Abstract:In this paper, on the basis of matrix splitting, two preconditioners are proposed and analyzed, for nonsymmetric saddle point problems. The spectral property of the preconditioned matrix is studied in detail. When the iteration parameter becomes small enough, the eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrices will gather into two clusters—one is near (0,0) and the other is near (2,0)—for the PPSS preconditioner no matter whether A is Hermitian or non-Hermitian and for the PHSS preconditioner when A is a Hermitian or real normal matrix. Numerical experiments are given, to illustrate the performances of the two preconditioners.

Abstract:Based on the accelerated Hermitian and skew-Hermitian splitting iteration scheme (Bai and Golub, 2007), we propose a new two-parameter matrix splitting preconditioner in this paper. Spectral properties of the preconditioned matrix are analyzed in detail. Furthermore, based on this preconditioner, an improved version of matrix splitting preconditioner is presented and analyzed. Finally, performance of the preconditioners is compared by using GMRES(m) as an iterative solver on linear systems arising from the discretization of Stokes and Navier–Stokes equations.

Abstract:In this paper, we extend the preconditioners of Sturler and Liesen [SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 26(2005): 1598-1619]. The spectral characteristics of the preconditioners are investigated and the results show that all eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrices are strongly clustered. Finally, numerical experiments are also reported for illustrating the efficiency of the presented preconditioners.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the Hermitian and skew-Hermitian splitting (HSS) preconditioner for generalized saddle point problems with nonzero (2, 2) blocks. The spectral property of the preconditioned matrix is studied in detail. Under certain conditions, all eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrix with the original system being non-Hermitian will form two tight clusters, one is near (0, 0) and the other is near (2, 0) as the iteration parameter approaches to zero from above, so do all eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrix with the original system being Hermitian. Numerical experiments are given to demonstrate the results.

Abstract:In this paper, we derive bounds for the complex eigenvalues of a nonsymmetric saddle point matrix with a symmetric positive semidefinite (2, 2) block, that extend the corresponding previous bounds obtained by Bergamaschi. For the nonsymmetric saddle point problem, we propose a block diagonal preconditioner for the conjugate gradient method in a nonstandard inner product. Abstract:<p>In this paper, a new preconditioned iterative method is presented to solve a class of nonsymmetric nonsingular or singular saddle point problems. The implementation of the proposed preconditioned Krylov subspace method avoids solving inverse of Schur complement and only needs to solve one linear sub-system at each step, which implies that it may save considerable costs. Theoretical convergence analysis, including the bounds of eigenvalues and eigenvectors, the degree of the minimal polynomial of the preconditioned matrix, are discussed in details. Moreover, a novel algebraic estimation technique for finding a practical iteration parameter is presented, which is very effective and practical even for large scale problems. At last, some numerical examples are carried, showing that the theoretical results are valid and convincing.</p>

Abstract:A class of constraint preconditioners for solving two-by-two block linear equations with the (1,2)-block being the transpose of the (2,1)-block and the (2,2)-block being zero was investigated in a recent paper of Cao (Numer Math. 2006; 103:47-61). In this short note, we extend his idea by allowing the (1,2)-block to be not equal to the transpose of the (2,1)-block. Abstract:A shift-splitting preconditioner was recently proposed for saddle point problems, which is based on a generalized shift-splitting of the saddle point matrix. We provide a new analysis to prove that the corresponding shift-splitting iteration method is unconditional convergent. To further show the efficiency of the shift-splitting preconditioner, the eigenvalue distribution of the shift-splitting preconditioned saddle point matrix is investigated. We show that all eigenvalues having nonzero imaginary parts are located in an intersection of two circles and all real eigenvalues are located in a positive interval. Numerical examples are given to confirm our theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the distribution on the eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrices that arise in solving two-by-two block non-Hermitian positive semidefinite linear systems by use of the accelerated Hermitian and skew-Hermitian splitting iteration methods. According to theoretical analysis, we prove that all eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrices are very clustered with any positive iteration parameters alpha and beta; especially, when the iteration parameters alpha and beta approximate to 1, all eigenvalues approach 1. We also prove that the real parts of all eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrices are positive, i.e., the preconditioned matrix is positive stable. Numerical experiments show the correctness and feasibility of the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:We present a valid lower bound for the real eigenvalues of a nonsymmetric saddle point matrix even if its $(2,2)$ block is singular. This bound, together with bounds introduced by Benzi and Simoncini in [Numer. Math., 103 (2006), pp. 173-196], is applied for the analysis of symmetric indefinite preconditioners and primal-based penalty preconditioners. Eigenvalue estimates for the Hermitian and skew-Hermitian splitting preconditioned saddle point matrices are also derived. The model problem of Stokes equations is used to illustrate the presented theoretical results.

Abstract:For large and sparse saddle point linear systems, this paper gives further spectral properties of the primal-based penalty preconditioners introduced in [C.R. Dohrmann, R.B. Lehoucq, A primal-based penalty preconditioner for elliptic saddle point systems, SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 44 (2006) 270–282]. The regions containing the real and non-real eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrix are obtained. The model of the Stokes problem is supplemented to illustrate the theoretical results and to test the quality of the primal-based penalty preconditioner.

Abstract:In this paper, we first present a shift-splitting preconditioner for saddle point problems. The preconditioner is based on a shift-splitting of the saddle point matrix, resulting in an unconditional convergent fixed-point iteration. Based on the idea of the splitting, we further propose a local shift-splitting preconditioner. Some properties of the local shift-splitting preconditioned matrix are studied. These preconditioners extend those studied by Bai, Yin and Su for solving non-Hermitian positive definite linear systems (Bai et al., 2006). Finally, numerical experiments of a model Stokes problem are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed preconditioners.

Abstract:In this paper, based on the idea of symmetric-triangular (ST) decomposition and matrix splitting, a product-type preconditioner and its inexact version are developed for generalized saddle point problems. These preconditioners can be combined appropriately with the efficient preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) method to solve the generalized saddle point problems, although neither these preconditioners nor the generalized saddle point matrices are symmetric and positive definite, which is the advantage of our proposed preconditioners. The proposed PCG method belongs to the group of nonstandard inner product CG methods, so the convergence theorem of the former is given by the use of that of the latter. The difference between the existing nonstandard inner product CG methods and our proposed method is studied. Theoretical analysis shows that the spectrum of the preconditioned matrix corresponding to the proposed inexact preconditioner is contained in a real, positive interval and the quasi-optimal parameter of the preconditioner is effective and easy to apply in practice. Numerical experiments are given to illustrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed inexact preconditioner and show the advantages of the preconditioner over the existing state-of-the-art preconditioners for saddle point problems.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the eigenvalues properties of the general saddle point problem with preconditioners which contain a real parameter alpha. We will give the minimal polynomial of these preconditioned matrix and show that the eigenvalues of preconditioned matrix are real, and the exact Schur complement leads to preconditioned matrix with exactly two or exactly three distinct eigenvalues which are the function of the parameter alpha.

Abstract:In this paper, an alternating positive semidefinite splitting (APSS) preconditioner is proposed for solving double saddle point problems. The corresponding APSS iteration method is proved to be convergent unconditionally. Moreover, to further improve its efficiency, a relaxed variant is established for the APSS preconditioner, which results in better spectral distribution and numerical performance. Numerical experiments with liquid crystal director models demonstrate the effectiveness of the APSS preconditioner and its relaxed variant when compared with other preconditioners. Comparison between the related numerical results shows that the proposed preconditioners are comparable with (though not really better than) the best existing preconditioners.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a modified generalized shift-splitting (denoted by MGSSP) preconditioned method for solving large sparse saddle-point problems. By theoretical analyses, we verify the MGSSP iteration method unconditionally converges to the unique solution of the saddle point problems, estimate the sharp eigenvalue bounds of the related iteration matrix and point out the corresponding preconditioned matrix is positive real. Finally, we perform some numerical computations to show the efficiency and the feasibility of the MGSSP preconditioner.
