Abstract:In this paper, dyadic probabilistic shaping (PS) for pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) has been investigated and experimentally demonstrated for intensity-modulation and direct-detection optical interconnection systems. Improved achievable information rate can be obtained under the condition of limited bandwidth and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Theoretical investigations of generalized mutual information have been performed. 0.61- and 1.74-dB SNR gains by dyadic PS can be obtained for PAM-4 and PAM-8, respectively, to achieve error free assuming optimal 20% FEC. Meanwhile, such fixed distributions can offer a considerably broad SNR range (10.3-16.7 dB for PAM-4 and 13.4-24.6 dB for PAM-8) with positive gain. Moreover, experimental investigations have been carried out over optical multimode fiber (MMF) links at 850 nm using a commercial-product-level vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) chip. PAM-8 signaling by PS at the net rate of 75 Gb/s has been realized with 100-m OM3 fiber transmission. Energy efficient signaling can be achieved with up to 46% theoretical power reduction by PS. Experimentally, we obtained 16% reduction of optical power for the VCSEL-MMF optical link. The dyadic distribution of PS, due to its simplicity of coding, as well as considerable shaping gain and energy efficiency, is expected to be an opportune solution for the cost-sensitive short-reach scenarios.

Abstract:An optical amplification-free deep reservoir computing (RC)-assisted high-baudrate intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) system is experimentally demonstrated using a 100G externally modulated laser operated in C-band. We transmit 112 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) and 100 Gbaud 6-level PAM (PAM6) signals over a 200-m single-mode fiber (SMF) link without any optical amplification. The decision feedback equalizer (DFE), shallow RC, and deep RC are adopted in the IM/DD system to mitigate impairment and improve transmission performance. Both PAM transmissions over a 200-m SMF with bit error rate (BER) performance below 6.25% overhead hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold are achieved. In addition, the BER of the PAM4 signal is below the KP4-FEC limit after 200-m SMF transmission enabled by the RC schemes. Thanks to the use of a multiple-layer structure, the number of weights in deep RC has been reduced by approximately 50% compared with the shallow RC, whereas the performance is comparable. We believe that the optical amplification-free deep RC-assisted high-baudrate link has a promising application in intra-data center communications.
High-Speed PAM4-Based Optical SDM Interconnects with Directly Modulated Long-Wavelength VCSEL

Abstract:This paper reports the demonstration of high-speed PAM-4 transmission using a 1.5-mu m single-mode vertical cavity surface emitting laser (SM-VCSEL) over multicore fiber with 7 cores over different distances. We have successfully generated up to 70 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) signals with a VCSEL in optical back-to-back, and transmitted 50 Gbaud PAM-4 signals over both 1-km dispersion-uncompensated and 10-km dispersion-compensated in each core, enabling a total data throughput of 700 Gbps over the 7-core fiber. Moreover, 56 Gbaud PAM-4 over 1-km have also been shown, whereby unfortunately not all cores provide the required 3.8 x 10(-3) bit error rate (BER) for the 7% overhead-hard decision forward error correction (7% OH-HDFEC). The limited bandwidth of the VCSEL and the adverse chromatic dispersion of the fiber are suppressed with preequalization based on accurate end-to-end channel characterizations. With a digital postequalization, BER performance below the 7% OH-HDFEC limit is achieved over all cores. The demonstrated results show a great potential to realize high-capacity and compact short-reach optical interconnects for data centers.

Abstract:Chirp-dispersion and data transmission analyses of the multimode vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (MM-VCSEL) with a 7.5-m oxide-confined aperture and a root-mean-square spectral linewidth of 1nm is performed for intra-data-center application. For directly modulating the non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK) and the 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) data streams, an optimized bias current of 17mA and a data amplitude of 800 mV are selected to provide the MM-VCSEL with an output optical power of 6.1mW and a transverse mode number of 17. Such an optimized operation enables the MM-VCSEL with a differential resistance of 45.3 to approach the impedance matching by driving the circuit such that the 3-dB bandwidth can be achieved to 23.8GHz. The relative intensity noise and mode-partition-noise of the MM-VCSEL are analyzed to perform the optimized NRZ-OOKPAM4 data encoding. By utilizing the pre-emphasis technique to compensate for the intensity and phase variation, the encoded NRZ-OOK and PAM-4 can be respectively promoted to 61Gbits and 96Gbits in the back-to-back (BtB) case. After passing through the 100-m OM5 multi-mode-fiber (MMF) link to suffer the severe modal dispersion, the data rate would respectively degrade to 45Gbits (or 4.5Gbitkms) and 70Gbits (or 7Gbitkms) for OOK and PAM-4 transmission.

Abstract:We compare the modulation efficiency of on–off keying (OOK) and four-level pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM4) using 1.3 μm wafer-fusion vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) for single-channel short-reach optical interconnects. O-band wafer-fusion VCSELs combine high optical gain from InP-based active regions with high-reflectivity, low-absorption, and high-thermal-conductive GaAs-based distributed Bragg reflectors. VCSELs offer a low-cost and low-power-consuming light source for optical interconnects in data centers and fiber-based local-area networks, presenting an attractive alternative to common edge-emitting lasers. Our investigation focuses on the highest error-free bit rates and energy efficiency of OOK and PAM4 signaling. We achieved an error-free bit rate of 38 Gbit/s with PAM4 for devices having a small-signal bandwidth of 9.9 GHz, presenting a spectral efficiency of 3.8 bit/s/Hz. These PAM4 values offer an improved error-free bit rate of 26% and consume 32% less energy-per-bit when compared to OOK.

Abstract:Stochastic nonlinear impairment is the primary factor that limits the transmission performance of high-speed orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-division multiplexing (MDM) optical fiber communication systems. This Letter presents a low-complexity adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (LANFIS) nonlinear equalizer for OAM-MDM intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission with three OAM modes and 15 wavelength division multiplex (WDM) channels. The LANFIS equalizer could adjust the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the distorted pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) symbols to fit the statistical characteristics of the WDM-OAM-MDM transmission channel. Therefore, although the transmission symbols in the WDM-OAM-MDM system are subjected to a stochastic nonlinear impairment, the proposed LANFIS equalizer can effectively compensate the distorted signals. The proposed equalizer outperforms the Volterra equalizer with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 2, 1.5, and 1.3 dB for three OAM modes at a wavelength of 1550.12 nm, respectively. It also outperforms a CNN equalizer, with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 1, 0.5, and 0.3 dB, respectively. Moreover, complexity reductions of 67%, 74%, and 99.9% are achieved for the LANFIS equalizer compared with the Volterra, CNN, and ANFIS equalizers, respectively. The proposed equalizer has high performance and low complexity, making it a promising candidate for a high-speed WDM-OAM-MDM system.

Abstract:Intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) optical interconnect systems are susceptible to waveform distortion caused by complex nonlinearities. To reduce the effect of waveform distortion on signal transmission accuracy, in this paper, a random forest (RF) equalization algorithm based on decision tree (DT) integration is proposed for cost-sensitive IM/DD systems, which has the characteristics of nonlinear classification and regression. The performance of the RF equalizer is verified by simulation experiments on a 120 Gbps 8-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM8) transmission system using an electro-absorption-modulated laser (EML). Simulation studies show that whether it is a back-to-back (B2B) transmission system or a 10 km optical fiber transmission system, the RF equalization scheme can achieve much better bit error rate (BER) performance than the traditional equalization scheme. In addition, in both transmission cases, the RF equalization scheme enables efficient classification of signals and is much less simpler than the artificial neural network (ANN) equalization scheme.

Abstract:The intensity modulation and direct detection ( IM/DD) systems have been widely investigated and demonstrated to fulfil the requirement of short reach data communication links with simple implementation. DMLs are a low cost solution for IM/DD systems due to their low power dissipation, small footprint and high output optical power. However, for DMLs, the driving current can influence the optical density at its active region, hence the intrinsic chirp affects the generated optical carrier and results in distortions of the signals, which reduces transmission rates and signals decision accuracy. We propose a machine learning-based decision technique to mitigate nonlinear distortions of the DMLs without using any nonlinear processing, and demonstrate a 60-Gb/s PAM-8 IM/DD system using a DML. About 0.6-dB receiver sensitivity improvement is achieved after 2km transmission.

Abstract:After visible light communication drawing increasing attention, underwater visible light communication (UVLC) has attracted more interest in the research community nowadays. As multiple input single output (MISO) is getting increasingly widely used to improve the transmission speed in UVLC system, the unbalance between multiple transmitters’ power is still a common phenomenon, which leads to the unequal spacing between each adjacent level and damages the system performance. In this paper, we study and analyze the unbalance between the two transmitters. Compared to a traditional hard decision, a density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) of a machine learning method is employed to get the actual center of each cluster and distinguish each level of PAM7 signals. In this way, a new decision curve substitutes traditional standard straight line as a constellation discrimination method. The experimental results show that up to 1.22 Gb/s over 1.2 m underwater visible light transmission can be achieved by using DBSCAN for PAM7 MISO signals. The measured bit error rate is well under the hard decision-forward error correction threshold of 3.8 × 10−3.

Abstract:Intensity modulation-direct detection (IM/DD) technology is considered a low-cost, high-capacity, and low-latency solution for short-reach optical connection applications such as data center networks (DCNs) and passive optical networks (PONs), but chromatic dispersion (CD) is the main factor limiting transmission distance. The development of silicon photonics technology has greatly reduced the size of optical dispersion compensators (ODCs) and is expected to replace traditional dispersion compensation fibers. In this paper, we demonstrate a compact ODC based on an on-chip chirped waveguide Bragg grating (CWBG) that simultaneously achieves large dispersion and wide bandwidth. On-chip ODC-enabled C-band beyond 200Gbps net data rate PAM4/PAM8 transmission over 30km single-mode fiber (SMF), and optical vestigial sideband (VSB) PAM4 signal transmission over 25km SMF, are demonstrated with simple receiver digital signal processing (DSP) and low latency.
Optical Superimposition-Based PAM-4 Signal Generation for Visible Light Communication

Abstract:A pulse amplitude modulation with 4 levels (PAM-4), generated by optical superimposition, is first proposed and experimentally demonstrated for visible light communication (VLC). It can overcome the shortcomings of the PAM-4 signals generated in the electrical domain, with enhanced tolerance to the modulation nonlinearities of a light emitting diode (LED). A proof-of-concept experiment employing two blue LEDs has been conducted in this work. We achieve a 12.288-Mb/s PAM-4 signal, within a 2.5-MHz system bandwidth, by superimposing two different on-off keying (OOK)-modulated signals in the optical domain and investigate the BER performance over 2-m, 3-m, 4-m, 5-m and 6-m air channels. At this bit rate, the available maximum transmission distance is 4 m in the air and the corresponding BERs of the two OOK signals are 8.39×10 -5 and 1.43 ×10 -3 , respectively.

Abstract:A decision feedback equalization (DFE) algorithm is proposed by simplifying Volterra structure. The simplification principle and process of the proposed Volterra-based equalization algorithm are presented. With the support of this algorithm, the signal damage for four-level pulse amplitude modulation signal (PAM-4) is compensated, which is caused by device bandwidth limitation and dispersion during transmission in C-band intensity modulation direct detection (IM-DD) fiber system. Experiments have been carried out to demonstrate that PAM-4 signals can transmit over 2 km in standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) based on a 30 GHz Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). The bit error rate ( BER ) can reach the threshold of hard decision-forward error correction (HD-FEC) ( BER =3.8×10 −3 ) and its sensitivity is reduced by 2 dBm compared with traditional feedforward equalization (FFE). Meanwhile, the algorithm complexity is greatly reduced by 55%, which provides an effective theoretical support for the commercial application of the algorithm.

Abstract:Power-fading impairment induced by fiber dispersion and photodiode detection imposes a fundamental limitation on the intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM-DD) transmission systems. In this work, we propose a cost-effective pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM) signal transmission scheme with power-fading mitigation enabled by Alamouti coding and dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DDMZM). By interleaving the symbol blocks in the time domain for upper- and lower-arm of the DDMZM, flat end-to-end frequency response can be obtained without spectral nulls after combining the photocurrents at odd and even time slots. For single channel demonstration, we experimentally transmit up to 160Gb/s PAM-4, 140Gb/s PAM-6, and 108Gb/s PAM-8 signals over 80 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) with bit-error rates (BERs) below the 20% soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 2.0x10(-2). For wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission, 8 lambda x150Gb/s PAM-4 signals spacing at 1(X) GHz can also achieve 80 km reach. Moreover, we compare the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) sensitivity with single sideband (SSB) scheme and evaluate the tolerance of bias deviation in numerical simulation. The proposed Alamouti coding-based scheme provides a hardware-efficient and dispersion-tolerant candidate for high-speed inter-data center interconnect (DCI) applications. High tolerance against chirp induced distortions in PAM4-based digital mobile fronthaul by sample bits interleaving

Abstract:Directly modulated lasers (DMLs) and electro-absorption modulated lasers (EMLs) are key transmitter options in future short-haul networks. However, both of them suffer from frequency chirp, which incurs nonlinear distortions, especially to high order modulation signals. In this paper, we investigate their application in PAM4-based digital mobile fronthaul and propose a scheme to remarkably improve the fidelity of radio signal. We first give a detailed study of the BER distribution of DML/EML based PAM4 signals and find that the BER of the second bit is much higher than that of the first bit in both systems. Accordingly, we propose to adopt sample bit interleaving to reduce the radio signal distortions caused by sample bit errors. Experimental results of 56Gbps I/Q data transmission reveal that, in a DML-based transmission system, the proposed scheme respectively leads to up to 8dB and 13dB EVM reduction to accommodate 33 × 100MHz 1024QAM OFDM signals and 64QAM OFDM signals in 10km and 20km cases. As well as in an EML-based transmission system, 14dB EVM reduction is achieved in 10km to finally accommodate 33 × 100MHz 256QAM OFDM signal.

Abstract:The limited band of optical and electrical devices in an intensity-modulation direct detection (IM/DD) system is considered to be a major bottleneck that hinders the increase in transmission capacity. Spectrally efficient modulation formats and advanced digital signal processing are key technologies to improving the performance of IM/DD for high-speed short-reach optical systems. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel Nyquist eight-level, pulse-amplitude, single-carrier modulation with frequency-domain equalization (PAM8-SCFDE). In addition, 40-GBd Nyquist PAM8-SCFDE signals can be successfully transmitted over 2-km standard single-mode fiber or 20-km large effective area fiber based on 10-G-class DAC and photodiode. Therefore, the achieved aggregate data rate is 120 Gb/s, and the measured bit error rate (BER) is under 7% pre-forward-error-correction (FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10-3. Compared with conventional PAM8, this scheme can provide double spectral efficiency and 6-dB receiver sensitivity improvement.

Abstract:The demand for high-speed data transmission has increased rapidly in data centers, leading to advanced optical communication technology innovation. At high modulation speed, severe linear and nonlinear signal distortions degrade the link performance. In order to increase the transmission capacity, a robust signal detection method based on quadratic discrimination in augmented space (QDAS) is proposed for high-speed intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) optical communication systems. By projecting along the feature vector initially obtained by the objective function following the generalized Rayleigh quotient, signals with different features can be separated in augmented space. Subsequently, decision optimization is achieved through a quadratic discriminant model. Experimental verification is performed based on the 120 Gbps PAM8-modulated vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) multimode fiber (MMF) optical link (100 m). The results show that, compared with the traditional Volterra nonlinear equalizer (VNLE), the proposed QDAS detection method shows improved and robust bit error ratio (BER) performance with the same complexity. Abstract:Organic photo-detector (OPD) is lightweight and physically flexible. It can transform plastic or glass into smart surfaces. Visible light communication (VLC) is considered as one of the promising technologies for the future wireless communications. VLC combines the advantages of lighting and communication simultaneously. Besides, it can be deployed using existing lighting infrastructure; hence little extra cost is needed to provide this wireless communication. As the OPD has a large optical detection area, it would be interesting to employ the OPD as VLC receiver (Rx). If the OPD can be used in the VLC systems, it can benefit the Internet-of-Thing (IoT) networks by providing efficient human-to-machine and machine-to-machine communications. However, implementing VLC using OPD Rx is challenging. Due to the slow charging and discharging processes of the OPD, the optical-to-electrical response speed is limited. Besides, the OPD requires external bias to be operated. Here, we propose and demonstrate using pre-distortion scheme for pulse-amplitude-modulation (PAM) signal to a self-powered PCBM:P3HT OPD to enhance the VLC transmission performance. The operation of the self-powered PCBM:P3HT OPD is discussed. Both experiments using PAM-2 and PAM-4 (with and without pre-distortion) are evaluated. The performance, requirement and capability limitations of the pre-distortion schemes are also analyzed and discussed by using numerical simulations.
