Abstract:The presence of electrolytes will decrease the hydrate formation temperature at a given pressure. The reduction of the formation temperature is closely related to the type and salinity of electrolytes in the solution system. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate the influence of electrolytes on hydrate formation conditions accurately. In this study, a thermodynamic model based on the Chen-Guo model was proposed for the prediction of the phase equilibria of CH4, C2H6, CO2, and H2S hydrates in the presence of NaCl, KCl, CaCl2, MgCl2, and their mixtures. The Patel-Teja equation of state was employed for determining gas fugacity. The Pitzer-Debye-Huckel equation and nonelectrolyte-nonrandom two-liquid-nonrandom factor model, whose binary parameters were directly optimized using hydrate formation data, were used for determining water activity. Two assumptions of characterizing the interactions between the electrolyte and dissolved gas were also discussed. Results show that the prediction accuracy for gas hydrates in a single-electrolyte solution was improved from 5.48% to 3.53% when considering the dissolved gas-electrolyte interaction for hydrate prediction. In addition, the proposed model was validated by the phase equilibria of gas hydrates in the presence of mixed electrolytes. The absolute average deviation in pressure of 107 data points decreased from 8.63% to 4.77%. This study indirectly indicated that considering the gas-electrolyte interaction is beneficial for improving the hydrate prediction in the systems containing electrolytes.
