Abstract:A novel and efficient quasi-Monte Carlo method for computing the area of a point-sampled surface with associated surface normal for each point is presented. Our method operates directly on the point cloud without any surface reconstruction procedure. Using the Cauchy–Crofton formula, the area of the point-sampled surface is calculated by counting the number of intersection points between the point cloud and a set of uniformly distributed lines generated with low-discrepancy sequences. Based on a clustering technique, we also propose an effective algorithm for computing the intersection points of a line with the point-sampled surface. By testing on a number of point-based models, experiments suggest that our method is more robust and more efficient than those conventional approaches based on surface reconstruction.

Abstract:The surface simplification of point-sampled geometry is one of the key preprocessing techniques for subsequent modeling and visualization algorithms. Based on geometry images, in the paper, we put forward a novel simplification algorithm for point- sampled surfaces. First the point-sampled surfaces are represented as geometry images r(phi,thetas), thetas (r, phi) phi (r, thetas) by projecting their spherical polar coordinates onto a plane. Based on geometry images, the k-nearest neighbors of sample points are then determined significantly fast and their curvatures are estimated. Finally, the point set surfaces are simplified according to the curvature and simplified density. In addition, the quality of the simplified point set surfaces is evaluated using the error measurement method based on the moving least squares surface. This algorithm is very fast, easy to implement and can create high-quality surface approximation with preserving the detail very well and control the simplified density conveniently.

Abstract:A robust denoising algorithm for point-sampled surfaces is proposed based on sampling likelihood.In terms of moving least squares surface,the sampling likelihood for each point on point-sampled surfaces is computed,which measures the probability that a 3D point is located on the sampled surface.Based on the normal tensor voting,the feature intensity of sample point is evaluated.By applying modified bilateral filtering to each normal,and in combination with sampling likelihood and feature intensity,the filtered point-sampled surfaces are obtained.Experimental results demonstrate that the algorithm is robust,and can denoise the noise efficiently while preserving the surface features.

Abstract:Not having to reconstruct any surface, the algorithm first constructs an octree for a point set using a new volume-based refinement method. Then uniformly distributed quasi-random points are generated inside a box enclosing the point set using Niederreiter's low discrepancy sequences. The volume of the point set can be estimated as the ratio of number of random points that are contained within the point set to the total number of random points generated, multiplied by the volume of the box. By testing on a number of point sets, experiments suggest that the new algorithm is simple, efficient and can work well for closed point sets with arbitrary topology. In addition, by combining the algorithm with smoothing operation, a volume-preserving smoothing is obtained.

Abstract:A novel and efficient quasi-Monte Carlo method for estimating the surface area of digitized 3D objects in the volumetric representation is presented. It operates directly on the original digitized objects without any surface reconstruction procedure. Based on the Cauchy-Crofton formula from integral geometry, the method estimates the surface area of a volumetric object by counting the number of intersection points between the object's boundary surface and a set of uniformly distributed lines generated with low-discrepancy sequences. Using a clustering technique, we also propose an effective algorithm for computing the intersection of a line with the boundary surface of volumetric objects. A number of digitized objects are used to evaluate the performance of the new method for surface area measurement.

Abstract:For accurately estimating the normal of a point, the structure of its neighborhood has to be analyzed. All the previous methods use some neighborhood centering at the point, which is prone to be sampled from different surface patches when the point is near sharp features. Then more inaccurate normals or higher computation cost may be unavoidable. To conquer this problem, we present a fast and quality normal estimator based on neighborhood shift. Instead of using the neighborhood centered at the point, we wish to locate a neighborhood containing the point but clear of sharp features, which is usually not centering at the point. Two specific neighborhood shift techniques are designed in view of the complex structure of sharp features and the characteristic of raw point clouds. The experiments show that our method out-performs previous normal estimators in either quality or running time, even in the presence of noise and anisotropic sampling.
Similarity-based simplification of point-sampled surfaces

Abstract:In order to achieve a high-quality simplified model, an adaptive curvature simplification algorithm for point-sampled surfaces was presented based on similarity including strong feature-edge intensity and surface feature anisotropy. Using the normal tensor voting, the feature-edge intensity of sample points was evaluated, by which the point-sampled surfaces were segmented into two parts, one for the strong feature-edge intensity and another for the nonstrong feature-edge intensity. Base on Mean Shift clustering, the second part was clustered into clusters according to the surface-features similarity. The first part and all the clusters were resampled in combination with the surface variation and sampling-density control so as to generate the simplified point set. In addition, the quality of the simplified point set surfaces was evaluated using the error measurement method based on the moving least squares surfaces. Experimental results showed that this algorithm not only can effectively preserve the feature edges and the surface details, but also can achieve the simplified point set generating high-quality surface approximations to the origin point set surfaces.

Abstract:In the ultrasonic profiling measurement of free form surface whose CAD model is unknown, it is necessary to estimate position and normal vector of each sampling point in advance. To solve this problem, a twice-sampling digitizing method was proposed. First, characteristic lines of free form surface were sampled using two curve extrapolation method, and initial surface was reconstructed based on the characteristic lines; then, adaptive sampling path was generated with given precision by recursive dividing initial surface using B-spline knots inserting algorithm. The experimental results show that this method can increase ultrasonic distance measurement efficiency greatly.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new approach to estimate curvature information of point-sampled surfaces. We estimate curvatures in terms of the extremal points of a one-dimensional energy function for discrete surfels (points equipped with normals) and a multi-dimensional energy function for discrete unstructured point clouds. Experimental results indicate that our approaches can estimate curvatures faithfully, and reflect the subtle curvature variations. Some applications for curvature information, such as surface simplification and feature extraction for point-sampled surfaces, are given.

Abstract:Feature sensitive simplification and re-sampling of point set surfaces is an important and challenging issue for many computer graphics and geometric modeling applications.Based on the regular sampling of the Gaussian sphere and the surface normals mapping onto the Gaussian sphere,an adaptive re-sampling framework for point set surfaces is presented in this paper,which includes a naive sampling step by index propagation and a novel cluster optimization step by normalized rectification.Our proposed re-sampling scheme can generate non-uniformly distributed discrete sample points for the underlying point sets in a feature sensitive manner.The intrinsic geometric features of the underlying point set surfaces can be preserved efficiently due to our adaptive re-sampling scheme.A novel splat rendering technique is adopted to illustrate the efficiency of our re-sampling scheme.Moreover,a numerical error statistics and surface reconstruction for simplified models are also given to demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm in term of the simplified quality of the point set surfaces.

Abstract:This paper presents an anisotropic denoising/smoothing algorithm for point-sampled surfaces. Motivated by the impressive results of mean shift filtering on image denoising, we extend the concept to 3D surface smoothing by taking the vertex normal and the curvature as the range component and the vertex position as the spatial component. Then the local mode of each vertex on point-based surfaces is computed by a 3D mean shift procedure dependent on local neighborhoods that are adaptively obtained by a kdtree data structure. Clustering pieces of point-based surfaces of similar local mode provides a meaningful model segmentation. Based on the adaptively clustered neighbors, we finally apply a trilateral point filtering scheme that adjusts the position of sample points along their normal directions to successfully reduce noise from point-sampled surfaces while preserving geometric features.

Abstract:Point sets have become a popular shape representation. In this paper, we present a novel approach to computing variation modes for point set surfaces, and represent the point set surface as a linear combination of the variation modes, called a generative representation for the point set surface. Given a point set, our approach consists of two steps: the first is to produce a set of new samples with increasing smoothness and less detailed features. We use a modified smoothing method based on moving least squares (MLS) surface to produce the samples. The second is to arrange the shape vectors of the new samples together with the original point set into a matrix, and then compute the singular value decomposition of the matrix, producing a set of variation modes (the eigen vectors). Using the variation modes and the generative representation, we can easily synthesize new shapes. Typical applications are low/high/band pass filtering as well as denoising and detail enhancement in multiple scales.

Abstract:Presented two methods to approximate several differential properties, including mean curvature, guass curvature, main curvatures and main directions on point-sampled surfaces. The first method transports voronoi cell and mixed finite-element/finite-volume on triangle mesh to point set. The second one uses moving least square(MLS) projection and fits a series of polynomial patch to the point set surface. Compareing our methods to the analytical results on parametric surfaces. Experiments show that the estimates are satisfying in accuracy.

Abstract:This paper presents a new reverse engineering method for creating 3D mesh models, which approximate an unorganized noisy point set without orientation information. The new method computes sample points by the extended moving least squares method in adaptive octree cell. The octree subdivision is decided by weighted covariance matrix. Then the points are connected by intersections of supported spheres. Further, the triangular meshes are refined to remove non-manifold parts and holes. The new algorithm allows us to construct mesh models from very large point set quickly

Abstract:We develop a method searching for quasi-conformal maps from point-cloud surfaces to Euclidean plane. The maps can be got by directly solving Beltrami equation with proper boundary condition or solving optimization problem of the variational formulation. The point integral methd (PIM) is used for discretization on point clouds. Numerical experiments suggest that the method converges as the density of points increases.

Abstract:A rapid incremental surface approximation algorithm is proposed to establish B-spline surface from the unorganized point cloud. The algorithm is composed of four steps. Firstly, boundary data are obtained in order to set up an initial surface. Secondly, parameterization of raw data is established by projecting. Thirdly, a mask surface is designed to move on the reconstructed surface and its control points are calculated. Finally, the control points of mask surfaces and control points of the whole surface are updated. The reconstructed surface can gradually approximate the target surface by incrementally adding additional sampling points. For a complex surface, can be obtained by computing points' parameter and approximating the target surface twice or more a satisfactory result.
Surface Fitting for Quasi Scattered Data from Coordinate Measuring Systems

Abstract:Non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) surface fitting from data points is wildly used in the fields of computer aided design (CAD), medical imaging, cultural relic representation and object-shape detection. Usually, the measured data acquired from coordinate measuring systems is neither gridded nor completely scattered. The distribution of this kind of data is scattered in physical space, but the data points are stored in a way consistent with the order of measurement, so it is named quasi scattered data in this paper. Therefore they can be organized into rows easily but the number of points in each row is random. In order to overcome the difficulty of surface fitting from this kind of data, a new method based on resampling is proposed. It consists of three major steps: (1) NURBS curve fitting for each row, (2) resampling on the fitted curve and (3) surface fitting from the resampled data. Iterative projection optimization scheme is applied in the first and third step to yield advisable parameterization and reduce the time cost of projection. A resampling approach based on parameters, local peaks and contour curvature is proposed to overcome the problems of nodes redundancy and high time consumption in the fitting of this kind of scattered data. Numerical experiments are conducted with both simulation and practical data, and the results show that the proposed method is fast, effective and robust. What's more, by analyzing the fitting results acquired form data with different degrees of scatterness it can be demonstrated that the error introduced by resampling is negligible and therefore it is feasible.

Abstract:With the emergence of large-scale point-sampled geometry acquired by high-resolution 3D scanning devices, it has become increasingly important to develop efficient algorithms for processing such models which have abundant geometric details and complex topology in general. As a preprocessing step, surface simplification is important and necessary for the subsequent operations and geometric processing. Owing to adaptive mean-shift clustering scheme, a curvature-aware adaptive re-sampling method is proposed for point-sampled geometry simplification. The generated sampling points are non-uniformly distributed and can account for the local geometric feature in a curvature aware manner, i.e. in the simplified model the sampling points are dense in the high curvature regions, and sparse in the low curvature regions. The proposed method has been implemented and demonstrated by several examples.
On the normal vector estimation for point cloud data from smooth surfaces

Abstract:Reliable estimation of the normal vector at a discrete data point in a scanned cloud data set is essential to the correct implementation of modern CAD/CAM technologies when the continuous CAD model representation is not available. A new method based on fitted directional tangent vectors at the data point has been developed to determine its normal vector. A local Voronoi mesh, based on the 3D Voronoi diagram and the proposed mesh growing heuristic rules, is first created to identify the neighboring points that characterize the local geometry. These local Voronoi mesh neighbors are used to fit a group of quadric curves through which the directional tangent vectors are obtained. The normal vector is then determined by minimizing the variance of the dot products between a normal vector candidate and the associated directional tangent vectors. Implementation results from extensive simulated and practical point cloud data sets have demonstrated that the present method is robust and estimates normal vectors with reliable consistency in comparison with the existing plane fitting, quadric surface fitting, triangle-based area weighted average, and triangle-based angle weighted average methods.
