Abstract:Electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (ENRR) has emerged as a potential alternative to the conventional Haber-Bosch process for ammonia production. However, ENRR technology is still restricted by the limited Faradaic efficiency due to the hard-to-break N-N triple bond. Herein, inspired by the biomimetic catalyst, we developed a Fe-modulated MoS2 catalyst (named Fe@MoS2) as an efficient ENRR catalyst. Raman spectra, coupled with the X-ray absorption spectroscopy, demonstrate the introduction of Fe into the MoS2 lattice and achieve partial 2H to 1T phase conversion. The presence of S-vacancies on MoS2 substrates was observed on scanning transmission electron microscopy images. Operando infrared absorption spectroscopy confirms that the constructed catalytic site significantly reduces barriers to nitrogen activation. The synthesized Fe@MoS2, with its superior geometric and electronic structures, exhibits a remarkable Faradaic efficiency of 19.7 ± 5.5% at -0.2 V vs. Reversible Hydrogen Electrode and a high yield rate of 20.2 ± 5.3 μg h-1 mg-1 at -0.8 V vs. Reversible Hydrogen Electrode. Therefore, this work provides a fresh direction for designing novel catalysts, eventually boosting the nitrogen reduction reaction kinetics and accelerating the ENRR application.

Abstract:Optimizing interfacial contacts and thus electron transfer phenomena in heterogeneous electrocatalysts is an effective approach for enhancing electrocatalytic performance. Herein, we successfully synthesized ultrafine β-Mo2C nanoparticles confined within hollow capsules of nitrogen-doped porous carbon (β-Mo2C@NPCC) and found that the surface layer of molybdenum atoms was further oxidized to a single Mo–O surface layer, thus producing intimate O–Mo–C interfaces. An arsenal of complementary technologies, including XPS, atomic-resolution HAADF-STEM, and XAS analysis clearly reveals the existence of O–Mo–C interfaces for these surface-engineered ultrafine nanostructures. The β-Mo2C@NPCC electrocatalyst exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water. Theoretical studies indicate that the highly accessible ultrathin O–Mo–C interfaces serving as the active sites are crucial to the HER performance and underpinned the outstanding electrocatalytic performance of β-Mo2C@NPCC. This proof-of-concept study opens a new avenue for the fabrication of highly efficient catalysts for HER and other applications, whilst further demonstrating the importance of exposed interfaces and interfacial contacts in efficient electrocatalysis.
The synergy between oxidized molybdenum and covalent triazine frameworks for electrocatalytic nitrogen fixation

Abstract:Although Mo-dependent nitrogenase and synthetic molecular complexes have attracted widespread attention in electrochemical nitrogen reduction, the activity of Mo-based catalysts for nitrogen reduction is low. Herein, molybdenum oxide nanoparticles were supported on charge-modulated conjugated triazine frameworks (Mo/CTF-I) via ion exchange reaction. Compared with Mo/CTF, the modified Mo/CTF-I maintains high specific surface area and microporous structure after metal loading and thermal treatment, and exposes high density MoOx as active sites. This strong interaction between MoOx and CTF-I induces the electron transfer from Mo to support to form MoOx with a valence state of 5+ and lowers the energy barrier to transfer the donated electrons to the empty anti-bonding π orbitals of N≡N. Electrochemical measurements proved that 5% Mo/CTF-I exhibited the highest NRR activity with a faradaic efficiency of 27.3% and an NH3 yield rate of 7.23 mg h-1 gcat.-1 at -0.405 V vs. RHE.

Abstract:The natural nitrogenase is still the most efficient catalyst on earth to reduce the ambient N2 into ammonia. The central part of the molecular machine is powered by a metallic core, usually a molybdenum atom, whose co-ordination valence state remains an enigma for us to unveil and mimic. Unlike the flexible bio-enzyme, inorganic heterogeneous catalysts are usually rigid in the coordination structure, making their valence states invariable, except some localized defects. In this study, we successfully synthesized a two-dimensional MoS2/Mo2C elec-trocatalyst, which contains a heterostructured interface with efficient charge and magnetism separation, exhibiting a gradual and broad valence state transition from Mo4+ to Mo2+. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that Mo3+ sites at the interface have a strong N2 adsorption energy of -0.75 eV with the side -on configuration, and an activated hydrogenation of *NH2 species. This bionic electrocatalyst displays a splendid performance in nitrogen reduction reaction with a Faradic efficiency of 42 % at-0.1 V vs RHE.

Abstract:Engineering heterojunction is an underlying strategy to develop efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by tune electronic properties by interfacial cooperation. Herein, we reported a heterojunction electrocatalyst (Co 3 ZnC/Co@NCNTs) by a facile ions exchange‐thermolysis two‐step strategy. Co 3 ZnC coupled with Co@NCNTs can effectively promote the interfacial charge transport between different components, optimized the adsorption and desorption behavior of intermediate products at the heterointerface. In‐situ grown N‐doped CNTs can not only improve the electrical conductivity but also can suppress the oxidation of transition metal nanoparticles in alkaline media. Moreover, the abundant nitrogen types (pyridinic, Co‐N x and grapitic nitrogen) in carbon skeleton can provide more active sites for oxygen adsorption. Benefit from the in situ grown NCNTs with outstanding electrical conductivity, the abundant nitrogen types (pyridinic‐N, Co‐N x and graphitic‐N), and the synergistic effect among components, Co 3 ZnC/Co@NCNTs hybrid not only demonstrates excellent oxygen reduce activity with a half‐wave potential of 0.83 V and fast mass transport with limited current density of 6.23 mA·cm ‐2 , but also exhibits superior stability and methanol tolerance, surpassed commercial Pt/C catalysts. This work provides an effective heterostructure for interfacial electronic modulation to improve its electrocatalytic performance.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) for the synthesis of ammonia (NH3) is one of the green and mild methods of artificial nitrogen fixation, promising as an alternative to replace the existing industrial process. Under the requirements of green chemistry and sustainable development, the design and development of highly active and stable electrocatalysts is very important for improved synthesis performance. Mimicking from the natural nitrogenase, Fe and Mo based catalysts have attracted much attention due to their superior catalytic performance for N2 adsorption and activation. In this work, an interfacial engineering strategy has been used to prepare a Fe, Mo-bimetallic electrocatalyst for the electrosynthesis of NH3. In detail, the pre-pyrolyzed biochar-based Fe2O3 composites were decorated with nano-flowered MoS2/MoO2 hybrids by a solvothermal process (MoS2/MoO2@Fe2O3/BC). As confirmed by the extensive characterization, the further modification not only introduced functional counterparts into the electrocatalysts but also regulated the morphology of the nanostructure. The electrochemical tests showed that the highest NH3 yield rate of MoS2/MoO2@Fe2O3/BC was 4.87 μg h − 1 cm−2 and highest FE was 16.5% in 0.1 M Na2SO4. The catalytic stability and durability were also presented in the longtime electrolysis and cycling experiments. The improved catalytic performance of decorated catalyst, as evidenced by the comparison with Fe2O3/BC, is attributed to the increased electrocatalytic active area, the moderated hydrophilicity, and the synergistic effect of Fe, Mo-bimetallic active sites. This study provides a new perspective for the design and development of low-cost transition metal complexes as electrocatalysts for nitrogen reduction reactions.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO3-RR) is an important route for sustainable NH3 synthesis and environmental remediation. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one family of promising NO3-RR electrocatalysts, however, there is plenty of room to improve in their performance, calling for new design principles. Herein, a MOF-on-MOF heterostructured electrocatalyst with interfacial dual active sites and build-in electric field is fabricated for efficient NO3-RR to NH3 production. By growing Co-HHTP (HHTP=2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene) nanorods on Ni-BDC (BDC=1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) nanosheets, experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrate the formation of Ni-O-Co bonds at the interface of MOF-on-MOF heterostructure, leading to dual active sites tailed for NO3-RR. The Ni sites facilitate the adsorption and activation of NO3-, while the Co sites boost the H2O decomposition to supply active hydrogen (Hads) for N-containing intermediates hydrogenation on adjacent Ni sites, cooperatively reducing the energy barriers of NO3-RR process. Together with the accelerated electron transfer enabled by built-in electric field, remarkable NO3-RR performance is achieved with an NH3 yield rate of 11.46 mg h-1 cm-2 and a Faradaic efficiency of 98.4%, outperforming most reported MOF-based electrocatalysts. This work provides new insights into the design of high-performance NO3-RR electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (ENRR) is emerging as a promising routine for the sustainable production of ammonia. Hindered by the strong triple bond in N-2 and unfavorable hydrogen evolution reaction, it is critical to develop efficient catalysts with excellent activity and selectivity. Herein, we propose a novel microfluidic platform that achieves the continuous synthesis and morphology regulation of a two-dimensional heterocatalyst FeMo/g-C3N4 through a precipitation process in a confined space. Owing to the rapid mixing and microfluidic manipulation, FeMo/g-C3N4 maintains an overwhelmingly favorable structure compared to the batch methods. Benefiting from the ultrasmall active sites (0.86 nm), homogeneous nanodot distribution, and abundant 2D surface, the promoted N-2 chemisorption and competitive ENRR performance can be simultaneously ensured, as confirmed by the experimental studies. By varying the applied working potential, the optimal ammonia yield can be determined as 33.25 mu g h(-1) mg(cat.)(-1) at -1.2 V. This work innovatively opens a pathway for morphological fine structural tuning of two-dimensional heterocatalysts, further promoting the ENRR field's development.
Single Faceted Two-Dimensional Mo2C Electrocatalyst for Highly Efficient Nitrogen Fixation

Abstract:Electrocatalytic reduction of N-2 to NH3 under an ambient atmosphere is highly desirable and extremely critical for energy-efficient nitrogen utilization. Inspired by the natural MoFe protein-based enzyme, the nitrogenase, we exploited this electrochemical process with a unique two-dimensional catalyst, namely, molybdenum carbide (Mo2C). The catalyst is synthesized through a chemical vapor deposition method, with a highly orientated (200) facet of the alpha-Mo2C phase. A remarkable Faradaic efficiency as high as 40.2% has been achieved on the (200) faceted alpha-Mo2C during the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). Density functional theory calculations confirm that rate-determining steps *NNH2 -> NNH3 and *NH -> *NH2 experience a low energy barrier on the (200) surface following the proton-electron coupled, distal associated mechanism. To protect Mo from leaching during the NRR process, we also grew layers of graphene on top of Mo2C, forming a chemically enduring two-dimensional heterostructured electrode.

Abstract:Further improvements in ammonia selectivity and Faraday efficiency are severely hampered by the complexity of the nitrate reduction process and the intense competitive reaction. Therefore, it is awfully imperative to develop highly active NITRR electrocatalysts and further investigate their catalytic mechanism. In this work, MoO 2 /Ni cuboids with intimate interfaces were constructed by in-situ phase separation induced strategy for electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate and selective synthesis of ammonia, further expanding the application field of this metallic oxide-metal heterostructure catalyst. The experimental results indicate that the strong interaction between MoO 2 and Ni causes the redistribution of interfacial charges, which reasonably explains the extraordinary NITRR activity of MoO 2 /Ni. In addition, the exposure of numerous active sites at the interface and the amelioration of inherent conductivity are also advantageous for the enhancement of catalytic activity. The theoretical results elucidate the detailed catalytic mechanism. MoO 2 /Ni showcases lower *NH 3 desorption energy and higher hydrogen adsorption energy than pure MoO 2 and Ni, which promotes the production of ammonia. In short, the strong electronic interaction between MoO 2 and Ni tailors the electronic structure of MoO 2 /Ni, thus regulating the adsorption energy of the intermediates, and observably improving the FE (95.9%) and ammonia selectivity (96.9%) of MoO 2 /Ni.

Abstract:Transition metal chalcogenide MoS2 catalysts are highly selective for the electrochemical reduction of dinitrogen (N2) to ammonia (NH3) in aqueous electrolytes. However, due to the low solubility of N2 in water, limited N2 diffusion and mass transport have heavily restricted the yield and the faradaic efficiency (FE). Here, we have demonstrated a highly efficacious assembled gas diffusion cathode with hollow Co-MoS2/N@C nanostructures to significantly improve the electrochemical reduction of N2 to NH3. Our results revealed that the synthesized Co-MoS2 heterojunctions with abundant graphitic N groups exhibited a superb NH3 yield of 129.93 μg h-1 mgcat-1 and a high faradaic efficiency of 11.21% at -0.4 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), as well as excellent selectivity and stability. The strategy described in this study offers new inspiration to design high-performance electrocatalyst assemblies for the sustainable environmental and energy applications.

Abstract:<p>Rational heterostructure-design in electrocatalysts represents a promising approach toward high performance in the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In specific, optimizing the H adsorption behavior at the surface/interface of heterostructure is of key importance to improve the catalytic performance. Herein, we demonstrate the construction of a heterostructure from a well-defined oxygen-bridged Co/Mo heterometallic zeolitic imidazolate framework (MOZ) as an efficient electrocatalyst for HER. The optimized hybrid exhibits high catalytic activity and stability in electrolytes with a wide pH range. Detailed XPS, XAS and theoretical studies reveal that the regulation of metal species can tailor the lattice of Mo<sub>2</sub>C within the hybrid and induce the formation of defect sites, which could not only induce surface charge transfer between the atoms and provide an additional active site, but also affect the H adsorption behavior at the interface of a heterostructure. This work provides an effective strategy to design a heterostructure with tailored active sites for energy conversion.</p>

Smart Interfacing between Co‐Fe Layered Double Hydroxide and Graphitic Carbon Nitride for High‐efficiency Electrocatalytic Nitrogen Reduction

Abstract:Bimetallic compounds such as hydrotalcite‐type layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are promising electrocatalysts owing to their unique electronic structures. However, their abilities toward nitrogen adsorption and reduction are undermined since the surface‐mantled, electronegative –OH groups hinder the charge transfer between transition metal atoms and nitrogen molecules. Herein, a smart interfacing strategy is proposed to construct a coupled heterointerface between LDH and 2D g‐C3N4, which is proven by density functional theory (DFT) investigations to be favorable for nitrogen adsorption and ammonia desorption compared with neat LDH surface. The interfaced LDH and g‐C3N4 is further hybridized with a self‐standing TiO2 nanofibrous membrane (NM) to maximize the interfacial effect owing to its high porosity and large surface area. Profited from the synergistic superiorities of the three components, the LDH@C3N4@TiO2 NM delivers superior ammonia yield (2.07 × 10−9 mol s−1 cm−2) and Faradaic efficiency (25.3%), making it a high‐efficiency, noble‐metal‐free catalyst system toward electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction. A coupled heterointerface between Co‐Fe LDH and g‐C3N4 is formed, which is revealed by DFT investigations to be favorable for nitrogen adsorption and ammonia desorption compared with neat LDH surface. The interfaced LDH and g‐C3N4 is further hybridized with a TiO2 nanofibrous membrane to maximize the interfacial effect, resulting in a high‐efficiency, noble‐metal‐free catalyst system towards electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction.

Abstract:A binary biomimetic Mo/Fe-nitrogen-carbon material (MoFe-NC) catalyst was synthesized following the concept of biological nitrogen fixation. The MoFe-NC catalyst demonstrated a maximum N2 reduction faradaic efficiency of 39.9 % and a NH3 yield rate of 28.5 μg mgcat-1 h-1 at ambient conditions.

Abstract:Electrochemical nitric oxide reduction reaction (NORR) to produce ammonia (NH3) under ambient conditions is a promising alternative to the energy and carbon-intensive Haber-Bosch approach, but its performance is still improved. Herein, molybdenum carbides (MoC) nanocrystals confined by nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets are first designed as an efficient and durable electrocatalyst for catalyzing the reduction of NO to NH3 with maximal Faradaic efficiency of 89% ± 2% and a yield rate of 1,350 ± 15 µg·h−1·cm−2 at the applied potential of −0.8 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) as well as high stable activity with negligible current density and NH3 yield rate decays over a 30 h continue the test. Moreover, as a proof-of-concept of Zn−NO battery, it achieves a peak power density of 1.8 mW·cm−2 and a large NH3 yield rate of 782 ± 10 µg·h−1·cm−2, which are comparable to the best-reported results. Theoretical calculations reveal that the MoC(111) has a strong electronic interaction with NO molecules and thus lowering the energy barrier of the potential-determining step and suppressing hydrogen evolution kinetics. This work suggests that Mo-based materials are a powerful platform providing great opportunities to explore highly selective and active catalysts for NH3 production.

Abstract:Exploring efficient and low-cost bifunctional catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) is highly desirable for the achievement of unitized regenerative fuel cells. Herein, a facile method to prepare hetero-interfacial Ni-Ni0.2 Mo0.8 N nanosheets with tailored d-band for efficient alkaline hydrogen electrocatalysis is presented. Mechanism studies indicate that interface engineering can downshift the d-band center of Ni-Ni0.2 Mo0.8 N nanosheets due to the electron transfer from Ni to Ni0.2 Mo0.8 N, which weakens the binding strength of reaction intermediates, thereby boosting the catalytic performance. Relative to pure Ni, Ni-Ni0.2 Mo0.8 N nanosheets show a lower overpotential of 83 mV at -10 mA cm-2 and good stability during 2,000 cycles for HER. Meanwhile, Ni-Ni0.2 Mo0.8 N nanosheets exhibit an improved exchange current density for HOR with a 10.2-fold enhancement in comparison with that of pure Ni. This work provides valuable insight into the reasonable design of efficient energy-related electrocatalysts based on the tailoring of d-band center by interface engineering.

Abstract:Engineering the synergistic interfacial structures in nanostructured electrocatalysts is an effective yet challenging pursuit. Here we report porous nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) entrapping heterojunctions between carbide and transition metal nanoparticles (NPs) as excellent bifunctional catalyst for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER). Dual-phase MoC and Fe NPs confined in NCNTs (denoted as ) was fabricated by trapping [Fe(C 2 O 4 ) 3 ] 3– into Zn/Mo-HZIF framework followed by pyrolysis. The resultant catalyst exhibited commendable bifunctional activities with small overpotentials at 50 mA cm −2 for the HER of 252 and OER of 304 mV, respectively. Theoretical calculations and experimental observation prove that the combination of Fe NPs generates synergistic heterointerfaces and improves OER activity of MoC, thus endowing outstanding bifunctional electrocatalytic performances. Moreover, the NCNTs, as the electronic communication amplifier, can facilitate electron transfer and inhibit the aggregation and corrosion of the active species. The controllable fabrication of MOF-derived heterostructures reported in this work provides a prospect for developing bifunctional MOF derivatives for water electrolysis.
