Abstract:With the prevalence of broadband network and wireless mobile network accesses, distributed interactive applications (DIAs) such as online gaming have attracted a vast number of users over the Internet. The deployment of these systems, however, comes with peculiar hardware/software requirements on the user consoles. Recently, such industrial pioneers as Gaikai, Onlive, and Ciinow have offered a new generation of cloud-based DIAs (CDIAs), which shifts the necessary computing loads to cloud platforms and largely relieves the pressure on individual user's consoles. In this paper, we aim to understand the existing CDIA framework and highlight its design challenges. Our measurement reveals the inside structures as well as the operations of real CDIA systems and identifies the critical role of cloud proxies. While its design makes effective use of cloud resources to mitigate client's workloads, it may also significantly increase the interaction latency among clients if not carefully handled. Besides the extra network latency caused by the cloud proxy involvement, we find that computation-intensive tasks (e.g., game video encoding) and bandwidth-intensive tasks (e.g., streaming the game screens to clients) together create a severe bottleneck in CDIA. Our experiment indicates that when the cloud proxies are virtual machines (VMs) in the cloud, the computation-intensive and bandwidth-intensive tasks may seriously interfere with each other. We accordingly capture this feature in our model and present an interference-aware solution. This solution not only smartly allocates workloads but also dynamically assigns capacities across VMs based on their arrival/departure patterns.

Abstract:Computer Supported Collaboration has not only changed the way people work, but also the way people live, the way people entertain and the way people get education. The development of the Internet provides digital en tertainments and distant-learning with a good network environment and in these applications, 2.5D virtual environ ments are widely used due to their good performances and the sense of realism. But the Internet's inherent problem of latency affects the real-time feature of the virtual envirorunents, in particular multi-server ones. Based on traditional multi-server communication models, a new multi-server one is brought out which extended the region managed by each server. The model was adopted in Zhejiang Tourism Expo'2003, and achieved a great success.

Abstract:With the increasing requirements for distributed virtual environment (DVE): supporting larger number of participants and providing more smooth roaming and interactions, scalability is becoming a key issue. In this paper, we explore the scalability of participants and the scalability of servers, and mainly focus on three aspects: system architecture, communication model and interest mechanism. We present our middleware platform, HIVE, providing a variety of services such as data distribution, communication, event notification, etc. To achieve the reusability and interoperability of DVE applications, the interface specification of high level architecture (HLA) is employed as the reference. HIVE also contains the back-ends, which the middleware services depend upon. On HIVE, users can develop scalable DVE applications easily and quickly, concentrating on not the detail of distribution but the application logic. Finally an experimental demo on HIVE is given.

Abstract:The computer game landscape is changing: people play games on multiple computing devices with heterogeneous form-factors, capability, and connectivity. Providing high playability on such devices concurrently is difficult. To enhance the gaming experience, designers could leverage abundant and elastic cloud resources, but current cloud platforms aren't optimized for highly interactive games. Existing studies focus on streaming-based cloud gaming, which is a special case for the more general cloud game architecture. The authors explain how to integrate techniques from the cloud and game research communities into a complete architecture for enhanced online gaming quality. They examine several open issues that appear only when clouds and games are put together.

Abstract:In view of the insufficiency of current remote simulation resource sharing and visualization technology, based on B/S mode and distributed interaction simulation's characteristics, the new design and method which aim at the remote simulation are provided, making the best of the J2EE architecture. Particularly RMI and the JNDI technology have solved the problems of the remote simulation resources' searching, dispatching and the accessing in the small scope. Using the communication mechanism between Applet and Servlet, the information and data are obtained through the service interface from the distributed environment, thus movements of the simulated entity is controlled. Then Data visualization and a lifelike dynamic demonstration are achieved based on Java3D technology while the user can interact with the virtual environment friendly. The design and method are well illuminated and validated.

Abstract:Cloud gaming is a new way to deliver high-quality gaming experience to gamers anywhere and anytime. In cloud gaming, sophisticated game software runs on powerful servers in data centers, rendered game scenes are streamed to gamers over the Internet in real time, and the gamers use light-weight software executed on heterogeneous devices to interact with the games. Due to the proliferation of high-speed networks and cloud computing, cloud gaming has attracted tremendous attentions in both the academia and industry since late 2000's. In this paper, we survey the latest cloud gaming research from different aspects, spanning over cloud gaming platforms, optimization techniques, and commercial cloud gaming services. The readers will gain the overview of cloud gaming research and get familiar with the recent developments in this area.

Abstract:High-level architecture (HLA) based distributed simulation technology is widely used in education, entertainment, surgery training and many other fields as well. Efficient communication is essential to the modern distributed simulation. This paper explores the factors which affect the communication of HLA-based distributed simulation: network topology, communication model and interest mechanism. Also, it presents a practical approach for efficient communication in HLA-based distributed simulation, called HIVE Communication. HIVE Communication employs a three-level network architecture to achieve efficient transmission in large-scale distributed simulation. This presents a special communication model to get high-efficiency transmission according to the different message types. It exploits three levels of message filtering mechanisms to minimize the update messages. A communication performance test environment is proposed to test HIVE Communication. The results are compared with DMSO RTI 1.3 v5 and DVE_RTI v2.0 in aspects of latency, throughput and loss rate. The performance results are given finally.

Abstract:The cloud-based solutions are becoming inefficient due to considerably large time delays, high power consumption, and security and privacy concerns caused by billions of connected wireless devices and typically zillions of bytes of data they produce at the network edge. A blend of edge computing and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques could optimally shift the resourceful computation servers closer to the network edge, which provides the support for advanced AI applications (e.g., video/audio surveillance and personal recommendation system) by enabling intelligent decision making on computing at the point of data generation as and when it is needed, and distributed Machine Learning (ML) with its potential to avoid the transmission of the large dataset and possible compromise of privacy that may exist in cloud-based centralized learning. Besides, the deployment of AI techniques to redesign end-to-end communication is attracting attention to improve communication performance. Therefore, the interaction of AI and wireless communications generates a new concept, named native AI wireless networks. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive overview of recent advances in distributed intelligence in wireless networks under the umbrella of native AI wireless networks, with a focus on the design of distributed learning architectures for heterogeneous networks, on AI-enabled edge computing, on the communication-efficient technologies to support distributed learning, and on the AI-empowered end-to-end communications. We highlight the advantages of hybrid distributed learning architectures compared to state-of-the-art distributed learning techniques. We summarize the challenges of existing research contributions in distributed intelligence in wireless networks and identify potential future opportunities.

Abstract:HLA-based Distributed Simulation technology is employed widely in Virtual Reality (VR) applications, such as military simulation, internet games, roaming etc. To support larger number of participants, scalability is becoming a key issue of VR applications. In this paper, we explore the characteristics of distributed simulation, and analyze the scalability of servers and participants, and classify our approach to improve scalability of VR applications into three aspects: a three-tier node management mode to accommodate more participants, an efficient management of servers to manage scalable number of clients and software development interface to achieve reusability and interoperability of VR applications. We present our middleware platform, HIVE, providing a scalable HLA-based distributed simulation framework for VR applications, on which users can develop VR applications easily and quickly. Then we give the method and view of application integration with HIVE. Finally an experimental demo is given.

Abstract:Recent advances in cloud technology have turned the idea of cloud gaming into a reality. Cloud gaming, in its simplest form, renders an interactive gaming application remotely in the cloud and streams the scenes as a video sequence back to the player over the Internet. This is an advantage for less powerful computational devices that are otherwise incapable of running high-quality games. Such industrial pioneers as Onlive and Gaikai have seen success in the market with large user bases. In this article, we conduct a systematic analysis of state-of-the-art cloud gaming platforms, and highlight the uniqueness of their framework design. We also measure their real world performance with different types of games, for both interaction latency and streaming quality, revealing critical challenges toward the widespread deployment of cloud gaming.
Cloud Assisted P2P Media Streaming for Bandwidth Constrained Mobile Subscribers

Abstract:Multimedia streaming applications have disruptively occupied bandwidth in wire line Internet, yet today's fledging mobile media streaming still poses many challenges in efficient content distribution due to the form of mobile devices. At the same time, cloud computing is gaining power as a promising technology to transform IT industry and many eminent enterprises are developing their own cloud infrastructures. However, the lack of applications hinders clouds' large-scale implementation. In this paper, we envision a cloud-assisted power-efficient mobile P2P media streaming architecture that addresses the weakness of today's wireless access technologies. Clouds are responsible for storage and computing demanding tasks, and mobile devices colocating with each other share bandwidth and cooperatively stream media content to distribute the load. We first model interactions among mobile devices as a coalition game, and then discuss the optimal chunk retrieval scheduling. Finally, we draw on realistic mobile phone data and utilize an ARIMA model for colocation duration prediction among mobile devices.

Abstract:Distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI) is one of the most promising techniques to provide intelligent services under strict privacy protection regulations for multiple clients. By applying DAI, training on raw data is carried out locally. At the same time, the trained outputs, e.g., model parameters from multiple local clients, are sent back to a central server for aggregation. DAI is recently studied in conjunction with wireless communication networks to achieve better practicality, incorporating various random effects brought by wireless channels. However, because of wireless channels’ complex and case-dependent nature, a generic simulator for applying DAI in wireless communication networks is still lacking. To accelerate the development of DAI in wireless communication networks, we propose a generic system design in this paper and an associated simulator that can be set according to wireless channels and system-level configurations. Details of the system design and analysis of the impacts of wireless environments are provided to facilitate further implementations and updates. We employ a series of experiments to verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed system design and reveal its superior scalability.

Abstract:With the development of 4G/5G technology and smart devices, more and more users begin to play games via their mobile devices. As a promising way to enable users to play any games, cloud gaming is proposed to stream game scene rendered remotely in the cloud with the format of video. However, it faces major challenges in terms of long delay and high network bandwidth. To this end, a novel framework named EdgeGame is proposed to improve the cloud gaming experience by leveraging resources in the edge. Compared to existing cloud gaming systems, EdgeGame offloads the computation-intensive rendering to the network edge instead, which can reduce network delay and bandwidth consumption greatly. Moreover, EdgeGame introduces deep reinforcement learning in the edge to adjust the video bitrates adaptively to accommodate the network dynamics. Finally, we implemented a prototype system and compared it with an existing cloud gaming system. The experiments show that EdgeGame can reduce the average network delay by 50 percent and improve user's QoE by 20 percent.

Abstract:Social applications represent a paradigm shift on how the Internet is to be used, and have already changed the way we work, live, and play. When it comes to deploying social applications, cloud computing platforms are used to meet the Internet-scale, self-propagating, and fast-growing demands from these applications. Yet, to deploy social media applications in the most effective and economic fashion, we need to strategically design and follow a set of theoretical and practical principles. In this paper, we seek to design a set of new principles to guide social application deployment. Learning from large-scale measurement-based observations using a real-world social application, the gist of our principles is to detach the typically integrated "collection → processing → distribution" work ows in social applications into separate local processing and global distribution procedures, which can be effectively deployed using different cloud services. Moreover, based on a predictive model of regional propagation, we formulate the resource allocation problems in the processes of collecting/processing and distributing content as two optimization problems, which can be solved by efficient algorithms. Finally, based on our theoretical design, we have implemented an example social application on Amazon EC2 and Google AppEngine, where IaaS-based computation instances perform content collection and processing, and the PaaS-based platform is employed to distribute the contents that are widely propagating. Our PlanetLab-based trace-driven experiments have further confirmed the superiority of our design.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a real-time interactive method for mobile terminal users to access remote three-dimensional scene based on cloud services. We realize a dynamic and fluent method to access remote three-dimensional scene for mobile terminal. The method achieves a good user experience. We distribute mobile phone user task request and pad user task request from PC terminal user task request by the load balancing server and transfer these tasks to cloud server. So that mobile users transmit the interactive access operation in the scene to cloud server equivalent in the way of instruction set. We complete user command related work and high-quality rendering process by cloud server, which makes mobile terminal user access remote 3D scene immersive interaction. The mobile terminal user only needs to send a command request and receive high-quality pictures. The cloud servers receive instructions from user terminal and complete all related interactive work and transmit results in the form of high-quality pictures to mobile terminal user. This paper solves the technical challenge of mobile device users to access remote real-time interactive 3D scene in a manner of cloud services and continuous interval frame image for the first time.

Abstract:With the continuous development of science and technology, the intelligent development of community system becomes a trend. Meanwhile, smart mobile devices and cloud computing technology are increasingly used in intelligent information systems; however, smart mobile devices such as smartphone and smart pad, also known as thin clients, limited by either their capacities (CPU, memory or battery) or their network resources, do not always meet users' satisfaction in using mobile services. Mobile cloud computing, in which resource-rich virtual machines of smart mobile device are provided to a customer as a service, can be terrific solution for expanding the limitation of real smart mobile device, but the resources utilization rate is low and the information cannot be shared easily. To address the problems above, this paper proposes an information system for intelligent community, which is composed of thin clients, wide band network and cloud computing servers. On one hand, the thin clients with the characteristics of energy efficiency, high robustness and high computing capacity can efficiently avoid the problems encountered in the PC architecture and mobile devices. On the other hand, the cloud computing servers in the proposed information system solve the problems of resource sharing barriers. Finally, the system is built in real environments to evaluate the performance. We deploy the proposed system in a community with more than 2000 residents, and it is demonstrated that the proposed system is robust and efficient.

A Reusable Component for Communication and Data Synchronization in Mobile Distributed Interactive Applications

Abstract:In Distributed Interactive Applications (DIA) such as multiplayer games, where many participants are involved in a same game session and communicate through a network, they may have an inconsistent view of the virtual world because of the communication delays across the network. This issue becomes even more challenging when communicating through a cellular network while executing the DIA client on a mobile terminal. Consistency maintenance algorithms may be used to obtain a uniform view of the virtual world. These algorithms are very complex and hard to program and therefore, the implementation and the future evolution of the application logic code become difficult. To solve this problem, we propose an approach where the consistency concerns are handled separately by a distributed component called a Synchronization Medium, which is responsible for the communication management as well as the consistency maintenance. We present the detailed architecture of the Synchronization Medium and the generic interfaces it offers to DIAs. We evaluate our approach both qualitatively and quantitatively. We first demonstrate that the Synchronization Medium is a reusable component through the development of two game applications, a car racing game and a space war game. A performance evaluation then shows that the overhead introduced by the Synchronization Medium remains acceptable.

Abstract:Mobile gaming presents a number of main issues which remain open. These are concerned mainly with connectivity, computational capacities, memory and battery constraints. In this paper, we discuss the design of a fully distributed approach for the support of mobile Multiplayer Online Games (MOGs). In mobile environments, several features might be exploited to enable resource sharing among multiple devices / game consoles owned by different mobile users. We show the advantages of trading computing / networking facilities among mobile players. This operation mode opens a wide number of interesting sharing scenarios, thus promoting the deployment of novel mobile online games. In particular, once mobile nodes make their resource available for the community, it becomes possible to distribute the software modules that compose the game engine. This allows to distribute the workload for the game advancement management. We claim that resource sharing is in unison with the idea of ludic activity that is behind MOGs. Hence, such schemes can be profitably employed in these contexts.

Abstract:Distributed online optimization and online games have been increasingly researched in the last decade, mostly motivated by their wide applications in sensor networks, robotics (e.g., distributed target tracking and formation control), smart grids, deep learning, and so forth. In these problems, there is a network of agents which interact with each other in a collaborative manner (i.e., distributed online optimization) or noncooperative manner (i.e., online games) through local information exchanges. And the local cost function of each agent is time-varying in dynamic and adversarial environments. At each time, a decision must be made by each agent based on historical information at hand without knowing its future cost functions. For these problems, a comprehensive survey is still lacking. This paper aims to provide a thorough overview of distributed online optimization and online games from the perspective of problem settings, algorithms, communication and computation requirements, and performances. In addition, some potential future directions are also discussed.

Abstract:With the arrival of cloud technology, game accessibility and ubiquity have a bright future; Games can be hosted in a centralize server and accessed through the Internet by a thin client on a wide variety of devices with modest capabilities: cloud gaming. However, current cloud gaming systems have very strong requirements in terms of network resources, thus reducing the accessibility and ubiquity of cloud games, because devices with little bandwidth and people located in area with limited and unstable network connectivity, cannot take advantage of these cloud services. In this paper we present an adaptation technique inspired by the level of detail (LoD) approach in 3D graphics. It delivers multiple platform accessibility and network adaptability, while improving user's quality of experience (QoE) by reducing the impact of poor and unstable network parameters (delay, packet loss, jitter) on game interactivity. We validate our approach using a prototype game in a controlled environment and characterize the user QoE in a pilot experiment. The results show that the proposed framework provides a significant QoE enhancement.
