Abstract:Scaling factor estimation is one of the most important topics in image forensics. However, when the image is compressed, there will be additional stronger peaks which greatly affect the detection ability. In this paper, a novel method to estimate the scaling factor on JPEG compressed images in the presence of image scaling before the compression is proposed. We find the squared image difference can more effectively obtain the resampling characteristics, and we will mathematically show its periodicity. To further improve the detection ability, we analyze the flat block. It also produces periodic peaks in the spectrum, meanwhile which are enhanced by JPEG compression. To solve this problem, a method based on interpolation on the flat block is developed to remove these influences. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed detection method outperforms some state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:Source camera identification is an important branch of image forensics. This paper describes a novel method for determining image origin based on color filter array (CFA) interpolation coefficient estimation. To reduce the perturbations introduced by a double JPEG compression, a covariance matrix is used to estimate the CFA interpolation coefficients. The classifier incorporates a combination of one-class and multi-class support vector machines to identify camera models as well as outliers that are not in the training set. Classification experiments demonstrate that the method is both accurate and robust for double-compressed JPEG images.

Abstract:Source camera identification forensics aims at determining and authenticating the original sources of digital images to support forensics and get the trace of digital images. This paper introduces a new wavelet features based passive forensic method for the identification of the image source camera. We consider the intrinsic defects and processing of imaging pipeline within digital cameras can be used to formulate the source camera identification problem. Based on this idea, we extract higher-order wavelet features and wavelet coefficient co-occurrence features from taken images, and then apply sequential forward feature selection (SFFS) method to reduce the redundancy and correlation of features and finally use multi-class support vector machine (multi-class SVM) as classifier to identify source cameras. The effectiveness of the proposed approach, also in comparison with other approaches, is experimentally proved on images of six digital cameras.

Abstract:The changes of statistical features can be used to detect the existence of secret messages in images. In this paper, it is indicated that statistical distribution of the whole AC coefficients, such as Generalized Gaussian, Laplacian, Cauchy, etc. can be greatly affected by JPEG quantization process. Furthermore, a constraint condition concerned with quantization step is presented under which the coefficients of individual channel can be fit Laplacian distribution. Based on the constraint condition above, a new steganalytic method, which can achieve a high degree of detection reliability, is also proposed.

Abstract:The authenticity of the image is crucial to many cases. The efficient detection of the JPEG compression history of bitmap image could reveal the possibility of tampering on the image. In this paper, we propose a lightweight but reliable JPEG compression detection method based on image information loss. An efficient feature of the decreasing percentage of zero coefficient is proposed to detect the JPEG compression history of an image, due to the increasing JPEG compression quality factor. In our method, estimated original images are first created. Then the given image and its estimated counterpart are compressed to get the JPEG coefficient. After that, the image information loss will be calculated. Through the analysis, the goal of the compression history detection can be achieved. Extensive experimental results have demonstrated that the proposed method outperforms the existing methods.

Abstract:Double-compression detection is very important in pre-processing of JPEG steganalysis,and high-accurate detection is a key precondition for that steganalysis to have more excellent performance.The authors fully study various effects of double-compression on JPEG features,based on which,a detection algorithm is proposed,which merges histogram features,Benford features,and DFT features.Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is more accurate,which can be used in double-compression of multi-class JPEG blind steganalysis.

Abstract:Since image processing software is widely used to tamper or embed data into JPEG images, the forensics of tampered JPEG images now plays a considerable important role. However, most existing forensics methods that use binary classification can hardly deal with multiclass image forensics problems properly under network environments. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical forensics scheme against multiple heterogeneous JPEG images. We introduce a compression identifier based on Markov model of DCT coefficients as the first hierarchical section and then develop a tampering detection and steganalyzer separately as the second phase. We conduct a series of experiments to testify the validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:Resampling detection is one of the most important topics in image forensics, and the most widely used method in resampling detection is spectral analysis. Since JPEG is the most widely used image format, it is reasonable that the resampling operation is processed on JPEG images. JPEG block artifacts bring severe interference to spectrum-based methods and degrade the detection performance. In addition, the spectral characteristics of the downscaling scenarios are very weak. The detection of downscaling still presents a considerable challenge to forensic applications. In this paper, we propose a method to estimate the downscaling factors of pre-JPEG compressed images in the presence of image downscaling after JPEG compressions. We first analyze the spectrum of scaled images and give an exact formulation of how the scaling factors influence the appearance of periodic artifacts. The expected positions of the characteristic resampling peaks are analytically derived. For the downscaling scenario, the shifted JPEG block artifacts produce periodic peaks, which cause misdetection in the characteristic peak. We find that the interval between the adjacent extrema of difference images obeys the geometric distribution and the distribution has periodic peaks for JPEG images. Hence, we adopt the difference image extremum interval histogram and combine the spectral method to obtain the final estimation. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed detection method outperforms some state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:As one of the most important topics in image forensics, resampling detection has developed rapidly in recent years. However, the robustness to JPEG compression is still challenging for most classical spectrum-based methods, since JPEG compression severely degrades the image contents and introduces block artifacts in the boundary of the compression grid. In this article, we propose a method to estimate the upscaling factors on double JPEG compressed images in the presence of image upscaling between the two compressions. We first analyze the spectrum of scaled images and give an overall formulation of how the scaling factors along with the parameters of JPEG compression and image contents influence the appearance of tampering artifacts. The expected positions of five kinds of characteristic peaks are analytically derived. Then, we analyze the features of double JPEG compressed images in the block discrete cosine transform (BDCT) domain and present an inverse scaling strategy for the upscaling factor estimation with a detailed proof. Finally, a fusion method is proposed that through frequency-domain analysis, a candidate set of upscaling factors is given, and through analysis in the BDCT domain, the optimal estimation from all candidates is determined. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:<p>Image is one of the most widely used information carrier exchanged in the Internet, which raises a problem of privacy leakage. Private images are vulnerable to be intercepted and altered by an attacker, violating the owner's privacy. When an image is tampered maliciously, it is often necessary to perform geometric transformations such as scaling to hide the traces of tampering, introducing resampling traces. In the last two decades, spectral analysis is the most commonly used method for resampling detection. However, since JPEG compression severely interferes the statistical characteristics of resampled images and introduces blocking artifacts, the robustness is really poor for most classical spectrum-based methods in the presence of JPEG compression. In this paper, we propose a method to estimate the upscaling factors of upscaled images in the presence of JPEG compression. A comprehensive analysis in spectrum of scaled images is given. We find that both the location and their difference of spectral peaks in the spectrum of the upscaled pre-JPEG images are related to the upscaling factor. Hence, we adopt the difference histogram of spectral peaks to screen candidate upscaling factors and obtain the final estimation by additional verification step according to the location of the spectral peaks. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.</p>

Abstract:Fourier single-pixel imaging (FSI) has been proven capable of acquiring excellent image quality when is sampled the fully information in Fourier domain. However, when the sampling measurements is limited, image reconstruction by applying inverse Fourier transform algorithm would result in the severe ringing effect and the loss of image details. In this report, we propose a new algorithm for FSI reconstruction based on compressed sensing theory, which utilizes joint discrete gradient and non-local self-similarity priors, thus substantially using the prior knowledge of natural images in reconstruction process. Both the results of computational simulations and experiments demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Resampling detection is one of the most important topics in image forensics. Some methods can even estimate the resampling factors. However, it remains a challenge on the post-compressed images because the JPEG compression destroys the statistical characteristics of the resampled images which greatly affect the detection ability. In this paper, we propose a method to estimate the upscaling factors of double JPEG compressed images in the presence of image upscaling between the two compressions. Both of the pre-compression and the post-compression have a great impact on the estimation. We first analyze the pre-compressed image upscaling and find that the peaks produced by the pre-compression will be suppressed by the post-compression. Therefore, the post-compression has a greater impact than the pre-compression. Through analyzing the influence of post-compression and the causes of the periodic JPEG peaks, we find that the image block estimation can effectively reduce the influence of JPEG block artifacts. To further improve the detection ability, a Gaussian filtering model is developed to deal with JPEG block artifacts and a detector which can more effective extract resampling characteristic is proposed to estimate the upscaling factor. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed detection method outperforms some state-of-the-art methods.
An improved cyclostationary approach based on compressive sensing

Abstract:Cyclostationarity has been a powerful method to analyze the transient and non-stationary signals from rotating machinery, but it needs high sampling frequency and wide time window to obtain the spectral correlation density and enhanced envelop spectrum with high resolution. Therefore huge amounts of data inevitably cause heavy burden for calculation transmission and storage. This paper presents an improved cyclostationary approach based on compressive sensing technique, which can break through the limitation of the Nyquist sampling law by utilizing the sparsity of signals in the transformed domain. Then the target signal can be reconstructed by enforcing sparsity feature under the total variation (TV)-L1 norm optimization. The sparse sampling can be realized efficiently by using a group of binary matrices (like bar code). The number of sampling is much smaller than that of original signal samples used in conventional cyclostationary method. The acoustic signals from a commercial ship propeller is used to validate proposed approach for a successful feature extraction of rotating speed and propeller structure.

Abstract:Over the past years, research on digital image forensics has become a hot topic in multimedia security. Among various forensics technologies, image resampling detection has become a standard detection tool in image forensics. Furthermore, examining parameters of geometric transformations such as scaling factors or rotation angles is very useful for exploring an image's overall processing history. In this paper, we propose a novel image scaling factor estimation method based on normalized energy density and learning to rank, which can not only effectively eliminate the long-known ambiguity between upscaling and downscaling in the analysis of resampling but also accurately estimate the factors of weak scaling, i.e., the scaling factors near 1. Empirical experiments on extensive images with different scaling factors demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Abstract:Image rotation is a common auxiliary method of image tampering, which can make the forged image more realistic from the geometric perspective. Most algorithms of image rotation angle estimation employ the peak value on the Fourier spectrum; however, JPEG post-processing brings additional peak interferences to the spectrum, which has a great impact on algorithm performance. In this paper, angle estimation is carried out for images compressed by JPEG. Firstly, the Fourier cyclic spectrum of image covariance is calculated, followed by semi-soft threshold wavelet transform to eliminate the block artefacts brought by JPEG compression. According to the shortest distance principle in the range of the limited amplitude, the processed cyclic spectral data are sorted to select the peak points. Finally, according to the selected peak point, the corresponding position coordinates of the theoretical peak point are found, and the rotation angle of the image is estimated by the theoretical peak point. Experimental results demonstrate that the average absolute error of the proposed algorithm is significantly lower than that of the state-of-the-art methods investigated, which highlights the promising potential of the proposed method as an image resampling detector in practical forensics applications.

Abstract:Detection of double Joint photographic experts group (JPEG) compression is a major part of image forensics, especially double JPEG compression detection with the same quantization matrix is still a challenging problem. Detection of double JPEG compression for different quantization matrices has achieved good performance so far, and some methods for detecting the same quantization matrix have been proposed. However, most methods designed for grayscale images, where they utilize only truncation and rounding errors, not fully exploiting all the useful information of color JPEG images. In addition, there is no suitable model to analyze the convergence of JPEG images. These results in poor accuracy of the double compression detection for color JPEG images with the same quantization matrix. To solve this problem, we propose an effective method that utilizes third-order polynomial fitting for error convergence curves. Firstly, five successive compressions are used to extract the quantization error, dequantization error, coefficient error, and truncation error in each compression and decompression process. Secondly, based on the convergence characteristics of these four types of error information, a third-order polynomial model and least squares are applied for the fit, and then, the slope of each point of the fitted curve and the difference of the slopes are used as convergence characteristics. Moreover, the fitted curves predict the pre-compression state, which can effectively amplify the gap between single and double compression. Abstract:Over the past years, digital image forensics has become a hot topic in multimedia security field. Among various image forensics technologies, image resampling detection is a standard detection tool. Furthermore, examining parameters of geometric transformations such as scaling factors or rotation angles is very useful for exploring the overall manipulation history of an image. In this paper, we propose a learning-to-rank approach for automatically estimating the scaling factor based on the normalized energy density features and moment features. Specifically, the difference of these features of the ordered image pairs are used for training, then the scaling factor of a new input image can be evaluated from its corresponding rank values. Our proposed method can not only effectively eliminate the long-known ambiguity between upscaling and downscaling in the analysis of resampling but also accurately estimate the factors of downscaling and weak scaling, i.e., the scaling factors near 1. Empirical experiments on extensive images with different scaling factors demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method when compared with the state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:Focusing on JPEG images transferred by social platform and network media from actual forensic cases,quantities of simulation experiments were carried out to evaluate the performance of three typical methods of model-based source camera identification.The methods are based on the feature of interpolation coefficients of color filter array(CFA),local binary pattern(LBP),and image quality measurement(IQM)with high-order wavelet statis-tic features.The experiments demonstrate that the accuracy decreases rapidly with the compression quality of im-ages decreasing.As a result,methods of model-based source camera identification currently used are demanded bet-ter performance in practical scenes.

Abstract:Detection of double Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) compression is an important part of image forensics. Although methods in the past studies have been presented for detecting the double JPEG compression with a different quantization matrix, the detection of double JPEG compression with the same quantization matrix is still a challenging problem. In this paper, an effective method to detect the recompression in the color images by using the conversion error, rounding error, and truncation error on the pixel in the spherical coordinate system is proposed. The randomness of truncation errors, rounding errors, and quantization errors result in random conversion errors. The pixel number of the conversion error is used to extract six-dimensional features. Truncation error and rounding error on the pixel in its three channels are mapped to the spherical coordinate system based on the relation of a color image to the pixel values in the three channels. The former is converted into amplitude and angles to extract 30-dimensional features and 8-dimensional auxiliary features are extracted from the number of special points and special blocks. As a result, a total of 44-dimensional features have been used in the classification by using the support vector machine (SVM) method. Thereafter, the support vector machine recursive feature elimination (SVMRFE) method is used to improve the classification accuracy. The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed method is better than the existing methods.

Abstract:The research on image resampling detection is urgently called for digital image forensics recently. In this paper, the forensics of resampling operation with JPEG compression as post-process is addressed, namely post-JPEG resampling. We first discover the coupling effect between resampling and post-JPEG compression, which is shown as features of frequency mixing in spectrum and named as octant symmetric aliasing peaks(OSAP). The frequency location of OSAP depends on the resampling factor. We verify that the feature of OSAP is prone to be more prominent than resampling when quality factor (QF) of post-JPEG is low enough. By addressing the frequency response of post-JPEG compression, an approximate model of OSAP is derived. The prior knowledge of OSAP can help to enhance the resampling feature, based on which a new method of resampling factor estimation is proposed. In the proposed method, the location of OSAP is estimated from local maximum of spectrum with strong symmetry, and a candidate set of resampling factor is derived from OSAP. The optimal estimation among candidates is chosen in a heuristic way, which weakens the feature of OSAP appropriately.
