Abstract:In this paper, a class of finite difference schemes which achieves low dispersion and controllable dissipation in smooth region and robust shock-capturing capabilities in the vicinity of discontinuities is presented. Firstly, a sufficient condition for semi-discrete finite difference schemes to have independent dispersion and dissipation is derived. This condition enables a novel approach to separately optimize the dissipation and dispersion properties of finite difference schemes and a class of schemes with minimized dispersion and controllable dissipation is thus obtained. Secondly, for the purpose of shock-capturing, one of these schemes is used as the linear part of the WENO scheme with symmetrical stencils to constructed an improved WENO scheme. At last, the improved WENO scheme is blended with its linear counterpart to form a new hybrid scheme for practical applications. The proposed scheme is accurate, flexible and robust. The accuracy and resolution of the proposed scheme are tested by the solutions of several benchmark test cases. The performance of this scheme is further demonstrated by its application in the direct numerical simulation of compressible turbulent channel flow between isothermal walls.

Abstract:For the compressible flows with broadband length scales, good dispersion and dissipation properties are crucial for the numerical schemes to realize high-fidelity simulations. It has been recognized that the minimization of dispersion error is an effective measure to improve the resolution of schemes. However, it is still an open problem for the schemes to control or adjust the dissipation. In this paper, a class of high-order finite difference schemes with minimized dispersion and adaptive dissipation is proposed. As the first step to automatically adjust the dissipation according to the flow structures, we devise a scale sensor to quantify the local length scale of the numerical solution as the effective scaled wavenumber. Then the dispersion-dissipation condition is used to construct the relationship between the dissipation parameter and the effective scaled wavenumber. Thus, we obtain a class of finite difference schemes with adaptive dissipation. To achieve the shock-capturing capability and maintain the superior spectral properties in the smooth regions, we combine the adaptive dissipation scheme with the corresponding weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme to construct a hybrid scheme. At each grid point, either of the sub-schemes is applied dynamically according to a new shock detector. The shock detection accuracy of the new detector has been effectively improved compared with classical ones. The approximate dispersion relation (ADR) shows that the new hybrid scheme is accurate and robust. Several benchmark test problems with broadband length scales as well as discontinuities are presented to verify the high resolution, high efficiency and the good shock-capturing capability of the proposed scheme. The performance of the proposed scheme in turbulence simulation is also demonstrated by the three-dimensional isotropic Taylor-Green vortex problem.

An Optimized Dispersion-Relation-Preserving Combined Compact Difference Scheme to Solve Advection Equations

Abstract:In this study, we first present an improved version of the classical sixth-order combined compact difference (CCD6) scheme to enhance the convective stability of advection equations through an increased dispersion accuracy. This improved fifth-order dispersion–relation-preserving combined compact difference scheme (DRPCCD5) has been rigorously analyzed through the dispersion, phase speed anisotropy and stability analyses. We then couple the DRPCCD5 scheme with the previous fifth-order compact-reconstruction weighted essentially non-oscillatory (CRWENO5) scheme using a hybrid strategy based on the monotonicity–maintenance criteria. To verify the resulting “optimized” hybrid scheme (ODRPCCD5), several benchmark problems with available exact solution are investigated. The comparison to the previous fifth-order WENO (WENO5) scheme shows that the ODRPCCD5 avoids numerical oscillation around discontinuities, handles large gradients well, and is much faster at the same accuracy because a coarser mesh can be used.

Abstract:For the simulation of flow fields with a broad range of length scales, designing numerical schemes with good spectral properties is one of the most important issues. To improve the spectral properties of the semi-discrete finite different schemes, the authors have previously proposed the idea of optimizing the dispersion and dissipation properties separately and a class of finite difference scheme with minimized dispersion and controllable dissipation properties is thus developed (Sun et al. J Comput Phys 230:4616–4635, 2011, 270:238–254, 2014). In the present paper, we further investigated this idea and extend it to the fully discrete scheme. In other words, the dispersion and dissipation errors induced by the temporal discretization are taken into consideration in the present paper. Moreover, a scale sensor is designed in the control of dissipation error to ensure the numerical scheme can automatically adjust its dissipation according to the local characteristic of the flow field. To achieve the shock-capturing capability, this optimized scheme is blended with the WENO-Z scheme to form a hybrid scheme. A number of benchmark test cases including the transportation of a linear wave, the propagation of a sound wave packet, the Shu–Osher problem, the double Mach reflection problem and the Rayleigh–Taylor instability problem are employed to verify the good spectral properties and robust shock-capturing capability of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:The reconstruction with minimized dispersion and controllable dissipation (MDCD) optimizes dispersion and dissipation separately and shows desirable properties of both dispersion and dissipation. A low dispersion finite volume scheme based on MDCD reconstruction is proposed which is capable of handling flow discontinuities and resolving a broad range of length scales. Although the proposed scheme is formally second order accurate, the optimized dispersion and dissipation make it very accurate and robust so that the rich flow features encountered in practical engineering applications can be handled properly. A number of test cases are computed to verify the performances of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:The dispersion and dissipation properties of a scheme are of great importance for the simulation of flow fields which involve a broad range of length scales. In order to improve the spectral properties of the finite difference scheme, the authors have previously proposed the idea of optimizing the dispersion and dissipation properties separately and a fourth order scheme based on the minimized dispersion and controllable dissipation (MDCD) technique is thus constructed [29]. In the present paper, we further investigate this technique and extend it to a sixth order finite difference scheme to solve the Euler and Navier–Stokes equations. The dispersion properties of the scheme is firstly optimized by minimizing an elaborately designed integrated error function. Then the dispersion–dissipation condition which is newly derived by Hu and Adams [30] is introduced to supply sufficient dissipation to damp the unresolved wavenumbers. Furthermore, the optimized scheme is blended with an optimized Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillation (WENO) scheme to make it possible for the discontinuity-capturing. In this process, the approximation–dispersion–relation (ADR) approach is employed to optimize the spectral properties of the nonlinear scheme to yield the true wave propagation behavior of the finite difference scheme. Several benchmark test problems, which include broadband fluctuations and strong shock waves, are solved to validate the high-resolution, the good discontinuity-capturing capability and the high-efficiency of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:Direct numerical simulations of compressible turbulent flow over wavy wall geometries have been carried out by solving N–S equations on general curvilinear coordinates. A 6th order WENO scheme with minimized dispersion and controllable dissipation is employed to compute the inviscid fluxes, a 4th order central difference scheme is applied to compute the viscous fluxes, and a 6th order conservative compact scheme is used for computing the geometrical metrics. An implicit LU-SGS method is used for time integration to improve computational efficiency over the explicit schemes such as the Runge–Kutta approach. The validity and applicability of the present algorithm is confirmed by comparing our results with laboratory experimental measurements and DNS results in the literature.

Abstract:In this paper, a new strategy to establish less time-consuming upwind compact difference method with adjusted dissipation is introduced for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations in the streamfunction-velocity form efficiently. By weighted combination of the numerical solutions calculated using the upwind term and the downwind term of the general third-order upwind compact scheme (UCD3), a new fourth-order compact formulation and a third-order upwind compact formulation with adjusted dissipation nature are proposed for computing the first derivatives. Further, they are used to approximate the biharmonic term and the convective terms in the streamfunction-velocity formulation of the N-S equations, respectively. Meanwhile, the first derivatives of the streamfunction (velocities) in the coefficients in the convective terms are solved by the newly proposed fourth-order compact formulation. Temporal discretization for the streamfunction-velocity formulation is addressed with the help of the second-order Crank-Nicolson scheme. Moreover, the newly proposed scheme for the linear models is proved to be unconditionally stable by virtue of the discrete Fourier analysis. Finally, five numerical problems, viz. the analytic solution, Taylor-Green vortex problem, doubly periodic double shear layer flow problem, lid-driven square cavity flow problem and two-sided square cavity flow problem are solved numerically to verify the efficiency and accuracy of the present method. Results solved by the present method match well with the analytic solutions and the existing results proving the accuracy of it. What is more, it is less time-consuming and has lower dissipation than the existing method [20] .
Low Dispersion and Boundedness Practical Discretization Scheme

Abstract:This paper presents an effective discretization scheme for approximating convective transport. The discretization scheme, the weighted second upwind and central differencing (WSUC) scheme, uses weighted second order upwind and central differencing. The theoretical analysis shows that the WSUC scheme is total variation bounded and unconditionally stable for convective numerical stability. Two numerical tests show that the WSUC scheme is more accurate and has higher resolution than the first order upwind scheme, a second order upwind scheme, the SOUCUP scheme and the MSOUCUP scheme. As an example, the thermal stratification in a thermal storage tank is calculated using the WSUC scheme.
A fourth-order finite difference scheme with accurate dispersion and adaptive dissipation for computational aeroacoustics

Abstract: For computational acoustics, schemes need to have low-dispersion and low-dissipation properties in order to capture the amplitude and phase of the wave correctly. To improve the spectral properties of the scheme, the authors have previously proposed a scale sensor to automatically adjust the numerical dissipation. In consequence, a fourth-order finite difference scheme with minimized dispersion and adaptive dissipation (MDAD) has been proposed [1]. In this study, we further investigate this method for the high-fidelity numerical simulation of the acoustic problems and a new dispersion control method is proposed which is different from the traditional dispersion relation preserving (DRP) approach. Firstly, the scale sensor, which quantifies the local length scale of the solution as the effective scaled wavenumber, is modified for better performance on composite waves. Then the scale sensor is applied to control both the dispersion and dissipation of the scheme. The relationships between the dispersion/dissipation parameter and the effective scaled wavenumber are analytically and artificially constructed respectively. Thus, a fourth-order finite difference scheme with accurate dispersion and adaptive dissipation (ADAD) is constructed. The approximate dispersion relation (ADR) shows that the ADAD scheme achieves accurate dispersion property at k < 2.5. The dissipation is negligible at low wave number and gradually increases after k = 1 to suppress non-physical oscillations. Several benchmark cases of computational acoustics are presented to verify the high resolution of the proposed scheme compared with the conventional spectral optimized schemes.
New Adaptive Low-Dissipation Central-Upwind Schemes

Abstract:We introduce new second-order adaptive low-dissipation central-upwind (LDCU) schemes for the one- and two-dimensional hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. The new adaptive LDCU schemes employ the LDCU numerical fluxes (recently proposed in [{\sc A. Kurganov and R. Xin}, J. Sci. Comput., 96 (2023), Paper No. 56]) computed using the point values reconstructed with the help of adaptively selected nonlinear limiters. To this end, we use a smoothness indicator to detect ``rough'' parts of the computed solution, where the piecewise linear reconstruction is performed using an overcompressive limiter, which leads to extremely sharp resolution of shock and contact waves. In the ``smooth'' areas, we use a more dissipative limiter to prevent the appearance of artificial kinks and staircase-like structures there. In order to avoid oscillations, we perform the reconstruction in the local characteristic variables obtained using the local characteristic decomposition. We test two different smoothness indicators and apply the developed schemes to the one- and two-dimensional Euler equations of gas dynamics. The obtained numerical results clearly demonstrate that the new adaptive LDCU schemes outperform the original ones.

Abstract:In this work, a framework to construct arbitrarily high-order low-dissipation shock-capturing schemes with flexible and controllable nonlinear dissipation for convection-dominated problems is proposed. While a set of candidate stencils of incremental width is constructed, each one is indicated as smooth or nonsmooth by the ENO-like stencil selection procedure proposed in the targeted essentially non-oscillatory (TENO) scheme [Fu et al., Journal of Computational Physics 305 (2016): 333-359]. Rather than being discarded directly as with TENO schemes, the nonsmooth candidates are filtered by an extra nonlinear limiter, such as a monotonicity-preserving (MP) limiter or a total variation diminishing (TVD) limiter. Consequently, high-order reconstruction is achieved by assembling candidate fluxes with optimal linear weights since they are either smooth reconstructions or filtered ones which feature good non-oscillation property. A weight renormalization procedure as with the standard TENO paradigm is not necessary. This new framework concatenates the concepts of TENO, WENO and other nonlinear limiters for shock-capturing, and provides a new insight to designing low-dissipation nonlinear schemes. Through the adaptation of nonlinear limiters, nonlinear dissipation in the newly proposed framework can be controlled separately without affecting the performance in smooth regions. Based on the proposed framework, a family of new six- and eight-point nonlinear schemes with controllable dissipation is proposed. A set of critical benchmark cases involving strong discontinuities and broadband fluctuations is simulated. Numerical results reveal that the proposed new schemes capture discontinuities sharply and resolve the high-wavenumber fluctuations with low dissipation, while maintaining the desired accuracy order in smooth regions.

Bube Mathematics Finite Difference (FD) schemes have been used widely in computing approximations for partial differential equations for wave propagation, as they are simple, flexible and robust. However, even for stable and accurate schemes, waves in the numerical schemes can propagate at different wave speeds than in the true medium. This phenomenon is called numerical dispersion error. Traditionally, FD schemes are designed by forcing accuracy conditions, and in spite of the advantages mentioned above, such schemes suffer from numerical dispersion errors. Traditionally, two ways have been used for the purpose of reducing dispersion error: increasing the sampling rate and using higher order accuracy. More recently, Finkelstein and Kastner (2007, 2008) propose a unified methodology for deriving new schemes that can accommodate arbitrary requirements for reduced phase or group velocity dispersion errors, defined over any region in the frequency domain. Such schemes are based on enforcing exact phase or group velocity at certain preset wavenumbers. This method has been shown to reduce dispersion errors at large wavenumbers. In this dissertation, we study the construction and behaviors of FD schemes designed to have reduced numerical dispersion error. We prove that the system of equations to select the coefficients in a centered FD scheme for second order wave equations with specified order of accuracy and exact phase velocity at preset wavenumbers can always be solved. Furthermore, from the existence of such schemes, we can show that schemes which reduce the dispersion error uniformly in an interval of the frequency domain can be constructed from a Remez algorithm. In these new schemes we propose, we can also specify wavenumbers where the exact phase or group dispersion relation can be satisfied. For an incoming signal consisting of waves of different wavenumbers, our schemes can give more accurate wave propagation speeds. Furthermore, when we apply our schemes in two dimensional media, we can obtain schemes that give small dispersion error at all propagation angles.

Abstract:In the present paper, high order boundary conditions for high order finite difference schemes on curvilinear coordinates are implemented and analyzed. The finite difference scheme employed in the present paper is a conservative scheme on a finite volume type grid arrangement for which the implementation of the boundary conditions is characterized by a proper evaluation of the numerical fluxes at the boundaries. Simple extrapolation procedures dealing with both the inviscid and viscous fluxes at the boundary are proposed. Specifically, for the inviscid fluxes, a characteristic-variable-based extrapolation procedure is adopted, which effectively reduces the numerical reflection at the far-field boundaries. The emphasis of the present paper is to design straightforward and efficient numerical boundary closure procedures which are capable of achieving high order of accuracy near the boundaries. Special attention is paid to the influence of the extrapolation accuracy on the overall accuracy of the scheme. Numerical results show that the finite difference scheme can achieve its nominal order accuracy when the extrapolation accuracy is sufficiently high.
Low-dissipation numerical method with kinetic energy conservation on unstructured meshes

Abstract:Large-eddy simulations on unstructured meshes can be used to analyze complex turbulent flows in complex geometries such as in turbomachinery. The numerical dissipation must be reduced to enhance the simulation accuracy and fidelity. This paper describes a low-dissipation numerical scheme developed based on kinetic energy conservation that greatly enhances the numerical stability. Non-reflective boundary condition was developed as well. Simulations of five fundamental flows using this method show the clear advantages of this method over the upwind method in terms of numerical dissipation and computational efficiency.

Abstract:A high resolution upwind compact streamfunction numerical algorithm for two-dimensional (2D) double-diffusive convection (DDC) is developed. The unsteady Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations in the streamfunction-velocity form and the scalar temperature and concentration equations are used. An optimized third-order upwind compact (UCD3_opt) scheme with a low dispersion error for the first derivatives is utilized to approximate the third derivatives of the streamfunction in the advection terms of the N-S equations and the first derivatives in the advection terms of the scalar temperature and concentration equations. The remaining first derivatives of the streamfunction (velocity), temperature, and concentration variables used in the governing equations are discretized by the fourth-order compact Padé (SCD4) schemes. With the temperature and concentration variables and their approximate values of the first derivatives obtained by the SCD4 schemes, the explicit fourth-order compact schemes are suggested to approximate the second derivatives of temperature and concentration in the diffusion terms of the energy and concentration equations. The discretization of the temporal term is executed with the second-order Crank-Nicolson (C-N) scheme. To assess the spatial behavior capability of the established numerical algorithm and verify the developed computer code, the DDC flow is numerically solved. The obtained results agree well with the benchmark solutions and some accurate results available in the literature, verifying the accuracy, effectiveness, and robustness of the provided algorithm. Finally, a preliminary application of the proposed method to the DDC is carried out.

Abstract:In this paper, an upwind compact difference method with second-order accuracy both in space and time is proposed for the streamfunction–velocity formulation of the unsteady incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. The first derivatives of streamfunction (velocities) are discretized by two type compact schemes, viz. the third-order upwind compact schemes suggested with the characteristic of low dispersion error are used for the advection terms and the fourth-order symmetric compact scheme is employed for the biharmonic term. As a result, a five point constant coefficient second-order compact scheme is established, in which the computational stencils for streamfunction only require grid values at five points at both (n)th and (n+1)th time levels. The new scheme can suppress non-physical oscillations. Moreover, the unconditional stability of the scheme for the linear model is proved by means of the discrete von Neumann analysis. Four numerical experiments involving a test problem with the analytic solution, doubly periodic double shear layer flow problem, lid driven square cavity flow problem and two-sided non-facing lid driven square cavity flow problem are solved numerically to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the newly proposed scheme. The present scheme not only shows the good numerical performance for the problems with sharp gradients, but also proves more effective than the existing second-order compact scheme of the streamfunction–velocity formulation in the aspect of computational cost.

Abstract:This paper presents two uniformly convergent numerical schemes for the two dimensional steady state discrete ordinates transport equation in the diffusive regime, which is valid up to the boundary and interface layers. A five-point node-centered and a four-point cell-centered tailored finite point schemes (TFPS) are introduced. The schemes first approximate the scattering coefficients and sources by piecewise constant functions and then use special solutions to the constant coefficient equation as local basis functions to formulate a discrete linear system. Numerically, both methods can not only capture the diffusion limit, but also exhibit uniform convergence in the diffusive regime, even with boundary layers. Numerical results show that the five-point scheme has first-order accuracy and the four-point scheme has second-order accuracy, uniformly with respect to the mean free path. Therefore a relatively coarse grid can be used to capture the two dimensional boundary and interface layers.

Recently, a family of Targeted Essentially Non-Oscillatory (TENO) schemes is developed to fulfill such requirements. Although TENO has very low dissipation for smooth flow, it introduces a cutoff value <math>CT</math> to maintain the non-oscillatory shock-capturing property. As <math>CT</math> actually controls the dissipation property of TENO, the choice of <math>CT</math> for better shock-capturing capability also means higher dissipation for small structures. To overcome this, in this paper, a new local adaptive method is proposed for the choice of <math>CT</math>. By introducing a novel adaptive function based on the WENO smoothness indicators, <math>CT</math> is dynamically adjusted from <math>1.0×10−10</math> for lower dissipation to <math>1.0×10−4</math> for stable capturing of shock according to the smoothness of the reconstruction stencil. The numerical results of the new method are compared with those of the original TENO method and an adaptive TENO method (Fu et al. AIAA J, 2019). It reveals that the new method is capable of suppressing numerical oscillations near discontinuities while further improving the resolution of TENO at a low extra computational cost.

Abstract:This paper develops the high-order accurate entropy stable finite difference schemes for one- and two-dimensional special relativistic hydrodynamic equations. The schemes are built on the entropy conservative flux and the weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) technique as well as explicit Runge-Kutta time discretization. The key is to technically construct the affordable entropy conservative flux of the semi-discrete second-order accurate entropy conservative schemes satisfying the semi-discrete entropy equality for the found convex entropy pair. As soon as the entropy conservative flux is derived, the dissipation term can be added to give the semi-discrete entropy stable schemes satisfying the semi-discrete entropy inequality with the given convex entropy function. The WENO reconstruction for the scaled entropy variables and the high-order explicit Runge-Kutta time discretization are implemented to obtain the fully-discrete high-order schemes. Several numerical tests are conducted to validate the accuracy and the ability to capture discontinuities of our entropy stable schemes.
