Abstract:QoS-aware service composition intends to integrate services from different providers and maximize the global QoS in order to increase the user's satisfaction degree while subjecting to dynamic context constraints. Current composition approaches only focus on optimizing a single process to maximize the satisfaction degree for one party. When multiple processes are performed concurrently by their selfish users in a dynamic resource-constrained environment, new issues will arise, i.e., undesirable competition for service resources, extra waiting and frequent change of contexts. To address these issues, this paper aims to optimize QoS-aware services composition for multiple selfish users if the communication among users is allowed. Firstly, we propose an extensional QoS-aware service selection model for each process. Then based on this model, we present fault handling mechanisms before and during the execution of concurrent composite services for concurrent processes based on a multi-issue negotiation protocol among agents, and an adaptive context-aware service re-selection mechanism for adjusting the service execution plan for each running composite service in the dynamic resource-constrained environment. Comparative experiments reveal our approach facilitates to increase the average satisfaction degree, reduce the average waiting time of multiple users, and make the satisfaction degrees among multiple users more evenly distributed in the dynamic resource-constrained environment.
A Self-Optimizing QoS-aware Service Composition Approach in a Context Sensitive Environment

Abstract:QoS-aware service composition is aimed to maximize the global QoS of a composite service when selecting candidate services. In a context sensitive service execution environment in pervasive computing, the context information for service composition is not static: device, policy, and user constraints, and QoS requirements may change, new services may be deployed, old ones withdrawn, or existing ones change their QoS parameters. This results in the current service composition plan failing or its QoS degrading from the optimum. In this paper, a runtime self-optimizing service composition framework is proposed. An implementation of a prototype for this framework is presented, addressing the issues of reducing extra delay while increasing global QoS in service composition in a dynamic context environment. Three service re-plan algorithms are compared that can be used in dynamic context environment, i.e., minimal-conflict hill-climbing repair genetic algorithm (MCHC-repair GA), an improved penalty-based GA, and our multi-population conflicts sorted repair genetic algorithm (MP-CS-repair GA), as well as three kinds of service composition mechanisms-with backup, without backup, and our context-aware service re-selection mechanisms. The results show that our MP-CS-repair GA and context-aware service re-selection method can reduce more extra delay while acquiring a higher global QoS for the composite service in a context sensitive environment. This context-aware service re-selection mechanism also shows some adaptability to different context change frequencies and user requirements for reducing computation cost in the self-optimizing process.

Abstract:With the rapid development of cloud computing technologies, there are increasing number of Web services deployed by service providers on cloud platforms. Invoking Web services is in the form of given orders, by which the end-user can process business and information in anytime and anyway. However, existing Web service compositions mainly focus on single Web services selection and neglect to consider the fact that complex services created and aggregated by service compositions might be low global QoS (Quality of service). In this paper, the importance and necessity to construct service clusters in business process are discussed. Then, how to build up a model to solve the optimal QoS problem of Web service composition using service clusters is proposed. Third, the dynamic programming algorithm is introduced to this model. Finally, a series of experiments are carried out to evaluate our method. The results show that service cluster has advantage to obtain composite service with best QoS for the end-user.

Abstract:QoS as an important criterion has attracted more and more attention in the service selection process. Various QoS-aware service selection methods have been proposed in recent years. However, few of them take into account of the QoS correlations between services, causing several performance issues. QoS correlations can be defined as that some QoS attributes of a service are not only dependent on the service itself but are also correlated to other services. Since such correlations will affect QoS values, it is important to study how to select appropriate candidate services while taking into account of QoS correlations when generating composite services with optimal QoS values. To this end, we propose a novel method of service selection, called the correlation-aware service pruning (CASP) method. It manages QoS correlations by accounting for all services that may be integrated into optimal composite services and prunes services that are not the optimal candidate services. Our experiments show that this method can manage complicated correlations between services and significantly improve the QoS values of the generated composite services.

Abstract:Grid computing powered by Web service technology is creating abundant service-oriented applications which are promoting the sharing and collaboration of global resources. Complex tasks can be fulfilled quickly and efficiently by combining (physically distributed) individual services into a competent composite service. Since a lot of available individual services have the same functional properties while different non-functional properties (e.g. quality of service), decisions have to be made to select superior individual services from candidates for service composition. In this paper, the authors present a quality of service (QoS) model of service composition, as well as a composite service selection approach which can optimally choose the competent services, in the sense of satisfying users QoS requirement, for the demanded composite services with specified composite structures.

Abstract:With the blossom of Web services,there are many function-equivalent services with different QoS(quality of service).It has become a challenge to select services with high-quality from a set of function-equivalent services.Traditional approaches to service selection,with either partial or global optimizing strategy,process selection on all candidate services.These approaches are not suitable for selection oriented to large-scale services,as the efficiency is drastically limited by the number of services.This paper introduces the skyline approaches to improve the efficiency of selection by using the dominance relationship of skyline to prune services.It also proposes a novel skyline maintain algorithm which is suitable for dynamic service environment.An extensive performance study using synthetic data is reported to verify its efficiency.

Abstract:QoS-based service selection becomes a commonly accepted procedure to support rapid and dynamic web service composition. In this paper, we study the problem of QoS-based service selection in distributed QoS management environments where QoS values of alternative services are maintained by distributed QoS registries. A distributed heuristic approach is proposed to solve the problem efficiently with a high approximation ratio, and enable adaptability in distributed cross-organization environments with data privacy protection and a low cost of communication. The proposed approach consists of four stages in which variable elimination is used to reduce the size of the problem; constraint decomposition allows performing service selection independently on each QoS registry; supplementary service selection and concentrated optimization improve the approximation ratio. Performance analyses and simulation experiments show that the proposed approach performs efficiently with close-to-optimal results and fits well to distributed QoS management environments.

Abstract:The component service in Web service composition may fail or degrade in QoS thus needs to be replaced. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for services replacement of the composition. The target service could be replaced individually, or it could be replaced with its related services in the composition as a whole by a more complex service. In this way, far more choices will be available to repair the composition. We also present a mechanism to select the optimal service for replacement based on QoS in two phases: preliminary selection and ranking. Evaluation shows the effectiveness of our approach.

In this paper, the current QoS models and related calculation methods are first introduced, and the current strategies and approaches of services selection are then systematically analyzed and discussed. At last, several drawbacks of existing algorithms are pointed out and some research directions of this field for the future are proposed. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:Quality of service (QoS) model of composite services and web service selection based on QoS are currently the hot issues in the web service composition area. Service selection based on QoS, which is a globally optimal selection issue, is a NP-hard problem. Taking engine into consideration, this paper develops a QoS model for service selection in the web composite services. We use the algorithm on the estimation of distribution to solve the NP-hard problem of service selection and present a web service selection method based on the univariate marginal distribution algorithm (UMDA). Simulation analysis and experimental study based on the UMDA method are carried out. It is proved that the method is effective in solving the NP-hard problem.

Abstract:Many recent studies have been addressing the service selection problem based on non-functional aspects due to the ever-increasing number of web services. However, most existing works about QoS-based service composition treat the services referred in service composition as independent ones from each other, and their correlations are usually ignored. In reality, the services supplied by service providers in cloud environment are not segregate and irrelevant with each other. In view of this challenging problem, we use Finite State Machine (FSM) to prescribe the legal invocation orders of these web services, also an improved Tree-pruning-based algorithm is proposed to create the Web Service Composition Tree (WSCT). After generating all of the feasible execution paths, a Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) technique is used to select an optimal one. At last, an experiment is presented for validating the performance of the method.

Abstract:With the increasing presence of web services on the Internet, Quality of Service (QoS) is becoming important for describing non-functional characteristics of web services, and is often employed in web service composition. As QoS is an aggregated concept consisting of several attributes, service composition on enormous candidate sets is a challenging multi-objective optimization problem. In this paper, we study the problem from a general Pareto-optimal angle, seeking to reduce the search space in service composition. QoS attributes are systematically studied according to their different types of aggregation pattern in service composition, and QoS-based dominance relationships between candidates and between workflows are defined. Taking advantage of pruning candidates by dominance relationships and constraint validations at candidate level, a service composition algorithm using partial selection technique is proposed, which is able to significantly reduce the search space and achieve great performance gains. A careful analysis of the optimality of our approach is provided, and its efficacy is further validated by empirical evaluation.

Abstract:With the rapidly increasing number of independently developed Web services that provide similar functionalities with varied quality of service (QoS), service composition is considered as a problem in the selection of component services that are in accordance with users’ QoS requirements; a practice known as the QoS-aware service composition problem. However, current solutions are unsuitable for most real-time decision-making service composition applications required to obtain a relatively optimal result within a reasonable amount of time. These services are also unreliable (or even risky) given the open service-oriented environment. In this paper, we address these problems and propose a novel heuristic algorithm for an efficient and reliable selection of trustworthy services in a service composition. The proposed algorithm consists of three steps. First, a trust-based selection method is used to filter untrustworthy component services. Second, convex hulls are constructed to reduce the search space in the process of service composition. Finally, a heuristic global optimization approach is used to obtain the near-optimal solution. The results demonstrate that our approach obtains a close-to-optimal and reliable solution within a reasonable computation time.

Abstract:Under SOA (Service-Oriented Architecture), composite service is formed by aggregating multiple component services together in a given workflow. One key criterion of this research topic is QoS composition. Most work on service composition mainly focuses on the algorithms about how to compose services according to assumed QoS, without considering where the required QoS comes from and the selection of user preferred composition algorithm among those with different computational cost and different selection results. In this paper, we propose to strengthen current service composition mechanism by generation of QoS requirement and its algorithm selection based on the QoS reference vectors which are calculated optimally from the existing individual services’ QoS by registry to represent QoS overview about the best QoS, the worst (or most economical) QoS, or the average QoS of all composite services. To implement QoS requirement, which is determined according to QoS overview, this paper introduces two selection algorithms as two kinds of experiment examples, one aiming at the most accurate service selection and the other chasing for trade-off between selection cost and result. Experimental results show our mechanism can help the requester achieve his expected composite service with appropriate QoS requirement and customized selection algorithm.

Abstract:Existing methods for QoS-aware services composition only consider web services whose service class is specified in the process definition as the candidate. However, there may exist some services that could also accomplish partial goal of the web service composition but their service classes do not appear in the process definition. In this paper, we propose a new QoS-aware service composition approach, which expands the choice for services selection by allowing web services of various granularities to be available for selection. A method based on Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) is proposed to solve the QoS-based Multi-Granularity Service Selection Problem (QMGSSP), which optimizes the user-defined objective and meets the end-to-end QoS constraints as well. Experiments show the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract:The process-driven composition of Web services is emerging as a promising approach to the integration of business applications within and across organizational boundaries. To support rapid and dynamic composition of services, Web services that meet users' functional requirements must be able to be located and bounded dynamically from a large and constantly changing number of service providers based on their Quality of Service (Qos). In order to enable quality-driven Web service selection, it is necessary to make a rational and effective decision among a number of similar Web services based on Qos criteria and users' preference. In this paper, it presents a decision model of Qos criteria called DQos for evaluating Web services, which consists of an extensible Qos model, decision modes and constraints. On basis of systematic studying Qos criteria of Web service, service selection is formulated as Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM) problem which can be solved by using subjective weight mode, single weight mode, objective weight mode and subjectiveobjective weight mode. At last, DQos model is proved to be feasible and effective by simulation experiments.

Abstract:With the rapid increasing number of the independently developed web services that provide the same functionality but differ in quality of service(QoS),how to select corresponding component services for each task of a specific service composition process in the way that maximizes the aggregation QoS value,while satisfying the constraints set by the end-users is practice known as an NP hard problem.Current solutions are not suitable for most real-time decision-making service composition applications which are required to obtain an optimal result in reasonable time.In this paper,we present an approach which addresses the issue of this problem by constructing convex hulls.The proposed heuristic algorithm consists of two steps:first,convex hulls are constructed for reducing the search space,then the multi-objective optimization problem is solved based on M-HEU.The results of the experiments demonstrate that our approach can obtain a close-to-optimal solution in a reasonable amount of time.
