Abstract:In this paper a recursive algorithm based on the Bayesian reasoning approach is proposed to update a belief rule based (BRB) expert system for pipeline leak detection and leak size estimation. In addition to using available real time data, expert knowledge on the relationships of the parameters among different rules is incorporated into the updating process so that the performance of the expert system can be improved. Experiments are carried out to compare the newly proposed algorithm with the previously published algorithms, and results show that the proposed algorithm can update the BRB expert system faster and more accurately, which is important for real-time applications. The BRB expert systems can be automatically tuned to represent complex real world systems, and applied widely in engineering.

Abstract:A belief rule base inference methodology using the evidential reasoning approach (RIMER) has been developed recently, where a new belief rule base (BRB) is proposed to extend traditional IF-THEN rules and can capture more complicated causal relationships using different types of information with uncertainties, but these models are trained off-line and it is very expensive to train and re-train them. As such, recursive algorithms have been developed to update the BRB systems online and their calculation speed is very high, which is very important, particularly for the systems that have a high level of real-time requirement. The optimization models and recursive algorithms have been used for pipeline leak detection. However, because the proposed algorithms are both locally optimal and there may exist some noise in the real engineering systems, the trained or updated BRB may violate some certain running patterns that the pipeline leak should follow. These patterns can be determined by human experts according to some basic physical principles and the historical information. Therefore, this paper describes under expert intervention, how the recursive algorithm update the BRB system so that the updated BRB cannot only be used for pipeline leak detection but also satisfy the given patterns. Pipeline operations under different conditions are modeled by a BRB using expert knowledge, which is then updated and fine tuned using the proposed recursive algorithm and pipeline operating data, and validated by testing data. All training and testing data are collected from a real pipeline. The study demonstrates that under expert intervention, the BRB expert system is flexible, can be automatically tuned to represent complicated expert systems, and may be applied widely in engineering. It is also demonstrated that compared with other methods such as fuzzy neural networks (FNNs), the RIMER has a special characteristic of allowing direct intervention of human experts in deciding the internal structure and the parameters of a BRB expert system.

Abstract:A belief rule base inference methodology using the evidential reasoning (RIMER) approach has been developed recently. A belief rule base (BRB), which can be treated as a more generalized expert system, extends traditional IF-THEN rules, but requires the assignment of some system parameters including rule weights, attribute weights, and belief degrees. These parameters need to be determined with care for reliable system simulation and prediction. Some off-line optimization models have been proposed, but it is expensive to train and re-train these models in particular for large-scale systems. Moreover, the recursive algorithms are also proposed to fine tune a BRB online, which require less calculation time and satisfy the real-time requirement. However, the earlier mentioned learning algorithms are all based on a predetermined structure of the BRB. For a complex system, prior knowledge may not be perfect, which leads to the construction of an incomplete or even inappropriate initial BRB structure. Also, too many rules in an initial BRB may lead to over fitting, whilst too few rules may result in under fitting. Consequently, such a BRB system may not be capable of achieving overall optimal performance. In this paper, we consider one realistic and important case where both a preliminary BRB structure and system parameters assigned to given rules can be adjusted online. Based on the definition of a new statistical utility for a belief rule as investigated in this paper, a sequential learning algorithm for online constructing more compact BRB systems is proposed. Compared with the other learning algorithms, a belief rule can be automatically added into the BRB or pruned from the BRB, and our algorithm can also satisfy the real-time requirement. In addition, our algorithm inherits the feature of RIMER, i.e., only partial input and output information is required, which could be either incomplete or vague, either numerical or judgmental, or mixed. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, a practical case study about oil pipeline leak detection is studied and examined to demonstrate how the algorithm can be implemented.

Abstract:Simple genetic algorithm (GA) has the shortcomings of low convergence rate and premature convergence, while BP neural network is prone to the local optimum and its structure is usually difficult to be determined. In this paper, a real-coded self-adaptive GA was introduced to optimize the weight and threshold so that binary-coded self-adaptive GA can find the best topological structure, and then a chaos genetic algorithm was proposed for global optimization of the weight and threshold. A macroscopic state model of pipe network was developed based on improved BP neural network. Case study shows that the new model has higher prediction accuracy.

Abstract:In order to determine the parameters of belief-rule-base (BRB) accurately, several optimization methods have been proposed for training BRB, on the basis of a generic rule-base inference methodology using the evidential reasoning (RIMER) approach. These optimization methods are implemented offline, and such are not suitable for training BRB in a dynamic fashion. In this paper, two recursive algorithms are proposed to update BRB online that can simulate dynamic systems. The main feature of the proposed algorithms is that only partial input and output information is required, which can be incomplete or vague, numerical or judgmental, or mixed. If the internal structure of a BRB is initially decided using expert judgments, domain-specific knowledge and/or commonsense rules, the proposed algorithms can be used to fine-tune the initial BRB online, once input and output datasets become available. Using the proposed algorithms, there is no need to collect a complete set of data before a BRB can be trained, which is necessary if the BRB is used to simulate a dynamic system. A numerical example and a case study are reported to demonstrate the potential of the algorithms for online fault diagnosis.

Abstract:Advancement and application of rule-based expert systems have been a key research area in explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) because the rule-base is one of the most common and natural explainable frameworks for knowledge representation. The present work aims to design a novel rule-based system, called Cumulative Belief Rule-Based System (CBRBS), by establishing efficient rule-base modeling and inference procedures, where the rule-base modeling procedure includes the generation of cumulative belief rules via numeric data transformation and extended belief rule integration, and the rule-base inference procedure includes the inference of cumulative belief rules via consistent rule activation and activated rule integration. All these procedures enable CBRBS to better achieve the balance of explainability, high-efficiency (or computing complexity), and accuracy to fit with different application scenarios, as well as overcome the limitations of classical rule-based systems. Extensive experiments based on the well-known pipeline leak detection problem and open-source classification problems are conducted to illustrate the feature and advantage of the CBRBS over other classical rule-based systems and some commonly used classifiers.

Abstract:In this paper, multi-leak identification based on a transient wave model with physical parameter uncertainties for smart water supply systems is studied. We formulate multi-leak identification under uncertain parameters (such as friction factor, wave speed, and source–end discharge oscillation) as a sparse signal recovery problem with inaccurate parameters in the measurement matrix, by using spatial sampling in leak location space. A stochastic sparse variational Bayesian inference (SSVBI) algorithm to jointly learn the spatial samples, sparse signal, and uncertain parameters is proposed for multi-leak identification. In addition, we establish the convergence of the SSVBI algorithm to an approximate minimum means squared estimate. The proposed approach can be applied to an arbitrary number of leaks, and its computational complexity is insensitive to the number of leaks. This is a significant technical improvement over existing approaches. Finally, simulations show that the SSVBI-based joint learning of uncertain parameters and sparse model can achieve a huge performance gain over existing methods.

Abstract:Hydraulic models have been regarded as an essential tool for controlling and operating water distribution systems (WDSs). With the rapid development of communication networks, real-time control is becoming a hot issue. The nodal water demand as the state variable should be estimated for the control and management of WDS. Due to the lack of sufficient observed data to determine the nodal water demand, the hydraulic model may result in unreasonable model outputs, which are undesirable in actual engineering. We develop a Bayesian inference method to fuse nodal pressure prior information into the state estimation process to address this problem. The developed approach can constrain the nodal water demand estimation process and keep the model outputs (e.g., nodal water pressure) in the feasible domain. This approach is applied to a simple network and a realistic large-scale network. Results show that prior nodal pressure information can significantly increase estimation accuracy and decrease the uncertainty, and the estimated nodal pressure can be confined to a feasible domain.

Abstract:According to the characteristics of complex system,which are complex structure,very difficult to maintain and support,uncertain and incomplete information,multiple faults and coherent faults,fused of Bayesian theory and strategy optimization algorithm,a hybrid rapid fault diagnosis method is put forward.In this method,system fault diagnosis task is divided into several single-fault subtasks;and the fault model is established respectively based on fault tree and Bayesian network;the prior probability is got based on Bayesian-Monte Carlo algorithm in every subtask;so the weak link of the system fault is got by diagnostic analysis.At the same time,the multi-strategy optimization algorithm is used to optimize the fault reason and achieve the purpose of rapid fault diagnosis.Finally,an example is given to prove the correctness and effectiveness of this method.

Abstract:With the development of cities, the water resources loss and environmental pollution caused by pipeline leakage need to be solved urgently. In this paper, a probabilistic method of model-based Bayesian analysis is designed to solve the multi-leakage detection problem of reservoir pipeline valve system. Bayesian inference selects the model best suited to the measured data. This process estimates the number of leaks and then extracts the leak locations from a model that measures data preferences. In this paper, according to the characteristics of water head in pipeline, the Likelihood function of water head for Bayesian evidence calculation is given. It solves the problem that the location ability of recent research methods is limited by leakage location. The number and locations of leakages can be determined simultaneously. Different experimental Settings and scenarios are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. For three leaks that do not contain tight leaks, the RMSE of each leak is 2.3068 m, and in the case of tight leaks, the average RMSE of each leak is 3.5011 m. The results demonstrating that this model-based Bayesian analysis is an accurate tool for leakage enumeration and location estimation.

Abstract:The belief rule-base inference methodology using evidential reasoning (RIMER) approach has been proved to be an effective extension of traditional rule-based expert systems and a powerful tool for representing more complicated causal relationships using different types of information with uncertainties. With a predetermined structure of the initial belief rule-base (BRB), the RIMER approach requires the assignment of some system parameters including rule weights, attribute weights, and belief degrees using experts’ knowledge. Although some updating algorithms were proposed to solve this problem, it is still difficult to find an optimal compact BRB. In this paper, a novel updating algorithm is proposed based on iterative learning strategy for delayed coking unit (DCU), which contains both continuous and discrete characteristics. Daily DCU operations under different conditions are modeled by a BRB, which is then updated using iterative learning methodology, based on a novel statistical utility for every belief rule. Compared with the other learning algorithms, our methodology can lead to a more optimal compact final BRB. With the help of this expert system, a feedforward compensation strategy is introduced to eliminate the disturbance caused by the drum-switching operations. The advantages of this approach are demonstrated on the UniSim™ Operations Suite platform through the developed DCU operation expert system modeled and optimized from a real oil refinery.

Abstract:Failures of the pipelines can not only result in economic losses, but also potentially lead to serious safety accidents. Therefore, it is important to assess the failure risk of pipelines in order to prevent and mitigate pipeline failure accidents. This study proposed a method for failure risk assessment in process systems that combines the dynamic Bayesian network (DBN) with interval type-2 fuzzy sets (IT2FS). In this method, the IT2FS were applied to reduce the subjectivity and uncertainty of expert opinions and the bias between individual opinions. Specifically, an IT2FS-based similarity aggregation method (IT2FS-SAM) was introduced to collect and aggregate the prior probabilities of the parent nodes in the DBN, and an improved weighted sum algorithm (namely leaky-weighted sum algorithm, Leaky-WSA) was developed to obtain the conditional probability tables (CPTs) of the DBN, effectively reducing the number of expert opinions required. Finally, the feasibility of the method was demonstrated through the failure risk assessment of a crude oil gathering pipeline. Using prediction and backward inference with the DBN, the failure probability and main failure causes of the pipeline were determined, allowing pipeline managers to take appropriate preventive and maintenance measures.

Abstract:A hybrid model to predict and judge seepage piping occurring was presented by combining the mechanism model and the neural network model. A set of factors, corresponding with the reliable data which had significant effects on the judgment of seepage piping occurring and were easy to observe and measure, were filtrated based on the mechanism model from a great number of complex and disorderly observed engineering data. This data as the effective parameters were applied into a modified BP neural network scheme to analyze the characteristics of the seepage piping occurring. The modified BP neural network model combined with a database system was designed as an artificial intelligent method to predict and judge the seepage piping occurring in embankments. The developed neural network model was applied to some practical embankments for judging and forecasting of the possibility of seepage piping failure using the collected data from a number of reservoirs and embankments. The results show that the proposed method is effective.

Abstract:<p>Among many rule-based systems employed in classification problems, the belief rule-based (BRB) system has been significant for its ability to deal with both quantitative and qualitative information under uncertainty. However, it may face excessive information and low accuracy in some applications due to the limitations of the conventional BRB generation method. To this end, a greedy-based BRB learning method is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the BRB is generated by selecting a reduced number of belief rules from a set of candidate rules. Then, the BRB learning process is conducted by exploiting a selection and reduction strategy, which searches and selects the optimal rules from candidate rules as well as removes noise and redundant rules. Moreover, the original procedures of the inference process and class estimation are retained from conventional BRB systems. Thirty standard classification benchmarks are tested to validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method, and the classification results are compared with existing rule-based systems, novel belief rule-based systems, and conventional machine learning methods. The comparison results show that the proposed method could achieve relatively satisfactory accuracy while having a significantly smaller BRB. Furthermore, the results derived from benchmarks with two or three classes show the superior performance of the proposed method compared with some state-of-the-art classification methods.</p>

Abstract:Subsea gas pipeline leak may cause the catastrophic consequences, e.g., offshore fire and explosion, and the overturning of floating offshore structures. Efficient risk assessment is critical to prevent the unexpected offshore accident due to subsea gas pipeline leak. The modern technology advancement urges the need for developing new risk assessment approach in the case that a large volume of data becomes available. A new methodology comprising of BRANN implemented with BN is proposed for dynamic risk assessment of process operations, which can capture the nonlinear and the non-sequential features of accident escalation. BN is used to model the accident scenario from causations to consequences considering the conditional dependencies among accident contributory factors. Subsequently, BN model as an informative base is mapped into BRANN model. The data-driven nature makes it better to capture the uncertainty among the cause-consequence relationships. The practicability of the methodology is illustrated by a case study of subsea gas pipeline leak accident. It is observed that BRANN model is superior in the network performance and prediction accuracy. This methodology can help to perform more effectively real-time risk assessment of process operations.

Abstract:In leak detection of oil pipelines,false alarms caused by normal operations at the station may badly reduce the user confidence in leak detection systems.An efficient algorithm is proposed based on statistical modeling and wavelet transform to reduce this kind of false alarm.Based on the great difference in model residual between leak and operation,the algorithm distinguishes operation from leak by using the result of wavelet transform.Offline test results based on a set of data of three months show that,compared with the old leak detection system running at a real pipeline,the new method can reduce the total number of false alarm from 16 to 5.

Abstract:We introduce a novel rule-based approach for handling regression problems. The new methodology carries elements from two frameworks: (i) it provides information about the uncertainty of the parameters of interest using Bayesian inference, and (ii) it allows the incorporation of expert knowledge through rule-based systems. The blending of those two different frameworks can be particularly beneficial for various domains (e.g. engineering), where, even though the significance of uncertainty quantification motivates a Bayesian approach, there is no simple way to incorporate researcher intuition into the model. We validate our models by applying them to synthetic applications: a simple linear regression problem and two more complex structures based on partial differential equations. Finally, we review the advantages of our methodology, which include the simplicity of the implementation, the uncertainty reduction due to the added information and, in some occasions, the derivation of better point predictions, and we address limitations, mainly from the computational complexity perspective, such as the difficulty in choosing an appropriate algorithm and the added computational burden.

Abstract:Since leaks in high-pressure pipelines transporting crude oil can cause severe economic losses, a reliable leak risk assessment can assist in developing an effective pipeline maintenance plan and avoiding unexpected incidents. The fast and accurate leak detection methods are essential for maintaining pipeline safety in pipeline reliability engineering. Current oil pipeline leakage signals are insufficient for feature extraction, while the training time for traditional leakage prediction models is too long. A new leak detection method is proposed based on time-frequency features and the Genetic Algorithm-Levenberg Marquardt (GA-LM) classification model for predicting the leakage status of oil pipelines. The signal that has been processed is transformed to the time and frequency domain, allowing full expression of the original signal. The traditional Back Propagation (BP) neural network is optimized by the Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Levenberg Marquardt (LM) algorithms. The results show that the recognition effect of a combined feature parameter is superior to that of a single feature parameter. The Accuracy , Precision , Recall , and F 1 score of the GA-LM model is 95%, 93.5%, 96.7%, and 95.1%, respectively, which proves that the GA-LM model has a good predictive effect and excellent stability for positive and negative samples. The proposed GA-LM model can obviously reduce training time and improve recognition efficiency. In addition, considering that a large number of samples are required for model training, a wavelet threshold method is proposed to generate sample data with higher reliability. The research results can provide an effective theoretical and technical reference for the leakage risk assessment of the actual oil pipelines.

Abstract:The unintentional release of urban buried gas pipeline may cause crucial consequences to the economy, society and environment. Corrosion and external interference are primary causes of pipeline failure incidents. Due to the complexity and unpredictability of outside influence on the buried gas pipeline, this paper presents an approach to analyze pipeline failure frequency and leakage size caused by corrosion and external interference based on pipeline characteristics. Bayesian network method is used to construct a knowledge model. Pipeline characteristics statistics and failure data are collected to build the relationships among variables in the model and verify the applicability of the model. Results show that the proposed model can estimate buried gas pipeline failure frequency and leakage size caused by corrosion and external interference. It is also capable of highlighting the critical parameters to pipeline failure. Practical application of the model is demonstrated on the underground gas pipeline in the City of H, China.
