Abstract:Access links that connect client networks to public networks have to carry multiple-type and time-varying traffic. Those hybrid traffic flows compete for limited bandwidth, yet at the same time have drastically different performance requirements. As planning the link capacity for peak traffic demand is not economically viable, it is important that bandwidth on the access links is shared between different traffic classes in a way that maximal network utility can be achieved. In this paper, we study the frequency slot allocation problem on IP-over-elastic optical network (EON) access links that carry three types of traffic, namely, packet streams, latency critical circuit connections (e.g., video conferencing), and delay tolerant circuit connections (e.g., bulk data transfers). We define four network operation states; in each of which an access link serves traffic with different levels of fulfillment. We then formulate the allocation problem into a weak-constrained optimization problem and propose a genetic algorithm to solve it in real time. Numerical results show that the relative error of the genetic algorithm is within 3% and the access link keeps maintaining the optimal achievable network operation state. We also show that, by increasing the storage size, the access link can adapt to the increasing traffic load within a certain range without upgrading the expensive access link bandwidth. Our study provides useful insights in managing and operating IP-over-EON access links, and the concept of multiple network operation states can be generalized to networks that serve more than one type of traffic.
Optimization Model and Algorithm for Routing and Spectrum Assignment in Elastic Optical Networks

Abstract:In this paper, the problem of routing and spectrum assignment for static connection requests in elastic optical networks (EONs) is studied. Two different ratios of blocking formations are adopted, and a global constraint optimization model is established to minimize the ratio of blocking in the network. First, we propose an availability index of the frequency slots in the path. Second, a strategy of routing is designed by considering the two indexes of path length and availability index to judge the quality of the path. Then, a greedy strategy, which can obtain the largest availability index in the path after the frequency slot allocated, is proposed for the sake of assigning the spectra effectively. Simulation experiments were carried out in two network topologies. The two different ratios of blocking are obtained for different sorting strategy for connection requests and the number of connection requests. The experimental results show that the routing and spectrum assignment scheme designed in this paper can get a small ratio of blocking.
Adaptive Routing and Spectrum Allocation in Elastic Waveband Switching Optical Networks

Abstract:Several lightpaths can be switched as a single entity, so that only one pair of transmission ports will be consumed at every intermediate node, which facilitates port savings in Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM) optical networks. However, in Elastic Optical Networks (EONs), the lightpath does not occupy a fixed wavelength but a group of continuous and orthogonal subcarriers with the flexible bandwidth provisioning adjusted under the distance adaptive modulation. This means that the waveband switching in EONs involves the multi-dimensional allocation of the subcarrier, wavelength and even waveband, with the high dynamic. In this paper, to minimize the port cost and efficiently utilize spectral resources with the help of the complementary advantages of waveband switching and EONs, we propose the modulation-adaptive algorithm followed by a new waveband switching strategy. Simulation results demonstrate that our approach is cost-effective and improves the spectral efficiency of elastic waveband switching optical networks.

Abstract:We focus on the dynamic Routing and Spectrum Allocation (RSA) problem in EONs with mixed line rates. To solve the dynamic RSA problem efficiently, we decompose the problem into routing and spectrum allocation sub-problems. For the routing sub-problem, we propose an efficient multi-constrained routing algorithm, Sorted Feasible Paths Searching (SFPS), to find the shortest feasible paths for the dynamic traffic demands. For the spectrum allocation sub-problem, we propose a spectrum allocation strategy named Adaptive Segmentation (AS) to allocate spectrum for the non-commensurate traffic demands of EONs with mixed line rates. Simulation results prove that the proposed dynamic RSA algorithm is time-efficient and perform better than existing dynamic RSA algorithms in terms of bandwidth blocking probability and spectrum fragmentation ratio.

Abstract:The elastic optical network (EON) is a promising new optical technology that uses spectrum resources much more efficiently than does traditional wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). This paper focuses on the routing, modulation level, spectrum and transceiver allocation (RMSTA) problems of the EON. In contrast to previous works that consider only the routing and spectrum allocation (RSA) or routing, modulation level and spectrum allocation (RMSA) problems, we additionally consider the transceiver allocation problem. Because transceivers can be used to regenerate signals (by connecting two transceivers back-to-back) along a transmission path, different regeneration sites on a transmission path result in different spectrum and transceiver usage. Thus, the RMSTA problem is both more complex and more challenging than are the RSA and RMSA problems. To address this problem, we first propose an integer linear programming (ILP) model whose objective is to optimize the balance between spectrum usage and transceiver usage by tuning a weighting coefficient to minimize the cost of network operations. Then, we propose a novel virtual network-based heuristic algorithm to solve the problem and present the results of experiments on representative network topologies. The results verify that, compared to previous works, the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce both resource consumption and time complexity.
Robust Energy-Efficient Optimization for Heterogeneous Networks with Residual Hardware Impairments

Abstract:Resource allocation is very important for achieving interference suppression and protecting the quality of service of users in heterogeneous networks (HetNets). However, the existing works with perfect channel state information (CSI) and ideal hardware ignored the impact of channel uncertainties and hardware impairments on system performance. In this paper, we design a robust secure resource allocation algorithm with imperfect CSI to achieve the energy efficiency (EE) maximization of femtocell users for a two-tier downlink HetNet with multiple passive eavesdroppers, where the residual hardware impairments are considered at the transceivers. The formulated EE problem is non-convex with the consideration of the maximum transmit power constraint of each base station, the cross-tier interference power constraint, as well as the secure rate constraint. By using the worst-case approach and successive convex approximation, the resource allocation problem with the infinite-dimensional constraints is converted into a convex one which is efficiently solved by using convex optimization theory. Simulation results verify that the proposed algorithm has a higher EE and causes less interference power to macrocell users by comparing it with the baseline algorithms.

Abstract:Recently, optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing technology has attracted intensive research interest because spectrum-sliced elastic optical networks (EONs) can be constructed based on it. In this paper, we investigate how to serve multicast requests over EONs with multicast-capable routing, modulation level, and spectrum assignment (RMSA). Both EON planning with static multicast traffic and EON provisioning with dynamic traffic are studied. For static EON planning, we formulate two integer linear programming (ILP) models, i.e., the joint ILP and the separate ILP. The joint ILP optimizes all multicast requests together, while the separate ILP optimizes one request each time in a sequential way. We also propose a highly efficient heuristic that is based on an adaptive genetic algorithm (GA) with minimum solution revisits. The simulation results indicate that the ILPs and the GA provide more efficient EON planning than the existing multicast-capable RMSA algorithms that use the shortest path tree (SPT) and the minimal spanning tree (MST). The results also show that the GA obtains more efficient EON planning results than the separate ILP with much less running time, as it can optimize all multicast requests together in a highly efficient manner. For the dynamic EON provisioning, we demonstrate that the GA is also applicable, and it achieves lower request blocking probabilities than the benchmark algorithms using SPTand MST.

Abstract:With the rapid development of Internet of Things (IoT), IoT mobile devices host more computation-intensive and real-time applications, such as face recognition, online gaming, and augmented realityvirtual reality services. This article mainly addresses the problems of the selective resource offloading in order to achieve resource optimization in cloud-edge elastic optical networks (CE-EONs). We firstly propose two integer linear program (ILP) models to minimize both the end-to-end (E2E) latency and the total number of frequency slots by considering the latency sensitivity, followed by introducing three corresponding heuristic approaches, namely resource priority offloading (RPO), distance priority offloading (DPO), and coordinated distance and resource offloading (DRO). For comparison, we also introduced an existing resource offloading (ERO) approach in CE-EONs. On one hand, simulation results show that the DRO approach greatly approximated to the optimized solutions of ILP models in the static traffic scenario. Meanwhile, the DRO approach achieves the better performance in terms of average E2E latency. On the other hand, the proposed DRO approach can significantly reduce the blocking probability owing to much improved spectrum efficiency and achieves a graceful tradeoff between the computing resources and E2E latency compared to the RPO, DPO, and ERO approaches in the dynamic traffic scenario.

Abstract:Elastic Optical Network (EON) has been considered as a promising optical networking technology to architect the next-generation backbone networks. The spectrum management in EONs is directly determined by the Routing and Spectrum Assignment (RSA). Generally, the RSA is solved by routing the requests with lightpaths first and then assigning spectrum resources to the lightpaths to optimize the spectrum usage. Thus, the spectrum assignment explicitly determines the spectrum usage. Besides, the network topology, traffic distribution and routing scheme implicitly impact the spectrum usage. However, few related work involves this implicit impact. In this paper, we aim to provide a thoroughly theoretical analysis on the impact of the three key factors on the spectrum usage. To this end, two theoretical chains are proposed: (1) The optimal spectrum usage can be measured by the chromatic number of the conflict graph, which is positively correlated to the intersecting probability, i.e., the smaller the intersecting probability, the smaller the optimal spectrum usage; (2) The intersecting probability is determined by the network topology, traffic distribution and routing scheme via a quadratic programming parameterized with a matrix of conflict coefficients. The effectiveness of our theoretical analysis has been validated by extensive numerical results.
Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation for Elastic Optical Networks using Convex Optimization

Abstract:We propose a two-stage algorithm for energy-efficient resource allocation constrained to QoS and physical requirements in OFDM-based EONs. The first stage deals with routing, grooming and traffic ordering and aims at minimizing amplifier power consumption and number of active transponders. We provide a heuristic procedure which yields an acceptable solution for the complex ILP formulation of the routing and grooming. In the second stage, we optimize transponder configuration including spectrum and transmit power parameters to minimize transponder power consumption. We show how QoS and transponder power consumption are represented by convex expressions and use the results to formulate a convex problem for configuring transponders in which transmit optical power is an optimization variable. Simulation results demonstrate that the power consumption is reduced by 9% when the proposed routing and grooming algorithm is applied to European Cost239 network with aggregate traffic 60 Tbps. It is shown that our convex formulation for transponder parameter assignment is considerably faster than its MINLP counterpart and its ability to optimize transmit optical power improves transponder power consumption by 8% for aggregate traffic 60 Tbps. Furthermore, we investigate the effect of adaptive modulation assignment and transponder capacity on inherent tradeoff between network CAPEX and OPEX.

Abstract:In Elastic Optical Networks (EONs), two communications requests sharing common fiber links have to be separated in the spectrum domain by a guard band to prevent the interference or satisfy the security requirement, since there are types of physical impairments or attacks in the optical layer. For different interference or security levels, the size of guard band should be adapted, while it is supposed to be identical in most of the literature. To be more agile and realistic, we rise a new spectrum assignment model called Distance Spectrum Assignment (DSA): the size of guard band between two communications sharing a common fiber link varies according to the specific circumstance, and the goal is to minimize the maximum index of frequency slots assigned to satisfy all the guard band constraints. Since DSA is a strongly NP-hard problem, we propose an Integer Linear Program (ILP) model for computing the optimal solution. For solving the DSA problem in large-scale EONs, we develop a heuristic algorithm with time complexity O(n3Δ), where n is the number of requests and Δ is the maximum degree of the conflict graph. We prove that the proposed algorithm achieves an approximate ratio of O(log(n)) in complete conflict graphs. Numerical results demonstrate the proposed heuristic algorithm can find near-optimal spectrum assignments for solving the DSA problem in general topologies.

Abstract:In this paper we first provide a novel WDM-upgraded EPON architecture with single wavelength downstream at 10Gbps and multiple wavelengths upstream at 1Gbps using hybrid WDM/TDM access method. After reviewing previous work and deficiency on dynamic wavelength and bandwidth allocation schemes of WDM EPONs, we propose evolutionary schemes which based on bandwidth debit and credit to solve the problem of unfair bandwidth allocation. This proposed original method can achieve a win-win situation for both credit ONUs and debit ONUs. The credit ONUs obtain better service after crediting bandwidth to others; while the debit ONUs can consume more bandwidth in emergency, and return the debited bandwidth later. The simulation results show that these algorithms performed well in successful assurance of the SLA guaranteed bandwidth of ONUs in normal utilization and efficient network utilization, rather than penalties executed on all ONUs when there were some greedy ONUs.

Abstract:EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) is a rising bandwidth access technology, and it could realize the comprehensive operation access including data, video, and voice, with good economic characters.IEEE 802.3ah is the industrial standard of EPON, but it doesn't concretely regulate the uplink bandwidth allocation algorithm of EPON.Therefore, aiming at the uplink channel access of EPON, people have put forward various dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithms, but most of them belong to intensive algorithm, i.e. the distributed bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithm runs in OLT which is the interceder to allocate the uplink transmission time slot for ONU.A new distributed dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm (DDBA) is proposed in this article, in which ONU decides the size of transmission window based on the assistant information transmitted by OLT and self queue length.The simulation result indicates that comparing with IPACT (Interleaved Poling with Adaptive Cycle Time) (G.Kramer, 2002, P.89-107), under the high network load, DDBA could obviously improve the average end-to-end time delay and the average queue length.

Abstract:Opportunistic spectrum access（OSA） in cognitive networks significantly improves spectrum efficiency.We study the problems of channel allocation and power control in OSA.Considering both Overlay mode and Underlay mode,we address the optimization problem of maximizing secondary user throughput.Under the interference temperature constraint,the objective is to maximize the weighted sum rate of the cognitive radio network.Moreover,our approach provides diverse QoS support and the minimum data rate guarantee.The optimization problem can be converted to a maximum weighted bipartite matching problem thus solved by the Hungarian method.Simulation results demonstrate that the hybrid mode approach achieves better spectrum efficiency than single mode.

Abstract:Elastic optical network (EON) has been proposed recently as a spectrum-efficient optical layer to adapt to rapidly-increasing traffic demands instead of current deployed wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) optical network. In contrast with conventional WDM optical cross-connect (OXCs) based on wavelength selective switches (WSSs), the EON OXCs are based on spectrum selective switches (SSSs) which are much more expensive than WSSs, especially for large-scale switching architectures. So the transition cost from WDM OXCs to EON OXCs is a major obstacle to realizing EON. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a transition OXC (TOXC) structure based on 2-stage cascading switching architectures, which make full use of available WSSs in current deployed WDM OXCs to reduce number and port count of required SSSs. Moreover, we propose a contention-aware spectrum allocation (CASA) scheme for EON built with the proposed TOXCs. We show by simulation that the TOXCs reduce the network capital expenditure transiting from WDM optical network to EON about 50%, with a minor traffic blocking performance degradation and about 10% accommodated traffic number detriment compared with all-SSS EON OXC architectures.

Abstract:In recent years, the concept of the elastic optical network (EON) was proposed and very quickly became an attractive solution for flexible channel bandwidth utilization. Analogous to the routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) problem in traditional wavelength-routed networks, routing and spectrum assignment (RSA) is the most basic and critical resource management issue in EONs. In this work, we exploit and modify the layered graph model, which is a well-known RWA model, to design two RSA heuristic algorithms named LG-FF and LG-SP. Additionally, we also derive an analytical model to estimate the number of required layered graphs. Numerical results demonstrate that LG-SP can achieve the same blocking performance level with significant time complexity reduction as compared to the near-optimal solution. Whether we care about blocking performance or aim at saving computational time, the layered graph is an important representation model of resource utilization status to efficiently solve the RSA problem.

A Novel Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation Scheme in EPONs

Abstract:EPONs use a point-to-multipoint topology, in which multiple optical network units (ONUs) share one uplink channel to transmit multimedia traffic to a control element, the optical line terminal (OLT). Hence, to avoid data collision on the shared uplink, ensure a contention-free transmission and so on, medium access control arbitration mechanisms are essential for the successful implementation of EPONs. In this paper, a novel dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm, the Integrated Two Classes Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (ITCDBA), is put forward, in which the multipoint control protocol is used defined in the IEEE802.3ah standard. ITCDBA is a hierarchical allocation scheme which dynamically allocates bandwidth according to the instantaneous demands of ONUs, supporting inter-ONU priority scheduling as well as intra-ONU priority scheduling. The simulation result shows that the system throughput of EPON is improved with ITCDBA scheme and the drop rate of the traffic with the highest priority is lower than that with Two-layer bandwidth allocation (TLBA) scheme [11]. In a word, ITCDBA not only can allocate bandwidths between end users effectively and fairly, but also can support differentiated services. Besides, the system performance of EPONs with ITCDBA scheme is improved.

Abstract:This paper studies how to optimize deadline-driven bulk-data transfer to recycle spectrum fragments in elastic optical networks (EONs). We first formulate a mixed integer linear program (MILP) for offline optimization with one of two objectives: 1) maximize the average data-transfer percentage of data-oriented requests (DO-Rs), or 2) minimize the incompletable data transfers among the DO-Rs. Then, we propose two dynamic provisioning algorithms. One addresses the first objective by setting a threshold on the minimum transferred data per time slot, and the other considers both admission control and blocking-aware routing and spectrum allocation to optimize the service provisioning according to the second objective. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithms can effectively optimize the DO-Rs' data transfers according to their objectives, revitalize the spectrum fragments, and improve the network spectrumutilization significantly.

Abstract:Elastic optical networks (EONs) enable network operators to have agile bandwidth management in the optical layer. In this paper, we investigate dynamic and adaptive bandwidth defragmentation (DF) in EONs with time-varying traffic using connection reconfigurations. We consider how to design DF procedure in a systematic way, and study the problems that have not been fully explored so far. Basically, we divide the procedure design into four subproblems: "How to reconfigure?," "How to migrate traffic?," "When to reconfigure?," and "What to reconfigure?," and solve them sequentially. For "How to reconfigure?," we investigate the combination of routing and spectrum assignment (RSA) algorithms for DF, i.e., the RSA algorithm that the connections are originally served with and the algorithm that they are re-optimized with. For "How to migrate traffic?," we propose to construct a dependency graph to represent the relations among the selected connections and to use it to assist the best-effort traffic migration. A move-to-vacancy method is also proposed to further reduce the traffic disruptions. For "When to reconfigure?" and "What to reconfigure?," we propose intelligent timing selection and adaptive DF ratio selection methods to tackle the tradeoff between the bandwidth blocking probability (BBP) performance and operational complexity.
