Abstract:In this letter, we consider the numerical approximation of a two-dimensional distributed-order time–space fractional reaction–diffusion equation. The time- and space-fractional derivatives are considered in the senses of Caputo and Riesz, respectively. By using the composite mid-point quadrature, the original fractional problem is approximated by a multi-term time–space fractional differential equation. Then the multi-term Caputo fractional derivatives are discretized by the L2-1σ formula. We apply the Legendre–Galerkin spectral method for the spatial approximation. Two numerical experiments with smooth and non-smooth initial conditions, respectively, are performed to illustrate the robustness of the proposed method. The results show that: our scheme can arrive at the spectral accuracy (resp. algebraic accuracy) in space for the problem with smooth (resp. non-smooth) initial condition. For both of these two cases, our scheme can lead to the second-order accuracies in time. Additionally, the convergence rates in both spatial and temporal distributed-order variables are two.

Abstract:In this paper, we design and analyze a novel spectral method for the subdiffusion equation. As it has been known, the solutions of this equation are usually singular near the initial time. Consequently, direct application of the traditional high-order numerical methods is inefficient. We try to overcome this difficulty in a novel approach by combining variable transformation techniques with spectral methods. The idea is to first use suitable variable transformation to re-scale the underlying equation, then construct spectral methods for the re-scaled equation. We establish a new variational framework based on the $\psi$-fractional Sobolev spaces. This allows us to prove the well-posedness of the associated variational problem. The proposed spectral method is based on the variational problem and generalized Jacobi polynomials to approximate the re-scaled fractional differential equation. Our theoretical and numerical investigation show that the proposed method is exponentially convergent for general right hand side functions, even though the exact solution has very limited regularity. Implementation details are also provided, along with a series of numerical examples to show the efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract:Summary Thispaperestablishesadifferenceapproximationontime-spacefractionaladvectiondispersion equations. Based on the difference approximation an ideal numerical example has been solved, and the result is compared with the one of the rigorous time fractional advection-dispersionequation and the rigorous space fractional advection-dispersionequation respectively. The results show: when time fractional order parameter γ=1 or space fractional order parameter α=2, the numerical calculation result of the time-space fractional advection-dispersionequations is in accordance with that of the rigorous time fractional advection-dispersionequation or the rigorous space fractional advection-dispersion equation. The variation law of the result with parameter is also similar to them, that is when γ is smaller, diffusion is slower; when α is smaller, diffusion is faster. The simulation calculation for a practical example indicates that time-space fractional advection-dispersion equations can simulate the skewness and the tail of anomalous diffusion. This paper provides a efficient tool for the research of fractional advection-dispersion equations.

Abstract:We present two new classes of orthogonal functions, log orthogonal functions and generalized log orthogonal functions, which are constructed by applying a $\log $ mapping to Laguerre polynomials. We develop basic approximation theory for these new orthogonal functions, and apply them to solve several typical fractional differential equations whose solutions exhibit weak singularities. Our error analysis and numerical results show that our methods based on the new orthogonal functions are particularly suitable for functions that have weak singularities at one endpoint and can lead to exponential convergence rate, as opposed to low algebraic rates if usual orthogonal polynomials are used.

Abstract:We develop two kinds of numerical schemes to efficiently solve the subdiffusion equation, which is used to describe anomalous subdiffusive transport processes. The time fractional derivative is first discretized by L1-approximation and the Grünwald–Letnikov approximation, respectively. Then we use the orthogonal spline collocation method to approximate the two semi-discretized subdiffusion equations. The stability and convergence of time semi-discretization and full discretization schemes are both established strictly for the two schemes. Both of them are unconditionally stable. Numerically the convergent orders in space (including the solution and its first derivative) are four for the Hermite cubic spline approximation, and theoretically we get that at least the solution itself has a fourth order convergent rate. Extensive numerical results are presented to show the convergent order and robustness of the numerical schemes.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct an efficient Hermite–Galerkin spectral method for the nonlinear reaction–diffusion equations with distributed-order fractional Laplacian in multidimensional unbounded domains. By applying Gauss–Legendre quadrature rule for the distributed integral term, we first approximate the original distributed-order fractional problem by the multi-term fractional-in-space differential equation. Applying Hermite–Galerkin spectral method in space and backward difference method in time, we establish semi-implicit fully discrete scheme. For two- and three-dimensional cases of the original fractional problem, the linear systems are solved by the preconditioned conjugate gradients method. The main advantage of our method is that the original fractional problem is directly solved in the unbounded domains, thus avoiding the errors introduced by the domain truncations. The stability analysis is rigourously established, which shows that our scheme is unconditionally stable under suitable assumption on the nonlinear term. Several numerical examples are presented to validate both stability and accuracy of the numerical method. The numerical results of the fractional Allen–Cahn, Gray–Scott, and Belousov–Zhabotinskii models show that our semi-implicit methods produce good numerical solutions.

Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations

Abstract:In this article, we propose an implicit pseudospectral scheme for nonlinear time fractional reaction–diffusion equations with Neumann boundary conditions, which is based upon Gauss–Lobatto–Legendre–Birkhoff pseudospectral method in space and finite difference method in time. A priori estimate of numerical solution is given firstly. Then the existence of numerical solution is proved by Brouwer fixed point theorem and the uniqueness is obtained. It is proved rigorously that the fully discrete scheme is unconditionally stable and convergent. Furthermore, we develop a modified scheme by adding correction terms for the problem with nonsmooth solutions. Numerical examples are given to verify the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to develop an efficient finite difference/Hermite-Galerkin spectral method for the time-fractional nonlinear reaction-diffusion equation in unbounded domains with one, two, and three spatial dimensions. For this purpose, we employ the L2 - 1(sigma) formula to discretize the temporal Caputo derivative. Additionally, we apply the Hermite-Galerkin spectral method with scaling factor for the approximation in space. The stability of the fully discrete scheme is established to show that our method is unconditionally stable. Numerical experiments including one-, two-, and three-dimensional cases of the problem are carried out to verify the accuracy of our scheme. The scheme is showcased by solving two problems of practical interest, including the fractional Allen-Cahn and Gray-Scott models, together with an analysis of the properties of the fractional orders. Abstract:For the first time in literature, semi-implicit spectral approximations for nonlinear Caputo time- and Riesz space-fractional diffusion equations with both smooth and non-smooth solutions are proposed. More precisely, the governing partial differential equation generalizes the Hodgkin–Huxley, the Allen–Cahn and the Fisher–Kolmogorov–Petrovskii–Piscounov equations. The schemes employ a Legendre-based Galerkin spectral method for the Riesz space-fractional derivative, and <i>L</i>1-type approximations with both uniform and graded meshes for the Caputo time-fractional derivative. More importantly, by using fractional Gronwall inequalities and their associated discrete forms, sharp error estimates are proved which show an enhancement in the convergence rate compared with the standard <i>L</i>1 approximation on uniform meshes. This analysis encompasses both uniform meshes as well as meshes that are graded in time, and guarantees the unconditional stability. The numerical results that accompany our analysis confirm our theoretical error estimates, and give significant insights into the convergence behavior of our schemes for problems with smooth and non-smooth solutions.

Abstract:Generalized fractional operators are generalization of the Riemann-Liouville and Caputo fractional derivatives, which include Erdélyi-Kober and Hadamard operators as their special cases. Due to the complicated form of the kernel and weight function in the convolution, it is even harder to design high order numerical methods for differential equations with generalized fractional operators. In this paper, we first derive analytical formulas for α-th (α>0) order fractional derivative of Jacobi polynomials. Spectral approximation method is proposed for generalized fractional operators through a variable transform technique. Then, operational matrices for generalized fractional operators are derived and spectral collocation methods are proposed for differential and integral equations with different fractional operators. At last, the method is applied to generalized fractional ordinary differential equation and Hadamard-type integral equations, and exponential convergence of the method is confirmed. Further, based on the proposed method, a kind of generalized grey Brownian motion is simulated and properties of the model are analyzed.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we solve the variable-coefficient fractional diffusion-wave equation in a bounded domain by the Legendre spectral method. The time fractional derivative is in the Caputo sense of order $\gamma \in (1,2)$ γ ∈ ( 1 , 2 ) . We propose two fully discrete schemes based on finite difference in temporal and Legendre spectral approximations in spatial discretization. For the first scheme, we discretize the time fractional derivative directly by the $L_{1}$ L 1 approximation coupled with the Crank–Nicolson technique. For the second scheme, we transform the equation into an equivalent form with respect to the Riemann–Liouville fractional integral operator. We give a rigorous analysis of the stability and convergence of the two fully discrete schemes. Numerical examples are carried out to verify the theoretical results.

A sparse spectral method for fractional differential equations in one-spatial dimension

Abstract:We develop a sparse spectral method for a class of fractional differential equations, posed on $\mathbb{R}$, in one dimension. These equations can include sqrt-Laplacian, Hilbert, derivative and identity terms. The numerical method utilizes a basis consisting of weighted Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind in conjunction with their Hilbert transforms. The former functions are supported on $[-1,1]$ whereas the latter have global support. The global approximation space can contain different affine transformations of the basis, mapping $[-1,1]$ to other intervals. Remarkably, not only are the induced linear systems sparse, but the operator decouples across the different affine transformations. Hence, the solve reduces to solving $K$ independent sparse linear systems of size $\mathcal{O}(n)\times \mathcal{O}(n)$, with $\mathcal{O}(n)$ nonzero entries, where $K$ is the number of different intervals and $n$ is the highest polynomial degree contained in the sum space. This results in an $\mathcal{O}(n)$ complexity solve. Applications to fractional heat and wave equations are considered.

Abstract:The present paper deals with the numerical solution of space–time-fractional reaction–diffusion problems used to model some complex phenomena that are governed by dynamic of anomalous diffusion. The time- and space-fractional reaction–diffusion equation is modeled by replacing the first-order derivative in time and the second-order derivative in space, respectively, with the Caputo and Riesz operators. We propose an adaptable numerical scheme for the approximation of the derivatives. Accuracy of the method is justified by reporting both the maximum error and relative error in 2D with analytical solutions given. The effectiveness and applicability of the proposed methods are tested on two of practical problems that are of current and recurring interests in one and two dimensions to cover pitfalls that may arise.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop an efficient spectral Galerkin method for the three-dimensional (3D) multi-term time-space fractional diffusion equation. Based on the L 2-1 σ formula for time stepping and the Legendre-Galerkin spectral method for space discretization, a fully discrete numerical scheme is constructed and the stability and convergence analyses are rigorously established. The results show that the fully discrete scheme is unconditionally stable and has second-order accuracy in time and optimal error estimation in space. In addition, we give the detailed implementation and apply the alternating-direction implicit (ADI) method to reduce the computational complexity. Furthermore, numerical experiments are presented to confirm the theoretical claims. As an application of the proposed method, the fractional Bloch-Torrey model is also solved.

Abstract:The nonlocality of the fractional operator causes numerical difficulties for long time computation of the time-fractional evolution equations. This paper develops a high-order fast time-stepping discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the time-fractional diffusion equations, which saves storage and computational time. The optimal error estimate $O(N^{-p-1} + h^{m+1} + \varepsilon N^{r\alpha})$ of the current time-stepping discontinuous Galerkin method is rigorous proved, where $N$ denotes the number of time intervals, $p$ is the degree of polynomial approximation on each time subinterval, $h$ is the maximum space step, $r\ge1$, $m$ is the order of finite element space, and $\varepsilon>0$ can be arbitrarily small. Numerical simulations verify the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a finite difference/collocation method for two-dimensional time fractional diffusion equation with generalized fractional operator. The main purpose of this paper is to design a high order numerical scheme for the new generalized time fractional diffusion equation. First, a finite difference approximation formula is derived for the generalized time fractional derivative, which is verified with order 2 - alpha (0 < alpha < 1). Then, collocation method is introduced for the two-dimensional space approximation. Unconditional stability of the scheme is proved. To make the method more efficient, the alternating direction implicit method is introduced to reduce the computational cost. At last, numerical experiments are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the scheme.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider practical numerical method to solve a space–time fractional advection–dispersion equation with variable coefficients on a finite domain. The equation is obtained from the standard advection–dispersion equation by replacing the first-order time derivative by the Caputo fractional derivative, and the first-order and second-order space derivatives by the Riemann–Liouville fractional derivative, respectively. Here, a new method for solving this equation is proposed in the reproducing kernel space. The representation of solution is given by the form of series and the n-term approximation solution is obtained by truncating the series. The method is easy to implement and the numerical results show the accuracy of the method.

Abstract:In this paper, a new type of the discrete fractional Gr{ö}nwall inequality is developed, which is applied to analyze the stability and convergence of a Galerkin spectral method for a linear time-fractional subdiffusion equation. Based on the temporal-spatial error splitting argument technique, the discrete fractional Gr{ö}nwall inequality is also applied to prove the unconditional convergence of a semi-implicit Galerkin spectral method for a nonlinear time-fractional subdiffusion equation.

Abstract:In this article, a new numerical technique is proposed for solving the two‐dimensional time fractional subdiffusion equation with nonhomogeneous terms. After a transformation of the original problem, standard central difference approximation is used for the spatial discretization. For the time step, a new fractional alternating direction implicit (FADI) scheme based on the L1 approximation is considered. This FADI scheme is constructed by adding a small term, so it is different from standard FADI methods. The solvability, unconditional stability and H1 norm convergence are proved.
