Abstract:Platinum (Pt)-based multi-metallic nanostructures show great promise as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cell cathodes. Herein, we report a simple, one-step surfactant-directed synthetic strategy to directly synthesize tri-metallic PtPdNi mesoporous nanospheres (PtPdNi MNs) in a high yield. The synthesis could be accomplished in aqueous solution at mild reaction temperature (40 degrees C) without needing any organic solvent, yielding well-dispersed PtPdNi MNs with uniform shape and narrow size distribution. Benefitting from their unique mesoporous and highly open structure and tri-metallic composition, the as-synthesized PtPdNi MNs demonstrate superior catalytic activity and stability for ORR in acidic solution in comparison with PtPdNi nanodendrites (PtPdNi NDs), PtPd MNs and commercial Pt/C catalyst. Intermetallic Pd3Pb Ultrathin Nanoplate-Constructed Flowers with Low-Coordinated Edge Sites Boost Oxygen Reduction Performance

Abstract:Although tremendous efforts have been devoted to exploring non-Pt based electrocatalysts toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), achievements in both catalytic activity and durability are still far from satisfactory. Here, we report a facile approach for the synthesis of intermetallic Pd3Pb ultrathin nanoplate-constructed flowers. Such highly opened hierarchical nanostructures with an ordered phase and low-coordinated edge sites exhibited a substantially enhanced activity toward the ORR. Especially, the intermetallic Pd3Pb nanoflowers achieved a record-breaking mass activity (1.14 mA μgPd-1) in an alkaline solution at 0.9 V vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode among the reported Pd-based ORR electrocatalysts to date, which was 1.8, 3.9 and 11.4 times higher than those of intermetallic Pd3Pb nanocubes, Pd3Pb dendrites and commercial Pt/C, respectively. More importantly, the intermetallic Pd3Pb nanoflowers also showed a higher durability with only 23.7% loss in mass activity after 10 000 cycles compared to the commercial Pt/C (35% loss in mass activity) due to their chemically stable intermetallic structures.

Abstract:Pd is generally regarded as an alternative catalyst material to Pt for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, its catalytic activity and durability are much lower than those of Pt. Here, we report a facile approach for the synthesis of intermetallic Pd3Pb square nanoplates enclosed by {100} facets. The use of oleylamine (OAm), oleic acid (OA), and 1-octadecene (ODE) played important roles in the formation of the Pd3Pb intermetallic square nanoplates in high-quality. The Pd3Pb square nanoplates exhibited substantially enhanced ORR properties in terms of activity and durability. In particular, such nanoplates showed higher mass activity (0.62 mA g(Pd)(-1)) and specific activity (3.59 mA cm(-2)), which were 10.3 and 32.6 times higher than those of the commercial Pt/C, respectively, due to ligand and geometry effects. Significantly, the Pd3Pb square nanoplates/C were highly stable with 23% loss in specific activity and 21% loss in mass activity after 10000 cycles compared to the Pd3Pb alloy dendritic nanocrystals/C (over 50% loss in specific and mass activities) due to their unique intermetallic structure with high chemical stability.
Multimetallic AuPd@Pd@Pt Core-Interlayer-shell Icosahedral Electrocatalysts for Highly Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Incorporating Pt with core metals into Pt-based core-shell catalysts is regarded as a promising strategy to substantially enhance the catalytic properties towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells due to the synergetic effect between distinct metals. In this wok, ultrathin Pt skins with two atomic layers were epitaxially coated on as-prepared icosahedral Au50Pd50, Au60Pd40 and Au-66 Pd-34 nanocrystal seeds, which are constructed with alloyed cores and Pd shells with different thickness. Through electron microscopic characterizations, Pd interlayers with tunable thickness of 3, 6, and 12 atomic layers can be found in the Au66Pd34@Pt, Au60Pd40@Pt and Au50Pd50@Pt icosahedra, respectively. These icosahedral AuPd@Pd@Pt nanocrystals show substantially enhanced activities and durabilities in electrocatalytic measurements towards ORR compared to Au75Pd25@Pt icosahedra without Pd interlayer and commercial Pt/C catalysts. Specifically, Au-60 Pd-40@Pt icosahedra with 6 atomically thick Pd interlayer display the best electrocatalytic performances, whose mass activities before and after durability tests of 50,000 cycles are 11.6 and 30.2 times, respectively, as high as that of the commercial Pt/C. Abstract:Pd‐based nanoalloys are promising electrocatalysts for replacing Pt‐based ones toward oxygen reduction reaction. Despite that great progress has been achieved, universally synthesizing Pd‐based alloy nanosheets and further integrating them into porous or hierarchical superstructures remain a challenge, and their ORR performances are not systematically investigated. Herein, novel ultrathin and highly wrinkled Pd‐M (M = Cr, Mo, W) alloy nanosheets flower‐like superstructures (NSFSs) are universally fabricated via a polyether and small molecules/ions ligand assisted solvothermal strategy. Such Pd‐M NSFSs possess mesoporous structures and co‐exist single‐atom‐like and cluster‐like M species on their surfaces. Compared with pure Pd NSFSs, those Pd‐M NSFSs show greatly enhanced ORR activity in alkaline media. Due to unique microstructure feature, proper alloy constituent and stronger interatomic polarization or electronic coupling, the Pd‐W NSFSs show the highest ORR activity with the half‐wave potential of 0.89 V ( vs . RHE) and mass activity of 0.46 A mg Pd ‐1 at 0.90 V ( vs . RHE), outperforming commercial Pt/C, and most of reported Pd(or Pt)‐based catalysts. Moreover, the Pd‐W NSFSs manifest outstanding durability and anti‐CO poisoning ability yet. This work may spur the development of 2D Pd‐based nanoalloy superstructures, and promote their applications in fuel cells or other clean energy fields.

Abstract:In addition to activity, durability of Pd-based catalysts in a highly corrosive medium has become one of the most important barriers to limit their industrial applications such as low-temperature fuel cell technologies. Here, Rh with a unique capability to resist against oxidation etching was incorporated into Pd-based catalysts to enhance both their activity and durability for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This idea was achieved through the synthesis of the Rh-Pd alloy nanodendrites by co-reducing Rh and Pd salt precursors in oleylamine (OAm) containing cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). In this synthesis, Rh-Pd alloy nanostructures with Rh-Pd atomic ratios from 19 : 1 to 1 : 4 were generated by varying the molar ratios of Rh and Pd salt precursors. Interestingly, this variation of the molar ratios of the precursors from Rh rich to Pd rich would lead to the shape evolution of Rh-Pd alloy from dendritic nanostructures to spherical aggregations. We found that Br- ions derived from CTAB were also indispensible to the production of Rh-Pd alloy nanodendrites. Owing to the addition of highly stable Rh as well as the radical structure with a large number of low-coordinated sites on the arms, Rh-Pd alloy nanodendrites with a Rh-Pd atomic ratio of 4 : 1 (Rh80Pd20) exhibited a substantially enhanced electrocatalytic performance towards ORR with a 5% loss of mass activity during the accelerated stability test for 10 000 cycles compared to similar to 50% loss of the commercial Pt/C (E-TEK).

Abstract:Developing electrocatalysts with high-Pt-utilization efficiency and appropriate surface oxygen affinity through a facile and scalable route is urgently needed for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Here, SPD-annealing strategy is demonstrated to prepare ordered low-Pt-loading Pd-Pt-Fe nanoalloys with an average particle size of less than 5 nm and excellent electrocatalytic performance. Furthermore, the ORR performances of Pd-Pt-Fe/C nanoalloy catalysts are rationally modified by means of both precise composition control and structural transformation. With an optimal component proportion, the prepared Pd0.75Pt0.25 Fe/C catalyst exhibits the most excellent intrinsic activity due to the synergistic interaction of lattice strain and ligand effect. Benefiting from the compressive strain effect induced by the relatively tight arrangement of the ordered structure, the adsorption energy of the intermediate oxygen-containing species is effectively weakened, enabling the Pd0.75Pt0.25 Fe/C to obtain enhanced ORR catalytic performance in acidic condition. Notably, compared with the disordered Pd0.75Pt0.25 Fe/C, the ordered Pd-0.75 Pt-0.25 Fe/C shows an extremely superior stability of 98.5% mass activity retention after 10 000 cycles. Molybdenum‐doped Ordered L10‐PdZn Nanosheets for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysis

Abstract:Abstract Ultrathin Pd‐based two‐dimensional (2D) nanosheets (NSs) with tunable physicochemical properties have emerged as promising candidate for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Unfortunately, structurally ordered Pd‐based NSs can be hardly prepared as high temperature annealing (>600°C) is necessary for disorder to order phase transition, making it a considerable challenge for morphology control. Herein, a new class of ultrathin structurally ordered Mo‐doped L10‐PdZn NSs with curved geometry and abundant defects/lattice distortions is reported as an efficient oxygen reduction electrocatalyst in alkaline solution. It is found that Mo(CO)6 serves as reducing agent and Mo source to generate the unique ordered 2D morphology, which leads to the significantly modified electronic structure. The developed L10‐Mo‐PdZn NSs exhibit excellent ORR mass activity of 2.6 A mgPd−1 at 0.9 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, 31.5 and 17.6 times higher than those of Pd/C and Pt/C, respectively, outperforming most of the reported Pd‐based ORR electrocatalsyts. Impressively, L10‐Mo‐PdZn NSs is extremely stable for ORR, with only 2.3% activity loss after 10 000 potential cycles. Density functional theory study suggests that ordered L10 structure and Mo doping can raise the vacancy formation energy of Pd atom and thus promote the ORR stability.

Abstract:Porous Pt-based nanostructures are highly promising electrocatalysts for fuel cells, because of their high catalytic surface area and sufficient catalytically active sites. Herein, we adopt a facile method in aqueous solution to synthesize the Au@PtPd mesoporous nanorod (Au@PtPd MNR) in which a Au nanorod (NR) serves as core, and mesoporous PtPd acts as shell. Because of the mesoporous core–shell structure and composition effect, Au@PtPd MNR exhibits superior catalytic activity and durability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), as compared with PtPd mesoporous sphere (MS), Au@Pt MNR, and commercial Pt/C catalyst. This synthetic strategy is appropriate for preparation of other mesoporous core–shell structures for various promising applications.
Biphase Pd Nanosheets with Atomic-Hybrid RhOx/Pd Amorphous Skins Disentangle the Activity-Stability Trade-Off in Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:The activity-stability trade-off relationship of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a tricky issue that strikes the electrocatalyst population and hinders the widespread application of fuel cells. Here neoteric biphase Pd nanosheets that are structured with ultrathin two-dimensional crystalline Pd inner cores and ≈1 nm thin atomic-hybrid RhOx/Pd amorphous skins, named c/a-Pd@PdRh NSs, for disentangling this trade-off dilemma for alkaline ORR are developed. The superthin amorphous skins significantly amplify the quantity of flexibly low-coordinated atoms for electrocatalysis. An in situ selected oxidation of the top-surface Rh dopants creates atomically hybrid RhOx/Pd disorder surfaces. Detailed energy spectra and theoretical simulation confirm that these RhOx/Pd interfaces can arouse a surface charge redistribution, causing significant electron deficiency and lowered d-band center for surface Pd. Meanwhile, anticorrosive Rh/RhOx species can thermodynamically passivate the neighboring Pd atoms from oxidative dissolution. Thanks to these amplified interfacial effects, the biphase c/a-Pd@PdRh NSs simultaneously exhibit a superhigh ORR activity (5.92 A mg-1, 22.8 times that of Pt/C) and an outstanding long-lasting stability after 100k cycles of accelerated durability test, showcasing unprecedented electrocatalysts for breaking the activity-stability trade-off relationship of ORR. This work paves a bran-new strategy for designing high-performance electrocatalysts through creating modulated amorphous skins on low-dimensional nanomaterials.

Abstract:Even though extensive efforts have been devoted to pursue promising electrocatalysts, the design of high-efficiency and low-cost electrocatalysts continues to be a formidable challenge for commercializing electrochemical energy technologies. Herein, we report the successful creation of a class of three-dimensional ordered Pd3Pb nanosheet assemblies (NSAs) via a wet-chemical approach. Such controlled nanostructures with ordered phase and highly open structure exhibit enhanced electrochemical activity and durability for both the anodic methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In particular, the ordered Pd3Pb NSAs show ORR mass and specific activities of 0.697 A mg(pd)(-1) and 0.989 mA cm(-2) at 0.90 V versusthe reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), which are 8.3 (10.9) and 7.5 (6.4) times higher than those of the commercial Pt/C (Pd/C), respectively, making them among the most efficient catalysts ever achieved for Pd-based ORR catalysts to date. In addition, the ordered Pd3Pb NSAs can even sustain at least 20000 potential cycles with limited activity decay and structure change.

Abstract:The catalytic activities of noble-metal electrocatalysts are heavily correlated to their defective surface structures. However, controllably constructing surface defects on noble-metal nanocrystals remains a great challenge. In this work, an electrochemical method is developed to tailor the surface structure of the PdMo nanoalloy electrocatalyst, involving H absorption followed by its subsequent release near the surface of Pd. The optimized PdMo nanoalloy electrocatalyst exhibits an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) half-wave potential (E-1/2) of 0.929 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE) with a specific activity (SA) as high as 5.09 mA/cm(2) at 0.9 V (vs RHE) in an alkaline electrolyte, similar to 10.6 times that of the state-of-the-art Pt/C electrocatalyst. Density functional theory calculations together with ex situ and in situ electrochemical and structural characterizations unravel that the microstrain generated at the PdMo nanoalloy surface by electrochemically induced H absorption-release can downshift the d-band center of Pd (the ORR active site) in PdMo to decrease oxygen binding and promote *OOH to *O transformation as well as *OH desorption for fast ORR. This work provides a surface defect engineering strategy to develop high-performance noble-metal electrocatalysts for energy applications.
Design of Ultrathin Pt-Based Multimetallic Nanostructures for Efficient Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Nanocatalysts with high platinum (Pt) utilization efficiency are attracting extensive attention for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) conducted at the cathode of fuel cells. Ultrathin Pt-based multimetallic nanostructures show obvious advantages in accelerating the sluggish cathodic ORR due to their ultrahigh Pt utilization efficiency. A focus on recent important developments is provided in using wet chemistry techniques for making/tuning the multimetallic nanostructures with high Pt utilization efficiency for boosting ORR activity and durability. First, new synthetic methods for multimetallic core/shell nanoparticles with ultrathin shell sizes for achieving highly efficient ORR catalysts are reviewed. To obtain better ORR activity and stability, multimetallic nanowires or nanosheets with well-defined structure and surface are further highlighted. Furthermore, ultrathin Pt-based multimetallic nanoframes that feature 3D molecularly accessible surfaces for achieving more efficient ORR catalysis are discussed. Finally, the remaining challenges and outlooks for the future will be provided for this promising research field.
Large-Scale Atomic Strain Defects on Palladium Surfaces for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction and Zinc-Air Batteries

Abstract:Designing nano-electrocatalysts rich in surface defects is critical to improve their catalytic performance. However, prevailing synthesis techniques rely heavily on complex procedures that compromise defect extensiveness and uniformity, casting a high demand for methods capable of synthesizing large-scale crystalline defects. An innovative design strategy is herein proposed that induces ample strain/dislocation defects during the growth of palladium (Pd), which is well-known as a good oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst. The controlled defect engineering on Pd core is achieved by the tensile stress exerted from an intentionally applied Fe3O4 skin layer during synthesis, which changes the surface free energy of Pd to stabilize the defect presence. With such large-scale crystalline defects, this Pd catalyst exhibits significantly higher ORR activity than commercial Pt/C, enabling its promising future in zinc-air battery catalysis. Additionally, the protective Fe3O4 skin covering the catalyst also enhances its catalytic stability. Theoretical calculations show that the superior catalytic property of such defect-engineered Pd is associated with the correspondingly modified adsorption energy of *O intermediates onto its surface, which further improves the reaction rate and thus boosts ORR kinetics. Findings here are expected to provide a paradigm for designing efficient and stable metal catalysts with plentiful large-scale strain defects.

Enhanced O2 Reduction on Atomically Thin Pt-based Nanoshells by Integrating Surface Facet, Interfacial Electronic, and Substrate Stabilization Effects

Abstract:To fully realize the commercial viability of Pt in fuel cells, the usage of scarce Pt must be reduced while the activity and durability in O-2 reduction reaction (ORR) must be enhanced. Here we report a metallic stack design achieving these goals for ORR, based on atomically precise materials synthesis. Au@Pd@Pt nanostructures with atomically thin Pt shells and high-index surfaces form an excellent platform for integrating the effects of electronic structures, surface facets, and substrate stabilization to boost ORR performance. Au@Pd@Pt trisoctahedrons (TOH) achieve mass activity 6.1 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C and dramatically enhanced durability beyond 1.0 V vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode in oxidation potential. Meanwhile, Pt comprises only 3.2% of the nanostructures. To further improve the ORR activity and demonstrate the versatility of our strategy, we implement the same design in PtNi alloy electrocatalysts. The Au@Pd@PtNi TOHs exhibit mass activity 14.3 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C as well as excellent durability. This work demonstrates an alternative strategy for fabricating high-performance and low-cost catalysts, and highlights the importance of simultaneous surface and interfacial engineering with atomic precision in designing catalysts.

Abstract:Core/shell nanocatalysts have been regarded as potential catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) occurring at the cathode of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Notably, core/shell segregated nanocatalysts exhibit improved activity and stability compared with alloyed nanocatalysts because of the high noble metal utilization and electronic modification effect. Herein, we report that the ORR activity and stability of PtAuSn core/shell ternary nanorod catalysts are fine-structure-dependent in which AuSnOx-decorated Pt catalysts can reach a high ORR mass activity of 1069 mA/mgPt at 0.85 V (IR-free). Moreover, the x-decorated Pt catalysts with a surface SnOx protective layer show high ORR stability after an accelerated durability test of 10,000 cycles, which yet maintain a high mass activity (251 mA/mgPt). Abstract:The design of active and durable cathodic electrocatalysts is critical for practical fuel cell applications. Although Pd is a promising candidate to replace Pt for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), it usually suffers from lower activity. Here, a two-step method is reported to synthesize tungsten–palladium bimetallic hydrides with a porous nanosheet assembly structure (WPd–H NSAs) as high-performance ORR electrocatalysts. The introduction of H atoms to Pd and curved porous nanosheet structures can induce the strain and electronic effects, leading to the weaker binding energy of O on Pd. The WPd–H NSAs show a superior ORR activity of 1.51 mA μgPd –1, 10.43 times that of Pt/C. This hydrogenation approach would open the way to design high-efficiency palladium-based nanomaterials with controlled morphology for ORR.

Interfacial oxygen atom modification of a PdSn alloy to boost oxygen reduction in zinc-air batteries

Abstract:Modifying the surface of a catalyst with heteroatoms can regulate the interfacial atomic valence state and adjust the charge distribution, which is promising for obtaining desirable platinum carbon catalyst (Pt/C)-matched oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic performance. Here, we developed an efficient method to access O-rich crystalline interfacial-exposed palladium-tin alloy (111) crystal surfaces [Pd3Sn (111)] for highly efficient ORR via direct reduction of Pd/Sn metal salt species that are well dispersed in a nitrogen, phosphorus-doped carbonaceous (NPC) substrate. In addition to the other materials, preembedded Pd/Sn metal salt species in NPC control the release of metal sources upon reduction in the liquid phase, resulting in the grafting of an as-prepared PdSn alloy with many merits, such as efficient electron conduction, short-range crystallinity and increased crystal interface exposure. The presence of a considerable quantity of oxygen atoms at the interface of small-sized PdSn alloys on NPC substrates has been methodically verified by powder X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterizations. The PdSn-O sample exhibited excellent ORR activity, achieving an onset potential of ∼0.99 V and a half-wave potential of ∼0.88 V at 1600 rpm in O2-saturated 1.0 M KOH. Density functional theory simulations of pure Pd, Pd-O, the PdSn alloy and PdSn-O suggest that interfacial oxygen atom modification is responsible for the significantly improved ORR activity. The assembled zinc-air battery provides a high specific power of 218.9 mW cm-2 and a specific capacity of 810.6 mAh gZn-1. Our approach has the potential to stimulate the preparation of O-rich crystalline interfacial-exposed alloy compounds for other energy conversion applications.
