Abstract:Decoupling local geometric features from the spatial location of a mesh is crucial for feature-preserving mesh denoising. This paper focuses on first order features, i.e., facet normals, and presents a simple yet effective anisotropic mesh denoising framework via normal field denoising. Unlike previous denoising methods based on normal filtering, which process normals defined on the Gauss sphere, our method considers normals as a surface signal defined over the original mesh. This allows the design of a novel bilateral normal filter that depends on both spatial distance and signal distance. Our bilateral filter is a more natural extension of the elegant bilateral filter for image denoising than those used in previous bilateral mesh denoising methods. Besides applying this bilateral normal filter in a local, iterative scheme, as common in most of previous works, we present for the first time a global, noniterative scheme for an isotropic denoising. We show that the former scheme is faster and more effective for denoising extremely noisy meshes while the latter scheme is more robust to irregular surface sampling. We demonstrate that both our feature-preserving schemes generally produce visually and numerically better denoising results than previous methods, especially at challenging regions with sharp features or irregular sampling.

Abstract:A new method for discrete curve smoothing is proposed. Two kinds of mesh denoising algorithms are proposed by Fleishman et al and Jones et al, and these algorithms can preserve features well. But they have disadvantages:the first one makes mesh shrink and the second one makes mesh expand. So, when the two algorithms are applied to curve smoothing. Not only can main features of the original curve be preserved well, but also the smoothed curve no longer suffers from shrinkage. The new algorithm solves two important problems:shrinkage and preserving features.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an effective surface denoising method for noisy surfaces. The two key steps in this method involve feature vertex classification and an iterative, two-step denoising method depending on two feature weighting functions. The classification for feature vertices is based on volume integral invariant. With the super nature of this integral invariant, the features of vertices can be fixed with less influence of noise, and different denoising degrees can be applied to different parts of the pending surface. Compared with other methods, our approach produces better results in feature-preserving.

Abstract:We present a robust mesh sharpening approach to reconstructing sharp features from blended or chamfered features, even with noise and aliasing errors. Feature regions were first recognized via normal variation according to the user's input, and then normal filtering was applied to faces of feature regions. Finally, the vertices of the feature region were gradually updated based on new face normals using a least-squares error criterion. Experimental results demonstrate that the method is effective and robust in sharpening meshes.

Abstract:With the growing availability of various optical and laser scanners, it is easy to capture different kinds of mesh models which are inevitably corrupted with noise. Although many mesh denoising methods proposed in recent years can produce encouraging results, most of them still suffer from their computational efficiencies. In this paper, we propose a highly efficient approach for mesh denoising while preserving geometric features. Specifically, our method consists of three steps: initial vertex filtering, normal estimation, and vertex update. At the initial vertex filtering step, we introduce a fast iterative vertex filter to substantially reduce noise interference. With the initially filtered mesh from the above step, we then estimate face and vertex normals: an unstandardized bilateral filter to efficiently smooth face normals, and an efficient scheme to estimate vertex normals with the filtered face normals. Finally, at the vertex update step, by utilizing both the filtered face normals and estimated vertex normals obtained from the previous step, we propose a novel iterative vertex update algorithm to efficiently update vertex positions. The qualitative and quantitative comparisons show that our method can outperform the selected state of the art methods, in particular, its computational efficiency (up to about 32 times faster).
Feature-Preserving Mesh Denoising Based on Guided Normal Filtering

Abstract:In order to robustly perform tasks based on 3D data model, we propose a feature-preserving mesh denoising algorithm based on the face classification. In the proposed algorithm, the sharp features which play a key role in 3D models are kept unchanged while denoising. The multiscale tensor voting is used to classify the faces into two classes where one is called as feature faces and another as non-feature faces. Feature faces is usually distributed in the neighbourhood of shape edges. Thus these feature faces are key faces in perceptual quality. For processing the faces more efficiently, we propose a search algorithm to find those faces which are close to the feature face and are of similar geometrical properties and then use them to guide the filtering process. The remaining faces are processed by an iteratively joint bilateral filtering. Finally, vertex position is updated according to the filtered face normals. the effectiveness of proposed approach is validated through extensive experiments. Experimental results show the performance is better than the existing methods.

Abstract:Mesh denoising is a critical technology in geometry processing that aims to recover high-fidelity 3D mesh models of objects from their noise-corrupted versions. In this work, we propose a learning-based normal filtering scheme for mesh denoising called NormalNet, which maps the guided normal filtering (GNF) into a deep network. The scheme follows the iterative framework of filtering-based mesh denoising. During each iteration, first, the voxelization strategy is applied on each face in a mesh to transform the irregular local structure into the regular volumetric representation, therefore, both the structure and face normal information are preserved and the convolution operations in CNN(Convolutional Neural Network) can be easily performed. Second, instead of the guidance normal generation and the guided filtering in GNF, a deep CNN is designed, which takes the volumetric representation as input, and outputs the learned filtered normals. At last, the vertex positions are updated according to the filtered normals. Specifically, the iterative training framework is proposed, in which the generation of training data and the network training are alternately performed, whereas the ground truth normals are taken as the guidance normals in GNF to get the target normals. Compared to state-of-the-art works, NormalNet can effectively remove noise while preserving the original features and avoiding pseudo-features.

Abstract:This article presents a deep normal filtering network, called DNF-Net, for mesh denoising. To better capture local geometry, our network processes the mesh in terms of local patches extracted from the mesh. Overall, DNF-Net is an end-to-end network that takes patches of facet normals as inputs and directly outputs the corresponding denoised facet normals of the patches. In this way, we can reconstruct the geometry from the denoised normals with feature preservation. Besides the overall network architecture, our contributions include a novel multi-scale feature embedding unit, a residual learning strategy to remove noise, and a deeply-supervised joint loss function. Compared with the recent data-driven works on mesh denoising, DNF-Net does not require manual input to extract features and better utilizes the training data to enhance its denoising performance. Finally, we present comprehensive experiments to evaluate our method and demonstrate its superiority over the state of the art on both synthetic and real-scanned meshes.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel guided normal filtering followed by vertex updating for mesh denoising. We introduce a two-stage scheme to construct adaptive consistent neighborhoods for guided normal filtering. In the first stage, we newly design a consistency measurement to select a coarse consistent neighborhood for each face in a patch-shift manner. In this step, the selected consistent neighborhoods may still contain some features. Then, a graph-cut based scheme is iteratively performed for constructing different adaptive neighborhoods to match the corresponding local shapes of the mesh. The constructed local neighborhoods in this step, known as the adaptive consistent neighborhoods, can avoid containing any geometric features. By using the constructed adaptive consistent neighborhoods, we compute a more accurate guide normal field to match the underlying surface, which will improve the results of the guide normal filtering. With the help of the adaptive consistent neighborhoods, our guided normal filtering can preserve geometric features well, and is robust against complex shapes of surfaces. Intensive experiments on various meshes show the superiority of our method visually and quantitatively.

Abstract:Three-dimensional mesh data of parts, such as blades and engine bodies, have been widely used in industrial fields. Due to the different kinds of noise during mesh acquisition and the machining deficiency of parts, the mesh quality tends to be insufficient for subsequent operations. Therefore, mesh denoising is a necessary and critical procedure to improve mesh quality. Existing methods commonly apply geometry features smoothing, which may also create unexpected results, such as volume shrinkage and blurring of sharp edges. This paper proposed an adaptive anisotropic bilateral filtering method for mesh data in scale space. Firstly, the mesh is decomposed into a smooth base with low frequency and a height vector field with high frequency based on scale space theory. The denoising of the vertex spatial field is transformed into the denoising of the height vector field, aiming to only consider high-frequency information. Secondly, the bilateral filter scheme with the anisotropic Gaussian kernel is proposed to denoise the height vector field, removing noise mixed with features. The parameters in the bilateral filter scheme are chosen adaptively by maximizing the designed probability density function. The mean square angular error of the proposed method is less than 0.15rad, which is superior to the general-purpose algorithms, for instance, Laplacian filtering, bilateral mesh filtering and bilateral normal filtering algorithm.

Abstract:In recent years researchers have made noticeable progresses in mesh denoising, that is, recovering high-quality 3D models from meshes corrupted with noise (raw or synthetic). Nevertheless, these state of the art approaches still fall short for robustly handling various noisy 3D models. The main technical challenge of robust mesh denoising is to remove noise while maximally preserving geometric features. In particular, this issue becomes more difficult for models with considerable amount of noise. In this paperwe present a novel scheme for robust feature-preserving mesh denoising. Given a noisy mesh input, our method first estimates an initial mesh, then performs feature detection, identification and connection, and finally, iteratively updates vertex positions based on the constructed feature edges. Through many experiments, we show that our approach can robustly and effectively denoise various input mesh models with synthetic noise or raw scanned noise. The qualitative and quantitative comparisons between our method and the selected state of the art methods also show that our approach can noticeably outperform them in terms of both quality and robustness.
Mesh Denoising with Local Guided Normal Filtering and Non-local Similarity

Abstract:Most of existing mesh denoising schemes are inspired by the techniques of conventional 2D image denoising. However, due to the significant difference between 3D mesh and 2D image, the employment of some well-known natural image priors, such as non-local similarity, are not straightforward in mesh denoising. In this paper, we revisit natural priors in the context of mesh denoising, and propose an effective mesh denoising scheme by combining local normal smoothness and non-local self-similarity. Specifically, the normals of neighboring faces and the current face are weighted combined to suppress noise, according to the distances to the current face and their guidance normals. Furthermore, the normals of non-local faces with similar structures are exploited. To find similar structures and calculate the similarity, the concept of k-ring patch is introduced for each face, in which the consistency and average normals of patches are used for finding similar patches. At last, the distance and normal difference between faces are used in calculating similarity between patches and non-local normals will be weighted by similarity. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the state-of-the-art techniques, in terms of both objective and perceptual metrics, especially for the meshes with regular structures.

A Robust High-Resolution Details Preserving Denoising Algorithm for Meshes

Abstract:Finely captured meshes often contain details like sharp edges, corners and shallow features. In order to improve the quality of these meshes, we present a robust and efficient high-resolution details-preserving mesh denoising algorithm. Our method consists of three stages. For each triangular face and its face neighborhood, we improve a robust density-based clustering method and apply it to the face neighborhood to extract a subset of neighbors which belong to the same cluster as the central face. And then, we filter the central face normal iteratively within this subset to remove noise. Because the faces within the extracted subset are not distributed across high-resolution details, our normal filtering can preserve such details as much as possible. Finally, we update the vertex positions to be consistent with the filtered face normals using a least-squares formulation. Experiments on various types of meshes indicate that our method has advantages over previous surface denoising methods.

Abstract:We design a simple yet effective consistency measurement, considering both patch flatness and face-to-patch orientation similarity, to select a candidate patch for each face.We introduce an <math>ℓ0</math> minimization method, incorporating the spectral analysis theory, to refine a shape-aware patch for each face from its corresponding candidate patch.We conduct a variety of experiments to show that our denoising method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on synthetic and raw scanned data.Mesh denoising is a fundamental yet open problem in geometry processing. The main challenge is to remove noise while recovering the shape of the underlying surface as accurately as possible. In this paper, we propose a novel joint bilateral filter on the face normal field. The key is to estimate a reliable guidance normal field by constructing a shape-aware consistent patch for accurately describing the local shape of each face. To this end, we first select a candidate patch for each face by using a newly defined consistent metric considering both patch flatness and face-to-patch orientation similarity. Then, spectral analysis is used in combination with <math>ℓ0</math> minimization to refine the candidate patches in a shape-aware manner. The refined patches do not contain any features, and therefore they can accurately describe the local shape of the underlying surface. After smoothing the face normal field, vertex positions are reconstructed to match the filtered face normals. Our mesh denoising method is theoretically rooted and practical for dealing with the meshes containing corners with low sampling rates, multi-scale features, or narrow structure regions. Abstract:We present a data-driven approach for mesh denoising. Our key idea is to formulate the denoising process with cascaded non-linear regression functions and learn them from a set of noisy meshes and their ground-truth counterparts. Each regression function infers the normal of a denoised output mesh facet from geometry features extracted from its neighborhood facets on the input mesh and sends the result as the input of the next regression function. Specifically, we develop a filtered facet normal descriptor (FND) for modeling the geometry features around each facet on the noisy mesh and model a regression function with neural networks for mapping the FNDs to the facet normals of the denoised mesh. To handle meshes with different geometry features and reduce the training difficulty, we cluster the input mesh facets according to their FNDs and train neural networks for each cluster separately in an offline learning stage. At runtime, our method applies the learned cascaded regression functions to a noisy input mesh and reconstructs the denoised mesh from the output facet normals.Our method learns the non-linear denoising process from the training data and makes no specific assumptions about the noise distribution and geometry features in the input. The runtime denoising process is fully automatic for different input meshes. Our method can be easily adapted to meshes with arbitrary noise patterns by training a dedicated regression scheme with mesh data and the particular noise pattern. We evaluate our method on meshes with both synthetic and real scanned noise, and compare it to other mesh denoising algorithms. Results demonstrate that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art mesh denoising methods and successfully removes different kinds of noise for meshes with various geometry features.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a feature-preserving denoising algorithm. It is built on the premise that the underlying surface of a noisy mesh is piecewise smooth, and a sharp feature lies on the intersection of multiple smooth surface regions. A vertex close to a sharp feature is likely to have a neighborhood that includes distinct smooth segments. By defining the consistent subneighborhood as the segment whose geometry and normal orientation most consistent with those of the vertex, we can completely remove the influence from neighbors lying on other segments during denoising. Our method identifies piecewise smooth subneighborhoods using a robust density-based clustering algorithm based on shared nearest neighbors. In our method, we obtain an initial estimate of vertex normals and curvature tensors by robustly fitting a local quadric model. An anisotropic filter based on optimal estimation theory is further applied to smooth the normal field and the curvature tensor field. This is followed by second-order bilateral filtering, which better preserves curvature details and alleviates volume shrinkage during denoising. The support of these filters is defined by the consistent subneighborhood of a vertex. We have applied this algorithm to both generic and CAD models, and sharp features, such as edges and corners, are very well preserved.
Cascaded Normal Filtering Neural Network for Geometry-Aware Mesh Denoising of Measurement Surfaces

Abstract:Mesh denoising is a fundamental component of many disparate reverse engineering applications of measurement surfaces. This article presents a cascaded normal filtering neural network (termed a CNF-Net) for geometry-aware mesh denoising of measurement surfaces. CNF-Net leverages the geometry domain knowledge (GDK) that, a mesh approximates to its underlying surface compactly if all mesh facets at most lie on the surface intersections while not crossing them. Benefiting from the well-estimated underlying geometry of noisy mesh facets, a multiscale guidedly filtered normal descriptor (M-GFND) is formulated, and multiple height maps are constructed from the M-GFND. The height maps can be effectively fed into CNF-Net for learning the transformation matrices between the M-GFND and the ground-truth facet normal. CNF-Net can automatically handle meshes with multiscale geometric features yet corrupted by the noise of different distributions, while existing learning-based wisdoms commonly pursue an overall normal estimation accuracy yet fail to preserve surface significant features. Both visual and numerical evaluations on synthetic and real noise data sets consistently show the clear improvements of CNF-Net over the state-of-the-arts.

Abstract:Mesh denoising is a fundamental task in geometry processing, and recent studies have demonstrated the remarkable superiority of deep learning-based methods in this field. However, existing works commonly rely on neural networks without explicit designs for noise and geometry which are actually fundamental factors in mesh denoising. In this paper, by jointly considering noise intensity and geometric characteristics, a novel Filtering Coefficient Learner (FCL for short) for mesh denoising is developed, which delicately generates coefficients to filter face normals. Specifically, FCL produces filtering coefficients consisting of a noise-aware component and a geometry-aware component. The first component is inversely proportional to the noise intensity of each face, resulting in smaller coefficients for faces with stronger noise. For the effective assessment of the noise intensity, a noise intensity estimation module is designed, which predicts the angle between paired noisy-clean normals based on a mean filtering angle. The second component is derived based on two types of geometric features, namely the category feature and face-wise features. The category feature provides a global description of the input patch, while the face-wise features complement the perception of local textures. Extensive experiments have validated the superior performance of FCL over SOTA works in both noise removal and feature preservation.
Robust High-Order Bilateral Denoising Filter

Abstract:A robust high-order bilateral denoising algorithm is introduced in the paper. By using techniques from robust statistics, we obtain the approximations of the underlying surfaces. This leads to a conceptually good local patch with precise geometry properties, and as a result, the influence of noises is reduced. In addition, we also present a diffusion method to smooth the geometry properties, including principle curvatures and Frenet frame. The method ensures that the surfaces are smooth in the curvature space, and maintain the details, features and optimize the normals. The results show that, even in a high level noise situation, our algorithm can remove noise effectively, and at the same time keep the details of the model. More importantly, the model may avoid shrinkage that usually comes up in the previous filtering algorithms.
