Abstract:In today's Internet, there are many challenges such as low-latency support for interactive communication, security and privacy of user data, as well as development and deployment of new transport mechanisms. Quick UDP Internet Connections (QUIC) is a new transport protocol that addresses these challenges, focusing on HTTP/2 transmission as a first use case. The first QUIC working group meeting took place at IETF-97 in November 2016, and it has begun the standardization process. This article introduces the key features of QUIC and discusses the potential challenges that require further consideration.

Abstract:With the proliferation of mobile devices and various mobile services, ensuring smooth mobility for users has become a major challenge. The future internet is expected to be more mobile-friendly, with advancing technologies that will transform internet management in the coming decades. These technological advancements will help address mobility issues and provide a better internet experience for mobile devices and users. The transport layer plays a crucial role in the internet protocol suite by enabling communication between applications running on different servers. However, the widely used protocols, TCP and UDP, have several limitations, such as unreliability and slow performance due to three-way handshakes. To tackle these issues, Google introduced quick UDP internet connections (QUIC). QUIC aims to enhance latency, delay, and data transmission reliability. Q-MOFI, a future internet architecture focused on mobile devices and based on QUIC, strives to achieve these goals. Moreover, it enhances throughput by implementing multiplexing. Q-MOFI outperforms traditional UDP-based MOFI in terms of throughput gains, minimizing packet loss, and reducing binding operation latency, even when the number of hosts increases. The efficiency of this model has been validated through experimental testing.

Abstract:Quick UDP Internet Connections (QUIC), an Internet protocol proposed by Google to replace TCP, is already used on YouTube and Facebook. With the popularization of new multimedia applications such as VR and the development of low-cost supporting equipment, the current QUIC protocol needs to further evolve to support new multimedia data and multicast applications. Therefore, it is a promising research direction to study how to apply QUIC protocol to multicast scenario and design congestion control algorithm in multicast scenario. The working mechanism of traditional network congestion control protocols is relatively simple, and they do not have the ability to adapt to different network environments. Based on the multicast QUIC protocol, this paper proposes a reinforcement learning congestion control algorithm based on Decaying epsilon-greedy and critic-actor methods. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can greatly reduce the packet loss rate and has good adaptability in the complex and changeable network environment.

Abstract:QUIC is expected to be a game-changer in improving web application performance. In this paper, we conduct a systematic examination of QUIC's performance over high-speed networks. We find that over fast Internet, the UDP+QUIC+HTTP/3 stack suffers a data rate reduction of up to 45.2% compared to the TCP+TLS+HTTP/2 counterpart. Moreover, the performance gap between QUIC and HTTP/2 grows as the underlying bandwidth increases. We observe this issue on lightweight data transfer clients and major web browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera), on different hosts (desktop, mobile), and over diverse networks (wired broadband, cellular). It affects not only file transfers, but also various applications such as video streaming (up to 9.8% video bitrate reduction) and web browsing. Through rigorous packet trace analysis and kernel- and user-space profiling, we identify the root cause to be high receiver-side processing overhead, in particular, excessive data packets and QUIC's user-space ACKs. We make concrete recommendations for mitigating the observed performance issues.

Abstract:Recently, QUIC proposed by Google has drawn great attentions due to several attractive features which improve the page load time for Web applications. The features of QUIC lie across different protocol layers, and the benefits and the limitations introduced by each feature have not been understood sufficiently. In this paper, we focus on the transport aspect of QUIC, with the packet pacing mechanism for congestion control. We conduct an experimental study to evaluate the performance of QUIC as a general-purpose transport protocol, especially when QUIC is used concurrently with TCP, which is still the dominating transport protocol on the Internet. By doing so, we can exploit the potential of QUIC as a transport protocol in other application scenarios besides HTTP/2. It is also useful for the improvement of QUIC itself, because each object transmitted in one stream of a QUIC connection has to compete for resources with other transport protocols on the Internet. We do both testbed and real Internet experiments, on typical network environments such as 4G and WiFi. Our main findings indicate that, QUIC is less competitive than TCP in a network with little loss rate, large buffer, or large propagation delay; the 0-RTT connection establishment feature of QUIC has little advantage over TCP in practice; and the main benefit of QUIC lies in the multi-stream-based multiplexing mechanism.

Abstract:As QUIC gains attention, more applications that leverage its capabilities are emerging. These include defenses against on-path IP tracking and traffic analysis. However, the deployment of the underlying required support for connection migration remains largely unexplored. This paper provides a comprehensive examination of the support of the QUIC connection migration mechanism over the Internet. We perform Internet-wide scans revealing that despite a rapid evolution in the deployment of QUIC on web servers, some of the most popular destinations do not support connection migration yet.

Abstract:With the emerging of the fifth generation (5G) mobile communication systems and software defined networks, not only the performance of vehicular networks could be improved but also new applications of vehicular networks are required by future vehicles, e.g., pilotless vehicles. To meet requirements from intelligent transportation systems, a new vehicular network architecture integrated with 5G mobile communication technologies and software defined network is proposed in this paper. Moreover, fog cells have been proposed to flexibly cover vehicles and avoid frequently handover between vehicles and road side units (RSUs). Based on the proposed 5G software defined vehicular networks, the transmission delay and throughput are analyzed and compared. Simulation results indicate that there exist a minimum transmission delay of 5G software defined vehicular networks considering different vehicle densities. Moreover, the throughput of fog cells in 5G software defined vehicular networks is better than the throughput of traditional transportation management systems.

Abstract:5G vehicular communication is one of key enablers in next generation intelligent transportation system (ITS), that require ultra-reliable and low latency communication (URLLC). To meet this requirement, a new hybrid vehicular network structure which supports both centralized network structure and distributed structure is proposed in this paper. Based on the proposed network structure, a new vehicular network utility model considering the latency and reliability in vehicular networks is developed based on Euclidean norm theory. Building on the Pareto improvement theory in economics, a vehicular network uplink optimization algorithm is proposed to optimize the uplink utility of vehicles on the roads. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can significantly improve the uplink vehicular network utility in vehicular networks to meet the URLLC requirements.

Abstract:The transport layer is ossified. With most of the research and deployment efforts in the past decade focussing on the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and its extensions, the QUIC standardization by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is to be finalized in early 2021. In addition to addressing the most urgent issues of TCP, QUIC ensures its future extendibility and is destined to drastically change the transport protocol landscape. In this work, we present a first look at emerging protocols and their IETF standardization efforts beyond QUIC v1. While multiple proposed extensions improve on QUIC itself, Multiplexed Application Substrate over QUIC Encryption (MASQUE) as well as WebTransport present different approaches to address long-standing problems, and their interplay extends on QUIC's take to address transport layer ossification challenges.

Abstract:Quantum key distribution, initialized in 1984, is a commercialized secure communication method which enables two parties to produce shared random secret key by the nature of quantum mechanics. We propose QQUIC (Quantum assisted Quick UDP Internet Connections) transport protocol, which modifies the famous QUIC transport protocol by employing the quantum key distribution instead of the original classical algorithms in the key exchanging stage. Thanks to the provable security of quantum key distribution, the security of QQUIC key does not depend on computational assumptions. Maybe surprisingly, QQUIC can reduce the network latency in some circumstance even comparing with QUIC. To achieve this, the attached quantum connections are used as the dedicated lines for key generation.

Abstract:Currently, the most widely used protocol for the transportation layer of computer networks for reliable transportation is the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). However, TCP has some problems such as high handshake delay, head-of-line (HOL) blocking, and so on. To solve these problems, Google proposed the Quick User Datagram Protocol Internet Connection (QUIC) protocol, which supports 0-1 round-trip time (RTT) handshake, a congestion control algorithm configuration in user mode. So far, the QUIC protocol has been integrated with traditional congestion control algorithms, which are not efficient in numerous scenarios. To solve this problem, we propose an efficient congestion control mechanism on the basis of deep reinforcement learning (DRL), i.e., proximal bandwidth-delay quick optimization (PBQ) for QUIC, which combines traditional bottleneck bandwidth and round-trip propagation time (BBR) with proximal policy optimization (PPO). In PBQ, the PPO agent outputs the congestion window (CWnd) and improves itself according to network state, and the BBR specifies the pacing rate of the client. Then, we apply the presented PBQ to QUIC and form a new version of QUIC, i.e., PBQ-enhanced QUIC. The experimental results show that the proposed PBQ-enhanced QUIC achieves much better performance in both throughput and RTT than existing popular versions of QUIC, such as QUIC with Cubic and QUIC with BBR.

Abstract:Dual Connectivity (DC) is an important lower-layer feature accelerating the transition from 4G to 5G that also is expected to play an important role in standalone 5G radio networks. However, even though the packet reordering introduced by DC can significantly impact the performance of upper-layer protocols, no prior work has studied the impact of DC on QUIC. In this paper, we present the first such performance study. Using a series of throughput and fairness experiments, we show how QUIC is affected by different DC parameters, network conditions, and whether the DC implementation aims to improve throughput or reliability. Results for two QUIC implementations (aioquic, ngtcp2) and two congestion control algorithms (NewReno, CUBIC) are presented under both static and highly time-varying network conditions. Our findings provide network operators with insights and understanding into the impacts of splitting QUIC traffic in a DC environment. With reasonably selected DC parameters and increased UDP receive buffers, QUIC over DC performs similarly to TCP over DC and achieves optimal fairness under symmetric link conditions when DC is not used for packet duplication. The insights can help network operators provide modern users with better end-to-end service when deploying DC.

Abstract:While applications quickly evolve, Internet protocols do not follow the same pace. There are two root causes for this. First, extending protocol with cleartext control plane is usually hindered by various network devices such as middleboxes. Second, such extensions usually require support from all participating entities, but often these run different implementations, leading to the chicken-and-egg deployment issue. The recently standardized QUIC protocol paved the way for dealing with the first concern by embedding encryption by design. However, it attracted so much interest that there is now a large heterogeneity in QUIC implementations, hence amplifying the second problem.

Abstract:To improve the performance of mobile web services, a new transport protocol, QUIC, has been recently proposed as a substitute for TCP. However, with pros and cons of QUIC, it is challenging to decide whether and when to use QUIC in large-scale real-world mobile web services. Complex temporal correlation of network conditions, high user heterogeneity in a nationwide deployment, implementation diversity of QUIC variants limited, and resources on mobile devices all affect the selection of transport protocols. In this paper, we present WiseTrans, an adaptive transport protocol selection mechanism, to switch transport protocols for mobile web services online and improve the completion time of web requests. WiseTrans introduces machine learning techniques to deal with temporal heterogeneity, makes decisions with historical information to handle spatial heterogeneity, adopts an online learning method to keep pace with implementation variation, and switches transport protocols at the request level to reach high performance with acceptable overhead. We implement WiseTrans on two platforms (Android and iOS) in a popular mobile web service application of Baidu. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that WiseTrans can reduce request completion time by up to 25.8% on average compared to the usage of a single protocol.

Abstract:As a novel UDP-based transport protocol which supports stream multiplexing, QUIC is faster, more lightweight and flexible than TCP. With the prevalence of multi-homed devices such as smartphones with both WiFi and 4G/5G cellular connectivity, Multipath QUIC (MPQUIC) can effectively utilize multiple network interfaces (i.e., multiple paths) to improve transmission efficiency. Current MPQUIC implementation adopts the Lowest-RTT-First (LRF) scheduler which always selects the path with the lowest smoothed RTT among all available paths. However, we show that in networks with heterogeneous paths where network characteristics (e.g., RTT, loss rate) differ considerably, such scheduling scheme leads to unnecessary waiting on fast paths and bufferbloat, degrading overall transmission performance significantly. To use heterogeneous paths efficiently (i.e., to reduce the overall file transfer completion time), this paper proposes a novel scheduling mechanism that assigns data to paths with transfer simulation without causing much additional overhead. Extensive experiment results in Mininet demonstrate that the proposed scheduling mechanism can reduce the transfer completion time by up to 29.6% as compared to existing MPQUIC implementation.

Abstract:Information-centric Networking in edge computing environments exhibits the potential to significantly enhance the efficiency, reliability, and security of data transmission, making it a promising technology for future network deployments. However, the differences from traditional networks require applications to actively redevelop and redeploy onto edge devices, incurring additional costs for the proliferation of ICN applications. In this paper, we propose a system to adapt QUIC protocol over ICN networks in multi-access edge networks. The system aims to expand the application repertoire for ICN by providing a smooth transition of applications using QUIC to run on ICN networks. We design an ICN-QUIC conversion layer to manage the transmission of data from QUIC-based applications. We implement and evaluate the designed system. The experiment results show that, compared to existing networks, our system can enhance the transmission efficiency, i.e., up to 20 times better goodput in multicast situations, and achieves comparable results in unicast scenarios. We test the scalability of our system in real edge and wireless environments. We also deploy the real applications over the proposed system to demonstrate its compatibility in ICN and MEC environments.
Improving Encrypted Transport Protocol Designs: Deep Dive on the QUIC Case

Abstract:We propose in this paper to revisit the design of existing encrypted transport protocols to improve their efficiency. We call the methodology "Reverso" from reversing the order of field elements within a protocol specification. We detail how such a benign-looking change within the specifications may unlock implementation optimizations for encrypted protocols. To demonstrate our findings, we release quiceh, a QUIC implementation of QUIC VReverso, an extension of the QUIC V1 standard (RFC9000). Our methodology applied to the QUIC protocol reports ~30% of CPU efficiency improvement for processing packets at no added cost on the sender side and without relaxing any security guarantee from QUIC V1. We also implement a fork of Cloudflare's HTTP/3 module and client/server demonstrator using quiceh and show our optimizations to directly transfer to HTTP/3 as well, resulting in our new HTTP/3 to be ~ 38% more efficient than the baseline implementation using QUIC V1. We argue that Reverso applies to any modern encrypted protocol and its implementations and that similar efficiency improvement can also be unlocked for them, independently of the layer in which they operate.

Abstract:By combining the security features of TLS with the reliability of TCP, QUIC opens new possibilities for many applications. We demonstrate the benefits that QUIC brings for routing protocols. Current Internet routing protocols use insecure transport protocols. BGP uses TCP possibly with authentication. OSPF uses its own transport protocol above plain IP. We design and implement a library that allows to replace the transport protocols used by BGP and OSPF with QUIC. We apply this library to the BIRD routing daemon and report preliminary results.

Abstract:MPEG has developed a new multimedia transport protocol namely MMT for heterogeneous network transport. Considering the characteristics of both broadcast network and internet, MMT has many advantages compared to traditional transport protocols like MPEG2-TS, RTP and so on. Although MMT has defined a detailed transport protocol for broadcast delivery, the broadband transport protocol of MMT has not been implemented specifically. Nowadays, HTTP is the first choice in most MMT systems. In this paper, we develop a new MMT system using QUIC which is developed by Google as a transport protocol atop UDP as the broadband protocol. This system combines the advantages of MMT and QUIC, thus can achieve better performance than existing MMT systems. We also conduct experiments to compare the performance of the two systems. The experiment results verify that using QUIC in MMT can improve the broadband media transport in MMT system.

Abstract:Quick UDP Internet protocol (QUIC) was proposed by Google in 2012 as a reliable protocol on top of UDP. Compared with the widely used TCP for HTTP protocol, it is a new multiplexed and secure transport optimized for HTTP/2 semantics. The improvements of QUIC in terrestrial networks have been proved by previous researches, but few works have been done yet to evaluate the performance of QUIC via satellite links. In this paper, for the first time we evaluate the performance of QUIC, in comparison with HTTP/2 and HTTPS, via GEO satellite Internet access emulated on a dedicated testbed. The results of the experiments and our analysis confirm that QUIC does help reduce the overall page retrieval time in satellite networks. It is noted that QUIC outperforms HTTPS and HTTP/2 especially when the propagation delays are long and the packet loss rates are high, which is normal for GEO mobile satellite communications.
