Abstract:Graph Pattern Matching (GPM) plays a significant role in many real applications, where many applications often need to find Top-K matches of a specific node, (named as the designated node v d ) based on a pattern graph, rather than the entire set of matching. However, the existing GPM methods for matching the designated node v d in social graphs do not consider the social contexts like the social relationships, the social trust and the social positions which commonly exist in real applications, like the experts recommendation in social graphs, leading to deliver low quality designated nodes. In this paper, we first propose the conText-Aware Graph pattern based Top-K designed nodes finding problem (TAG-K), which involves the NP-Complete Multiple Constrained GPM problem, and thus it is NP-Complete. To address the efficiency and effectiveness issues of TAG-K in large-scale social graphs, we propose two indices, MA-Tree and SSC-Index, which can help efficiently find the Top-K matching. Furthermore, we propose an approximation algorithm, A-TAG-K. Using real social network datasets, we experimentally verify that A-TAG-K outperforms the existing methods in both efficiency and effectiveness for solving the TAG-K problem.

This is called Graph Pattern based Node Matching (GPNM) problem. However, the existing GPM methods for matching the designated node vd in social graphs do not consider the social contexts like the social relationships, the social trust and the social positions which commonly exist in real applications, like the experts recommendation in social graphs, leading to deliver low quality designated nodes. In this paper, we first propose the conText-Aware Graph pattern based Top-K designed nodes finding problem (TAG-K), which involves the NP-Complete Multiple Constrained GPM problem, and thus it is NP-Complete. Based on the experimental results on five real social graphs, we have demonstrated that MC-TAG-K outperforms the existing methods in both efficiency and effectiveness.

Abstract:Graph Pattern Matching (GPM) plays a significant role in many real applications, where given a graph pattern Q and a data graph G, computing the set M(Q, G) of matching subgraphs of Q in G. However, many applications like the experts recommendation in social networks, often need to find Top-K matches of a designated node v 0 , rather than the entire set M(Q, G). Moreover, the existing GPM method for matching the designated node v 0 does not consider the multiple constraints of the attributes associated with each vertex and each edge which commonly exist in real applications, like the constraints of social contexts for the experts recommendation in contextual social. In this paper, we first propose the Multi-Constrained Top-K Graph Pattern Matching problem (MC-Top-K-GPM), which involves the NP-Complete Multiple Constrained GPM problem. To address the efficiency and effectiveness issues of MC-Top-K-GPM in large-scale social graphs, we propose a novel index, called HB-Tree, which indexes the label and degree of nodes in G and can get candidates of v 0 efficiently. Furthermore, we develop a Multi-Constrained Top-K GPM method, called MTK, which can identify Top-K matches of v 0 effectively and efficiently. Using real-life data, we experimentally verify that MTK outperforms the existing GPM algorithms in both efficiency and effectiveness in solving the MC-TOP-K GPM problem.

Abstract:Online social network is popular and graph pattern matching (GPM) has been significant in many social network based applications, such as experts finding and social position detection. However, the existing GPM methods do not consider the multiple constraints of the social contexts in GPM, which are commonly found in various applications, or they do not consider the changes of graph structure in the index maintenance of GPM, leading to low efficiency. In this paper, we first propose a multi-constrained simulation based on the bounded graph simulation, and propose a multi-constrained graph pattern matching (MC-GPM) problem. To improve the efficiency of MC-GPM in large social graphs, we propose a new concept, strong social graph (SSG), that contains the users who have strong social connections. Then, we propose an SSG-index method to index the reachability, the graph patterns, and the social contexts of social graphs. Finally, we propose an incremental algorithm to maintain the SSG-index, which can greatly save the execution time when faced with the change of the structures of SSGs. Moreover, by combining SSG-index, we develop a heuristic algorithm, called SSG-MGPM, to identify MC-GPM results effectively and efficiently. An empirical study over five real-world social graphs has demonstrated the superiority of our approach in terms of efficiency and effectiveness.

Abstract:Revealing corresponding identities of a dedicated individual in several different complex systems is a common task in many areas, and this task is transferred to a node matching problem among complex networks in this paper. A feasible node matching algorithm based on network structure is proposed. Through solving node matching problems on different types of networks by our algorithm, it is revealed that the structure of the networks under study may significantly influence the final matching results. For example, it is found that higher matching precision can be obtained on random networks with moderate density of links, and the results on small-world networks are always better than those on random or regular networks. Moreover, in scale-free networks, it seems that hub nodes play dominant roles, i.e., better matching results can be expected by selecting nodes with larger degrees as the revealed matched nodes. These findings will help us design more efficient node matching algorithm in the future.

Abstract:Cyberspace hosts abundant interactions between users and different kinds of objects, and their relations are often encapsulated as bipartite graphs. Detecting user community in such heterogeneous graphs is an essential task to uncover user information needs and to further enhance recommendation performance. While several main cyber domains carrying high-quality graphs, unfortunately, most others can be quite sparse. However, as users may appear in multiple domains (graphs), their high-quality activities in the main domains can supply community detection in the sparse ones, e.g., user behaviors on Google can help thousands of applications to locate his/her local community when s/he uses Google ID to login those applications. In this paper, our model, Pairwise Cross-graph Community Detection (PCCD), is proposed to cope with the sparse graph problem by involving external graph knowledge to learn user pairwise community closeness instead of detecting direct communities. Particularly in our model, to avoid taking excessive propagated information, a two-level filtering module is utilized to select the most informative connections through both community and node level filters. Subsequently, a Community Recurrent Unit (CRU) is designed to estimate pairwise user community closeness. Extensive experiments on two real-world graph datasets validate our model against several strong alternatives. Supplementary experiments also validate its robustness on graphs with varied sparsity scales.

Abstract:Graph matching is important for a wide variety of applications in different domains such as social network analysis and knowledge discovery. Despite extensive research over the last few decades, graph matching is still challenging particularly when it comes with new conditions and constraints. In this paper, we focus on a new class of graph matching, in which each node can accept multiple labels instead of one. In particular, we address the problem of finding the top-k nodes of a data graph which best match a labeled query node from a given pattern graph. We firstly prove this to be an NP-Complete problem. Then, to address this issue and improve the scalability of our approach, we introduce a more flexible graph simulation, namely surjective simulation. This new graph simulation reduces the unnecessary complexity that is due to the unnecessary constraints imposed by the existing definitions while achieving high-quality matching results. In addition, our approach is associated with an early stop strategy to further boost the performance. To approximate the maximum size of a simulation, our approach utilizes Metropolis Hastings algorithm and ranks the top-k matches after computing the set of surjective simulations. The experimental results over social network graphs demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach and superiority over existing approaches.

Abstract:Graph Pattern Matching (GPM) has been used in lots of areas, like biology, medical science, and physics. With the advent of Online Social Networks (OSNs), recently, GPM has been playing a significant role in social network analysis, which has been widely used in, for example, finding experts, social community mining, and social position detection. Given a query which contains a pattern graph $G_Q$ and a data graph $G_D$ , a GPM algorithm finds those subgraphs, $G_M$, that match $G_Q$ in $G_D$ . However, the existing GPM methods do not consider the multiple end-to-end constraints of the social contexts, like social relationships, social trust, and social positions on edges in $G_Q$ , which are commonly found in various applications, such as crowdsourcing travel, social network based e-commerce, and study group selection, etc. In this paper, we first conceptually extend Bounded Simulation to Multi-Constrained Simulation (MCS), and propose a novel NP-Complete Multi-Constrained Graph Pattern Matching (MC-GPM) problem. Then, to address the efficiency issue in large-scale MC-GPM, we propose a new concept called Strong Social Component (SSC), consisting of participants with strong social connections. We also propose an approach to identifying SSCs, and propose a novel index method and a graph compression method for SSC. Moreover, we devise a multithreading heuristic algorithm, called M-HAMC, to bidirectionally search the MC-GPM results in parallel without decompressing graphs. An extensive empirical study over five real-world large-scale social graphs has demonstrated the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach.

Abstract:A knowledge graph contains many real-world facts that can be used to support various analytical tasks, e.g., exceptional fact discovery and the check of claims. In this work, we attempt to extract top-$k$ frequent and diversified patterns from knowledge graph by well capturing user interest. Specifically, we first formalize the core-based top-$k$ frequent pattern discovery problem, which finds the top-$k$ frequent patterns that are extended from a core pattern specified by user query and have the highest frequency. In addition, to diversify the top-$k$ frequent patterns, we define a distance function to measure the dissimilarity between two patterns, and return top-$k$ patterns in which the pairwise diversity of any two resultant patterns exceeds a given threshold. As the search space of candidate patterns is exponential w.r.t. the number of nodes and edges in the knowledge graph, discovering frequent and diversified patterns is computationally challenging. To achieve high efficiency, we propose a suite of techniques, including (1) We devise a meta-index to avoid generating invalid candidate patterns; (2) We propose an upper bound of the frequency score (i.e., MNI) of the candidate pattern, which is used to prune unqualified candidates earlier and prioritize the enumeration order of patterns; (3) We design an advanced join-based approach to compute the MNI of candidate patterns efficiently; and (4) We develop a lower bound for distance function and incrementally compute the pairwise diversity among the patterns. Using real-world knowledge graphs, we experimentally verify the efficiency and effectiveness of our proposed techniques. We also demonstrate the utility of the extracted patterns by case studies.

Top-r Keyword-Based Community Search in Attributed Graphs.

Abstract:Community search on attributed graphs has been widely studied recently. Most earlier works aim to retrieve communities relevant to the query nodes Q U and query keywords Q W , and some recent works begin to focus on keyword-based attributed community search (KACS) with only query keywords Q W , aiming to return a structural cohesive community with the highest score relevant to Q W . However, these scores only consider the semantic similarity between user attributes and Q W and neglect the semantic similarity between users in the community. Thus, we propose a new community model which considers both semantic similarities and uses triangle-connected k-truss to ensure structural cohesiveness, and study the top-r keyword-based attributed community search (rKACS) problem for a given Q W to provide more candidates for users to choose the preferred communities. To find the top-r communities, we first propose the Basic algorithm, which gradually finds the communities with large scores through maximal clique enumerations. Then, we further propose an improved algorithm Incremental based on two novel optimization techniques, which can significantly reduce the search space and find the maximal cliques incrementally. Extensive experimental studies on four real-world datasets validated the effectiveness and efficiency of our methods.
Near-optimal Top-k Pattern Mining

Abstract:Nowadays, frequent pattern mining (FPM) on large graphs receives increasing attention, since it is crucial to a variety of applications, e.g., social analysis. Informally, the FPM problem is defined as finding all the patterns in a large graph with frequency above a user-defined threshold. However, this problem is nontrivial due to the unaffordable computational and space costs in the mining process. In light of this, we propose a cost-effective approach to mining near-optimal top-k patterns. Our approach applies a "level-wise" strategy to incrementally detect frequent patterns, hence is able to terminate as soon as top-k patterns are discovered. Moreover, we develop a technique to compute the lower bound of support with smart traverse strategy and compact data structures. Extensive experimental studies on real-life and synthetic graphs show that our approach performs well, i.e., it outperforms traditional counterparts in efficiency, memory footprint, recall and scalability.

Efficient Pruned Top-K Subgraph Matching with Topology-Aware Bounds

Abstract:Given a query graph, top-k subgraph matching finds up to k matches in a data graph with the highest scores according to a user-defined scoring function. It has wide applications across many fields, including knowledge graphs and social networks. Due to the enormous search space, existing methods are not efficient enough on large graphs. In this paper, we propose PTAB, an efficient algorithm for top-k subgraph matching. It traverses an efficiently pruned search space by topology-aware sub-space score upper bounds computed from a novel hop index, which stores the range of node properties in a constrained multi-hop neighborhood of each node. Additionally, PTAB integrates a cost-aware root selection strategy, which chooses query nodes leading to a search process that utilizes the pruning power of the hop index as much as possible. Furthermore, we use a novel edge-cut strategy to handle general query graphs with cycles. Experimental results on real and synthetic datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms existing methods.

Abstract:Traditional social group analysis mostly uses interaction models, event models, or other social network analysis methods to identify and distinguish groups. This type of method can divide social participants into different groups based on their geographic location, social relationships, and/or related events. However, in some applications, it is necessary to make more specific restrictions on the members and the interactions between members of the group. Generally, Graph Pattern Matching (GPM) technique is used to solve this problem. However, the existing GPM methods rarely consider the rich contextual information of nodes and edges to measure the credibility between members. In this article, first, a social group query problem that needs to consider the trust between members of the group is proposed. Then, to solve this problem, a multi-fuzzy-constrained strong simulation matching model is proposed based on multi-constrained simulation, and a Strong Simulation GPM algorithm (NTSS) based on the exploration of pattern Node Topological ordered sequence is proposed. Aiming at the inefficiency of the NTSS algorithm when pattern graph with multiple nodes with zero in-degree and the problem of repeated calculation of matching edges shared by multiple matching subgraphs, two optimization strategies are proposed. Finally, we conduct verification experiments on the effectiveness and efficiency of the NTSS algorithm and the algorithms with the optimization strategies on four social network datasets in real applications. Experimental results show that the NTSS algorithm is significantly better than the existing multi-constrained GPM algorithm, and the NTSS_Inv_EdgC algorithm, which combines two optimization strategies, greatly improves the efficiency of the NTSS algorithm.

Abstract:Graph pattern matching (GPM) is widely used in social network analysis, such as expert finding, social group query, and social position detection. Technically, GPM is to find matched subgraphs that meet the requirements of pattern graphs in big social networks. In the application of expert community location, the nodes in the pattern graph and data graph represent expert entities, and the edges represent previous cooperations between them. However, the existing GPM methods focus on shortening the matching time and without considering the preference of the decision maker (DM), which makes it difficult for the DM to find ideal teams from numerous matches to complete the assigned task. In this article, as for the process of graph pattern matching and rematching, with a preferred expert set, i.e., the DM hopes that one or more experts in this set will appear in matched subgraphs, we propose a Dual Simulation-based Edge Sequencing-oriented Semi-Supervised GPM method (DsEs-ssGPM). In addition, considering a preferred expert set and a dispreferred expert set together, the DM hopes that experts in the dispreferred expert set will not appear in final matches, so we have the DsEs-ssGPM+ method. Technically, these DsEs-ssGPM methods conduct the matching process from the preferred expert set during dual simulation-based edge sequencing, and based on the edge sequence, these edges are searched recursively. Especially, as for the rematching process, when the preferred and/or the dispreferred expert sets change continuously, to process the GPM again is unnecessary and it is possible to revise the previous matched results partially with DsEs-ssGPM methods. Experiments on four large datasets demonstrate the effectiveness, efficiency and stability of our proposed DsEs-ssGPM methods, and the necessity of introducing an edge sequencing mechanism.

Time-Constrained Graph Pattern Matching In A Large Temporal Graph

Abstract:Graph pattern matching (GPM) is an important operation on graph computation. Most existing work assumes that query graph or data graph is static, which is contrary to the fact that graphs in real life are intrinsically dynamic. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new problem of Time-Constrained Graph Pattern Matching (TCGPM) in a large temporal graph. Different from traditional work, our work deals with temporal graphs rather than a series of snapshots. Besides, the query graph in TCGPM contains two types of time constraints which are helpful for finding more useful subgraphs. To address the problem of TCGPM, a baseline method and an improved method are proposed. Besides, to further improve the efficiency, two pruning rules are proposed. The improved method runs several orders of magnitude faster than the baseline method. The effectiveness of TCGPM is several orders of magnitude better than that of GPM. Extensive experiments on three real and semi-real datasets demonstrate high performance of our proposed methods.

Abstract:Top-k subgraph matching is a key operation in graph queries which is widely used in all kinds of applications such as social networks and knowledge graphs.Top-k subgraph matching is more challenging in distributed environments since it involves data and task transfers.Thus,existing local Top-k subgraph matching methods do not work well in distributed environments.An algorithm was developed to address this issue by dividing the problem into query decomposition,query execution,and ranked join stages.The query decomposition avoids unnecessary data transfers during the querying stage.The ranked join technique avoids generating unnecessary temporal results that reduces the overall latency of the algorithm.The algorithm effectiveness and efficiency were tested using real data and the results indicate that the algorithm,especially the optimized version,effectively solves the distributed Top-k subgraph matching problem.

Abstract:Graph pattern matching is a technique widely used in various fields such as protein structure analysis, social group querying, and expert localization. This technique involves finding matching subgraphs in large social networks that align with the patterns specified in the pattern graph. In this paper, we focus on a specific sub-problem in social group querying, known as the cooperative team query, which arises from practical applications, where the nodes in the pattern graph and the data graph represent team member entities, while the edges represent their social relationships. We note that the requirements of many teams in the real world are dynamic, necessitating iterative computation for graph pattern matching using traditional methods. To address this challenge in highly dynamic systems, we propose a graph pattern matching method based on core pattern graph matching cache. This approach involves extracting the core pattern graph, and comprising core team members based on the characteristics of cooperative teams. The core graph-based matching cache enables the second half of the algorithm to operate on an order-of-magnitude smaller graph, significantly improving efficiency. Additionally, the multi-threaded approach fully leverages hardware resources, synchronizing multiple matching result of the core pattern graph to reduce matching time. Experimental results on three real social network datasets demonstrate that our proposed algorithm, Core Pattern Graph Matching Cache-based Multi-threaded Exploration (CCMTE), significantly outperforms existing methods in terms of efficiency.

Abstract:ABSTRACTRecently, due to its wide applications, subgraph search has attracted a lot of attention from database and data mining community. Sub-graph search is defined as follows: given a query graph Q, we report all data graphs containing Q in the database. However, there is little work about sub-graph search in a single large graph, which has been used in many applications, such as biological network and social network. In this paper, we address top-k sub-graph matching query problem, which is defined as follows: given a query graph Q, we locate top-k matchings of Q in a large data graph G according to a score function. The score function is defined as the sum of the pairwise similarity between a vertex in Q and its matching vertex in G. Specifically, we first design a balanced tree (that is G-Tree) to index the large data graph. Then, based on G-Tree, we propose an efficient query algorithm (that is Ranked Matching algorithm). Our extensive experiment results show that, due to efficiency of pruning strategy, given a query with up to 20 vertices, we can locate the top-100 matchings in less than 10 seconds in a large data graph with 100K vertices. Furthermore, our approach outperforms the alternative method by orders of magnitude.

Abstract:Graphs are becoming increasingly dominant in modeling real-life networked data including social and biological networks, the WWW and the Semantic Web, etc. Graph pattern queries are useful for gathering information with expressive semantics from these graph-structured data. Current methods for graph pattern query processing have performance deficiency caused by inefficiencies of the underlying reachability index and costly merge-join operations on huge amounts of tuple-formatted intermediate results. To overcome the above problems, this paper contributes in the following aspects to boost graph pattern query evaluation. First, we propose an improved hop-based reachability indexing scheme 3-Hop which gains faster reachability query evaluation, less indexing costs and better scalabilities than state-of-the-art hop-based methods. Second, we propose a two-stage node filtering algorithm based on 3-Hop to answer tree pattern queries more efficiently. Tree pattern queries serve as the underlying facility for graph pattern query evaluation. Furthermore, we use a graph representation of the intermediate results during node filtering and final results enumeration. Experiments on real-life and synthetic datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.
