Abstract:Noble metal nanocrystals that are free of capping ligands promise significantly enhanced activities in surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and catalytic applications. Conventional physical and chemical processes to remove the capping ligands are usually too harsh to retain the morphology and surface structure of the noble metal nanocrystals. In this work, a mild, effective, and robust strategy is presented to remove the capping ligands from the surface of noble metal nanocrystals. Polyvinylpyrrolidone and oleylamine, which are generally known to adsorb strongly on the metal surface, have been successfully removed from the Au and Pt nanocrystals, respectively, by a convenient ligand‐exchange process with diethylamine. The resulting surface‐clean Au nanospheres and nanoflowers show significantly enhanced activity in SERS with great potential in single‐particle SERS applications. The surface‐clean Pt nanocrystals show highly improved electrocatalytic activity, compared with those cleaned by conventional methods. It is believed that this novel ligand‐exchange strategy opens up new opportunities in eliminating the effect of the capping ligands for optimal activities of colloidal noble metal nanocrystals in a variety of applications.
Customizable Ligand Exchange for Tailored Surface Property of Noble Metal Nanocrystals

Abstract:It is highly desirable, while still challenging, to obtain noble metal nanocrystals with custom capping ligands, because their colloidal synthesis relies on specific capping ligands for the shape control while conventional ligand exchange processes suffer from “the strong replaces the weak” limitation, which greatly hinders their applications. Herein, we report a general and effective ligand exchange approach that can replace the native capping ligands of noble metal nanocrystals with virtually any type of ligands, producing flexibly tailored surface properties. The key is to use diethylamine with conveniently switchable binding affinity to the metal surface as an intermediate ligand. As a strong ligand, it in its original form can effectively remove the native ligands; while protonated, it loses its binding affinity and facilitates the adsorption of new ligands, especially weak ones, onto the metal surface. By this means, the irreversible order in the conventional ligand exchange processes could be overcome. The efficacy of the strategy is demonstrated by mutual exchange of the capping ligands among cetyltrimethylammonium, citrate, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and oleylamine. This novel strategy significantly expands our ability to manipulate the surface property of noble metal nanocrystals and extends their applicability to a wide range of fields, particularly biomedical applications.

Abstract:Metal nanocrystals with concave surfaces are interesting for a wide variety of applications that are related to catalysis, plasmonics, and surface-enhanced spectroscopy. This interest arises from their high-index facets, surface cavities, and sharp corners/edges. Two major challenges are associated with this novel class of nanocrystals: 1) how to generate a concave surface with negative curvature, which is not favored by thermodynamics owing to its higher energy than the convex counterpart; and 2) how to stabilize the morphology of a nanocrystal with concave structures on the surface. Recently, a number of different procedures have been developed for the synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals with concave surfaces. This Review provides a brief account of these developments, with the aim of offering new insights into the growth mechanisms. We focus on methods based on two general strategies: 1) site-specific dissolution through etching and galvanic replacement; and 2) directionally controlled overgrowth by facet-selective capping, kinetic control, and template-directed epitaxy. Their enhanced catalytic and electrocatalytic properties are also described.

Abstract:Noble metal nanocrystals are a family of important catalysts for a broad range of processes (especially electrocatalytic ones), which are usually obtained as a hybrid each containing a metallic core and a ligand shell. It is well recognized that the ligand plays a critical role in regulating the crystal growth into different shapes and maintaining the colloidal stability of the nanocrystals. Recently, more effects of the ligand were revealed in controlling both the synthesis and the surface property of noble metal nanocrystals, which could be maneuvered to achieve distinctive catalytic properties. In this review, we present a summary of the roles of the ligand based on typical results from the literature. The review begins with a discussion on the roles of the ligand in the controlled synthesis of noble metal nanocrystals, including the shape control, the reduction potential control for suppressing self-nucleation and galvanic replacement reaction, and the electroless plating effect for noble metal/non-noble metal co-reduction. The following section includes a discussion of the effects of the ligand on the surface property of noble metal nanocrystals, including the ensemble size engineering, the ligand-metal electron transfer, and the local microenvironment construction, toward designable electrocatalytic properties. At the end, we provide our perspectives on the future research of ligand engineering as an advanced technique for tailoring electrocatalytic properties of noble metal nanocrystals.

Abstract:Lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles with a suitable surface coating are appealing for biomedical applications. Because high-quality upconversion nanoparticles are typically prepared in an organic solvent and passivated by hydrophobic oleate ligands, a convenient and reliable method for the surface modification of upconversion nanoparticles is thus highly desired to satisfy downstream biological investigations. In this work, we describe a facile and versatile strategy for displacing native oleate ligands on upconversion nanoparticles with a diversity of hydrophilic molecules. The ligand-exchange procedure involves the removal of original oleate ligands followed by the attachment of new ligands in a separate step. The successful coating of relevant ligands was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry analysis, and ζ-potential measurement. The surface-modified nanoparticles display high stability and good biocompatibility, as revealed by electron microscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and cytotoxicity assessment. Our study demonstrates that functional biomolecules such as biotin can be directly immobilized on the nanoparticle surface using this approach for the quick and effective detection of streptavidin.

Robust Removal of Ligands from Noble Metal Nanoparticles by Electrochemical Strategies

Abstract:Ligand-stabilized metal nanoparticles (MNPs) have attracted much attention due to their promising catalytic applications. Fully/partially removing these ligands is critical to realize their proper functions. The traditional ligand-removing approaches (e.g., thermal annealing) focus on the ligand side. Herein, we demonstrate an electrochemical method that pays attention to the MNPs side. By rationally regulating the potential (oxidizing Pt and hydrogen evolution) to construct robust Pt-O or Pt-H covalent bond to displace Pt-ligand coordination bond, the approach could effectively remove almost all kinds of ligands from Pt NPs. For the oxidizing Pt method, up potential > 1.3 V and cycling number (n) > 20 are preferred to completely remove the ligands. The water-soluble ligands (such as poly(vinylpyrrolidone), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, sodium acetate) can be removed by just one cycle after thoroughly being washed by water to remove the unattached ligands. However, the oil-soluble ligands (such as oleylamine, triphenylphosphine, dodecanethiol) need more cycles (n > 20), which may due to the strong coordination interaction between the ligands and Pt NPs. For the hydrogen evolution method, the generated Pt-H bond during hydrogen evolution reaction (HER, potential < -0.1 V) could break the interaction between the ligands and Pt NPs, resulting in the cleaned surface of Pt. The reverse adsorption of ligands and their further removal demonstrate the reliability of the above two methods. In addition, these methods can be extended to remove the ligands from other noble metals, such as Pd and Au NPs, without altering the particle size and morphology. This work verifies the effectiveness of using electrochemical strategies to remove the ligands. The successful removal of ligands is useful and important in getting the reliable data in many areas which are not limited to electrocatalysis, electrochemical sensing, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering.

Abstract:The nanoparticle (nano)-cell membrane interface is one of the most important interactions determining the fate of nanoparticles (NPs), which can stimulate a series of biological events, allowing theranostic and other biomedical applications. So far, there remains a lack of knowledge about the mechanisms governing the nanoparticle-cell membrane interface, especially the impact of ligand exchange, in which molecules on the nanosurface become replaced with components of the cell membrane, resulting in unique interfacial phenomena. Herein, we describe a family of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) of the same core size (∼13 nm core), modified with 12 different kinds of surface ligands, and the effects of their exchangeable ligands on both nanoparticle-supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) and nanoparticle-natural cell membrane interfaces. The ligands are categorized according to their molecular weight, charge, and bonding modes (physisorption or chemisorption). Importantly, we found that, depending on the adsorption affinity and size of ligand molecules, physisorbed ligands on the surface of NPs can be exchanged with lipid molecules. At a ligand exchange-dominated interface, the AuNPs typically aggregated into an ordered monolayer in the lipid bilayers, subsequently affecting cell membrane integrity, NP uptake efficiency, and the NP endocytosis pathways. These findings advance our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of the biological effects of nanoparticles from a new point of view and will aid in the design of novel, safe, and effective nanomaterials for biomedicine.

Abstract:Size- and morphology-controlled catalytic colloidal nanoparticles are emerging as novel catalysts for heterogeneous catalysis, but capping ligands adsorbed on the nanoparticle surfaces inherited from the colloidal synthesis always stand as a problem. This perspective highlights recent progress on the influences and removal of capping ligands on catalytic colloidal nanoparticles. Depending on the system, capping ligands can act as either a poison or a promoter for the capped nanoparticles and the underlying mechanisms will be discussed. Various methods for the removal of capping ligands on catalytic colloidal nanoparticles are summarized with an emphasis on a novel controlled oxidation treatment that we recently developed.

Abstract:Ligands are a fundamental part of nanocrystals. They control and direct nanocrystal syntheses and provide colloidal stability. Bound ligands also affect the nanocrystals' chemical reactivity and electronic structure. Surface chemistry is thus crucial to understand nanocrystal properties and functionality. Here, we investigate the synthesis of metal oxide nanocrystals (CeO2-x , ZnO, and NiO) from metal nitrate precursors, in the presence of oleylamine ligands. Surprisingly, the nanocrystals are capped exclusively with a fatty acid instead of oleylamine. Analysis of the reaction mixtures with nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy revealed several reaction byproducts and intermediates that are common to the decomposition of Ce, Zn, Ni, and Zr nitrate precursors. Our evidence supports the oxidation of alkylamine and formation of a carboxylic acid, thus unraveling this counterintuitive surface chemistry.

Abstract:The ability to engineer surface properties of nanocrystals (NCs) is important for various applications, as many of the physical and chemical properties of nanoscale materials are strongly affected by the surface chemistry. Here, we report a facile ligand-exchange approach, which enables sequential surface functionalization and phase transfer of colloidal NCs while preserving the NC size and shape. Nitrosonium tetrafluoroborate (NOBF4) is used to replace the original organic ligands attached to the NC surface, stabilizing the NCs in various polar, hydrophilic media such as N,N-dimethylformamide for years, with no observed aggregation or precipitation. This approach is applicable to various NCs (metal oxides, metals, semiconductors, and dielectrics) of different sizes and shapes. The hydrophilic NCs obtained can subsequently be further functionalized using a variety of capping molecules, imparting different surface functionalization to NCs depending on the molecules employed. Our work provides a versatile ligand-exchange strategy for NC surface functionalization and represents an important step toward controllably engineering the surface properties of NCs.

Abstract:The ability to engineer the surface ligands or adsorbed molecules on colloid nanocrystals (NCs) is important for various applications, as the physical and chemical properties are strongly affected by the surface chemistry. Here, we develop a facile and generalized ionic compound-mediated ligand-exchange strategy based on density functional theory calculations, in which the ionic compounds possess switchable bonding energy when they transfer between the ionized state and the non-ionized state, hence catalyzing the ligand-exchange process. By using an organic acid as the intermediate ligand, ligands such as oleylamine, butylamine, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and poly(vinyl alcohol) can be freely exchanged on the surface of Au NCs. Benefiting from this unique ligand-exchange strategy, the ligands with strong bonding energy can be replaced by weak ones, which is hard to realize in traditional ligand-exchange processes. The ionic compound-mediated ligand exchange is further utilized to improve the catalytic properties of Au NCs, facilitate the loading of nanoparticles on substrates, and tailor the growth of colloid NCs. These results indicate that the mechanism of switchable bonding energy can be significantly expanded to manipulate the surface property and functionalization of NCs that have applications in a wide range of chemical and biomedical fields.

Abstract:Colloidal zinc oxide (ZnO) nanocrystals generated from the high temperature and nonaqueous approache are attractive for use in solution-processed electrical and optoelectronic devices. However, the as-prepared colloidal ZnO nanocrystals by this approach are generally capped by ligands with long alkyl-chains, which is disadvantage for solution-processed devices due to hindering charge transport. Here we demonstrate an effective ligand exchange process for the colloidal ZnO nanocrystals from the high temperature and nonaqueous approach by using n-butylamine. The ligand exchange process was carefully characterized. The thin films based on colloidal ZnO nanocrystals with ligand exchange exhibited dramatically enhanced UV photoconductivity.

Abstract:Noble metal nanocrystals have been widely used as active components in catalysis and chemical/bio-sensing. The sizes, structures, and shapes of noble metal nanocrystals are crucial to their electronic, optical, and catalytic properties. However, metal nanocrystals tend to lose their structural and morphological properties when they are subjected to thermal and chemical treatment. Therefore, stabilization of noble metal nanostructures remains a challenge. In this feature article, we present our recent efforts on the stabilization of noble metal nanocrystals, i.e., using inorganic and non-metal solids as supports and physical barriers, protecting the nanocrystal surface by a metal coating, and forming alloys with other metals. At the end of this review, we provide our perspectives on the future development of effective methods for nanocrystal stabilization.

Herein we extend this concept to the field of noble metal nanocrystals and report the solution synthesis of metastable face-centered tetragonal Au that has not been discovered before. The successful synthesis relies on the formation of intermetallic AuCu3@Au core-shell structure, where the interface strain stabilizes the metastable fct Au overlayer. Abstract:Nanoparticles have emerged as promising materials for a wide range of applications, including biomedicine, energy, and electronics. However, controlling their surface chemistry is essential to fully harness their potential, as it affects their physicochemical properties, stability, and interactions with biological systems. Surface functionalization is a key process enabling the adaptation of nanoparticle properties for specific applications. While introducing ligands during nanoparticle synthesis may not always be feasible, ligand exchange offers versatility in controlling surface chemistry. However, the direct replacement of negatively charged citrate on gold and silver nanoparticles with positive counterparts often leads to particle aggregation. Here, we present a straightforward one-step ligand exchange method to functionalize citrate-coated gold and silver nanoparticles with cationic ligands. By controlling citrate molecule protonation, we prevent nanoparticle aggregation, enabling successful displacement with positively charged alkanethiol ligands. Dynamic light scattering, zeta potential measurement, transmission electron microscopy alongside theoretical models provide comprehensive insights into the mechanism and dynamics of ligand exchange. Furthermore, we demonstrate the impact of surface functionalization of nanoparticles on the cytotoxic activity of nanoparticles in model cell lines, underscoring the significance of surface chemistry of nanoparticles for their biomedical applications.

Herein, we demonstrate a room temperature ozone treatment to remove poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) on metal NCs. With Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of CO as a probe molecule (CO-FTIR) method, the changes of surface coordination numbers on Pt NCs during ozone treatment and thermal calcination are probed. A room temperature ozone treatment method was used to remove PVP on Pt NCs and PVA on Au NCs. Compared with thermal calcination, ozone treatment can preserve the particle size of Pt and Au. CO-FTIR is used to characterize the evolution of the surface coordination state of Pt NCs during ozone treatment or thermal calcination. Little changes of Pt coordination numbers occur during ozone treatment, while a significant proportion of well-coordinated (WC; terraces) sites develop during thermal calcination. Ozone treatment is advantageous in maintaining the size and surface coordination state of metal NCs during ligand removal for further investigation of structure-property relationship.

Observation of Surface Ligands-Controlled Etching of Palladium Nanocrystals

Abstract:Selective adsorption of ligands on nanocrystal surfaces can affect oxidative etching. Here, we report the etching of palladium nanocrystals imaged using liquid cell transmission electron microscopy. The adsorption of surface ligands (i.e., iron acetylacetonate and its derivatives) and their role as inhibitor molecules on the etching process were investigated. Our observations revealed that the etching was dominated by the interplay between palladium facets and ligands and that the etching exhibited different pathways at different concentrations of ligands. At a low concentration of iron acetylacetonate (0.1 mM), rapid etching primarily at {100} facets led to a concave structure. At a high concentration (1.0 mM), the etch rate was decreased owing to a protective film of iron acetylacetonate on the {100} facets and a round nanoparticle was achieved.
