Abstract:We propose a spectral efficient radio over wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) system by combining optical polarization division multiplexing (PDM) and wireless multiple input multiple output (MIMO) spatial multiplexing techniques. In our experiment, a training-based zero forcing (ZF) channel estimation algorithm is designed to compensate the polarization rotation and wireless multipath fading. A 797 Mb/s net data rate QPSK-OFDM signal with error free (<1 × 10(5)) performance and a 1.59 Gb/s net data rate 16QAM-OFDM signal with BER performance of 1.2 × 10(2) are achieved after transmission of 22.8 km single mode fiber followed by 3 m and 1 m air distances, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a simple, cost-effective hybrid gigabit fiber-wireless system for in-building wireless access. Simplicity and cost-effectiveness are achieved in all parts of the system by utilizing direct laser modulation, optical frequency up-conversion, combined single mode/multimode fiber transmission and envelope detection. Error-free transmission of 2-Gbps data in 60-GHz band over a composite channel including 10-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF)/1-km multimode fiber (MMF) and 6.5-m air transmission was successfully achieved. Abstract:This paper presents a simple 2 x 2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) 60-GHz radio-over-fiber system. Due to the proposed specific frequency arrangement of driving signals, each optical transmitter requires only a single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator with 3-dB bandwidth of less than 35 GHz. This arrangement of frequencies can increase the tolerance of optical signals to dispersion-induced RF fading, thereby extending fiber transmission distance. Unfortunately, this scheme leads to signal-to-signal beating interference (SSBI), which can deteriorate system performance. Thus, we employed a 2 x 2 MIMO scheme to enhance data capacity by combining two data streams and two corresponding SSBIs prior to signal demodulation. We also developed a novel iterative equalization technique to mitigate SSBI in the MIMO system. The proposed system achieved a maximum capacity of 55.9-Gb/s in the transmission of 7-GHz orthogonal frequency division multiplexing signals over 12-km fiber and 3.5-m air transmission using a bit-loading algorithm.

Seamless translation of two orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals on dual optical polarization states into wireless MIMO transmission at 795.5 Mbit/s net data rate is enabled by using digital training-based channel estimation. Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated a seamlessly integrated fiber-wireless system that delivers multichannel 120-Gb/s data through 80-km fiber and 2-m 2 x 2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless link at 92-GHz W-band adopting polarization division multiplexing quadrature phase shift keying (PDM-QPSK) modulation. The three-channel 3 x 40-Gb/s optical PDM-QPSK signals with 12.5-GHz channel spacing are simultaneously upconverted to 92-GHz wireless carrier by optical polarization-diversity heterodyne beating and then transmitted and received by two pairs of transmitter and receiver antennas, which form a full 2 x 2 MIMO wireless link. At the wireless receiver, a two-stage analog and digital downconversion is performed. Polarization and wireless 2 x 2 MIMO demultiplexing are realized by constant modulus algorithm based on digital signal processing. The bit-error ratio performance for the 120-Gb/s PDM-QPSK signal is measured after 80-km single-mode fiber-28 and 2-m wireless transmission.

Abstract:This paper proposes a 2x2 MIMO OFDM Radio-over-Fiber scheme based on optical subcarrier multiplexing and 60-GHz MIMO wireless transmission. We also schematically investigated the principle of optical subcarrier multiplexing, which is based on a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP-MZM). In our simulation result, combining two MIMO OFDM signals to drive DP-MZM gives rise to the PAPR augmentation of less than 0.4 dB, which mitigates nonlinear distortion. Moreover, we applied a Levin-Campello bit-loading algorithm to compensate for the uneven frequency responses in the V-band. The resulting system achieves OFDM signal rates of 61.5-Gbits/s with BER of 10(-3) over 25-km SMF transmission followed by 3-m wireless transmission. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A hybrid fiber-wireless in-home network is proposed to support high-speed multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems operating at millimeter wave (mm-wave) band by employing optical heterodyne (OH) and polarization multiplexing (PolMux). OH enables the optical generation of mm-wave signals without the intrinsic frequency limitation of electrical local oscillators. Moreover, the frequency agility can be provided by tuning the optical wavelength in an OH system. PolMux explores two orthogonal polarizations at the same optical wavelength to satisfy the wireless MIMO service with low additional cost. Enabled by these techniques, the fiber transmission (1 km) and wireless delivery (1 m) of 61.3-Gbps data at 40-GHz mm-wave are successfully demonstrated. To the best of our knowledge, a record spectral efficiency of 6.82 bit/s/Hz is achieved in such kind of systems.

Abstract:This work experimentally demonstrates the efficacy of the 2 x 2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique for capacity improvement of a 60-GHz radio-over-fiber (RoF) system employing single-carrier modulation format. We employ frequency domain equalization (FDE) to estimate the channel response, including frequency response of the 60 GHz RoF system and the MIMO wireless channel. Using FDE and MIMO techniques, we experimentally demonstrate the doubling the of wireless data capacity of a 60 GHz RoF system to 27.15 Gb/s using 16-QAM modulation format, with transmission over 25 km of standard single-mode fiber and 3 m wireless distance. Abstract:Multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) technique for wireless communications is extensively used these days, especially to increase the spectral efficiency of new wireless communication systems like LTE, WiMAX, etc. MIMO in combination with robust modulation techniques like orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) provides a good solution for high data rate wireless links. In this paper, the performance of MIMO for a 60 GHz OFDM radio over fiber link is analyzed. System performance of the MIMO system for different antenna spacing is also studied. Using the optimum system parameters, a MIMO OFDM wireless link of up to 51 Gb/s was successfully demonstrated at 60 GHz in a bandwidth of <7 GHz, with a wireless transmission distance of up to 4 m and optical fiber transmission of 1 km. To our knowledge this is the highest data rate demonstrated in the 7 GHz band of 60 GHz.

Abstract:This article proposes and experimentally demonstrates a radio-over-fiber system employing single-sideband single-carrier (SSB-SC) modulation at 60 GHz. SSB-SC modulation has a lower peak-to-average-power ratio than orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) modulation; therefore, the SSB-SC signals provide superior nonlinear tolerance, compared to OFDM signals. Moreover, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology was used extensively to enhance spectral efficiency. A least-mean-square-based equalizer was implemented, including MIMO channel estimation, frequency response equalization, and I/Q imbalance compensation to recover the MIMO signals. Thus, using 2×2 MIMO technology and 64-QAM SSB-SC signals, we achieved the highest data rate of 84 Gbps with 12 bit/s/Hz spectral efficiency using the 7-GHz license-free band at 60 GHz.

Abstract:We demonstrate a 58.74-Gb/s $V$ -band orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) radio-over-fiber (RoF) system employing the $2\times 2$ multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) technology and power detector for down-conversion for the first time. Additional radio frequency (RF) tone is generated and transmitted from central station to replace the local oscillator at wireless receiver for power detector down-conversion. To enhance spectrum efficiency, the gap mymargin between OFDM signal and RF tone is not needed. However, the down-converted signal will suffer signal-to-signal beating interference (SSBI). In this letter, we propose and successfully employ the $2\times 2$ MIMO SSBI mitigation schemes to mitigate SSBI, resulting in 45% capacity improvement.
