Abstract:The optimization problem of maximizing the throughput of a regular multi-radio, multi-channel wireless mesh network is addressed in this paper. Given certain network topology and traffic demands, by jointly considering power control, channel assignment and scheduling, we study how to maximize the network throughput under fairness constraint. Based on graph theory, the problem is divided into several sub-problems, which can be formulated as linear programming. It is proved that the solutions of these sub-problems will lead to the global optimal solution to our problem. However, the computational complexity of the above algorithm is O(2n) as it needs to traverse all possible scenarios. Therefore, a suboptimal algorithm is proposed to achieve a complexity of O(n) at the cost of moderate performance degradation. Simulation results show that the suboptimal algorithm solves the problem much faster, while the performance degradation is less than 8%, in comparison with the optimal one.

Abstract:The joint optimization problem of maximizing throughput of multi-interface multi-channel random mesh network was addressed. The problem was formulated into a linear programming (LP) problem by analyzing the constraint models of routing, channel assignment and scheduling on the premise of proportional fairness. Low complexity algorithms were further proposed to derive lower and upper capacity bounds. Simulation results show that the lower/upper bound ratios were all above 85% under different number of available channels, interfaces and gateways in a 25-node random network. Then capacity laws with respect to all the factors were further studied. One interface can utilize several channels and edge effect on capacity grows less as gateway number grows.

Abstract:In this paper, we address the problem of joint channel assignment, link scheduling, and routing for throughput optimization in wireless networks with multi-radios and multi-channels. We mathematically formulate this problem by taking into account the interference, the number of available radios the set of usable channels, and other resource constraints at nodes. We also consider the possible combining of several consecutive channels into one so that a network interface card (NIC) can use the channel with larger range of frequencies and thus improve the channel capacity. Furthermore, we consider several interference models and assume a general yet practical network model in which two nodes may still not communicate directly even if one is within the transmission range of the other. We designed efficient algorithm for throughput (or fairness) optimization by finding flow routing, scheduling of transmissions, and dynamic channel assignment and combining. We show that the performance, fairness and throughput, achieved by our method is within a constant factor of the optimum. Our model also can deal with the situation when each node will charge a certain amount for relaying data to a neighboring node and each flow has a budget constraint. Our extensive evaluation shows that our algorithm can effectively exploit the number of channels and radios. In addition, it shows that combining multiple channels and assigning them to a single user at some time slots indeed increases the maximum throughput of the system compared to assigning a single channel.

Abstract:In this paper, the problem of resource allocation in an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access-based Cognitive Wireless Mesh Network (CWMN) is addressed. The objective is to maximize the total utilities in a CWMN, which is defined as any increasing, concave and twice differentiable function of the end-to-end flow rate, by jointly allocating each link’s rate, power and subchannels under the constraints of multiple primary users’ Interference Temperature and multiple access interference. First, a centralized resource allocation algorithm is developed based on the Column Generation approach, and shown to be optimal. So it can perform as a criterion for designing other algorithms. Secondly, considering the applicability of algorithm in distributed system, a near-optimal distributed algorithm is proposed, which allocates subchannel based on routing information at first, and then jointly allocates the resource of rate and power. Finally, the simulation results validate the centralized and distributed algorithms, and show that better performance can be achieved than the conventional algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, adaptive radio resource allocation for heterogeneous traffics with different quality of service (QoS) requirements is studied. The optimization problem is formulated as to maximize the overall system throughput while satisfying the transmit rate requirements of realtime users under the constraints of total transmit power and available bandwidth. Investigation into the problem shows that there exits an optimal tradeoff between the power usage and bandwidth usage for both realtime users and non-realtime users. It is also shown that the optimal resource allocation can be obtained when the spectrum efficiencies achieved by both realtime users and non-realtime users are equal. Based on this observation, a joint bandwidth and power allocation algorithm to the optimization problem is proposed. Numerical simulation is carried out to evaluate the performance and the results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms existing resource allocation schemes with a small computational burden.

Abstract:This paper investigates the utility maximization problem for the downlink of the multi-interface multichannel wireless mesh network with orthogonal frequency division multiple access. A cross-layer joint power and multiple access control algorithm are proposed. Rosen projection matrix is combined with Solodov projection techniques to build a three-memory gradient Rosen projection method, which is applied to solve this optimization problem. The convergence analysis is given and simulations show that the proposed solution achieves significant throughput compared with existing approaches.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed a rapid growth of WiFi pervasively applied in multimedia content distribution. WiFi multicast is widely applied in user-dense scenarios where the spectrum resource is insufficient. Moreover, existing access point (AP) selection and channel allocation algorithms lack in-depth study on per-user throughput requirements. This paper proposes a joint optimization of AP selection and channel allocation method for multi-priority WLAN transmissions to maximize the various users’ weighted throughput satisfaction rate. In this method, we first design a 0-1 integer nonlinear programming model to describe the AP selection and channel allocation problem in the scenario of a WiFi multicast task and other tasks with different priorities. Moreover, to lower the complexity of solving mixed-integer nonlinear programming problems, we design a heuristic algorithm to obtain high-efficiency solutions.

Abstract:The relation among maximum retransmission times,power in every transmission,sub-packet length,modulation bits,coding rate in hybrid automatic repeat request(HARQ) transmission mode and the system throughput was studied.A feed-back mode with channel parameters was proposed based on IEEE 802.16e protocol to enhance the throughput of wireless transmission system.The constraint of power allocation and packet error rate in the mode was given,which is different from that in transmission mode with fixed parameters.A model under additive white Gaussian noise channel was established to analyze the influence on the throughput caused by different parameters and the corresponding optimization dependent on certain parameter.A sub-optimal algorithm was proposed to adaptively update parameters.Simulation results show that the algorithm can achieve much higher system performance than the traditional algorithm with constant parameters.The system throughput dynamically increases when channel condition gets better.The algorithm can get high system throughput with low complexity when channel condition can be precisely detected by the receiver.

Abstract:Network topology does not change dynamically in wireless mesh networks. Most of the end-to-end traffic flows are between mesh nodes and gateways. A tree-base routing algorithm is suitable for such network architecture. When using multichannel and multi-interface, routing algorithm and channel assignment is codependent. They should be combined together to fully exploit the network capacity. We propose a tree-based joint routing and channel assignment protocol with a new routing metric and a new channel assignment algorithm based on Hyacinth. Simulation result shows that the new protocol outperforms Hyacinth on network cross-section goodput and end-to-end delay.

Abstract:Cooperative communication is shown to be a promising technology to enhance the capacity of wireless transmission without additional equipments. Under this communication paradigm, both relay selection and power allocation significantly affect the overall system performance. Thus, this paper studies the joint power allocation and relay assignment problem to optimize the Max-Min fairness of cooperative network. We first analyze the trade-off between the bandwidth provision and power consumption for different communication schemes. According to the analytic results, a heuristic algorithm PRF is designed to determine the fairness factor with the binary searching. The analyses show that PRF algorithm can obtain the approximate ratio 1− ξ, where ξ is an arbitrarily small positive constant. Meanwhile, this paper also presents another heuristic algorithm JFAP, which uses the offer-and-gain mechanism to reach the Max-Min fairness. The simulation results show that PRF and JFAP algorithms can improve the fairness factor at least 36% and 32% compared with the direct transmission scheme in many situations.

Abstract:The optimization problems for transmission performance of wireless mesh networks(WMN) focus on the issues as system throughput,average delay and transmission fairness,etc.It is an NP-hard problem.This paper proposed an iterative optimization algorithm based on heuristic and primal-dual algorithms which optimize the system throughput under the constraints of channel-radio and link capacity.It also analyzed the convergence of the proposed algorithm.The simulations show that this algorithm can largely increase the system throughput of WMN.

Abstract:To improve the radio throughput, novel radio access techniques need to be designed. With exploiting the multiuser diversity at power domain, nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is one promising candidate technique for sixth-generation (6G). In this article, a downlink joint device assignment and power allocation problem is investigated in multihoming heterogeneous multicarrier NOMA networks. The joint device assignment and power allocation problem maximizes the network throughput with total power constraint at each base station, required minimum transmission rate for each device, and maximum number of accessed devices at each subchannel. Since the joint device assignment and power allocation problem is a mixed-integer nonlinear problem, the original optimization problem is divided into a device assignment subproblem and a power allocation subproblem. Then, the greedy method is applied to propose a device assignment algorithm, and successive convex approximation theory is adopted to design a power allocation algorithm. Finally, an iterative joint device assignment and power allocation algorithm is proposed. Numerical simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can improve the throughput and the average satisfactory of devices compared with other algorithms significantly.

Abstract:Bandwidth allocation and cooperative communication are two efficient ways for throughput optimisation in wireless mesh networks (WMNs). Accordingly, this paper pursues the throughput maximisation under all-to-one communication scene through cooperative communication and bandwidth allocation. As relay assignment plays an important role for cooperative communication, we first define the joint relay assignment and bandwidth allocation (JRB) problem, which is formulated into the integer program. As NP-Hardness, this paper then presents a distributed algorithm TRBA to solve the JRB problem. The analyses show that the proposed algorithm can reach the approximate performance of O(1) for the JRB problem. Moreover, another algorithm, called ITRBA, is proposed to improve the average throughput of all mesh nodes while still preserving the max-min fairness. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms can almost reach the same throughput as the optimal method, and improves the network throughputs about 20.0% more than that of the traditional method.

Abstract:Concerning the problem of decrease in Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) throughput caused by channel interference, this paper proposes a new multi-channel allocation strategy based on the interference model. This strategy first stratifies WMN and then allocates channels according to the priority of layers. By alleviating channel interference of the network, it promotes each node's throughput in WMN and thus to increase the network throughput. The simulation results show that the strategy is efficient.

Abstract:With the unique features of spatial multiplexing and interference suppression, Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) techniques have great potential in the improvement of network capacity over conventional antenna technologies. In order to exploit the benefit of simultaneous transmissions provided by MIMO, researchers have proposed a number of cross-layer optimizations and MAC layer designs to increase the throughput of wireless mesh or ad hoc networks, where the number of elements in the antenna arrays are pre-allocated or evenly assigned to the routers. In this paper, we argue that using the same number of elements in each antenna array in all routers is not a necessary condition for the improvement of system performance. This is because the requirement for the number of elements is quite different for each router. Especially at those critical routers that have huge aggregate traffic toward the gateway, more elements are needed not only for the traffic relay but also for the interference suppression. Based on this observation, we define the joint problem of bandwidth allocation, element assignment and scheduling to characterize the throughput benefits of cross-layer optimizations. We propose a Cost-Aware Element Assignment (CAEA) technique to minimize the total number of the antenna elements when still achieving the optimal bandwidth allocation. In addition, to verify the efficiency of the CAEA assignment, a heuristic Traffic-aware Stream-controlled Link Scheduling (TSLS) algorithm is proposed to provide a schedulable bandwidth allocation. We demonstrate through extensive simulations that our solutions (CAEA, TSLS) not only effectively save the total cost on antenna elements but also perform close to optimal on the average.

Abstract:In this paper, a cross-layer analytical framework is proposed to analyze the throughput and packet delay of a two-hop wireless link in wireless mesh network (WMN). It considers the adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) process in physical layer and the traffic queuing process in upper layers, taking into account the traffic distribution changes at the output node of each link due to the AMC process therein. Firstly, we model the wireless fading channel and the corresponding AMC process as a finite state Markov chain (FSMC) serving system. Then, a method is proposed to calculate the steady-state output traffic of each node. Based on this, we derive a modified queuing FSMC model for the relay to gateway link, which consists of a relayed non-Poisson traffic and an originated Poisson traffic, thus to evaluate the throughput at the mesh gateway. This analytical framework is verified by numerical simulations, and is easy to extend to multi-hop links. Furthermore, based on the above proposed cross-layer framework, we consider the problem of optimal power and bandwidth allocation for QoS-guaranteed services in a two-hop wireless link, where the total power and bandwidth resources are both sum-constrained. Secondly, the practical optimal power allocation algorithm and optimal bandwidth allocation algorithm are presented separately. Then, the problem of joint power and bandwidth allocation is analyzed and an iterative algorithm is proposed to solve the problem in a simple way. Abstract:In wireless powered communication networks (WPCNs), different channel states of energy harvesting and information transfer result in the large gap of throughput performance between user nodes. In this paper, the multi-user cooperation was used to improve the throughput fairness in the WPCN. We discuss one important fairness problem called the max-min throughput problem with resource allocation. The problem is modeled as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming. Although it is hard to be solved by existing methods, we use a branch and bound method based on the piece-wise linear method to obtain the lower bound. The simulation results that the proposed method achieves an average of 97% performance gain when path loss component alpha = 3 with random progress method.

Abstract:Wireless mesh networks are deployed as broadband backbones to provide ubiquitous wireless access for residents and local businesses. Utilizing multiple channels has the potential to scale up the system capacity of wireless access networks with delicately designed channel assignment algorithms. In this paper, we consider a static channel assignment in multi- radio multi-channel wireless mesh networks with the objective of maximizing overall end-to-end throughput. We first present an integer linear programming (ILP) optimization model for this static channel assignment problem. Then, by taking into account the "bottleneck links" of multi-hop flows, we propose a flow-aware heuristic scheme, which decompose this ILP problem into a graph coloring subproblem and a linear programming subproblem. Simulation results on ring and grid topologies show that our scheme has significant gain in terms of network throughput.
