Abstract:Few-mode optical fibers have played an increasingly important role in breaking through the transmission capacity limitations of single-mode optical fiber and alleviating the bandwidth crisis in optic fiber communication systems in recent years. Nevertheless, traditional solid core few-mode optical fibers usually suffer from optical fiber nonlinearity and mode coupling, leading to mode crosstalk between channels. Hollow core negative curvature fibers (HC-NCF) have attracted widespread attention due to their advantages such as low latency, low nonlinearity, low dispersion, low transmission loss, and large operating bandwidth. In this work, a novel low-loss few-mode HC-NCF with symmetrically double ring nested tube structure is designed, which supports six core modes including LP 01 、LP 11 、LP 21 、LP 02 、LP 31a 、LP 31b . The designed optical fiber is based on silica dioxide substrate and adopts a unique symmetrical double ring nested cladding structure, which can effectively suppress the coupling between the core mode and the cladding mode. The finite element method (FDE) was used to numerically analyze the properties of the proposed few-mode HC-NCF and optimize the structural parameters of the few-mode HC-NCF. Moreover, the confinement loss and bending loss of all core modes were investigated. The simulation results show that the proposed few-mode HC-NCF can support the independent transmission of six weakly coupled core modes (with the effective refractive index difference greater than 1×10 -4 between the adjacent core modes, which greatly avoids the coupling between the adjacent modes in the fiber core). Within the 400 nm bandwidth (1.23-1.63 μm, covering the O, E, S, C, and L bands), all six modes in the fiber core maintain low loss transmission. Moreover, within the range of 1.3-1.63 μm, the CL of LP 01 , LP 11 and LP 21 modes is less than 1×10 -3 dB/m, and the CL of LP 02 and LP 31b modes is less than 3×10 -3 dB/m. The CL of each mode reached the lowest value at 1.4 μm, and the LP 01 mode has the lowest CL of 4.3×10 -7 dB/m. In addition, for a bending radius of 7 cm, each mode maintains the low bending loss characteristic over a certain operating wavelength range. Within the range of 1.23-1.61 μm, the BL of LP 01 is less than 4.5×10 -4 dB/m, and the BL of LP 11 is less than 1.3×10 -3 dB/m. The tolerance analysis shows that even with a structural parameters deviation of ±1%, the few-mode HC-NCF can still maintain the characteristic of low-loss and weak coupling. The designed few-mode HC-NCF has ultra-low CL and bending-insensitive characteristics, while supporting independent transmission of six modes, which will find huge application potential in the future high performance mode division multiplexing systems.

Abstract:Aiming at solving the problems of coupling between modes in a core and mode coupling between cores in few-mode multi-core fiber, a fiber with seven cores each with step index is proposed, and each core can support five modes. Each core has a central low refractive index region and a high refractive index ring to ensure that there is a large refractive index difference between modes in the core, so as to reduce the problem of mode coupling. The bending loss of central core and outer core, the crosstalk characteristics between modes and the influence of core parameters on crosstalk performance are simulated and analyzed by the finite element method. The simulation results show that at a wavelength of 1.55 μm and a bending radius of 50 mm, the bending loss of the proposed multi-core fiber is much lower than its attenuation loss, and the crosstalk between the adjacent cores of the five core modes are less than –20 dB/100 km. Therefore, this multi-core fiber can realize independent transmission of the core modes with long-distance under small bending radius.

Abstract:In this paper, we report an all-fiber 4-mode fiber multiplexer and its measurement, which uses a fused tapering method to fabricate different mode-selective coupler. The insertion loss of a single mode-selective is less than 0.7dB, the insertion loss of LP 01 , LP 11 , LP 21 and LP 02 is less than 3 dB after cascading, while the modal crosstalk is lower than −15dB. This device can be applied in mode-division multiplexing transmission systems.

Abstract:We propose a seven-core five-mode fiber with air hole-assisted and high refractive index ring structure, and it can be fabricated by the stack-and-draw technique. The air hole auxiliary structure can significantly restrain the energy coupling between cores, and the high refractive index ring structure can meet the requirements of low intra-core crosstalk (XT) by improving the effective refractive index difference (Δn eff ) between adjacent modes. Through analyzing the influence of the number and arrangement of air holes on inter-core XT and effective mode field area (A eff ), it can be achieved the results that the inter-core XT is less than −44 dB/100 km and all the A eff values of LP modes are greater than 100 μm 2 in the seven-core five-mode fiber when the wavelength is 1550 nm and the bending radius (R) is 80 mm. At the same time, the Δn eff between LP 21 and LP 02 mode can be controlled to 1.3 × 10 −3 by adjusting the parameters of the high refractive index ring. In addition, the relative core multiplexing factor (RCMF) of the seven-core five-mode fiber is as high as 88.34. The simulation results show that the seven-core five-mode fiber has high spatial density and is suitable for the communication system with multi-channel and long-distance transmission.

Abstract:We report the design, fabrication, and characterization of a few-mode ring-core fiber supporting four mode groups (i.e., seven spatial modes including spatial degeneracies). By carefully designing the ring-core parameters, the fiber can support only single-radial-order modes, which enables weak intermodal coupling between higher order modes and has potential to reduce the complexity of mode-division multiplexed digital signal processing. The low loss (similar to 0.3 dB/km) and long length (25.3 km) RCF is successfully fabricated and they are both records for a ring-core fiber.

Abstract:A novel three-ring-core few-mode fiber with large effective area and low nonlinear coefficient is proposed in this paper. The fiber characteristics based on the full-vector finite element method (FEM) with perfect matched layer boundary conditions show that four supermodes with large effective area, low nonlinear coefficient and low differential mode group delay (DMGD) are achieved. With the increase of input wavelength, the effective areas of three-ring-core few-mode fiber are increased, and the nonlinear coefficients are decreased. The bending losses are increased with the increase of input wavelength, and are decreased with the increase of bending radius. Moreover, the proposed fiber performs a nonlinear coefficient and DMGD flattened profile at a large wavelength range.

Abstract:A novel mode division multiplexer with low loss, low crosstalk is proposed for a type of few mode ring-core fiber (FM-RCF) in our paper. A novel FM-RCF with pure silica ring-core and larger effective refractive index difference (>1x10(-3)) between the modes is proposed as mode transmission channel of our multiplexer. The ring-core channel structure and the larger effective refractive index difference (>1x10(-3)) between the modes are used to effectively reduce the mode crosstalk and improve the mode extinction ratio. Pure silica ring-core is employed to effectively reduce the transmission attenuation and splicing loss. The (de)multiplexing of LP01, LP11a and LP11b modes for FM-RCF is realized. In this paper, the performance of mode division multiplexer is studied by using the beam propagation method and finite element method. The coupling efficiency and extinction ratio of the mode division multiplexer is better than -7.83 dB and 28.13 dB in the range of 1400 nm-1700 nm. The coupling efficiency of the mode division multiplexer is better than -1.39 dB in C band, which is better than -1.69 dB in the previous reference. The extinction ratio of the LP01 mode is more than 48.13 dB in the C band, which is 11.76 dB higher than the average extinction ratio of LP11 mode. The extinction ratios of the three modes are better than 35.42 dB, which is 15.42 dB higher than those of the modes in the previous reference. The intrinsic losses of few mode ring-core transmission channels are all 0.154 dB/km at 1.54 mu m.

Abstract:We propose a solid-core Bragg few-mode fiber with alternating layers of high/low refractive indices. The refractive index of the low-index layer in the cladding is the same as that of the fiber core. The influences of filling ratio, periodic structure width and core size on n(eff), Delta n(eff) and Alpha(eff) are investigated. Bending loss of each guided mode and differential mode delay (DMD) between adjacent spatial modes are also studied at 1550 nm. With appropriate geometrical parameters, the minimum effective refractive index difference (min Delta n(eff)) between adjacent modes is 2x10(-3) at 1550 nm. Wavelength-dependent performance is analyzed subsequently ranging from 1180 nm to 1630 nm. Numerical simulations indicate that such fiber could support 7 linearly polarized (LP) modes and have good bending insensibility performance. These results illustrate that the proposed fiber could be a promising candidate for mode division multiplexing to enhance optical transmission capacity.

Abstract:A 37-core optical fiber with 14 air holes is proposed in this paper. This optical fiber can transmit the fundamental mode and part of the second mode. Effects of structure parameters on effective refractive index, bending loss and effective area of the fundamental mode HE11 and the second-order mode HE21 are investigated systematically. By adjusting the structure parameters, at wavelength of 1550 nm and bending radius of 5 cm, the effective mode field area of the fundamental mode is 1776.289 μm2 , and the bending loss is 4.656×10-5 dB/m. Due to the flexibility of multi-core structure, it is significant for theoretical research and practical manufacturing.

Abstract:Hollow-core fibers are inherently multimode, making it crucial to filter out higher-order modes within the shortest possible fiber length for applications such as high speed coherent communications and fiber optic gyroscopes. However, current HCF designs face the challenges of simultaneously achieving ultralow fundamental mode loss and ultrahigh HOM suppression. In this study, we present a novel four fold truncated double nested anti resonant hollow core fiber structure that addresses this challenge. Our 4T-DNANF enables greater control over phase-matching between core modes and air modes in the cladding, allowing for minimized FM loss and substantially increased HOM loss. Experimentally, we fabricated several HCFs: one with an FM loss of 0.1 dB/km and an HOM loss of 430 dB/km, and another with an FM loss of 0.13 dB/km with a HOM loss of 6500 dB/km, resulting in a higher-order mode extinction ratio of 50,000.

Abstract:A novel optical fiber system composed of single-mode optical fiber and few mode step-index optical fiber is investigated. The relationship between the core radius and index difference for the few mode optical fiber with the same mode field diameter is analyzed using the finite-element method. The low bending loss characteristics of the few mode optical fiber is also demonstrated. The splicing losses of the few-mode optical fiber with the single-mode optical fiber are investigated by the beam propagation method. Numerical results demonstrate the low bending loss transmission and effectively single-mode guiding using the few-mode optical fiber.

Abstract:We propose a few-mode optical fiber for low-bending-loss applications. We demonstrate ultra-lowbending-loss operation in the fiber by tailoring the core radius and index contrast of step-index optical fibers. In addition, we investigate numerically splicing losses in single-mode optical fibers and demonstrate experimentally the ultra-low-bending-loss operation characteristics. The optical fiber elaborated provides a simple technique to realize the low-bending-loss operation.

Abstract:In this invited paper, a novel elliptical-core few-mode fiber (EFMF) with low loss and low Crosstalk is proposed for multiple input multiple output free (MIMO-FREE) applications. The EFMF, which adopts pure silica elliptical core with a step refractive index profile and trench refractive index, can be used in MIMO-FREE operation. The result using a full-vector finite element method shows that the proposed EFMF breaks the mode degeneracy and achieves modes maintaining function. The EFMF performs five non-degenerate modes operations with the modes LP01, LP11a, LP11b, LP21b, and LP21a for the MIMO-FREE applications. The mode crosstalk of the EFMF is effectively reduced using the optimized ellipticity and the large effective refractive index difference between the modes. If the data rate or capacity is conventionally set to a multiple of 2, the transmission system can be upgraded using the EFMF with four modes operations where the effective refractive index difference between any two modes is more than 2 × 10−3. A pure silica core is employed to effectively reduce intrinsic loss. The low bending loss is realized by using the trench refractive index at the cladding. The EFMF can be applied to the good transmission of mode division multiplexing in MIMO-FREE applications while eliminating the difficulty and complexity of the MIMO digital signal processing.

Abstract:The design of a low-bending loss few-mode optical fibre is proposed. Low-bending loss for the fundamental mode is achieved by increasing the index contrast between the core and the cladding, and a microstructured mode filtering region is applied to filter out the higher-order modes in the fibre. Numerical results show that the fundamental mode loss is lower than 0.03 dB/turn and the high-order mode is higher than 4.4 dB/turn at the bending radius of 5 mm and 1300-1600 nm wavelength range.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the coupling characteristics of a few-mode twin-core all-solid photonic bandgap fiber. We show that extrema in the coupling length, reversal of the ordering of supermodes, and complete decoupling can occur in high-order modes. Using significant differences in the coupling characteristics between different modes, we can separate degenerate mode pairs such as LP11a and LP11b, and LP21a and LP21b, as well as modes with the same azimuthal quantum number, e.g., LP01 and LP02. By setting a suitable photonic-crystal period, we can realize an optical fiber coupler with mode separation properties in the C-band. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We studied the characteristics of coupled-core four-core fibers (CC-4CFs) with different core pitches both theoretically and experimentally. The spatial mode dispersions of different fibers were analyzed, and the result agrees well with theoretical ones. In the experiment, we achieved a spatial mode dispersion as low as 3.72 ps/km1/2 for a 4 km-long CC-4CF with core pitch of 19 μm at a bending radius of 8 cm. The impulse response matrices of four core fibers with different core pitches was investigated using swept-wavelength interferometry over 100 nm bandwidth. The impulse responses were Gaussian-shaped and consistent between different inputs and outputs for CC-4CFs. Our results show that the CC-4CFs with core pitches of 17 and 19 μm exhibit narrower pulse broadening. In addition, the mode-dependent losses of different fibers were analyzed. For the fibers with core pitch of 19 μm, the estimated mode-dependent loss was lower than 3 dB for the entire 100 nm bandwidth. Our results are especially helpful for developing coupled-core multicore fibers for long-haul transmission applications.
