Abstract:Nowadays, photoactive viologen units have been widely encapsulated in metal-organic frameworks and assembled into multifunctional materials with photochromism and other light regulating properties. A novel host-guest MOF material, {[Zn(bcbpy) 0.5 (IPA)]·CH 3 CN} n ( 1 ), has been constructed by a viologen ligand 1,1′-bis((3-carboxylatobenzyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium)-dichloride (H 2 bcbpy·2Cl), isophthalic acid (IPA) and zinc(II) chloride. Complex 1 exhibits UV and X-ray dual photochromism and photo-controlled luminescence properties. Complex 1 also exhibits a temperature-dependent phosphorescence from cyan to yellow when the temperature increases from 77 to 297 K. 1T will be obtained when 1 is heated in air at 230 °C for 30 min, 1T shows less sensitive photochromic property than 1 due to its longer C–H⋯O hydrogen bond distance for electron transfer pathway. In addition, complex 1 has the potential application as an inkless and erasable printing material due to the excellent photochromic property.

Abstract:Smart chromic materials reacting to physicochemical stimuli are widely applied in optical switches, smart windows, and chemical sensors. Currently, most materials only respond to a single stimulus, but those that respond to multiple external stimuli are still in the minority. Herein, we report a novel porous zinc tungstate@metaloxoviologen framework [Zn3(Bcbpy)6(H2O)2]-[ZnW12O40]·6H2O (ZnW12@MV, H2BcbpyCl2 = 1,1'-bis(3-carboxybenzyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium dichloride), which shows multiple stimulus-responsive properties due to a combination of different functional motifs, namely, viologen electron acceptors, luminescent zinc-oxygen-clusters, porous cationic frameworks, and ZnW12O406- electron donors. Generally, the large-sized polyoxometalate (POM) anions serving as structure-directing agents can easily direct the formation of the oligomeric metaloxoviologen cations, mainly because POMs may break down some linkages leaving larger spaces for themselves. The large ZnW12O406- anions in ZnW12@MV are encapsulated into three-dimensional (3D) metaloxoviologen frameworks built up from the linkages of trinuclear zinc-oxygen clusters and Bcbpy viologens, which offer the first example of a 3D metaloxoviologen framework induced by large-sized POM anions. ZnW12@MV shows a reversible chromic response to X-ray/UV and electricity via different stimulus-induced electron transfers between electron-rich POM anions and electron-deficient metaloxoviologen frameworks, whereas the coloration changes are ascribed to the formation of radical and mixed-valence colored state ZnW12O406- species. The photochromic behavior is accompanied by photoluminescence quenching. The discriminative response to different-sized amines is attributed to the formation of viologen radicals through host-guest electron transfer. These results indicate that the multi-stimulus response ZnW12@MV can be applied in electrochromic devices, inkless erasable printing, and the detection of amines.

Abstract:Stable viologen-derived multifunctional smart materials exhibit widespread practical applications in many areas. In this study, a viologen-derived material with 4-fold interpenetrating diamondoid network, {[Cd(1,4-ndc)(cpbpy)]·2H 2 O} n , was successfully constructed based on asymmetrical N-(3-carboxyphenyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium (cpbpy) and 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (1,4-H 2 ndc). The compound shows reversible photochromic behavior under a xenon lamp, which are proved by UV–vis spectra and EPR characterizations. Moreover, the compound with good photoluminescence properties displays photocontrolled luminescence quenching behaviors. Owing to its good water stability, the compound is then applied in luminescence sensing for the detection of Cr 2 O 7 2− in aqueous solution. The corresponding luminescence quenching constant for Cr 2 O 7 2− is K SV = 4.33 × 10 4 M −1 , and the detection limit is 3.66 μM. Systematic investigations on the luminescence quenching mechanism suggest that the inner filter effect resulted in the selective detection of Cr 2 O 7 2− . This study provides inspiration for the design and synthesis of target luminescent crystalline materials with rigid and asymmetric viologen-derived ligands.

Abstract:The tunable luminescent materials based on photochromic reactions have received considerable interest due to its potential applications in switches and optical memory devices. However, constructing such materials with ideal properties remains a challenge. In this context, two rare viologen-based host guest materials, 2[MV]·[Zn6(PMA)4(H2O)4] (1), 2[PBM]·[Zn2(PMA)2(H2O)6] (2), (MV·2NO3 = 1,1'-dimethyl-(4,4'-bipyridine)-1,1'-diium dinitrate; PBM·2NO3 = 4,4'-(1,4-phenylene)bis(1-methylpyridin-1-ium) dinitrate; H2PMA = pyromellitic acid), have been prepared by encapsulating viologen derivatives into the anionic metal-organic frameworks produced from pyromellitic acid ligands and zinc cations. Due to the presence of photoactive guest MV2+/PBM2+ and the short O⋯N+ distances between the oxygen atom of carboxylate groups and pyridine ring of guest, both complexes display fast-responsive reversible naked photochromism from colorless to blue or yellow upon UV–Vis irradiation At the same time, these host-guest materials exhibit good fluorescence emission behavior and their fluorescence can be reversible modulation under light irradiation. These are rare examples of fluorescence switching materials based on host-guest system that involve the electron-transfer photochromic process.

Abstract:Multistimuli responsive materials based on the viologen coordination polymers have attracted much interest in the past few years due to the increasing demand for smart materials. In this paper, based on a viologen ligand 1-(3-carboxybenzyl)- 4,4′-bipyridinium chloride (Hcbbpy) and zinc(II) ion, a new crystalline complex, namely, {[Zn(cbbpy)Cl2]·H2O}n (1) has been designed and synthesized. In complex 1, every cbbpy ligand as a bridge links two Zn2+ ions via carboxylate O atom and pyridine N atom to extend to a 1D zigzag chain. The 1D chains are extended to 3D supramolecular structure through π···π stacking and hydrogen bonding. More importantly, 1 exhibits fast photochromic behaviors in response to UV and X-ray due to the formation of viologen radicals. Complex 1 also shows photo-modulated luminescence property in the solid state. In addition, complex 1 can be deposited on filter paper and displays the potential application as inkless print material.

Versatile Photo/Electricity Responsive Properties of a Coordination Polymer Based on Extended Viologen Ligands

Abstract:Responsive chromogenic materials have attracted increasing interest among researchers; however, up until now, few materials have exhibited multifunctional chromogenic properties. The coordination polymers (CPs) provide intriguing platforms to design and construct multifunctional materials. Here, a multifunctional photo/electricity responsive CP named Zn-Oxv, which is based on the "extended viologen" (ExV) ligand, was synthesized. The Zn-Oxv exhibited reversible photochromism, photomodulated fluorescence, electrochromism and electrofluorochromism. Furthermore, we prepared Zn-Oxv thin films and investigated electrochromic (EC) properties of viologen-based CPs for the first time. Zn-Oxv thin films showed excellent EC performance with a rapid switching speed (both coloring and bleaching time within 1 s), high coloration efficiency (102.9 cm2/C) and transmittance change (exceeding 40%). Notably, the Zn-Oxv is by far the fastest CP EC material based on redox-active ligands ever reported, indicating that the viologen-based CPs could open up a new field of materials for EC applications. Therefore, viologen-based CPs are attractive candidates for the design of novel multi-responsive chromogenic materials and EC materials that could promise creative applications in intelligent technology, dynamic displays and smart sensors.

Abstract:In this work, two Zn(II)-viologen compounds, {[Zn(cpbpy)(L)](H 2 O) 5 } n ( 1 ) and [Zn(H 2 O) 6 ](cpbpy) 2 (L) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ( 2 ) (cpbpy = N-(3-carboxypyridin-5-yl)− 4,4′-bipyridinium, H 2 L = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid) have been constructed via different synthetic routes. Structural analysis exhibits compound 1 features a two-dimension layered structure consisting of one-dimension [Zn(L)] n chains and bridging cpbpy ligands while compound 2 exists as a discrete monomeric structure. In a very short period of time, both compounds display electron-transfer photochromic behaviors. However, the photoproduct of compound 2 is more stable than compound 1 in air, which is attributed to better coplanarity of pyridyl rings of 4,4′-bipyridine moieties in compound 2 . Also, both compounds show photomodulated luminescence properties. Strikingly, compound 2 also exhibits interesting water-induced reversible crystal-to-amorphous transformation accompanying with reversible luminescence switch behavior. To our knowledge, this is the first example of a crystalline viologen-based compound that displays water-induced reversible crystal-to-amorphous transformation.

A Multistimuli Responsive Crystalline Cd(II)-Viologen Coordination Polymer with Single-Crystal–Single-Crystal Transformation

Abstract:It is necessary to develop stable and fast multistimuli responsive materials due to the growing demand in our daily life. In this work, a new viologen-based Cd-complex (1) exhibits multiple thermochromic and photochromic behaviors through 10 states with 7 colors. For example, it responds to both Cu Kα/Mo Kα X-ray sources and UV dual light quickly with a color change from colorless to dark blue (1X) (Cu Kα/Mo Kα X-ray sources) and cyan (1-UV) (UV light), respectively. Interestingly, it exhibits a three-step coloration phenomenon when heated, which is unprecedented in viologen compounds. Crystal 1 undergoes a color change to pink, blue, and brown under 130, 180, and 240 °C, respectively. In addition, upon fumigation, both 1P and 1Q undergo a decoloration process to colorless (1K) and yellow (1T), respectively. Four more states (1P, 1K, 1T, and 1O) obtained via dehydration–hydration treatment are all photochromic. More importantly, via single-crystal–single-crystal transformation (SC–SC), the photochromic and thermochromic behaviors of 1 were investigated from the molecular level, which is also rather rare for thermochromic species. The detailed electron donor and the pathways for electron transfer were clearly given according to the results of crystal structure. Abstract:The development of viologen-based photochromic composite materials with fast response to ultraviolet light has become a major research focus. In this paper, we fabricated viologen-based composite films with excellent durability and rapid photochromic performance by the solution casting method. The films changed color within one second when exposed to ultraviolet light (3W, 365 nm). This was because ZnO NPs photogenerated electrons that enhanced the photoreduction of viologens with matched energy bands. The decoloration process of the films could be regulated by different moisture levels while keeping their photochromic properties unaffected. Moreover, the films exhibited less than 15% change in absorbance over 20 repeated coloring and fading cycles. Therefore, the films' excellent photoresponsiveness, repeatability and environmental friendliness can provide potential applications in areas such as rewritable paper, solar UV detection, smart windows and anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:By UV–Vis spectroscopy, ESR study, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculation, a newly synthesized tetrazole-viologen based zinc(II) coordination compound, [ZnCl2(3-TzV)(H2O)] (3-TzV=N-(3-tetrazylbenzyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium), was found to exhibit electron-transfer photochromism. In addition to the commonly observed decrease in fluorescence intensity, the fluorescence color changes from green to blue during the coloration, and this change is reversible by altering UV–Vis irradiation and heating for at least seven cycles. The unprecedented photoswitching of fluorescence color for viologen-based photochromic compounds offers a good candidate for multicolor emitting display.

Abstract:Stable stimulus-responsive materials are highly desirable due to their widespread potential applications and growing demand in recent decades. Despite the fact that viologen derivatives have long been known as excellent photochromic and electrochromic materials, the development of stable viologen-based multifunctional smart materials with short coloration times remains an exciting topic. To obtain photochromic and electrochromic dual responsive materials, embedding the viologen ligand into a robust metal oxide cluster to increase its stability and sensitivity is an effective strategy. Herein, a viologen-based metal–organic polyhedron (MOP) {[Zr6L3(μ3-O)2(μ2-OH)6Cp6]·8Cl·CH3OH·DMF} [Zr-MOP-1; H2L·2Cl = 1,1′-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium dichloride, and Cp = η5-C5H5] was successfully prepared and characterized. It consists of trinuclear Zr–oxygen secondary building units and exhibits reversible photochromic and electrochromic dual responsive behaviors. As expected, the designed robust viologen-based nanocage with a V2E3 (V = vertex, and E = edge) topology can maintain its stability and rapid photo/electrochromic behaviors with an obvious reversible change in color from purple (brown) to green, mainly due to the enclosed cluster structure and the abundant free viologen radicals that originate from the effective Cl → N and O → N electron transfers. Abstract:Electro‐ and photo‐stimuli responsive color/fluorescence dual‐switchable viologen derivatives phen‐Vio[Cl− I−], phen‐Vio[2Cl−] and phen‐Vio[2I−] are designed and synthesized employing fluorophore 1,10‐phenanthroline as an N‐aryl substituent and halogen ions as anions. Multifunctional devices and anti‐counterfeiting applications are presented to demonstrate their excellent electrochromic/electrofluorochromic and photochromic/photofluorochromic performance, which provides strong guidance for the design and development of stimuli‐responsive color/fluorescence dual‐switching materials and devices. Recently, stimuli‐responsive color/fluorescence dual‐switchable materials have attracted great attention, whereas most of them respond to monostimulus. Therefore, it is essential to design two or multi‐stimuli‐responsive color/fluorescence dual‐switchable materials and develop their applications. Viologens, which respond to the electric potential, light irradiation, pH, and heat, are suitable for the construction of two‐ or multi‐stimuli‐responsive materials. Moreover, their easily modified chemical structure, tunable electronic properties, and excellent electrochemical characteristics can endow viologens with the desired color/fluorescence dual‐switching behaviors. Herein, novel electro‐ and photo‐stimuli responsive color/emission dual‐switchable viologen derivatives phen‐Vio[Cl− I−], phen‐Vio[2Cl−] and phen‐Vio[2I−] employing fluorophore 1,10‐phenanthroline as an N‐aryl substituent and halogen ions as anions are designed and synthesized. The introduction of 1,10‐phenanthroline groups onto the viologen skeleton can endow viologen derivatives with the color/fluorescence dual‐switching properties under electrical or light stimulus. While the introduction of halogen ions allows viologen derivatives to respond to both electrical and light stimuli simultaneously. Multifunctional devices fabricated with phen‐Vio[Cl− I−], phen‐Vio[2Cl−] or phen‐Vio[2I−] as active materials exhibit excellent electrochromic/electrofluorochromic and photochromic/photofluorochromic performance. Additionally, anti‐counterfeiting applications are successfully demonstrated by employing a commercial printer with self‐made ink and papers. Abstract:At present, viologen-based compounds can undergo reversible chemical/physical changes under external stimuli such as light and electricity. This makes these compounds have potential applications in smart windows, displays, and sensors. In order to obtain such materials, three viologen-POM inorganic-organic hybrid compounds have been successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method, namely {[Cu2(cybpy)8(α-P2W18O62)2}·18H2O (1), (Hbpy)·(cybpy)·[H4(α-P2W18O62)]}·32H2O (2) and {(Hcybpy)2(β-Mo8O26)}·2H2O (3) (cybpy·Br = 1-cyclobutylmethyl-[4,4']bipyridinyl-1-ium bromide, bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine). Three compounds exhibit good discoloration behaviors under various external stimuli, especially under the stimulation of X-ray, UV, electricity, and organic amines. In addition, in order to promote the compounds in the actual production of more applications, they were doped into the polymer matrix to construct hybrid films, which not only have the same response to external stimulation but also increase the repeatability of the photochromic process. Moreover, 1-3 powder samples in ethanol solution were ultrasonic treated and deposited on filter paper, which can be successfully used in erasable inkless printing.

Abstract:Viologens ( N,N'-dimethyl-4,4-bipyridinium) are advanced functional materials, found important applications in electrochromic devices, molecular machines, organic batteries, and carbohydrate oxidation catalysts in alkaline fuel. In this article, we investigated the design, synthesis and photophysical properties of N,N'-dimethyl-2,5-Bis(pyridinium)oxadiazole 4 and its precursor 2,5- Bis(pyridine)oxadiazole 2. The crystal structure and photophysical properties of viologen 4 and precursor 2 have been determined. The viologen molecule 4 crystallized in monoclinic form, space group P2 1/ n with four molecules in unit cell. Precursor molecule 2 also crystalized in monoclinic form, space group C2/ c with four molecules in unit cell. From X-rd data, we found three cations in the molecular structure of viologen molecule 4, which is unusual in viologens. In the three-dimensional molecular packing diagram of molecule 4, the three cations and iodate anions are stabilized by C···C, C···I, N···I, N···H, H···I, N—H···I and C—H···I. The dihedral angle between planes having oxadiazole and two benzene rings are 5° and 8°, suggesting the molecule 4 is a slightly strained one. The molecular structure of precursor molecule 2 stabilized by C···C and N···H short contacts between the molecules. The molecule 4 displayed strong absorbance at 315 nm and emissions between 390 - 410 nm.
Electrochromism and Electrofluorochromism based on Viologen Derivative with 1,10‐Phenanthroline Moiety for Multicolor Large‐Area and Patterned Display

Abstract:Viologen derivative Phen‐vio is designed and synthesized by incorporating 1,10‐phenanthroline moiety into 4,4′‐bipyridine. The derivative displayed excellent color/emission dual‐switchable properties. Therefore, large‐area and patterned electrochromic/electrofluorochromic devices are fabricated by employing Phen‐vio as the active material, exhibiting reversible and rich color and fluorescence color changes under electrical stimulus, which provides new ideas for the development of multi‐functional optoelectronic materials and devices. Viologens, a typical group of electrochromic materials, show rich color changes under the external electrical stimulus. Recently, some of the viologen derivatives are reported to exhibit good luminescent performance. However, their luminescence colors are difficult to adjust owing to the strong electron‐accepting properties of viologens, which seriously hinders their applications in smart light‐emitting devices. In this work, the color/emission dual‐switchable viologen derivative Phen‐vio is designed and synthesized by introducing fluorophore 1,10‐phenanthroline into 4,4′‐bipyridine, for multicolor large‐area and patterned electrochromic/electrofluorochromic devices. Under voltage driving of −2.3 and −2.8 V, the devices exhibited reversible color and fluorescence color changes from light yellow to dark orange to dark blue, and from yellow to orange to green, respectively. Moreover, the devices displayed a high color contrast ratio of up to 77% at 600 nm. More importantly, the driving voltages of the devices do not vary with the change of the device area, which is huge application potential in smart windows and tags.

Abstract:The unique electron-deficient viologen-based compounds are the terminally substituted 4,4'-bipyridine with excellent photoelectric response features to be applied in the preparation of stimuli-responsive materials. The emerging stimuli-responsive viologen-based nanocomposites combine the merits of porous frameworks and supramolecular assemblies, exhibiting excellent application prospects in discolouration sensing, catalysis, energy storage, and biomedicine. Employing viologen-based compounds as stimuli-responsive units to coordinate with porous skeletons or macrocycle compounds through coordination bonds, covalent bonds, or non-covalent bonds, the newly formed nanocomposites can effectively improve the stimuli-responsive performance of materials. This review aims to summarize the research progress of viologen-based nanocomposites, including viologen-based metal-organic frameworks, viologen-based covalent organic frameworks, and viologen-based supramolecular assemblies, for exploring and promoting more applications of smart materials in practical production. Moreover, the prospects and challenges of viologen-based stimuli-responsive nanocomposites are also discussed.

Abstract:Multiresponsive color-changing materials have important applications in daily life. In this work, three photochromic, thermochromic, and electrochromic compounds were synthesized by introducing two kinds of polyoxometalates into the viologen system, namely, {[Ni(dibipy)(4,4′-bipyH)(H2O)3]·[Ni4(H2O)2Ge2Mo18O68(MoO2)2]0.5}·10H2O (1), {[NiII(nibipy)2(4,4′-bipy)(H2O)2]·(SiMo12O40)}·2H2O (2), and [(Hnibipy)2·(SiMo12O40)]·2.5H2O (3) (dibipy·Cl = 1-(3,5-dimethyl-isoxazol-4-ylmethyl)-[4,4’]bipyridinyl-1-ium chloride, nibipy·Cl = 1-(4-Nitro-benzyl)-[4,4’]bipyridinyl-1-ium chloride and 4,4′-bipy = 4,4′-bipyridine). Compound 1 contains the Mo-capped weakley anion [Ni4(H2O)2(Ge2Mo18O68(MoO2)2]8–, which is very rare in polyoxometalates. Both 1 and 2 own mixed organic ligands to modify anions, such as viologen and 4,4′-bipy. Compounds 1 and 3 exhibit fast responsive photochromic effects, while compound 2 has rapid recovery of thermochromic properties. Sandwich-type rigid devices based on compounds 1–3 also exhibit electrochromic properties. In addition, hydrogels and poly(methyl methacrylate)-based mixed matrix membrane systems were introduced to achieve portable visual UV detectors. The applications of these compounds in metal ion detection and anticounterfeiting were also studied.

Abstract:Recently, stimuli-responsive materials have attracted great attention, while most of them respond to single or two stimuli. Thus, it is essential to design multifunctional stimuli-responsive materials and develop their applications. The strategy that constructing high-dimensional coordination polymers facilitates the application scope of a viologen-based photochromic system is put forward and confirmed for the first time. Herein, a novel multistimuli-responsive viologen-based Zn-MOF with a two-dimensional framework has been successfully designed and synthesized. Complex 1 exhibits chromic behavior under a variety of external stimuli such as 365 nm UV, X-rays, heat, electricity, and ethylamine. More interestingly, the crystal state of complex 1 displays dual fluorescence and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) emission and emits a yellow afterglow when turning off the UV lamp. In addition, Eu(III)-functionalized hybrids, Eu3+@Zn-MOF, were prepared by coordinated postsynthetic modification based on viologen complexes for the first time. The sample of Eu3+@Zn-MOF inherits the photochromic characteristics of the viologen complexes and gives the distinctive fluorescence of the europium ions. Based on the multicolor switching of 1 and Eu3+@Zn-MOF, their possible practical utilization was successfully developed in the fields of inkless, erasable print media, electrochromic information tag printing, information encryption, and anticounterfeiting.
