Abstract:A novel object descriptor, histogram of Gabor phase pattern (HGPP), is proposed for robust face recognition. In HGPP, the quadrant-bit codes are first extracted from faces based on the Gabor transformation. Global Gabor phase pattern (GGPP) and local Gabor phase pattern (LGPP) are then proposed to encode the phase variations. GGPP captures the variations derived from the orientation changing of Gabor wavelet at a given scale (frequency), while LGPP encodes the local neighborhood variations by using a novel local XOR pattern (LXP) operator. They are both divided into the nonoverlapping rectangular regions, from which spatial histograms are extracted and concatenated into an extended histogram feature to represent the original image. Finally, the recognition is performed by using the nearest-neighbor classifier with histogram intersection as the similarity measurement. The features of HGPP lie in two aspects: 1) HGPP can describe the general face images robustly without the training procedure; 2) HGPP encodes the Gabor phase information, while most previous face recognition methods exploit the Gabor magnitude information. In addition, Fisher separation criterion is further used to improve the performance of HGPP by weighing the subregions of the image according to their discriminative powers. The proposed methods are successfully applied to face recognition, and the experiment results on the large-scale FERET and CAS-PEAL databases show that the proposed algorithms significantly outperform other well-known systems in terms of recognition rate
Local Gabor Binary Pattern Histogram Sequence (LGBPHS): a Novel Non-Statistical Model for Face Representation and Recognition

Abstract:For years, researchers in face recognition area have been representing and recognizing faces based on subspace discriminant analysis or statistical learning. Nevertheless, these approaches are always suffering from the generalizability problem. This paper proposes a novel non-statistics based face representation approach, local Gabor binary pattern histogram sequence (LGBPHS), in which training procedure is unnecessary to construct the face model, so that the generalizability problem is naturally avoided. In this approach, a face image is modeled as a "histogram sequence" by concatenating the histograms of all the local regions of all the local Gabor magnitude binary pattern maps. For recognition, histogram intersection is used to measure the similarity of different LGBPHSs and the nearest neighborhood is exploited for final classification. Additionally, we have further proposed to assign different weights for each histogram piece when measuring two LGBPHSes. Our experimental results on AR and FERET face database show the validity of the proposed approach especially for partially occluded face images, and more impressively, we have achieved the best result on FERET face database.
BHoG: Binary Descriptor for Sketch-Based Image Retrieval

Abstract:Due to the popularity of devices with touch screens, it is convenient to match images with a hand-drawn sketch query. However, existing methods usually care little about memory space and time efficiency thus is inadequate for the rapid growth of multimedia resources. In this paper, a BHoG descriptor is proposed for sketch-based image retrieval. Firstly, the boundary image is detected from natural image using Berkeley boundary detector, and then divided into many blocks. Secondly, we calculate the gradient feature of each block, and find the principal gradient orientation. Finally, the principal gradient orientation is encoded to binary codes, which is proved to be efficient and discriminative. We evaluated the performance of BHoG on a large-scale social media dataset. The experimental results have shown that BHoG not only has a better performance on flexibility and efficiency, but also occupies small memory.

Abstract:The histogram of oriented gradient has been successfully applied in many research fields with excellent performance especially in pedestrian detection. However, the method has rarely been applied to face recognition. Aimed to develop a fast and efficient new feature for face recognition, the original HOG and its variations were applied to evaluate the effects of different factors. An information theory-based criterion was also developed to evaluate the potential classification power of different features. Comparative experiments show that even with a relatively simple feature descriptor, the proposed HOG feature achieves almost the same recognition rate with much lower computational time than the widely used Gabor feature on the FRGC and CAS-PEAL databases.

Abstract:Video-based facial expression recognition has received significant attention in recent years due to its widespread applications. One key issue for video-based facial expression analysis in practice is how to extract dynamic features. In this paper, a novel approach is presented using histogram sequence of local Gabor binary patterns from three orthogonal planes (LGBP-TOP). In this approach, every facial expression sequence is firstly convolved with the multi-scale and multi-orientation Gabor filters to extract the Gabor Magnitude Sequences (GMSs). Then, we use local binary patterns from three orthogonal planes (LBP-TOP) on each GMS to further enhance the feature extraction. Finally, the facial expression sequence is modeled as a histogram sequence by concatenating the histogram pieces of all the local regions of all the LGBP-TOP maps. For recognition, Support Vector Machine (SVM) is exploited. Our experimental results on the extended Cohn-Kanade database (CK+) demonstrate that the proposed method has achieved the best results compared to other methods in recent years.
A New Gabor Phase Difference Pattern for Face and Ear Recognition

Abstract:A new local feature based image representation method is proposed. It is derived from the local Gabor phase difference pattern (LGPDP). This method represents images by exploiting relationships of Gabor phase between pixel and its neighbors. There are two main contributions: 1) a novel phase difference measure is defined; 2) new encoding rules to mirror Gabor phase difference information are designed. Because of them, this method describes Gabor phase difference more precisely than the conventional LGPDP. Moreover, it could discard useless information and redundancy produced near quadrant boundary, which commonly exist in LGPDP. It is shown that the proposed method brings higher discriminative ability to Gabor phase based pattern. Experiments are Conducted on the FRGC version 2.0 and USTB Ear Database to evaluate its validity and generalizability. The proposed method is also compared with several state-of-the-art approaches. It is observed that our method achieves the highest recognition rates among them.

Abstract:Gabor features have been known to be effective for face recognition. However, only a few approaches utilize phase feature and they usually perform worse than those using magnitude feature. To investigate the potential of Gabor phase and its fusion with magnitude for face recognition, in this paper, we first propose local Gabor XOR patterns (LGXP), which encodes the Gabor phase by using the local XOR pattern (LXP) operator. Then, we introduce block-based Fisher's linear discriminant (BFLD) to reduce the dimensionality of the proposed descriptor and at the same time enhance its discriminative power. Finally, by using BFLD, we fuse local patterns of Gabor magnitude and phase for face recognition. We evaluate our approach on FERET and FRGC 2.0 databases. In particular, we perform comparative experimental studies of different local Gabor patterns. We also make a detailed comparison of their combinations with BFLD, as well as the fusion of different descriptors by using BFLD. Extensive experimental results verify the effectiveness of our LGXP descriptor and also show that our fusion approach outperforms most of the state-of-the-art approaches.
Multi-resolution histograms of local variation patterns (MHLVP) for robust face recognition

Abstract:This paper presents a novel approach to face recognition, named Multi-resolution Histograms of Local Variation Patterns (MHLVP), in which face images are represented as the concatenation of the local spatial histogram of local variation patterns computed from the multi-resolution Gabor features. For a face image with abundant texture and shape information, aGabor feature map(GFM) is computed by convolving the image with each of the forty multi-scale and multi-orientation Gabor filters. Each GFM is then divided into small non-overlapping regions to enhance its shape information, and then Local Binary Pattern (LBP) histograms are extracted for each region and concatenated into a feature histogram to enhance the texture information in the specific GFM. Further more, all of the feature histograms extracted from the forty GFMs are further concatenated into a single feature histogram as the final representation of the given face image. Eventually, the identification is achieved by histogram intersection operation. Our experimental results on FERET face databases show that the proposed method performs terrifically better than the performance of some classical results including the best results in FERET'97.

Abstract:Gabor features have been recognized as one of the best representations for face recognition. Usually, only the magnitudes of the Gabor coefficients are thought of as being useful for face recognition, while the phases of the Gabor features are deemed to be useless and thus usually ignored by face recognition researchers. However, in this paper, our findings show that the latter should be reconsidered. By encoding Gabor phases through local binary patterns and local histograms, we have achieved very impressive recognition results, which are comparable to those of Gabor magnitudes-based methods. The results of our experiments also indicate that, by combining the phases with the magnitudes, higher accuracy can be achieved. Such observations suggest that more attention should be paid to the Gabor phases for face recognition.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel face recognition method by integrating the Gabor wavelet representation of face images and the enhanced powerful discriminator, complete Kernel Fisher Discriminant (CKFD) with fractional power polynomial (FPP) models. The novelty of this paper comes from (1) Gabor wavelet, is employed to extract desirable facial features characterized by spatial frequency, spatial locality and orientation selectivity to cope with the variations in illumination and facial expressions, which improves the recognition performance; (2) a recently proposed powerful discriminator, namely CKFD, which enhances its discriminating ability using two kinds of discriminant information (i.e., regular and irregular information), is employed to classify the Gabor features; (3) the FPP models, are employed to CKFD analysis to enhance the discriminating ability. Comparing with existing principal component analysis, linear discriminant analysis, kernel principal component analysis, KFD and CKFD methods, the proposed method gives the superior results with the ORL, Yale and UMIST face databases.

Abstract:Appropriate representation is one of the keys to the success of face recognition technologies. In this paper, we present a novel face representation approach using a reduced set of local histograms based on Local Gabor Binary Patterns (LGBP). In the proposed method, a face image is first represented by the LGBP histograms which are extracted from the LGBP images. Then, the local LGBP histograms with high separability and low relevance are selected to obtain a dimension-reduced face descriptor. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method not only greatly reduces the dimensionality of face representation, but also outperforms the state-of-theart approaches for face recognition, such as Fisherfaces, and Gabor Fisher Classification (GFC).

Abstract:This paper present a novel method for robust illumination-tolerant face recognition based on the Gabor phase and a probabilistic similarity measure. Invited by the work in Eigenphases [1] by using the phase spectrum of face images, we use the phase information of the multi-resolution and multi-orientation Gabor filters. We show that the Gabor phase has more discriminative information and it is tolerate to illumination variations. Then we use a probabilistic similarity measure based on a Bayesian (MAP) analysis of the difference between the Gabor phases of two face images. We train the model using some images in the illumination subset of CMU-PIE database and test on the other images of CMU-PIE database and the Yale B database and get comparative results.

Abstract:A feature extraction method using multi-frequency bands is proposed for face recognition, named as the Multi-band Gradient Component Pattern (MGCP). The MGCP captures discriminative information from Gabor filter responses in virtue of an orthogonal gradient component analysis method, which is especially designed to encode energy variations of Gabor magnitude. Different from some well-known Gabor-based feature extraction methods, MGCP extracts geometry features from Gabor magnitudes in the orthogonal gradient space in a novel way. It is shown that such features encapsulate more discriminative information. The proposed method is evaluated by performing face recognition experiments on the FERET and FRGC ver 2.0 databases and compared with several state-of-the-art approaches. Experimental results demonstrate that MGCP achieves the highest recognition rate among all the compared methods, including some well-known Gabor-based methods.

Abstract:This paper addresses the problem of human detection in still images. We first describe a novel descriptor concatenating the local normalized histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) and the global normalized histogram of census transform (CT) of images for human detection. The detector is trained by using cascade learning method based on AdaBoost. In addition, we propose an easy histogram-based search method, termed the block histogram, which can reduce the computational cost and speed up the process of detection when sliding in the test image. Experimental results on the INRIA person dataset show that the proposed method can achieve competitive results both in discriminating power and detection speed as compared to the state-of-the-art.
Gabor Surface Feature for Face Recognition

Abstract:Gabor filters can extract multi-orientation and multiscale features from face images. Researchers have designed different ways to use the magnitude of the filtered results for face recognition: Gabor Fisher classifier exploited only the magnitude information of Gabor magnitude pictures (GMPs); Local Gabor Binary Pattern uses only the gradient information. In this paper, we regard GMPs as smooth surfaces. By completely describing the shape of GMPs, we get a face representation method called Gabor Surface Feature (GSF). First, we compute the magnitude, 1st and 2nd derivatives of GMPs, then binarize them and transform them into decimal values. Finally we construct joint histograms and use subspace methods for classification. Experiments on FERET, ORL and FRGC 1.0.4 database show the effectiveness of GSF.
V-LGBP: Volume Based Local Gabor Binary Patterns for Face Representation and Recognition

Abstract:In this paper, we propose volume based local Gabor binary patterns (V-LGBP) for face representation and recognition. In our method, the Gabor feature set of each gray image is regarded as a three dimensional ldquovolumerdquo, where the first two dimensions are spatial domain and the third dimension is the Gabor filter index. Then, the neighborhood order relationship in the ldquovolumerdquo is encoded by local binary patterns (LBP), which converts the Gabor transformed images into multiple index maps. Finally, the spatial histograms of all the V-LGBP index maps are concatenated together to represent the facial appearances. In addition, in order to reflect the uniform appearances of V-LGBP, its uniform patterns are redefined via statistical analysis. Extensive experiments on FERET dataset validate the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose Learned Local Gabor Patterns (LLGP) for face representation and recognition. The proposed method is based on Gabor feature and the concept of texton, and defines the feature cliques which appear frequently in Gabor features as the basic patterns. Different from Local Binary Patterns (LBP) whose patterns are predefined, the local patterns in our approach are learned from the patch set, which is constructed by sampling patches from Gabor filtered face images. Thus, the patterns in our approach are face-specific and desirable for face perception tasks. Based on these learned patterns, each facial image is converted into multiple pattern maps and the block-based histograms of these patterns are concatenated together to form the representation of the face image. In addition, we propose an effective weighting strategy to enhance the performances, which makes use of the discriminative powers of different facial parts as well as different patterns. The proposed approach is evaluated on two face databases: FERET and CAS-PEAL-R1. Extensive experimental results and comparisons with existing methods show the effectiveness of the LLGP representation method and the weighting strategy. Especially, heterogeneous testing results show that the LLGP codebook has very impressive generalizability for unseen data.
Robust Feature Extracted by the Generalized Optimal Discriminant Vectors for Face Recognition

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel Gabor direct generalized optimal discriminant vectors (GDG-ODV) method for face recognition (FR). This method can apply directly the generalized optimal discriminant vectors (G-ODV) method that views the optimal set of discriminant vectors as a global transform to the high-dimensional augmented Gabor feature vectors (AGFV) derived from the Gabor wavelet representation of face images. This method has three novelties: 1) it is robust to the facial variations; 2) it can efficiently solve the small sample size problem (SSSP), which widely exists in FR tasks; 3) it can consider the separability of optimal discriminant vectors (ODV) from a global viewpoint. The GDG-ODV method is compared, in terms of classification accuracy, to other common methods on the ORL database. The results indicate that this method is overall superior to those various FR methods.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel descriptor granularity-tunable gradients partition (GGP), for human detection. The concept granularity is used to define the spatial and angular uncertainty of the line segments in the Hough space. Then this uncertainty is backprojected into the image space by orientation-space partitioning to achieve efficient implementation. By changing the granularity parameter the level of uncertainty can be controlled quantitatively. Therefore a family of descriptors with versatile representation property can be generated. Specifically the finely granular GGP descriptors can represent the specific geometry information of the object (the same as Edgelet); while the coarsely granular GGP descriptors can provide the statistical representation of the object (the same as histograms of oriented gradients, HOG). Moreover the position, orientation, strength and distribution of the gradients are embedded into a unified descriptor to further improve the GGP's representation power A cascade structured classifier is built by boosting the linear regression functions. Experimental results on IN-RIA dataset show that the proposed method achieves comparable results to those of the state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel Gabor Generalized Foley-Sammon Transform (GGFST) method for face recognition (FR). The GGFST method can directly apply the generalized Foley-Sammon transform (GFST) method that has the best separable ability in a global sense to the high-dimensional augmented Gabor feature vectors derived from the Gabor wavelet representation of face images. This method has three novelties: 1) the GGFST method is robust to facial variations; 2) the GGFST method can overcome the limitations of traditional FR approaches by incorporating some middle methods as the preprocessing steps for dimension reduction so as to discard some significant discriminatory information; and 3) the GGFST method has the best separable ability in a global sense. The comparative experiments on the ORL database show that the GGFST method is more effective than the previous methods.
