Abstract:Solid-state batteries (SSBs) using a solid electrolyte show potential for providing improved safety as well as higher energy and power density compared with conventional Li-ion batteries. However, two critical bottlenecks remain: the development of solid electrolytes with ionic conductivities comparable to or higher than those of conventional liquid electrolytes and the creation of stable interfaces between SSB components, including the active material, solid electrolyte and conductive additives. Although the first goal has been achieved in several solid ionic conductors, the high impedance at various solid/solid interfaces remains a challenge. Recently, computational models based on ab initio calculations have successfully predicted the stability of solid electrolytes in various systems. In addition, a large amount of experimental data has been accumulated for different interfaces in SSBs. In this Review, we summarize the experimental findings for various classes of solid electrolytes and relate them to computational predictions, with the aim of providing a deeper understanding of the interfacial reactions and insight for the future design and engineering of interfaces in SSBs. We find that, in general, the electrochemical stability and interfacial reaction products can be captured with a small set of chemical and physical principles. The reliable operation of solid-state batteries requires stable or passivating interfaces between solid components. In this Review, we discuss models for interfacial reactions and relate the predictions to experimental findings, aiming to provide a deeper understanding of interface stability.

Abstract:Compared with traditional lithium-ion systems, solid-state batteries could achieve high safety and energy density. Although great improvements have been made, especially in solid-state electrolyte, fundamental challenges still remain in the solid-state systems in terms of chemistry and mechanics. This review summarizes the fundamental issues in solid-state batteries with a focus on three critical phenomena: (i) the principles of developing high ionic conductors, (ii) structural evolution at chemically unstable electrolyte-electrode interfaces, and (iii) the effects of manufacturing solid-state batteries, including electrode, electrolyte design. The future perspectives are also outlined to guide the development of solid-state batteries.

Abstract:Extensive efforts have been made to improve the Li‐ionic conductivity of solid electrolytes (SE) for developing promising all‐solid‐state Li‐based batteries (ASSB). Recent studies suggest that minimizing the existing interface problems is even more important than maximizing the conductivity of SE. Interfaces are essential in ASSB, and their properties significantly influence the battery performance. Interface problems, arising from both physical and (electro)chemical material properties, can significantly inhibit the transport of electrons and Li‐ions in ASSB. Consequently, interface problems may result in interlayer formation, high impedances, immobilization of moveable Li‐ions, loss of active host sites available to accommodate Li‐ions, and Li‐dendrite formation, all causing significant storage capacity losses and ultimately battery failures. The characteristic differences of interfaces between liquid‐ and solid‐type Li‐based batteries are presented here. Interface types, interlayer origin, physical and chemical structures, properties, time evolution, complex interrelations between various factors, and promising interfacial tailoring approaches are reviewed. Furthermore, recent advances in the interface‐sensitive or depth‐resolved analytical tools that can provide mechanistic insights into the interlayer formation and strategies to tailor the interlayer formation, composition, and properties are discussed.

Abstract:Dynamic voltage stability of solid‐state battery interfaces widens the voltage stability window. It includes thermodynamic stability and a large portion of kinetic stability. The constrained ensemble computational approach is applied across most types of solid‐state electrolytes to systematically evaluate and compare their dynamic stability voltage windows in response to the mechanical constriction effect and predict coating materials. Intrinsic or interface thermodynamic voltage windows of solid electrolytes are often narrower than the operational voltage range needed by a full battery, thus various interface decomposition reactions can happen in a practical solid‐state battery. Experimentally, it is found that a proper battery design utilizing the reactions can lead to a dynamic evolution from interface instability to stability, giving the so‐called dynamic voltage stability for advanced battery performance. Here, first the state‐of‐the‐art understanding is articulated about how the dynamic voltage stability should be interpreted in physical picture and treated in computation, emphasizing the potential importance of nonequilibrium reaction pathways. The constrained ensemble computational approach is further applied across most types of solid‐state electrolytes to systematically evaluate and compare their dynamic stability voltage windows in response to the mechanical constriction effect. High‐throughput calculations are used to search for coating materials for different interfaces between sulfide, halide, and oxide electrolytes and typical cathode materials with enhanced dynamic voltage stability. A comparison with experiment is given to highlight the value of these computational predictions.

Abstract:Solid state batteries have gained attention due to the promise of safe operation of battery at high voltage and for longer duration. Solid electrolytes may also help to stabilize conversion electrodes for higher energy density. Arsenic alloys are rarely studied, but several may be interesting as the negative electrode, for example, FeAs, As/C, and InAs.1 The fact that the cost per pound of Arsenic is less than the counterpart negative electrode candidates like Si, Ge, In, Pb, Ti, and V is advantageous.2 In this context, we chose Li3As as a negative electrode material in a solid-state battery configuration. The intrinsic high electronic conductivity of Li3As and conversion reaction mechanism providing a high energy density are the reasons behind selecting Li3As for studying the cycling and interface stability with a Li-P-S based solid electrolyte. The solid-state battery was cycled at different temperatures and the resultant pellet was dissected for analyzing the interface layer formed. The battery that has the iodide doped solid electrolyte performed well in terms of electrochemical cycling properties compared to the undoped electrolyte. An iodide rich layer between the solid electrolyte and Li3As electrode formed within few cycles. This thin iodide rich layer is responsible for the stable performance of the solid-state battery for over 100 cycles. Abstract:Solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLBs) contain various kinds of interfaces, among which the solid electrode|solid electrolyte (ED|SE) interface plays a decisive role in the battery's power density and cycling stability. However, it is still lack of comprehensive knowledge and understanding about various interfacial physical/chemical processes so far. Although tremendous efforts have been dedicated to investigate the origin of large interfacial resistance and sluggish charge (electron/ion) transfer process, many scientific and technological challenges still remain to be clarified. In this review, we detach and discuss the critical individual challenge, including charge transfer process, chemical and electrochemical instability, space charge layers, physical contact and mechanical instability. The fundamental concepts, individual effects on the charge transfer and potential solutions are summarized based on material's thermodynamics, electrode kinetics and mechanical effects. It is anticipated that future research should focus on quantitative analysis, modeling analysis and in-situ microstructure characterizations in order to obtain an efficient manipulation about the complex interfacial behaviors in all solid-state Li batteries.

Abstract:All-solid-state batteries have attracted attention owing to the potential high energy density and safety; however, little success has been made on practical applications of solid-state batteries, which is largely attributed to the solid-solid interface issues. A fundamental elucidation of electrode-electrolyte interface behaviors is of crucial significance but has proven difficult. The interfacial resistance and capacity fading issues in a solid-state battery were probed, revealing a heterogeneous phase transition evolution at solid-solid interfaces. The strain-induced interfacial change and the contact loss, as well as a dense metallic surface phase, deteriorate the electrochemical reaction in solid-state batteries. Furthermore, the in situ growth of electrolytes on secondary particles is proposed to fabricate robust solid-solid interface. Our study enlightens new insights into the mechanism behind solid-solid interfacial reaction for optimizing advanced solid-state batteries.

Abstract:The essence of the scientific problem in all solid-state batteries lies in the properties of the introduced solid electrolyte and the existence of a new solid-solid interface. Starting from the structure-property relationship, the structural evolution of the solid-solid interface and the electrolyte itself, and the matter transport process determine the performance of the all-solid-state battery. With the continuous enrichment of solid electrolyte materials, the current problems in all solid-state batteries are mainly concentrated on the solid-solid interface. The composition and structure at the interface limit the performance of all solid-state batteries. According to the different situations of solid-solid interface contact, this article summarizes and discusses the structure and matter transport at the solid-solid interface in all solid-state batteries according to the three levels of solid-solid interface physical contact, chemical contact and surface modification. Finally, the relationship between local symmetry and material properties under the macroscopic complex system is discussed from the perspective of the functional origin of functional materials.

Abstract:In recent years, due to the increasing demand for portable electronic devices, rechargeable solid-state battery technology has developed rapidly. Lithium-ion batteries are the systems of choice, offering high energy density, flexible and lightweight design, and longer lifespan than comparable battery technologies. Therefore, a better understanding of the relationship between electrochemical mechanism and structural properties from theory and experiment will enable us to accelerate the development of high-performance and security batteries. This review discusses the interplay between theoretical calculation and experiment in the study of lithium ion battery materials. We introduce the application of theoretical calculation method in solid-state batteries through the combination of theory and experiment. We present the concept and assembly technology of solid-state batteries are reviewed. The basic parameters of solid-state electrolytes, especially sulfide-based solid-state electrolytes and their interface mechanisms with high-voltage cathode materials, are analyzed by theoretical methods. We present an overview on the scientific challenges, fundamental mechanisms, and design strategies for solid-state batteries, especially focusing on the issues of stability on solid-state electrolytes and the associated interfaces with both cathode and electrolyte. Owing to the theoretical models, we can not only reveal the unprecedented mechanism from the atomic scale, but also analyze the interface problems in the battery thoroughly, thus effectively designing more promising electrolyte and interface coating materials. It blazed a new trial for engineering an interphase with improved interfacial compatibility for a long-term cyclability.

Abstract:The performance of all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) is significantly impacted by lithium interfacial instability, which originates from the dynamic chemical, morphological, and mechanical changes during deep Li plating and stripping. In this study, we introduce a facile approach to generate a conductive and regenerative solid interface, enhancing both the Li interfacial stability and overall cell performance. The regenerative interface is primarily composed of nanosized lithium iodide (nano-LiI), which originates in situ from the adopted solid-state electrolyte (SSE). During cell operation, the nano-LiI interfacial layer can reversibly diffuse back and forth in synchronization with Li plating and stripping. The interface and dynamic process improve the adhesion and Li+ transport between the Li anode and SSE, facilitating uniform Li plating and stripping. As a result, the metallic Li anode operates stably for over 1000 h at high current densities and even under elevated temperatures. By using metallic Li as the anode directly, we demonstrate stable cycling of all-solid-state Li-sulfur batteries for over 250 cycles at an areal capacity of >2 mA h cm-2 and room temperature. This study offers insights into the design of regenerative and Li+-conductive interfaces to tackle solid interfacial challenges for high-performance ASSLBs.

Abstract:The interface is a critical factor of electrochemical performance for allsolid-state batteries (ASSBs). Comprehending the composition, structure, morphology, and their evolution in the interface during charge/discharge cycling is greatly important for the development and practical application of ASSBs. The characterization techniques are very crucial and powerful for investigating the interface properties of ASSBs. This review briefly describes how the interface is generated in ASSBs, and then emphatically summarizes some important advanced techniques used to characterize the interface in ASSBs. The principle, advantage, and application of the techniques in the interface investigation are systematically discussed. This review provides fundamental insights and perspectives for developing the characterization techniques to deeply understand the interfacial behaviors of ASSBs, which valuable for accelerating the commercialization of ASSBs used in electronic devices, electric vehicles, and large-scale energy storage.

Abstract:All-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) are strongly considered as the next-generation energy storage devices for their high energy density and intrinsic safety. The solid-solid contact between lithium metal and solid electrolyte plays a vital role in the performance of working ASSLBs, which is challenging to investigate quantitatively by experimental approach. This work proposed a quantitative model based on the finite element method for electrochemical impedance spectroscopy simulation of different solid-solid contact states in ASSLBs. With the assistance of an equivalent circuit model and distribution of relaxation times, it is discovered that as the number of voids and the sharpness of cracks increase, the contact resistance Rcgrows and ultimately dominates the battery impedance. Through accurate fitting, inverse proportional relations between contact resistance Rcand (1 - porosity) as well as crack angle was disclosed. Abstract:Li-ion solid electrolytes, which are compatible with metallic lithium anodes, are the key component of all solid-state batteries. Recently, the garnet Li7La3Zr2O12 solid electrolyte has experienced booming development and shown great potential for its excellent overall performance. However, further understanding of its stability with lithium is required for a longer battery lifetime. In this review, latest research work on the interface between garnet-type solid electrolytes and lithium is presented, including both mechanisms governing interface stability and interface engineering methods. The development prospects and potential directions for following research are also discussed in the last section.

Abstract:Remarkable success has been achieved in the discovery of ceramic alkali superionic conductors as electrolytes in solid-state batteries; however, obtaining a stable interface between these electrolytes and electrodes is difficult. Only limited studies on the compatibility between electrodes and solid electrolytes have been reported, partially because of the need for expensive instrumentation and special cell designs. Without simple yet powerful tools, these compatibility issues cannot be systematically investigated, thus hindering the generalization of design rules for the integration of solid-state battery components. Herein, we present a methodology that combines density functional theory calculations and simple experimental techniques such as X-ray diffraction, simultaneous differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravimetric analysis, and electrochemistry to efficiently screen the compatibility of numerous electrode/electrolyte pairs. We systemically distinguish between the electrochemical stability of the solid-state conductor, which is relevant wherever the electrolyte contacts an electron pathway, and the electrochemical stability of the electrode/electrolyte interfaces. For the solid electrolyte, we are able to computationally derive an absolute thermodynamic stability voltage window, which is small for Na3PS4 and Na3PSe4, and a larger voltage window which can be kinetically stabilized. The experimental stability, when measured with reliable techniques, falls between these thermodynamic and kinetic limits. Employing a Na solid-state system as an example, we demonstrate the efficiency of our method by finding the most stable system (NaCrO2 vertical bar Na3PS4 vertical bar Na-Sn) within a selected chemical space (more than 20 different combinations of electrodes and electrolytes). Important selection criteria for the cathode, electrolyte, and anode in solid-state batteries are also derived from this study. The current method not only provides an essential guide for integrating all-solid-state battery components but can also significantly accelerate the expansion of the electrolyte/electrode compatibility data.

Abstract:The fundamental mechanism of enhanced interfacial stability of Li/Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 enabled by the electronic conductor interlayers is revealed. Compared to the inhibition of electron injection by an ionic conductor layer, which is widely accepted as the key role for stabilizing interfaces, this work emphasizes that the electric field homogenization caused by an electronic conductor layer is of equal importance. The (electro)chemical reactions between Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 (LATP) solid‐state electrolyte and lithium metal plague the practical applications of LATP. A commonly used strategy to tackle this issue is to construct an ionic conductor layer to stabilize Li/LATP interface. Herein, it is demonstrated that an electronic conductor interlayer (Al or Ag) can also greatly enhance the interfacial stability of Li/LATP. To unveil the origin of the enhanced interfacial stability, a series of techniques, including in situ electron and optical microscopies, kelvin probe force microscopy, and finite element analysis, is exploited. Control experiments show clearly that Al layer can effectively homogenize the electric field distribution, which enables the uniform growth of interphases and thus prevents stress concentration and crack propagation. Moreover, when coupled with solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) to form Al‐SPE bilayer, it can effectively protect LATP from electron attack and interphase formation. Remarkably, Li symmetrical cells with an Al‐SPE bilayer exhibit superior stability of more than 5000 h at 0.2 mA cm−2, among the best cycling performances to date. This work presents an in‐depth understanding of the mechanism of the enhanced interfacial stability enabled by electronic conductor interlayers, as well as a universal interface architecture to boost the cyclability of solid‐state batteries.

Abstract:The emergence of all-solid-state Li batteries (ASSLBs) represents a promising avenue to address critical concerns like safety and energy density limitations inherent in current Li-ion batteries. Solid electrolytes (SEs) show significant potential in curtailing Li dendrite intrusion, acting as natural barriers against short circuits. However, the substantial challenges at the SEs−electrode interface, particularly concerning the anode, pose significant impediments to the practical implementation of ASSLBs. This review aims to delineate the most viable strategies for overcoming anode interfacial hurdles across four distinct categories of SEs: sulfide SEs, oxide SEs, polymer SEs, and halide SEs. Initially, pivotal issues such as anode interfacial side reactions, inadequate physical contact, and Li dendrite formation are comprehensively outlined. Furthermore, effective methodologies aimed at enhancing anode interfacial stability are expounded, encompassing approaches like solid electrolyte interface (SEI) interlayer insertion, SE optimization, and the adoption of Li alloy in lieu of Li metal, each tailored to specific SE categories. Moreover, this review presents novel insights into fostering interfaces between diverse SE types and Li anodes, while also advocating perspectives and recommendations for the future advancement of ASSLBs.
