Abstract:Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are interesting photocatalysts for solar fuel production and environmental pollution control. However, the poor stability and recombination probability of photogenerated electron-hole pairs prevented the practical applications of QDs based photocatalysts. Herein we demonstrated that the incorporation of amorphous titania (TiO2) coatings with CuInS2/ZnS-TiO2 heterostructures (CIS/ZnS-TiO2 gel) can markedly boost photocatalytic performance and stability for Cr (VI) reduction. The promoted photocatalytic activity of CIS/ZnS-TiO2 gel is associated with the enhanced light absorption and distinctive heterojunction imposed by the integration of CIS/ZnS-TiO2 with amorphous TiO2 coatings, which drastically speed the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Moreover, the physical protection and photo corrosion-inhibition functions (receptors of photogenerated holes from CIS/ZnS QDs) arised from the amorphous TiO2 coatings were mainly responsible for the promoted photo stability of CIS/ZnS-TiO2 gel. Our CIS/ZnS-TiO2 gel retained over 90% of its initial activity under cycle tests, while the bared CIS/ZnS-TiO2 showed a distinct reduction (approximately 35%) of its original efficiency due to the photocorrosion and weight-loss. Obviously, the incorporation of amorphous TiO2 along with its bulk appearance of gel realized the enhanced photocatalytic performance with a favorable cycling stability. Hybrid Overlayer of Defective Ni-MOF and NiO Nanoparticles toward Efficient TiO2/CdS Type-II Heterojunction

Abstract:The severe photocorrosion of cadmium sulfide (CdS) restricts its practical application for solar hydrogen production. Although remarkable progress has been achieved with an overlayer strategy for isolating the CdS surface, the lifetime of CdS-based photoanodes is still far from the actual requirements. Herein, a hybrid overlayer of defective Ni-MOF and NiO nanoparticles has been developed through the chemical bath deposition method with postannealing. This hybrid overlayer of Ni-MOF-d is coated on the surface of the TiO2/CdS type-II heterojunction. The composite photoanode exhibits a photocurrent density of 4.41 mA cm-2 at 1.23 VRHE, which is 3.47- and 1.32-fold that of CdS and TiO2/CdS, respectively. The Ni-MOF-d overlayer gives rise to a negative shift of the onset potential by 59.51 mV. After a long-term stability test of 11 h, a photocurrent retention of 70% is observed, which is among the most robust CdS-based photoanodes. The kinetics studies reveal that the performance improvements can be attributed to the multiple functions of the Ni-MOF-d hybrid overlayer, including isolating the CdS surface from the electrolyte, cocatalyzing the electrode oxidation processes, passivating the surface defect states of CdS, and facilitating the charge injection from the photoanode to the electrolyte.
Oxidation Cocatalyst/s-Scheme Junction Cooperatively Assists Photocatalytic H2 Production in Ternary Hybrid: the Case of PdO@TiO2-Cu2O

Abstract:Solar-driven photocatalytic hydrogen production from water splitting holds significant potential in addressing the energy crisis and environmental pollution. However, rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers and insufficient surface catalytic reaction kinetics hinder the photocatalytic process. Constructing the catalytic systems with multi-channel charge-separation can effectively alleviate those issues. In this work, ternary PdO@TiO2-Cu2O composites have been synthesized through precursor calcination and low-temperature reduction, where PdO and Cu2O nanoparticles couple with the TiO2 nanorods. Comparing to single TiO2, binary PdO@TiO2 and TiO2-Cu2O, the PdO@TiO2-Cu2O hybrid exhibits enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production performance (5831 mu mol g(-1)h(-1)), with a hydrogen production rate more than three times that of single TiO2. Based on the band structures of TiO2 and Cu2O, along with the photochemical/electrochemical, in-situ EPR, Photoluminescence (PL) tests, and work function calculations, the formation of an S-scheme heterojunction at the TiO2-Cu2O interface under light illumination facilitates the recombination of electrons in the conduction band (CB) of TiO2 with holes in the valence band (VB) of Cu2O. In this regard, the established built-in electric field significantly accelerates the transfer of photogenerated charges while preserving their respective strong oxidation and reduction capabilities. Meanwhile, the introduction of PdO enriches the holes and further enhances the rate of charge separation. This S-scheme heterojunction with directional charge transfer and oxidation cocatalyst collectively form multi-channels of charge separation, optimizing charge migration and enabling efficient hydrogen production, thus improving the photocatalytic capability of pristine TiO2. This study provides a rational approach to construct efficient S-scheme heterojunction/oxidation cocatalyst multi-component catalytic systems for water splitting into hydrogen.

Abstract:Designing surface phase is an efficient strategy to facilitate charge separation and photocatalytic H2-evolution performance. In this work, CoS cocatalysts were intimately anchored on Cd0.5Zn0.5S (denoted as CZS) photocatalyst via in-situ precipitate transformation in S2−/SO32− solution with cobaltous phosphate (CoPi) as a precursor, meanwhile, S2− ions were adsorbed on the CZS to form a sulfur-rich surface (denoted as CZS-S). The photocatalytic H2-evolution rate of CoS/CZS-S is 2.02 mmol·g−1·h−1 in 0.1 M Na2S/Na2SO3 sacrificial agent system. In addition, CoS/CZS-S exhibits excellent stability in both Na2S/Na2SO3 and lactic acid system. The theoretical calculations (DFT) and experimental results reveal that amorphous CoS can work as a highly effective cocatalyst for H2 evolution reaction and the intimate contact between CZS and CoS facilitates the photoelectrons transfer from CZS to CoS. The adsorbed S2− ions mainly work as effective hole acceptors. As a result of the synergism of CoS and adsorbed S2− ions, the boosted separation and immigration of photoelectrons and photoholes and high photocatalytic H2-evolution performance of CoS/CZS-S are realized. The present work highlights simultaneous reinforcing reduction and oxidation half-reaction dynamics via a facile and economic surface strategy to achieve efficient solar H2-evolution from H2O splitting.
Improvement of charge-transfer kinetics via MXene and cobalt containing polyoxometalate loading on CdS for photocatalytic hydrogen production

Abstract:Hydrogen is a renewable and clean energy, and photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen evolution technology is a promising technical means to solve the development problem. In this study, the ternary composite Co 8 POM@MXene-CdS hybrid catalyst was constructed and used for photocatalytic hydrogen production. Under the condition of AM 1.5G simulated sunlight, the photocatalytic H 2 evolution rate of the ternary composite was 8.13 mmol g −1 h −1 , which was more than 25 times higher than that of the bare CdS. By means of synchronous illumination X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (SI-XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it was proved that the loading of MXene and Co 8 POM improved the photogenerated carrier separation and immigration efficiency on CdS. The photogenerated electrons transfer from CdS to MXene. Co 8 POM containing the {Co 4 O 3 } quasi-cubane, as an oxidation co-catalyst, accepts photogenerated holes from CdS to catalyze the oxidation reaction of TEOA, which improves the photocatalytic hydrogen production activity and the stability of CdS.

Abstract:The rapid recombination of photo-generated electron-hole pairs, insufficient active sites, and strong photocorrosion have considerably restricted the practical application of CdS in photocatalytic fields. Herein, we designed and constructed a 2D/2D/2D layered heterojunction photocatalyst with cascaded 2D coupling interfaces. Experiments using electron spin resonance spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, and in-situ irradiation X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were conducted to confirm the 2D layered CdS/WO3 step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunctions and CdS/MX ohmic junctions. Impressively, it was found that the strong interfacial electric fields in the S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts could effectively promote spatially directional charge separation and transport between CdS and WO3 nanosheets. In addition, 2D Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets with a smaller work function and excellent metal conductivity when used as a co-catalyst could build ohmic junctions with CdS nanosheets, thus providing a greater number of electron transfer pathways and hydrogen evolution sites. Results showed that the highest visible-light hydrogen evolution rate of the optimized MX-CdS/WO3 layered multi-heterostructures could reach as high as 27.5 mmol/g/h, which was 11.0 times higher than that of pure CdS nanosheets. Notably, the apparent quantum efficiency reached 12.0% at 450 nm. It is hoped that this study offers a reliable approach for developing multifunctional photocatalysts by integrating S-scheme and ohmic-junction built-in electric fields and rationally designing a 2D/2D interface for efficient light-to-hydrogen fuel production.

Abstract:Developing non-noble-metal cocatalysts is essential for the large-scale implementation of solar-driven H-2 production technology, but still remains a great challenge. In this work, Ti3C2Tx MXene coupled CdS nanostructures are fabricated via one-step gamma-ray radiation-induced reduction in ambient conditions. By subsequent alkaline treatment, a novel cocatalyst of carbon supported amorphous TiO2 nanosheets (denoted as aTiO(2)-C) is derived from Ti(3)C(2)Tx/CdS to form aTiO(2)-C/CdS nanocomposites. The prepared aTiO(2)-C/CdS nanocomposites with cyclability achieve a H-2 evolution rate of 1.48 mmol.g(-1).h(-1) under visible-light illumination, which is 6.4 and 7.0 times greater than that of pristine Ti3C2Tx/CdS and P-CdS, respectively. The oxygen vacancies in aTiO(2)-C cocatalysts are revealed to act as electron trapping sites to facilitate the transfer of photoexcited electrons and boost photoactivity. Further, the electronic interaction between CdS and aTiO(2)-C prevents Cd2+ from leaching and thus enhances photostability. The results of this work may guide the rational design of viable cost-effective cocatalysts in solar-to-chemical energy conversion and beyond.

Abstract:During the photocatalytic production of hydrogen gas, close interface with a catalyst is very important. We designed a noble-metal-free photocatalytic system that is spatially separated to produce hydrogen by high frequency visible light. We used a new type of a catalyst consisting of hollow core-shell CdS@TiO2/Ni2P structures prepared using sacrificial template method. Photocatalytic decomposition of water was tested using this catalyst. Hydrogen production yield using 420 nm light was 14.80 mmol/g after 2.5 h and using Xe lamp with AM1.5G filter was 34.78 mmol/g after 2.5 h. Hollow core shell CdS@TiO2/Ni2P particles were more stable than hollow core shell CdS@TiO2/Pt structures because TiO2 protected CdS from photo-corrosion. Combination of CdS and Ni2P increased absorption range of TiO2 at 720 nm. Holes and electrons produced during the photo-reaction can migrate to the CdS on the inside and to the Ni2P on the outside of the TiO2 protective coating. Such design exposes more surface, thus, increases hydrogen production.

Abstract:TiO2/CdS porous hollow microspheres have been one-pot rapidly synthesized by a salt-assisted aerosol decomposition method, and exhibit an excellent photocatalytic activity of 996 μmol h(-1) (50 mg photocatalysts with loading Ru co-catalyst) for hydrogen evolution from aqueous solutions containing sacrificial reagents (SO3(2-) and S(2-)) under visible light (λ ≥ 420 nm). Its high photocatalytic performance is attributed to the surface morphology, crystallinity and heterostructures. The present facile method can be extended to fabricate other heterostructures consisting of oxides or sulfides.

Abstract:A new quaternary crystalline catalyst was obtained by a mixed hydrothermal method of integrating inorganic semiconductors, titanium oxide cluster (TOC) and molecular redox centers orderly into metal organic framework (MOF) materials. It shows a hydrogen production rate 3711.53 μmol g−1 h−1 under visible light irradiation, exceeds most of the same type of catalyst reported in recent years, and a favorable stability with. The excellent performance of the CdS/TOC/UiO‐67‐bpy/Co composites due to efficient promotion of photo‐induced carrier separation and migration, and offering abundant active sites for generating hydrogen. This work will help to guide the preparation of new efficient and stable photocatalysts and promote the effective conversion of solar energy to chemical energy. Through a new design strategy, we obtain an effective quaternary photocatalyst that shows an efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production performance up to 3711.53 μmol g−1 h−1 and good cycle stability.

Abstract:CdS nanoparticles were in situ deposited on TiO2 nanosheets and nanorods under hydrothermal conditions, respectively. The effect of CdS–TiO2 interface structure on hydrogen production activity was mainly investigated under visible light irradiation. The results showed that the TiO2 nanosheet-based CdS/TiO2 showed a higher activity and a higher cyclability than the nanorod-based sample due to the stronger interaction of CdS with the (001) facets of TiO2 than with the (101) facets. It was proposed that the strong interaction between CdS nanoparticles and TiO2 nanosheets effectively refrains the recombination of electrons and holes.

Abstract:On the basis of the inherent property limitations of commercial P25-TiO 2 , many surface interface modification methods have attracted substantial attention for further improving the photocatalytic properties. However, current strategies for designing and modifying efficient photocatalysts (which exhibit complicated manufacturing processes and harsh conditions) are not efficient for production that is low cost, is nontoxic, and exhibits good stability; and therefore restrict practical applications. Herein, a facile and reliable method is reported for in situ amine-containing silane coupling agent functionalization of commercial P25-TiO 2 by covalent surface modification for constructing a highly efficient photocatalyst. As a consequence, a high efficiency of H 2 evolution was achieved for TiO 2 -SDA with 0.95 mmol h −1 g −1 (AQE ∼45.6% at 365 nm) under solar light irradiation without a co-catalyst. The amination modification broadens the light absorption range of the photocatalyst, inhibits the binding of photogenerated carriers, and improves the photocatalytic efficiency; which was verified by photochemical properties and DFT theoretical calculations. This covalent modification method ensures the stability of the photocatalytic reaction. This work provides an approach for molecularly modified photocatalysts to improve photocatalytic performance by covalently modifying small molecules containing amine groups on the photocatalyst surface.

Abstract:The TiO2/Mn0.2Cd0.8S hollow heterojunction with Mn/Cd bimetallic synergy is prepared via a continuous chemical-hydrothermal-etching method. There, the TiO2 shell and Mn0.2Cd0.8S nanoparticles were deposited by continuous chemical-hydrothermal method on the surface of SiO2 template, and subsequently the SiO2 template was etched via a chemical method. Evaluated by HER, the as-prepared TiO2/Mn0.2Cd0.8S hollow heterojunction exhibits an obvious photocatalytic enhancement to about ~5822.94 μmol/g∙h(~40 folds of TiO2, ~7 folds of Mn0.2Cd0.8S), which can be mainly ascribed to that, the narrow band gap of Mn0.2Cd0.8S can increase the visible light energy utilization, the TiO2/Mn0.2Cd0.8S heterojunction and Mn/Cd bimetallic synergy can separate/transfer the photo-generated charge carriers efficiently, and the sufficient specific surface areas and actives from 3D hollow structure can promote the charge carrier diffusing into water quickly for achieving H2 generation. Additionally, the hollow 3D structure can provide a decent physical-chemical stability to improve the photocatalytic stability.

Abstract:Heterojunction photocatalysts are widely adopted for efficient water splitting, but ion migration can seriously threaten the stability of heterojunctions, as with the well-known low stability of CdS-Cu2‒xS due to intrinsic Cu+ ion migration. Here, we utilize Cu+ migration to design a stratified CdS-Cu2‒xS/MoS2 photocatalyst, in which Cu(I)@MoS2 (Cu(I)-intercalated within the MoS2 basal plane) is created by Cu+ migration and intercalation to the adjacent MoS2 surface. The epitaxial vertical growth of CuI@MoS2 nanosheets on the surface of one-dimensional core-shell CdS-Cu2‒xS nanorods forms catalytic and protective layers to simultaneously enhance catalytic activity and stability. Charge transfer is verified by kinetics measurements with femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy and direct mapping of the surface charge distribution with a scanning ion conductance microscope. This design strategy demonstrates the potential of utilizing hybridized surface layers as effective catalytic and protective interfaces for photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Abstract:Rational design and synthesis of a unique heterojunction photocatalyst structure is an important strategy to enhance its performance and structural stability. Herein, Co9S8/MnCdS/Co3O4 photocatalysts with double S-scheme heterojunctions were successfully prepared by coupling Co9S8 and Co3O4 sheet structures with n-type MnCdS nanoparticles through a simple solvothermal and mechanical mixing method. The construction of the dual S-scheme heterostructure offers the possibility to expand the light absorption range, extend the carrier lifetime and maximise the redox capacity. In addition, the mechanism of charge transfer and the reason for the improvement of photocatalytic activity were explored through photoelectrochemical characterization. The lamellar structures of Co9S8 and Co3O4 not only provide excellent dispersion and slow down the agglomeration of MnCdS nanoparticles, but also promote charge transfer, which improves the photocatalytic hydrogen production effect. Under simulated solar irradiation, the evolution rate of H2 after 5 h was as high as 46.44 μmol, which was 3.49 and 1.49 times higher than those of pristine MnCdS and MnCdS/Co3O4, respectively. Meanwhile, it has good stability under 20 h irradiation. This work demonstrates a novel idea for the rational design of double S-scheme photocatalysts with efficient space separation.
Preparation of CdS/Cs0.68Ti1.83O4 heterojunction for promoted photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

Abstract:Perovskites have attracted significant interest in the field of photocatalysis due to their excellent stability, rich crystal chemistry, and high catalytic activities. However, they usually require the presence of noble metal cocatalysts as their band gaps are typically greater than 3.0 eV. In this study, a layered titanate with lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH)-type structure (Cs0.68Ti1.83O4) was synthesized via solid state reaction, followed by the introduction of CdS through an impregnation method, to produce a composite heterostructure. The CdS/Cs0.68Ti1.83O4 composite displayed superior photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performances without noble metal cocatalyst. Possessing an extended visible light response and facilitating charge carrier migration, the CdS-50%-Cs0.68Ti1.83O4 composite exhibited photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of 120.0 μmol/h and quantum efficiency of 3.41% under 400 nm light irradiation. Furthermore, a double-charge transfer mechanism was proposed for the CdS/Cs0.68Ti1.83O4 composite based on the results from UV–vis/DRS, XPS, and Mott-Schottky characterizations.

Abstract:S-scheme heterojunctions demonstrate exceptional hydrogen evolution property due to their unique charge transfer mechanism and robust redox potential. In this study, oxygen-deficient titanium dioxide (TiO2-x) 2-x ) was prepared with a band gap narrowed from 3.2 eV to 2.8 eV. Meanwhile, TiO2-x 2-x exhibits oxygen vacancy concentration-dependent hydrogen evolution rate, in which TiO2-x-2 2-x-2 with appropriate oxygen vacancy concentration displays significantly higher H2 2 evolution efficiency than matrix TiO2. 2 . Subsequently, Ni3(HITP)2/TiO2-x 3 (HITP) 2 /TiO 2-x was synthesized using mechano-solvothermal approach. The experiments show that the material possesses excellent catalytic activity and stability and can effectively produce hydrogen by photocatalytic water splitting after undergoing five cycles. The hydrogen evolution rate of 3 wt% Ni3(HITP)2/TiO2-x-2 3 (HITP) 2 /TiO 2-x-2 reaches 5.804 mmol/g/ h, exhibiting a 6.64-fold increase compared to TiO2. 2 . The proposed enhanced photocatalytic capacity of Ni3(HITP)2/TiO2-x-2 3 (HITP) 2 /TiO 2-x-2 can be ascribed to the creation of S-scheme heterojunctions, Ni3(HITP) 3 (HITP) 2 ' s full-spectrum light absorption ability, excellent conductivity, and a large specific surface area. In support, in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and surface photovoltage spectroscopy, along with radical capture experiments confirmed the charge transport mechanism of Ni3(HITP)2/TiO2-x 3 (HITP) 2 /TiO 2-x following the S-scheme heterojunction. In general, this study offers significant contributions to the understanding of the cooperative application of conductive MOFs and defect engineering in photocatalysis.
