Abstract:The constrained battery power of mobile devices poses a serious impact on user experience. As an increasingly prevalent type of applications in mobile cloud environments, location-based applications (LBAs) present some inherent limitations concerning energy. For example, the Global Positioning System based positioning mechanism is well-known for its extremely power-hungry attribute. Due to the severity of the issue, considerable researches have focused on energy-efficient locating sensing mechanism in the last a few years. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey of recent work on low-power design of LBAs. An overview of LBAs and different locating sensing technologies used today are introduced. Methods for energy saving with existing locating technologies are investigated. Reductions of location updating queries and simplifications of trajectory data are also mentioned. Moreover, we discuss cloud-based schemes in detail which try to develop new energy-efficient locating technologies by leveraging the cloud capabilities of storage, computation and sharing. Finally, we conclude the survey and discuss the future research directions.

Processing energy cost by CPU is one of the most significant power consuming components in mobile terminals. The emergence of mobile cloud computing (MCC) provides the opportunity to save processing energy through the way of offloading computation tasks to remote server(s). In recent years, considerable research has been devoted to computation offloading to achieve energy efficiency. This paper presents a comprehensive summary of recent work, investigates representative infrastructure of computation offloading, and analyzes key components and future design trends of energy efficient mobile applications.

Abstract:Batteries of modern mobile devices remain severely limited in capacity, which makes energy consumption a key concern for mobile applications, particularly for the computation-intensive video applications. Mobile devices can save energy by offloading computation tasks to the cloud, yet the energy gain must exceed the additional communication cost for cloud migration to be beneficial. The situation is further complicated by real-time video applications that have stringent delay and bandwidth constraints. In this paper, we closely examine the performance and energy efficiency of representative mobile cloud applications under dynamic wireless network channels and state-of-the-art mobile platforms. We identify the unique challenges of and opportunities for offloading real-time video applications and develop a generic model for energy-efficient computation offloading accordingly in this context. We propose a scheduling algorithm that makes adaptive offloading decisions in fine granularity in dynamic wireless network conditions and verify its effectiveness through trace-driven simulations. We further present case studies with advanced mobile platforms and practical applications to demonstrate the superiority of our solution and the substantial gain of our approach over baseline approaches.

Abstract:In today's mobile devices, the battery reservoir remains severely limited in capacity, making power consumption a key concern in the design and implementation of mobile applications. In this paper, we closely examine one widely adopted approach to improve the energy efficiency of mobile applications-adaptively offloading the computation to the remote cloud. In particular, we measure the power consumption of computation offloading for two representative real-world mobile cloud applications under various wireless network conditions and identify the unique features of data transmission for computation offloading. We then formulate the power-aware scheduling problem for computation offloading and present a scheduling algorithm that makes adaptive offloading decisions according to the dynamic network conditions. Simulation results show that our proposed method can achieve better battery performance, which also reveal that computation-intensive and delay-tolerant tasks are more likely to benefit from offloading.

Abstract:ABSTRACTMobile Cloud Computing (MCC) enables smartphones to offload compute-intensive codes and data to clouds or cloudlets for energy conservation. Thus, MCC liberates smartphones from battery shortage and embraces more versatile mobile applications. Most pioneering MCC research work requires a consistent network performance for offloading. However, such consistency is challenged by frequent mobile user movements and unstable network quality, thereby resulting in a suboptimal offloading decision. To embrace network inconsistency, we propose ENDA, a three-tier architecture that leverages user track prediction, realtime network performance and server loads to optimize offloading decisions. On cloud tier, we first design a greedy searching algorithm to predict user track using historical user traces stored in database servers. We then design a cloud-enabled Wi-Fi access point (AP) selection scheme to find the most energy efficient AP for smartphone offloading. We evaluate the performance of ENDA through simulations under a real-world scenario. The results demonstrate that ENDA can generate offloading decisions with optimized energy efficiency, desirable response time, and potential adaptability to a variety of scenarios. ENDA outperforms existing offloading techniques that do not consider user mobility and server workload balance management.

Abstract:In recent years, smartphones have become prevalent. Much attention is being paid to developing and making use of mobile applications that require position information. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a very popular localization technique used by these applications because of its high accuracy. However, GPS incurs an unacceptable energy consumption, which severely limits the use of smartphones and reduces the battery lifetime. Then an urgent requirement for these applications is a localization strategy that not only provides enough accurate position information to meet users' need but also consumes less energy. In this paper, we present an energy-efficient localization strategy for smartphone applications. On one hand, it can dynamically estimate the next localization time point to avoid unnecessary localization operations. On the other hand, it can also automatically select the energy-optimal localization method. We evaluate the strategy through a series of simulations. Experimental results show that it can significantly reduce the localization energy consumption of smartphones while ensuring a good satisfaction degree.

Abstract:In order to fully exploit the high speed broadband multimedia services, prolonging the battery life of user equipment is critical, especially for the current smartphones. In this work, we investigate the problem of designing a content sharing collaborative mobile cloud (CMC) via user cooperation to reduce the energy consumption at terminal side. Given a group of users interested in downloading the same content from an operator, a grouping and scheduling based algorithm is proposed in order to select the proper data receiver in each scheduling time. The objective of the presented algorithm is to obtain energy efficiency as well as user fairness among the members of CMC. The proposed scheme can take both base station and terminal aspects into consideration and it is shown that the significant energy saving performance can be achieved without scarifying and drowning the battery of any terminal.

Abstract:The emergence of mobile cloud computing (MCC) indicates that increasingly abundant applications are available, thus deeming energy problems even more significant. To achieve energy optimization in mobile systems, power consumption involved with each component or application need to be estimated prior to execution. In this paper, we present a survey on the universal energy estimation model for mobile devices. Additionally, due to the significance of wireless network interface card (WNIC) in the power use of mobile devices, considerable researches have been devoted to a low-power design of the WNIC (i.e., Cellular and WiFi). These efforts have allowed us to provide a comprehensive summary of recent work on transmission energy savings. Finally, we conclude the survey and discuss the future research directions.

Abstract:With the rapid development of mobile Internet,the applications of mobile devices have penetrated into all aspects of people's work and life.In order to meet the requirements of complex mobile applications for mobile devices,such as battery capacity,computing power storage capacity,security and privacy,mobile cloud computing as a combination of mobile Internet and cloud computing has been in a rapid development in recent years,brought out the new information service and application modes,which has attracted great attentions from both industry and academia.Mobile cloud computing inherits the advantages of cloud computing,such as dynamic deployment,resource scalability,multiple users sharing and multiple services integration.It provides an effective way to empower the resource shortage of mobile devices.However,the inherent problems such as dynamic mobility,limited battery capacity and security threats from unauthorized access and privacy breach introduce many new challenges to the research of mobile cloud computing.Firstly,based on the fundamental research problems in mobile cloud computing,we describe the research progress of this area,mainly including the computation migration technologies,cloudbased location service,energy-saving technologies for mobile device,data security and privacy protection.Then we give an in-depth analysis for the typical applications of mobile cloud computing,such as mobile cloud storage,cloudlet,group intelligence service and mobile cloud gaming,and finally prospect the research trend from the aspects of function enhancement,quality of service assurance,security and availability.

Abstract:Currently, mobile applications, such as interactive gaming, virtual reality, and natural language processing, are becoming more computational intensive, but the computing capacity of mobile devices is limited. An effective way to solve this problem is offloading the tasks to nearby cloudlets, which are some small mobile data centers deployed in wireless metropolitan area network (WMAN). and consume a large amount of energy. Excessive energy consumption brings about some negative effects, including increased carbon dioxide emissions, aggravating the greenhouse effect, etc. In view of this challenge, we propose an energy-aware virtual machine (VM) scheduling method for cloudlets in WMAN. Technically, an optimization model is designed to formalize our problem. Then, based on VM Live Migration Technology, a corresponding energy saving VM scheduling method abbreviated as MFEA is proposed to determine which VMs should be migrated and where they should be migrated. Finally, experimental data demonstrate that the proposed method is effective.
Energy-efficient on-demand streaming in mobile cellular networks

Abstract:With the rapid development of wireless access technologies and mobile terminals (eg tablet, smartphone), end users are able to enjoy abundant applications with heavy workload on mobile platforms from anywhere at anytime. However, due to limited terminal size and portable requirement, mobile devices are difficult to provide sufficient computation and battery capacity, hence making the Quality of Experience (QoE) of mobile platform applications hard to guarantee [1].Among the different sorts of heavy-workload applications, media streaming is a representative one [2]. Since media content needs to be transmitted, decoded and played on mobile devices, the energy of both wireless network interface, processor and screen is cost during the entire process. Recent literature has shown that transmission costs up to 50% of total energy on average [3, 4]. In the literature, media content encoding/decoding [5, 6] or traffic shaping [7, 8] are usually employed to reduce transmission energy cost. The former one needs to modify the media encoding/decoding pattern to reduce the amount of transmission or change the traffic pattern in a more energy-efficient way, while the latter one is transparent to both source and destination and is more flexible to multiple video/audio encoding/decoding formats.

Abstract:On the way toward enabling efficient content distribution, reducing energy consumption and prolonging battery life of mobile equipment, an emerging paradigm, i.e., mobile cloud, which is based on content distribution, was proposed. As a mobile platform that is oriented toward content distribution, mobile cloud is also foreseen as an energy-efficient solution for future wireless networks. The benefits of using CMC for content distribution or distributed computing from social networking perspectives have been studied earlier. In this article, we first present the concepts of CMC and then discuss the energy-efficiency benefits from the system-level point-of-view as well as open challenges in designing a green CMC. Moreover, we investigate the problem of forming mobile clouds for the purpose of content distribution and energy-efficiency. Specifically, given a group of users interested in downloading the same content from an operator, an energy-aware based user selection and scheduling algorithm is proposed. Simulation examples show that a significant energy-saving performance can be achieved without depleting the battery of any user equipment by the proposed scheme. Also, the research potential is discussed in the context of CMC.

Abstract:Recent work shows that offloading a mobile application from mobile devices to cloud servers can significantly reduce the energy consumption of mobile devices, thus extending the lifetime of mobile devices. However, previous work only considers the energy saving of mobile devices while ignoring the execution delay of mobile applications. To reduce the energy consumption of mobile devices, one may offload as many mobile applications as possible. However, offloading to cloud servers may incur a large execution delay because of the waiting time at the servers or the communication delay from the mobile devices to the servers. Thus, to balance the tradeoff between energy consumption and execution delay of mobile applications, it is necessary to determine whether the mobile application should be offloaded to the cloud server or run locally at the mobile devices. In this paper, we first formulate a joint optimization problem, which minimizes both the energy consumption at the mobile devices and the execution delay of mobile applications. We prove that the proposed problem is NP-hard. For a special case with unlimited residual energy at the mobile device and the same amount of resources required by each mobile application, we present a polynomial-time optimal solution. We also propose an efficient heuristic algorithm to solve the general case of the problem. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
Heterogeneous Grid Computing for Energy Constrained Mobile Device

Abstract:There is a lot of existing research focusing on low power mobile computing, but only a fraction of it takes systematic view toward the whole system. Our research is motivated by two important facts: the first is that processor, SDRAM and chipset consume more than 60% energy on mobile device, and the second is that mobile device usually moves inside a heterogeneous "computer community" that are interconnected by heterogeneous network. Targeting on low power mobile computing, we propose heterogeneous grid computing that enables mobile device to migrate work load to other computers, which have far more resources and are powered by AC. The off-loading can reduce majority of local computation related energy consumption. Meanwhile, since most mobile applications have asymmetric UI, the energy consumption on wireless interface will not be significantly increased. In order to support the proposed heterogeneous grid computing, we develop an UPnP based architecture that leverages a lot of industry standard. Three applications are developed on our tested: multimedia streaming, 3D game and Text to Speech. Experiments show that battery life time is radically prolonged.

Abstract:Mobile crowd sensing enables large-scale sensing of the physical world at low cost by leveraging the available sensors on the mobile phones. One of the key factors for the success of mobile crowd sensing is uploading the sensing data to the cloud promptly. Traditional data uploading strategies leveraging whenever available networks may incur extra data cost, impact phone performance,, drain battery power significantly. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient large data uploading framework using only WiFi network. Specifically, we propose to upload data at WiFi Ready Conditions (WRCs), when the WiFi network is connected, no front-end applications are using it. By forecasting the WRCs that will be encountered in a data uploading task, our framework intelligently selects optimal WRCs to minimize the overall energy consumption. Our evaluation results with the Device Analyzer Dataset show that the proposed method can effectively upload large data while consuming 30% less energy than the greedy-based baseline method.

Abstract:The rapidly-increasing high data rate wireless networks and the fast-growing smartphone techniques are continually changing our daily behaviors and coloring our life. However, in order to fully experience the high rate broadband multimedia services, prolonging the battery life of user equipment is critical for the mobile users, especially for the smartphone users. In this work, the problem of offloading the cellular data via a collaborative mobile cloud in an energy efficient manner is investigated. The CMC is formed by a group of users interested in downloading the same content from the operator. Through Device-to-Device communications, the users inside CMC are able to cooperate during downloading procedure and offload data from Base Station for other CMC members. When considering wireless power transfer and MIMO wireless channel, an efficient algorithm is presented to address how to optimally schedule the data offloading and radio resources to obtain the energy efficiency as well as fairness among mobile users. Specifically, the proposed framework takes energy saving maximization, Quality of Service (QoS) requirement as well as user fairness into consideration. Performance evaluations demonstrate that significant energy saving gain can be achieved by the proposed data offloading scheme.

Abstract:In cellular networks, it is important to conserve energy while at the same time satisfying different user performance requirements. In this paper, we first propose a comprehensive metric to capture the user performance cost due to task delay, deadline violation, different application profiles, and user preferences. We prove that finding the energy-optimal scheduling solution while meeting the requirements on the performance cost is NP-hard. Then, we design an adaptive online scheduling algorithm PerES to minimize the total energy cost on data transmissions subject to user performance constraints. We prove that PerES can make the energy consumption arbitrarily close to that of the optimal scheduling solution. Further, we develop offline algorithms to serve as the evaluation benchmark for PerES. The evaluation results demonstrate that PerES achieves average 2.5 times faster convergence speed compared to state-of-art static methods, and also higher performance than peers under various test conditions. Using 821 million traffic flows collected from a commercial cellular carrier, we verify our scheme could achieve on average 32-56 percent energy savings over the total transmission energy with different levels of user experience.

Abstract:Smartphone devices are widely used in our daily lives. However, these devices exhibit limitations, such as short battery lifetime, limited computation power, small memory size and unpredictable network connectivity. Therefore, numerous solutions have been proposed to mitigate these limitations and extend the battery lifetime with the use of the offloading technique. In this paper, a novel framework is proposed to offload intensive computation tasks from the mobile device to the cloud. This framework uses an optimization model to determine the offloading decision dynamically based on four main parameters, namely, energy consumption, CPU utilization, execution time, and memory usage. In addition, a new security layer is provided to protect the transferred data in the cloud from any attack. The experimental results showed that the framework can select a suitable offloading decision for different types of mobile application tasks while achieving significant performance improvement. Moreover, different from previous techniques, the framework can protect application data from any threat.

Abstract:Mobile applications are advancing toward higher network and compute requirements, which are similar to the requirements of server applications. Users prefer to perform their tasks on the go from mobile devices instead of stationary desktop and server systems. Modern mobile applications limit mobile battery times as charging is lost quickly due to high processing and data demands. Resources other than energy are also limited in mobile devices (memory, CPU millions of instructions per second, etc.).Mobile edge computing (MEC) technologies facilitate resource-scarcemobile devices to enhance their capabilities and execute data/computeintensive applications while collaborating with resource-rich network servers to enable ubiquitous computing. On the other hand, mobile cloud computing provides higher resources for applications that have low response requirements (noninteractive applications). Abstract:Achieving long battery lives or even self sustainability has been a long standing challenge for designing mobile devices. This paper presents a novel solution that seamlessly integrates two technologies, mobile cloud computing and microwave power transfer (MPT), to enable computation in passive low-complexity devices such as sensors and wearable computing devices. Specifically, considering a single-user system, a base station (BS) either transfers power to or offloads computation from a mobile to the cloud; the mobile uses harvested energy to compute given data either locally or by offloading. A framework for energy efficient computing is proposed that comprises a set of policies for controlling CPU cycles for the mode of local computing, time division between MPT and offloading for the other mode of offloading, and mode selection. Given the CPU-cycle statistics information and channel state information (CSI), the policies aim at maximizing the probability of successfully computing given data, called computing probability, under the energy harvesting and deadline constraints. The policy optimization is translated into the equivalent problems of minimizing the mobile energy consumption for local computing and maximizing the mobile energy savings for offloading which are solved using convex optimization theory. The structures of the resultant policies are characterized in closed form. Furthermore, given non-causal CSI, the said analytical framework is further developed to support computation load allocation over multiple channel realizations, which further increases the computing probability. Last, simulation demonstrates the feasibility of wirelessly powered mobile cloud computing and the gain of its optimal control.
