Abstract:Geological observations can be made on multiple scales, including micro- (e.g. thin section), meso- (e.g. hand-sized to outcrop) and macro- (e.g. outcrop and larger) scales. Types of meso-scale samples include, but are not limited to, rocks (including drill cores), minerals, and fossils. The spatial relationship among samples paired with physical (e.g. granulometric composition, density, roughness) and chemical (e.g. mineralogical and isotopic composition) properties can aid in interpreting geological settings, such as paleo-environmental and formational conditions as well as geomorphological history. Field samples are collected along traverses in the area of interest based on characteristic representativeness of a region, predetermined rate of sampling, and/or uniqueness. The location of a sample can provide relative context in seeking out additional key samples. Beyond labelling and recording of geospatial coordinates for samples, further analysis of physical and chemical properties may be conducted in the field and laboratory. The main motivation for this paper is to present a workflow for the digital preservation of samples (via 3D laser scanning) paired with the development of cyber infrastructure, which offers geoscientists and engineers the opportunity to access an increasingly diverse worldwide collection of digital Earth materials. This paper describes a Web-based graphical user interface developed using Web AppBuilder for ArcGIS for digitized meso-scale 3D scans of geological samples to be viewed alongside the macro-scale environment. Over 100 samples of virtual rocks, minerals and fossils populate the developed geological database and are linked explicitly with their associated attributes, characteristic properties, and location. Applications of this new Web-based geological visualization paradigm in the geosciences demonstrate the utility of such a tool in an age of increasing global data sharing.

Abstract:Studying a changing world requires observations going back in time to extend and contextualize our latest scientific knowledge. Old legacy data exist in non‐digital formats. Thus, techniques and methodologies for the preservation, dissemination, interpretation, homogenization, calibration, and use of such legacy data and their associated metadata, as well as for their present scientific use are important topics for advancing our understanding of the changing Earth and of past extreme events. The articles presented in this special issue review different issues involved in these diverse topics, including the importance of preserving old data and metadata, the actors involved in the task, the problems in converting them to digital files and databases, as well as to point some hints for the future.

Abstract:Geologists are curious to learn what the Earth was like when the planet was young. We want to know about temperature, beaches, soils, climate, rivers, meteorite impacts, and volcanic activity because these factors determined how and where early life could exist. Only the oldest sedimentary rocks have this information, but these are usually covered by younger rocks. Old sedimentary rocks that still “tell a good story” about the history of the Earth are rare. We studied some of these. They are an unimaginable 3.2 billion years old and are found in the Makhonjwa Mountains near South Africa’s border with Eswatini. We had to drill into the Earth to get to them because the surface is covered by forest and grassland. Sedimentary rock layers in these mountains do not lie flat anymore but are vertical, and sometimes even flipped over. To drill through as many layers as possible, we had to drill sideways!

Abstract:1 QUESTION FORMULATION Time and space are the two basic axes to characterize the existence of matter. Without time, there would be no rate ("No dates, No rates"). The Earth has a history of approximately 4.5 billion years, leaving behind a myriad of geological records, and the geologic timeline is the only common language avail-able to unravel the evolutionary history of the Earth. In the past two hundred years, geoscientists from all over the world have been working to explore approaches to reconstruct the evolu-tionary history of Earth. The emergence of the principle of fau-nal succession in the 18th century provided an important theo-retical means for the construction of geologic timescales (Sch-neer and Yochelson, 1989). By the 1960s, the study of stratigra-phy and geochronology has reached a new stage due to the technological advancement and multidisciplinary approach that integrated lithostratigraphy, cyclostratigraphy, chemostratigra-phy, magnetostratigraphy and geochronology. Subsequently, the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) was found-ed on demand to resolve the discrepancies in the demarcation and classification of chronostratigraphy by different regions, experts, and methods. The ICS aims to establish a universal standard chronostratigraphy for intercontinental and regional correlations, i.e., geologic timescales.

Abstract:Fossils are the remains of ancient organisms, they are our non-renewable resource; they are the only data we have to understand the evolution of human life on Earth. Fossils and its existing environments must be preserved. This article introduces the issues what National Protected Important Paleontological Fossils Sites are facing in the urbanization process, and points out planning for these sites needs a multi-disciplinary and –sectoral collaboration for site preservation, local economic growth, and scientific research. Planners have to enhance their knowledge and productively communicate with geologists in order to guide the public to learn geology, and explore the nature.

Abstract:To promote a more efficient and transparent geochemistry data ecosystem, a consortium of Australian university research laboratories called the AuScope Geochemistry Network (AGN) assembled to build a collaborative platform for the express purpose of preserving, disseminating, and collating geochronology and isotopic data. In partnership with geoscience-data-solutions company Lithodat Pty Ltd, the open, cloud-based AusGeochem platform (https://ausgeochem.auscope.org.au) was developed to simultaneously serve as a geosample registry, a geochemical data repository, and a data analysis tool. Informed by method-specific groups of geochemistry experts and established international data reporting practices, community-agreed database schemas were developed for rock and mineral geosample metadata and secondary ion mass spectrometry U-Pb analysis, with additional models for laser ablation inductively-coupled mass spectrometry U-Pb and Lu-Hf, Ar-Ar, fission-track and (U-Th-Sm)/He under development. Collectively, the AusGeochem platform provides the geochemistry community with a new, dynamic resource to help facilitate FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data management, streamline data dissemination and advanced quantitative investigations of Earth system processes. By systematically archiving detailed geochemical (meta-)data in structured schemas, intractably large datasets comprising thousands of analyses produced by numerous laboratories can be readily interrogated in novel and powerful ways. These include rapid derivation of inter-data relationships, facilitating on-the-fly data compilation, analysis, and visualisation.

A Photomicrograph Dataset of Rocks for Petrology Teaching at Nanjing University

Abstract:Thin sections have always played an irreplaceable role in the nearly 100-year history of petrology teaching and research in the School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, Nanjing University. Though these thin sections for teaching have gone through the process of depletion, loss, adding, and renewal, they include 28 different kinds of sedimentary rocks, 40 kinds of igneous rocks, and 42 kinds of metamorphic rocks. These thin sections in Nanjing University cover over 90% of the common types of rocks, including more than 95% of the common minerals and rock textures required by the syllabus of geology major. This dataset electronically informatizes the thin sections currently used by Nanjing University for petrology teaching here. A total of 2658 polarized-light micrographs from 330 thin sections of 110 different kinds of rocks have been completed. In order to better share the teaching materials of petrology, the photomicrographs and information tables of these thin sections are shared with peers. Teachers can use them for teaching, or students can do some professional training and self-study through the dataset. In addition, these high-quality image data with uniform standards can be used for cross-researches such as machine learning and automatic identification of rocks. These photomicrographs can also be used as materials for advertising and pattern design in production practice.

Abstract:Over the past decades and even centuries, the astronomical community has accumulated a signif-icant heritage of recorded observations of a great many astronomical objects. Those records con-tain irreplaceable information about long-term evolutionary and non-evolutionary changes in our Universe, and their preservation and digitization is vital. Unfortunately, most of those data risk becoming degraded and thence totally lost. We hereby call upon the astronomical community and US funding agencies to recognize the gravity of the situation, and to commit to an interna-tional preservation and digitization efforts through comprehensive long-term planning supported by adequate resources, prioritizing where the expected scientific gains, vulnerability of the origi-nals and availability of relevant infrastructure so dictates. The importance and urgency of this issue has been recognized recently by General Assembly XXX of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in its Resolution B3: "on preservation, digitization and scientific exploration of his-torical astronomical data". We outline the rationale of this promotion, provide examples of new science through successful recovery efforts, and review the potential losses to science if nothing it done.

Abstract:Laboratory-scale analysis of natural rocks provides petrophysical properties such as density, porosity, pore diameter/pore-throat diameter distribution, and fluid accessibility, in addition to the size and shape of framework grains and their contact relationship with the rock matrix. Different types of laboratory approaches for petrophysical characterization involve the use of a range of sample sizes. While the sample sizes selected should aim to be representative of the rock body, there are inherent limitations imposed by the analytical principles and holding capacities of the different experimental apparatuses, with many instruments only able to accept samples at the μm–mm scale. Therefore, a total of nine (three limestones, three shales, two sandstones, and one dolomite) samples were collected from Texas to fill the knowledge gap of the sample size effect on the resultant petrophysical characteristics. The sample sizes ranged from 3 cm cubes to <75 μm particles. Using a combination of petrographic microscopy, helium expansion pycnometry, water immersion porosimetry, mercury intrusion porosimetry, and (ultra-) small-angle X-ray scattering, the impact of sample size on the petrophysical properties of these samples was systematically investigated here. The results suggest that the sample size effect is influenced by both pore structure changes during crushing and sample size-dependent fluid-to-pore connectivity.

Abstract:There are at least 5 units of Cretaceous clastic rocks widely outcropping on the central-northern Lhasa Terrane, Tibet. These sedimentary rocks faithfully recorded the information of a series of important geological events such as the demise of Bangong–Nujiang Ocean, the Lhasa-Qiangtang collision, and the early uplift of the Tibetan Plateau. In view of not enough basic geological research in the Tibetan Plateau, basic petrological data that can be consulted publicly is very scarce, and repeated petrological work is ongoing. In order to better share these basic geological data, a total of 402 pieces of Cretaceous rocks collected from the Duoni, Duba, Jingzhushan, Daxiong Formations, and Kcv Unit were taken photos by polarized light microscopes in Nanjing University. The dataset includes 23 siltstones, 235 sandstones, 15 conglomerates, 98 gravels, 2 mixed siliciclastic and carbonate rocks, 6 carbonate nodules, 14 volcanic clastic rocks, 6 igneous rocks, and 3 metamorphic rocks from the 5 Cretaceous siliciclastic units. This dataset involves 22 stratigraphic sections, which record the sample’s location, stratigraphic age, and rock characteristics in detail. The rock photomicrograph dataset of Cretaceous rocks can be widely used not only in basic geological research but also in interdisciplinary research, such as cooperative research with computer sciences. Besides, as the basic geological data, the dataset can also provide social applications on prospecting, oil exploration, teaching or sciences popularization.

Abstract:Developed along the south margin of the Lhasa terrane, the Cretaceous Xigaze forearc basin consists of mainly siliciclastic rocks interbedded with minor marls and limestone, recording the north subduction of the Neotethys to the Lhasa terrane. The Xigaze forearc basin includes the Chongdui, Sangzugang, Ngamring, Padana and Qubeiya formations, with overlying Quxia and Jialazi formations deposited during the initial India-Asia collision. The forearc basin has been well-studied during decades due to completed preservation and well-exposure. However, basic petrological data published is still limited, and petrological work has to be carried out repeatedly. Therefore, a total of 191 pieces of Cretaceous clastic rocks collected from the Chongdui, Ngamring and Padana formations were selected and taken photos by polarized light microscopes in Nanjing University, so as to better share and use these basic geological data. The selected rock samples include 5 shales, 2 siltstones, 158 sandstones, 11 conglomerates, 7 gravels, 7 siliceous rocks and 1 pyroclastic rock. In addition, the dataset also contains the detailed information of 10 stratigraphic sections where these rock samples are located. Besides providing materials for basic geological research, this dataset of Cretaceous rocks can also be applied to interdisciplinary cooperative research, like artificial intelligence recognition.

Abstract:During the long-term geological survey work in our country , a great deal of geological data have been accumulated .Considering the convenience of data ’ s distributed storage and management , in order to realize the sharing and associations , linked data technology is introduced into geological archives .Guiding by the four simple rules of linked data , referring to linked data published framework in other fields , on the publishing process for geo-logical data as linked data according to its data character was studied .Tested on 20 000 geological archives , with D2R software, those metadata stored in relational database into RDF format was transferred and then published them on the Web , and therefore published geological data as linked data .
Conservation and Protection of the Assorted Geosites: Western Part of the Kutch Basin, India

Abstract:Globally Cenozoic interval witnessed recurrent climatic change of warming and cooling episodes of various magnitudes. The geological archives of the western part of the Kutch Basin are bestowed with spectacular igneous structures formed during the Deccan Trap volcanism. Overlying, Cenozoic successions of the Kutch Basin also get affected by the global climatic perturbations, which get registered in their impressive stratigraphic successions. Sedimentation in the basin was primarily controlled by the rate of relative sea-level fluctuations vs. background siliciclastic supply. Combined effect of climatic perturbations and relative sea-level fluctuation along passive-margin setting resulted in the occurence of variety of fossils, lithology and sedimentary structures, available all over the Cenozoic outcrops. To conserve and protect endangered geological features, geoscientists around the world have recognized several geosites, which can serve as standard reference section for further research and sustainable development for generations. In this study, we identify some spectacular outcrops from the western parts of the Kutch Basin (Cenozoic outcrops and Deccan Trap exposures) and document their properties to be recognized as potential geosites. These sites preserve exclusive geological features and provide template to understand the geological processes, however, needs conservation and protection. We propose the following assorted geosites viz. (1) Entablature geosite, (2) Pillow lava geosite, (3) Taphonomy geosite, (4) Fossil crab geosite, (5) Trace fossil geosite and (6) Soft sediment deformation (SSD) geosite. These sites may serve as exclusive locations for students field excursion, field-training for diverse professionals, social outreach activities and future reference section; indeed helps to achieve the implementation of some of the geoheritage goals. Diverse and unique geological features can be easily approached by thoroughly connected rail network and metalled roads.

Abstract:To facilitate the sharing of chert information and promote chert research, we have compiled a summary of literature containing chert information worldwide and established the Global Chert Database (GCDB). Our research is carried out within the Deep‐time Digital Earth (DDE) Big Science Program. Chert is a sedimentary rock abundant and conspicuous throughout the geologic record. It serves as an essential geological archive and is vital for palaeogeographic reconstruction. The Chert Database Working Group is part of the OneSediment Working Groups of the Deep‐time Digital Earth (DDE) Big Science Program. To facilitate the sharing of chert information and promote chert research, we have compiled a summary of literature containing chert information worldwide and established the Global Chert Database (GCDB). The main body of the current database consists of seven data tables, each providing details on references, lithology, depositional age, geographic location, depositional environment and geochemical information for each sample. As of December 2023, the GCDB contains 8417 sample data from 617 pieces of literature, which can be downloaded from the 'DDE Data Publish & Repository'.

Abstract:Speleothems are well-proven archives of terrestrial climate variation, recording mean temperature, rainfall, and surface vegetation data at subannual to millennial resolution. They also form within the generally stable environment of caves, and thus may remain remarkably well preserved for many millions of years and, most important, can be dated radiometrically to provide robust chronologies that do not rely on orbital tuning, ice-flow modeling, or estimates of sediment deposition rates. The recent adaptation of the U-Pb dating technique to speleothems has greatly extended their potential as paleoclimate recorders back into the more distant geological past, well beyond the similar to 500 k.y. limit previously imposed by U-series techniques, but the opportunities presented by these new methods have yet to be fully explored. As an extreme example, here we report on samples recovered from Permian cave fills, the oldest radiometrically dated speleothems so far documented. Using state of the art analytical techniques it is possible to determine not only their age and state of preservation, but also to extract apparently nearly pristine climate proxy data. Armed with these methods, it now seems reasonable to apply the lessons learned from more recent speleothems to ancient materials, wherever they can be found, and of whatever age, to generate snapshots of paleoclimate that can be used to greatly refine the records preserved within the sediments and fossils of the time.
Ancient Siliciclastic-Evaporites as Seen by Remote Sensing Instrumentation with Implications for the Rover-Scale Exploration of Sedimentary Environments on Mars

Abstract:Accurate interpretation of the martian sedimentary rock record-and by extension that planet's paleoenvironmental history and potential habitability-relies heavily on rover-based acquisition of textural and compositional data and researchers to properly interpret those data. However, the degree to which this type of remotely sensed information can be unambiguously resolved and accurately linked to geological processes in ancient sedimentary systems warrants further study. In this study, we characterize Mars-relevant siliciclastic-evaporite samples by traditional laboratory-based geological methods (thin section petrography, X-ray diffraction [XRD], backscattered electron imaging, microprobe chemical analyses) and remote sensing methods relevant to martian rover payloads (visible-near-mid infrared reflectance spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence mapping, XRD). We assess each method's ability to resolve primary and secondary sedimentologic features necessary for the accurate interpretation of paleoenvironmental processes. While the most dominant textures and associated compositions (i.e., bedded gypsum evaporite) of the sample suite are readily identified by a combination of remote sensing techniques, equally important, although more subtle, components (i.e., interbedded windblown silt, meniscus cements) are not resolved unambiguously in bulk samples. However, rover-based techniques capable of coordinating spatially resolved compositional measurements with textural imaging reveal important features not readily detected using traditional assessments (i.e., subtle clay-organic associations, microscale diagenetic nodules). Our findings demonstrate the improved generational capacity of rovers to explore ancient sedimentary environments on Mars while also highlighting the complexities in extracting comprehensive paleoenvironmental information when limited to currently available rover-based techniques. Complete and accurate interpretation of ancient martian sedimentary environments, and by extension the habitability of those environments, likely requires sample return or in situ human exploration. Plain Language Summary Only when correctly translated can the ancient martian sedimentary rock record reveal the environmental evolution of the planet's surface through time. In this case study, we characterize Mars-relevant sedimentary rocks and evaluate the degree to which a comprehensive geological picture can be resolved unambiguously when limited to microscale remote sensing methods relevant to rovers on Mars. While the most dominant textural features and associated compositions of the sample suite are readily identified by a combination of remote sensing techniques, equally important but more subtle components are not resolved unambiguously in bulk samples. However, rover-based techniques capable of coordinating spatially resolved compositional measurements with textural imaging, such as Perseverance Rover's Planetary Instrument for X-Ray Lithochemistry instrument, reveal important features not readily detected by more traditional methods. We demonstrate that rovers have, generationally, improved in their capacity to resolve a true geological picture in ancient sedimentary environments, likely owing to an improved ability to coordinate spatially resolved compositional measurements with textural imaging at the microscale. However, our work also highlights the complexities involved in extracting subtle environmental information when limited to currently available rover-based techniques and suggests that comprehensive interpretation of ancient martian sedimentary systems likely requires sample return or in situ human exploration. Key Points Mars-relevant samples are characterized using both traditional laboratory and microscale rover-based remote sensing techniques to assess each method's ability to recognize features necessary for accurate paleoenvironmental process interpretation. While some key paleoenvironmental processes can reasonably be inferred via remote sensing methods, others cannot be resolved unambiguously. Perseverance Rover's Planetary Instrument for X-Ray Lithochemistry instrument reveals diagenetic features that would otherwise remain unseen by traditional thin section petrography.

Abstract:Rock art is a widespread cultural heritage, representing an immovable element of the material culture created on natural rocky supports. Paintings and petroglyphs can be found within caves and rock shelters or in open-air contexts and for that reason they are not isolated from the processes acting at the Earth surface. Consequently, rock art represents a sort of ecosystem because it is part of the complex and multidirectional interplay between the host rock, pigments, environmental parameters, and microbial communities. Such complexity results in several processes affecting rock art; some of them contribute to its destruction, others to its preservation. To understand the effects of such processes an interdisciplinary scientific approach is needed. In this contribution, we discuss the many processes acting at the rock interface—where rock art is present—and the multifaceted possibilities of scientific investigations—non-invasive or invasive—offered by the STEM disciplines. Finally, we suggest a sustainable approach to investigating rock art allowing to understand its production as well as its preservation and eventually suggest strategies to mitigate the risks threatening its stability.

Abstract:Chemical stratigraphy has been playing an increasingly important part in solving stratigraphical problems.Nevertheless,its inter-discipline characteristics such as multi-step,intricate technology and high cost present critical requirements to its researchers for their comprehensive qualifications such as structure of knowledge.Deficiency of any step would bring defects or mistakes to the test result and study reliability.These problems have already been exposed one by one in chemical stratigraphy in the past twenty years.Hence the guaranteeing of original characteristics of testing samples constitutes a most important problem.The research resources could be focused to the proper targets in the process of sampling in field work and the preparation of testing samples in indoor study.With the help of cathode luminescence,the disturbance of diagenesis could be excluded and eliminated eventually.How to verify the systematic errors of testing instruments and how to make the most of these testing data are also the crucial problems which should be solved.Owing to the characteristics of carbonatite,debris and fossil shells,there are still some weak points that should be strengthened in chemical stratigraphy studies.
Lithologies and Chronologic Opportunities of Materials to Be Returned From the Artemis Exploration Zone

Abstract:The Artemis exploration zone is a geologically complex region likely to host some of the oldest and as‐yet‐unstudied materials on the Moon. We review six potential Artemis landing sites (001, 004, 007, 011, 102, and 105) within candidate Artemis III landing regions "Connecting Ridge," "Peak Near Shackleton," "Leibnitz Beta Plateau," "de Gerlache Rim," and "de Gerlache Rim 2." Kaguya Spectral Profiler mineral data were used to determine the average lithological composition at each landing site. Potentially accessible geologic materials, their ages and significance, and appropriate application of radiometric chronometers are discussed in reference to return samples from each potential landing site. Chronological analyses of return samples from the Artemis exploration zone will enable the anchoring of the lunar impact flux curve, determine the absolute timing of pivotal events in lunar geologic history, and reveal the geological diversity of the differentiated lunar body.

Abstract:We live in an age characterized by increasing environmental, social, economic, and political uncertainty. Human societies face significant challenges, ranging from climate change to food security, biodiversity declines and extinction, and political instability. In response, scientists, policy makers, and the general public are seeking new interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary approaches to evaluate and identify meaningful solutions to these global challenges. Underrecognized among these challenges is the disappearing record of past environmental change, which can be key to surviving the future. Historical sciences such as archaeology access the past to provide long-term perspectives on past human ecodynamics: the interaction between human social and cultural systems and climate and environment. Such studies shed light on how we arrived at the present day and help us search for sustainable trajectories toward the future. Here, we highlight contributions by archaeology—the study of the human past—to interdisciplinary research programs designed to evaluate current social and environmental challenges and contribute to solutions for the future. The past is a multimillennial experiment in human ecodynamics, and, together with our transdisciplinary colleagues, archaeology is well positioned to uncover the lessons of that experiment.
