve the optimization performance in solving the large-scale optimization problem. In the proposed ICMPACO algorithm, the optimization problem is divided into several sub-problems and the ants in the population are divided into elite ants and common ants in order to improve the convergence rate, and avoid to fall into the local optimum value. The pheromone updating strategy is used to improve optimization ability. The pheromone diffusion mechanism is used to make the pheromone released by ants at a certain point, which gradually affects a certain range of adjacent regions. The co-evolution mechanism is used to interchange information among different sub-populations in order to implement information sharing. In order to verify the optimization performance of the ICMPACO algorithm, the traveling salesmen problem (TSP) and the actual gate assignment problem are selected here. The experiment results show that the proposed ICMPACO algorithm can effectively obtain the best optimization value in solving TSP and effectively solve the gate assignment problem, obtain better assignment result, and it takes on better optimization ability and stability.

Abstract:The key problem of multi-robot exploration in unknown environment is how to appropriately select targets for the robots. In this paper, we present a new method to guide multi-robot exploration. Ant colony optimisation (ACO) is introduced to find the optimal target assignment for the robots. A new cost function is designed which takes into account distance, target position and robot density. The simulation results demonstrated that the proposed method effectively solves the problem of optimal target assignment and exploration efficiency is much increased.

Abstract:As an effective algorithm for solving complex optimization problems, artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm has shown to be competitive, but the same as other population-based algorithms, it is poor at balancing the abilities of global searching in the whole solution space (named as exploration) and quick searching in local solution space which is defined as exploitation. For improving the performance of ABC, an adaptive group collaborative ABC (AgABC) algorithm is introduced where the population in different phases is divided to specific groups and different search strategies with different abilities are assigned to the members in groups, and the member or strategy which obtains the best solution will be employed for further searching. Experimental results on benchmark functions show that the proposed algorithm with dynamic mechanism is superior to other algorithms in searching accuracy and stability. Furthermore, numerical experiments show that the proposed method can generate the optimal solution for the complex scheduling problem.
