Abstract:Abstract Background Parental phubbing has been found to correlate with youth depression and phone addiction. However, the individual characteristics that potentially influence its impacts still need to be uncovered. Method With a survey of a sample of 303 adolescents, aged of 14 to 16 years (M=14.00, SD=0.86), a model linking parental phubbing to life satisfaction was assessed, in which teen’s satisfaction with the parent-adolescent relationship was a mediator, and attachment style was a moderator. Results Parental phubbing predicted lower relationship satisfaction in teens identifying with either preoccupied or fearful attachment, which then predicted lower life satisfaction. However, this indirect effect was not significant in teens identifying with either secure or dismissing attachment. Limitations As this is a correlational research, it is important not to assume directionality; although attachment style is treated as a moderator in this study, it is likely to change over time; we did not differentiate between paternal phubbing and maternal phubbing, neither between paternal attachment and maternal attachment. Conclusions Although parental phubbing has the potential to undermine youth well-being, adolescents cannot be influenced uniformly. Specifically, both the secure and dismissing attachments may be helpful to defend teens against parental phubbing.
