Abstract:A wavelength-tunable single-mode laser with a sub-kilohertz linewidth based on parity-time (PT)-symmetry is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The proposed PT-symmetric laser is implemented based on a hybrid use of an optical fiber loop and a thermally tunable integrated microdisk resonator (MDR). The MDR, implemented based on the silicon-on-insulator, operates with the optical fiber loop to form two mutually coupled cavities with an identical geometry. By controlling two light waves passing through the two cavities, with one having a gain coefficient and the other a loss coefficient but with an identical magnitude, a PT-symmetric laser is implemented. Thanks to an ultranarrow passband of the cavity due to PT-symmetry, single-longitudinal mode lasing is achieved. The tuning of the wavelength is implemented by thermally tuning the MDR. The proposed PT-symmetric laser is demonstrated experimentally. Single-longitudinal mode lasing at a wavelength of around 1555 nm with a sub-kilohertz linewidth of 433 Hz is implemented. The lasing wavelength is continuously tunable from 1555.135 to 1555.887 nm with a tuning slope of 75.24 pm/°C.

Abstract:The exploration of parity-time (PT) symmetry in micro-/nano-cavity lasers has recently gained immense research interest. The PT symmetric phase transition to single-mode lasing has been achieved by arranging the spatial distribution of optical gain and loss in single or coupled cavity systems. In terms of photonic crystal (PhC) lasers, a non-uniform pumping scheme is usually employed to enter the PT symmetry-breaking phase in a longitudinal PT symmetric system. Instead, we use a uniform pumping scheme to enable the PT symmetric transition to the desired single lasing mode in line-defect PhC cavities based on a simple design with asymmetric optical loss. The flexible control of gain-loss contrast is realized by removing a few rows of air holes in PhCs. We obtain single-mode lasing with a side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of around 30 dB without affecting the threshold pump power and linewidth. The output power of the desired mode is six times higher than that in multimode lasing. This simple approach enables single-mode PhC lasers without sacrificing the output power, threshold pump power, and linewidth of a multimode cavity design.

Abstract:Single-frequency ultranarrow linewidth on-chip microlasers with a fast wavelength tunability play a game-changing role in a broad spectrum of applications ranging from coherent communication, light detection and ranging, to metrology and sensing. Design and fabrication of such light sources remain a challenge due to the difficulties in making a laser cavity that has an ultrahigh optical quality (Q) factor and supports only a single lasing frequency simultaneously. Here, we demonstrate a unique single-frequency ultranarrow linewidth lasing mechanism on an erbium ion-doped lithium niobate (LN) microdisk through simultaneous excitation of high-Q polygon modes at both pump and laser wavelengths. As the polygon modes are sparse within the optical gain bandwidth compared with the whispering gallery mode counterpart, while their Q factors (above 10 million) are even higher due to the significantly reduced scattering on their propagation paths, single-frequency lasing with a linewidth as narrow as 322 Hz is observed. The measured linewidth is three orders of magnitude narrower than the previous record in on-chip LN microlasers. Finally, enabled by the strong linear electro-optic effect of LN, real-time electro-optical tuning of the microlaser with a high tuning efficiency of similar to 50 pm/100 V is demonstrated.
Stable and Tunable PT-Symmetric Single-Longitudinal-Mode Fiber Laser Using a Nonreciprocal Sagnac Loop

Abstract:A stable and tunable parity-time (PT) symmetric single-longitudinal-mode fiber laser using a nonreciprocal Sagnac loop is proposed, which is experimentally and numerically demonstrated. The nonreciprocal Sagnac loop only including a 3-dB optical coupler (OC) and a polarization controller (PC) is incorporated into a fiber ring cavity, in which the nonreciprocal light transmission between frequency-degenerate clockwise (CW) and counterclockwise (CCW) resonator modes is induced to suppress multiple-longitudinal-mode oscillation of the laser. The two light paths along the CW and CCW directions in the Sagnac loop are respectively defined as the gain and loss loops of the PT-symmetric laser, due to a controllable birefringence induced by the PC. By controlling the polarization states of the two light waves, the PT symmetry is broken when the gain coefficient is larger than the coupling coefficient, single-mode lasing is thus achieved. Experimental results show that the optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) of the single-mode lasing at 1550 nm is 43.0 dB, proving the great superiority of PT symmetry for lasing mode selection. By tuning an optical tunable band-pass filter incorporated into the fiber cavity, the wavelength of single-mode lasing varies from 1530 to 1560 nm, and their 3-dB Lorentzian linewidth varies within a range from 529 to 687 Hz. During a 30-min observation period, the variations of wavelength drift and OSNR of the single-mode lasing are less than 6 pm and 2.42 dB, respectively. The advantages of the proposed scheme are obvious, which include simple structure, low cost, simple operation, and good stability.

Abstract: Integrated single-mode microlasers with ultra-narrow linewidths play a game-changing role in a broad spectrum of applications ranging from coherent communication and LIDAR to metrology and sensing. Generation of such light sources in a controllable and cost-effective manner remains an outstanding challenge due to the difficulties in the realization of ultra-high Q active micro-resonators with suppressed mode numbers. Here, we report a microlaser generated in an ultra-high Q Erbium doped lithium niobate (LN) micro-disk. Through the formation of coherently combined polygon modes at both pump and laser wavelengths, the microlaser exhibits single mode operation with an ultra-narrow-linewidth of 98 Hz. In combination with the superior electro-optic and nonlinear optical properties of LN crystal, the mass-producible on-chip single-mode microlaser will provide an essential building block for the photonic integrated circuits demanding high precision frequency control and reconfigurability.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian photonics based on parity-time (PT) symmetry has been considered an effective solution to achieve mode selection for optical or microwave single-mode oscillation. A PT-symmetric system is usually implemented using two mutually coupled elements with identical geometry or a single element based on precise longitudinal refractive index modulation. In this study, we propose a novel scheme to achieve PT symmetry based on polarization mode manipulation in a single optical loop. By controlling the polarization states of two light waves that are propagating along the clockwise (CW) and counter-clockwise (CCW) directions in the single optical loop, two equivalent mutually-coupled loops with identical geometry and a balanced gain and loss are formed. Based on this concept, a wavelength-tunable single-mode fiber laser with a sub-kHz linewidth is realized. The tunability is achieved by thermally tuning the wavelength of an integrated microdisk resonator (MDR) incorporated in the optical loop. Experimental results show that a continuously tunable single-mode laser with a sub-kHz linewidth of 640 Hz and a wavelength tuning range from 1552.953 to 1554.147 nm is realized. The key advantages of using a single optical loop to implement PT symmetry include greatly simplified implementation and highly improved stability. The demonstration opens new avenues to implement high-performance PT-symmetric systems for applications in photonic and microwave photonic systems.

Abstract:Parity-time (PT) symmetry is a new method to get single mode operation in lasers, mostly, micro-ring lasers. In this study, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an electrically pumped PT symmetric Fabry-Perot (FP) laser which can work with a mode selection. The proposed laser could achieve the PT symmetric condition by an electrical manipulation of the interplay between gain and loss in two FP resonators. The single mode lasing is demonstrated at 1574.6nm with a 20.81dB sidemode suppression ratio.

Abstract:The concept of parity-time (PT) symmetry exploits the interplay between the material loss and gain to attain novel optical phenomena such as exceptional point and unidirectional light propagation. Here we experimentally demonstrate a PT symmetry breaking laser that allows unique control of the resonant modes. In contrast to conventional ring cavity lasers with multiple competing modes, our on-chip InGaAsP/InP based PT microring laser exhibits intrinsic single-mode lasing regardless of the gain spectral bandwidth. Threshold less parity-time symmetry breaking due to the rotationally symmetric structure leads to stable single-mode operation at the specific whispering gallery mode order.

Abstract:A single longitudinal mode (SLM) parity-time (PT) symmetric Brillouin fiber laser (BFL) based on z-cut lithium niobate phase modulator (LN-PM) Sagnac loop with Hz level linewidth is proposed and experimentally verified. A 10 km single-mode fiber provide SBS gain, while an LN-PM Sagnac loop consisting of an LN-PM and two polarization controllers (PCs) is used to achieve PT symmetry. Two mutually linked feedback loops supporting orthogonally polarized light are created by utilizing inherent birefringence of LN waveguide from LN-PM without electrical signal modulation. One of the feedback loops experiences gain in a clockwise direction and the other loss in a counterclockwise direction. The polarization state of the stokes injected into the LN-PM is controlled by adjusting the PC, and SLM BFL can be achieved when the gain and loss are well matched and exceed the coupling coefficient to break the PT symmetry. Compared with existing BFL studies, this design does not call for frequency matching of several composite cavity structures or precise control of ultra-narrow bandwidth bandpass filters. In addition, a frequency-locking system based on Pound-Drever-Hall technology is employed to lessen the instability and external disturbances brought on by the ring cavity. In the experiment, the linewidth of PT symmetry BFL based on LN-PM Sagnac loop is 3.85 Hz, according to the measured linewidth of 77 Hz at the 20 dB power point. A 65 dB optical signal-to-noise ratio and a 43 dB maximum side mode suppression ratio are measured. Furthermore, the PT symmetry BFL's wavelength is tuned between 1550 and 1550.41 nm.

Abstract:A high-power single-frequency 1178 nm continuous-wave laser is generated in a two-stage stimulated-Brillouin-scattering-suppressed all-polarization-maintaining Raman fiber amplifier pumped by 1120 nm fiber lasers. A polarization-extinction-ratio of 30 dB is achieved due to the all-polarization-maintaining configuration and the polarization dependence gain of Raman scattering. Single-pass frequency doubling with a homemade periodically poled near-stoichiometric LiT alpha O-3 crystal (PPSLT) produces an up to 7 W narrow-linewidth laser at 589 nm. Abstract:An all-normal dispersion tunable mode-locked fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror is experimentally investigated. The laser employs an all-polarization-maintaining figure-8 cavity consisted of main loop and nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. At 1030 nm, the stable mode-locked laser is initiated by adjusting two loops' pump power, which delivers pulse width of 17.61 ps, repetition frequency of 4.133 MHz, and average power of 2.151 mW. A tunable filter is employed in the cavity to select the laser wavelength as well as force the laser operating in all-normal dispersion dissipative regime. The wavelength tuning range is 1015-1080 nm while the pulse duration ranges from 7.86 ps to 17.80 ps.
High-Performance Fiber Ring Laser Based on Polarization Space Parity-Time Symmetry Breaking

Abstract:This work proposes and experimentally demonstrates a high-performance polarization space parity-time (PT) symmetric fiber ring laser to achieve a low-noise, narrow-linewidth, and highly stable single-longitudinal-mode output. The gain/loss and coupling coefficients are regulated by adjusting a polarization controller (PC) and the pumping current of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) within the ring cavity. The results show that the single longitudinal mode oscillation of the laser can be implemented by PT symmetry breaking. The frequency noise spectral density and the linewidth characteristics of the laser are evaluated by the short-delay self-heterodyne method. The results reveal that excellent low-frequency noise (181 Hz2/Hz at a 10 kHz offset frequency) and narrow fundamental linewidth (68 Hz) can be achieved. Additionally, the laser exhibits outstanding stability with only 0.64 pm wavelength drift over 30 min. By tuning an optical tunable filter (OTF), the wavelength tunable range of the laser can cover the entire C-band. Furthermore, the impacts of different fiber length on the frequency noise spectral density and the filter bandwidth on stability are analyzed, offering guidance for component selection in such laser systems.

Abstract:Parity-time (PT) symmetry is a fundamental notion in quantum field theories. It has opened a new paradigm for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians ranging from quantum mechanics, electronics, to optics. In the realm of optics, optical loss is responsible for power dissipation, therefore typically degrading device performance such as attenuation of a laser beam. By carefully exploiting optical loss in the complex dielectric permittivity, however, recent exploration of PT symmetry revolutionizes our understandings in fundamental physics and intriguing optical phenomena such as exceptional points and phase transition that are critical for high-speed optical modulators. The interplay between optical gain and loss in photonic PT synthetic matters offers a new criterion of positively utilizing loss to efficiently manipulate gain and its associated optical properties. Instead of simply compensating optical loss in conventional lasers, for example, it is theoretically proposed that judiciously designed delicate modulation of optical loss and gain can lead to PT synthetic lasing that fundamentally broadens laser physics. Here, we report the first experimental demonstration of PT synthetic lasers. By carefully exploiting the interplay between gain and loss, we achieve degenerate eigen modes at the same frequency but with complex conjugate gain and loss coefficients. In contrast to conventional ring cavity lasers with multiple modes, the PT synthetic micro-ring laser exhibits an intrinsic single mode lasing: the non-threshold PT broken phase inherently associated in such a photonic system squeezes broadband optical gain into a single lasing mode regardless of the gain spectral bandwidth. This chip-scale semiconductor platform provides a unique route towards fundamental explorations of PT physics and next generation of optoelectronic devices for optical communications and computing.
Single-Cavity Bi-Color Laser Enabled by Optical Anti-Parity-Time Symmetry

Abstract:The exploration of quantum-inspired symmetries in optical systems has spawned promising physics and provided fertile ground for developing devices exhibiting exotic functionalities. Founded on the anti-parity-time (APT) symmetry that is enabled by both spatial and temporal interplay between gain and loss, we demonstrate theoretically and numerically bi-color lasing in a single micro-ring resonator with spatiotemporal modulation along its azimuthal direction. In contrast to conventional multi-mode lasers that have mixed-frequency output, our laser exhibits stable, demultiplexed, tunable bi-color emission at different output ports. Our APT-symmetry-based laser may point out a new route for realizing compact on-chip coherent multi-color light sources.

Abstract:Effective manipulation of cavity resonant modes is crucial for emission control in laser physics and applications. Using the concept of parity-time symmetry to exploit the interplay between gain and loss (i.e., light amplification and absorption), we demonstrate a parity-time symmetry–breaking laser with resonant modes that can be controlled at will. In contrast to conventional ring cavity lasers with multiple competing modes, our parity-time microring laser exhibits intrinsic single-mode lasing regardless of the gain spectral bandwidth. Thresholdless parity-time symmetry breaking due to the rotationally symmetric structure leads to stable single-mode operation with the selective whispering-gallery mode order. Exploration of parity-time symmetry in laser physics may open a door to next-generation optoelectronic devices for optical communications and computing.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a parity-time (PT)-symmetric frequency-tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) in which the PT symmetry is implemented based on a single dual-polarization optical loop. By employing the inherent birefringence of a z-cut lithium niobate (LiNbO3) phase modulator (PM), two mutually coupled optoelectronic loops supporting orthogonally polarized light waves with one experiencing a gain and the other a loss are implemented. By controlling the gain, loss, and the coupling coefficients between the two loops, the PT symmetry breaking condition is met, which enables the OEO to operate in single mode without using an ultranarrow passband optical or microwave filter. The frequency tunability is realized using a microwave photonic filter (MPF) implemented using the PM and a phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (PS-FBG). The proposed PT-symmetric OEO is experimentally evaluated. A stable and frequency-tunable microwave signal from 2 to 12 GHz is generated. The phase noise of the generated signal at 11.8 GHz is measured, which is -124dBc/Hz at a frequency offset of 10 kHz.
Tunable multidimensional multiplexed Q-switched pulse outputs from a linear fiber laser with a bidirectional loop

Abstract:A simple all-fiber linear cavity to emit multidimensional multiplexed pulses is developed by combining fiber birefringence filter and bidirectional loop. Without unidirectional components, single polarization fiber and polarization maintaining fiber pigtails function as a bidirectional birefringence filter. Q-switched by a home-made single-wall carbon nanotube saturable absorber with the insertion loss of 16 dB, tunable wavelength/direction multiplexed Q-switched pulses were observed in the 1530-nm gain region of Er-doped fiber. When the pump power increased from 63 to 237 mW, the repetition rates of clockwise and counter-clockwise dual-wavelength Q-switched pulses respectively increased from 59 to 106 kHz and 60 to 106 kHz. Correspondingly, their output powers respectively increased from 139 to 579 μW and 107 to 512 μW. Meanwhile, by carefully adjusting the intracavity polarization controller under the same pump power of 237 mW, the switchable wavelength numbers and continuous spectral shift of wavelength multiplexed Q-switched microsecond pulses were observed. The feasibility of tunable wavelength/direction multiplexed Q-switched pulse generation is experimentally demonstrated for the first time to the best of our knowledge. Our results highlight a novel wavelength/direction multiplexed method for tunable multiple pulse emission using a simple linear fiber laser cavity, indicating high potential for continuously tunable microwave and THz generation and so on.

Abstract:In this paper, a dual-wavelength narrow-linewidth fiber laser based on parity-time (PT) symmetry theory is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The PT-symmetric filter system consists of two optical couplers (OCs), four polarization controllers (PCs), a polarization beam splitter (PBS), and cascaded fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), enabling stable switchable dual-wavelength output and single longitudinal-mode (SLM) operation. The realization of single-frequency oscillation requires precise tuning of the PCs to match gain, loss, and coupling coefficients to ensure that the PT-broken phase occurs. During single-wavelength operation at 1548.71 nm (λ1) over a 60-min period, power and wavelength fluctuations were observed to be 0.94 dB and 0.01 nm, respectively, while for the other wavelength at 1550.91 nm (λ2), fluctuations were measured at 0.76 dB and 0.01 nm. The linewidths of each wavelength were 1.01 kHz and 0.89 kHz, with a relative intensity noise (RIN) lower than −117 dB/Hz. Under dual-wavelength operation, the maximum wavelength fluctuations for λ1 and λ2 were 0.03 nm and 0.01 nm, respectively, with maximum power fluctuations of 3.23 dB and 2.38 dB. The SLM laser source is suitable for applications in long-distance fiber-optic sensing and coherent LiDAR detection.
