Abstract:Environmental energy harvesting technologies have provided potential for battery-powered wireless sensor networks to have perpetual network operations. To design a robust network that can adapt to not only temporal but also spatial variations of ambient energy sources, in this paper, we utilize mobility to circumvent communication bottlenecks, by employing a mobile data collector, called SenCar. We propose a two-stage approach for mobile data collection. In the first stage, SenCar makes stops at a subset of selected sensor locations to collect data packets in a multi-hop fashion. We provide a selection algorithm to search for sensor locations with most residual energy while guaranteeing a bounded tour length. Then we design a distributed data gathering algorithm to achieve maximum network utility by adjusting data rates, link scheduling and flow routing that adapts to spatial temporal environmental energy variations. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithms are validated by extensive numerical results.

Abstract:Recent advances in environmental energy harvesting technologies have provided great potentials for traditional battery powered sensor networks to achieve perpetual operations. Due to dynamics from the temporal profiles of ambient energy sources, most of the studies so far have focused on designing and optimizing energy management schemes on single sensor node, but overlooked the impact of spatial variations of energy distribution when sensors work together at different locations. To design a robust sensor network, in this paper, we use mobility to circumvent communication bottlenecks caused by spatial energy variations. We employ a mobile collector, called SenCar, to collect data from designated sensors and balance energy consumptions in the network. To show spatial-temporal energy variations, we first conduct a case study in a solar-powered network and analyze possible impact on network performance. Next, we present a two-step approach for mobile data collection. First, we adaptively select a subset of sensor locations where the SenCar stops to collect data packets in a multi-hop fashion. We develop an adaptive algorithm to search for nodes based on their energy and guarantee data collection tour length is bounded. Second, we focus on designing distributed algorithms to achieve maximum network utility by adjusting data rates, link scheduling, and flow routing that adapts to the spatial-temporal environmental energy fluctuations. Finally, our numerical results indicate the distributed algorithms can converge to optimality very fast and validate its convergence in case of node failure. We also show advantages of our framework such as it can adapt to spatial-temporal energy variations and demonstrate its superiority compared to the network with static data sink.

The use of data ferries can significantly reduce energy consumption at sensor nodes and increase network lifetime. However, it usually incurs longer data delivery latency as the data ferry needs to travel through the network to collect data, during which some delay-sensitive data may become obsolete. Therefore, optimizing the trajectory of the data ferry with data delivery latency bound is important for this approach to be effective in practice. To address this problem, we formally define the time-constrained data harvesting problem, which seeks an optimal data harvesting path in a network to collect as much data as possible within a time duration. We first characterise the performance bound given by the optimal data harvesting algorithm and show that the optimal algorithm significantly outperforms the random algorithm, especially when network scales. Motivated by the theoretical analysis and proving the NP-completeness of the time-constrained data harvesting problem, we then devise polynomial-time approximation schemes (PTAS) and mathematically prove the output being a constant-factor approximation of the optimal solution.
Self-sustainable Sensor Networks with Multi-source Energy Harvesting and Wireless Charging.

Abstract:Energy supply remains to be a major bottleneck in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). A self-sustainable network operates without battery replacement. Recent efforts employ multi-source energy harvesting to power sensors with ambient energy. Meanwhile, wireless charging is considered in WSNs as a reliable energy source. It motivates us to integrate both fields of research to build a self-sustainable network and guarantee operation under any weather condition. We propose a three-step solution to optimize this new framework. We first solve the Sensor Composition Problem (SCP) to derive the percentage of different types of sensors. Then we enable self-sustainability by bringing energy harvesting storage to the field for charging the Mobile Charger (MC). Next, we propose a 3-factor approximation algorithm to schedule sensor charging and energy replenishment of MC. Our extensive simulation results demonstrate significant improvement of network lifetime and reduction of network cost. The network lifetime can be extended at least three times compared with traditional approaches and the charging capability of MC increases at least 100%.
Mobility Assisted Data Gathering in Heterogeneous Energy Replenishable Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract:Wireless sensor networks adopting static data gathering may suffer from unbalanced energy consumption due to non-uniform packet relay in such networks, especially in large scale networks. On the other hand, although mobile data gathering provides a reasonable approach to solving this problem, it inevitably introduces longer data collection latency due to the use of mobile data collectors. In the meanwhile, energy harvesting has been considered as a promising solution to relieve energy limitation in wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we consider a joint design of these two schemes and propose a novel two layer heterogeneous architecture for wireless sensor networks, which consists of two types of nodes: sensor nodes which are static and powered by solar panels, and cluster heads that have limited mobility and can be wirelessly recharged by power transporters. Based on this network architecture, we present a data gathering scheme, called Mobility Assisted Data Gathering (MADG), where sensor nodes are clustered around cluster heads that change their positions in each data gathering cycle, and the sensing data are forwarded to the data sink by these cluster heads working as data aggregation points. We evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme by extensive simulations and the results show that MADG provides significant improvement in terms of balancing energy consumption and the amount data gathered compared to previous work.

Our experimental results also demonstrate that our approximation algorithm significantly outperforms the random algorithm in a wide range of network settings.

Abstract:The emerging wireless energy transfer technology enables charging sensor batteries in a wireless sensor network (WSN) and maintaining perpetual operation of the network. Recent breakthrough in this area has opened up a new dimension to the design of sensor network protocols. In the meanwhile, mobile data gathering has been considered as an efficient alternative to data relaying in WSNs. However, time variation of recharging rates in wireless rechargeable sensor networks imposes a great challenge in obtaining an optimal data gathering strategy. In this paper, we propose a framework of joint Wireless Energy Replenishment and anchor-point based Mobile Data Gathering (WerMDG) in WSNs by considering various sources of energy consumption and time-varying nature of energy replenishment. To that end, we first determine the anchor point selection and the sequence to visit the anchor points. We then formulate the WerMDG problem into a network utility maximization problem which is constrained by flow conversation, energy balance, link and battery capacity and the bounded sojourn time of the mobile collector. Furthermore, we present a distributed algorithm composed of cross-layer data control, scheduling and routing subalgorithms for each sensor node, and sojourn time allocation subalgorithm for the mobile collector at different anchor points. Finally, we give extensive numerical results to verify the convergence of the proposed algorithm and the impact of utility weight on network performance.

Abstract:In this paper, a three-layer framework is proposed for mobile data collection in wireless sensor networks, which includes the sensor layer, cluster head layer, and mobile collector (called SenCar) layer. The framework employs distributed load balanced clustering and dual data uploading, which is referred to as LBC-DDU. The objective is to achieve good scalability, long network lifetime and low data collection latency. At the sensor layer, a distributed load balanced clustering (LBC) algorithm is proposed for sensors to self-organize themselves into clusters. In contrast to existing clustering methods, our scheme generates multiple cluster heads in each cluster to balance the work load and facilitate dual data uploading. At the cluster head layer, the inter-cluster transmission range is carefully chosen to guarantee the connectivity among the clusters. Multiple cluster heads within a cluster cooperate with each other to perform energy-saving inter-cluster communications. Through inter-cluster transmissions, cluster head information is forwarded to SenCar for its moving trajectory planning. At the mobile collector layer, SenCar is equipped with two antennas, which enables two cluster heads to simultaneously upload data to SenCar in each time by utilizing multi-user multiple-input and multiple-output (MU-MIMO) technique. The trajectory planning for SenCar is optimized to fully utilize dual data uploading capability by properly selecting polling points in each cluster. By visiting each selected polling point, SenCar can efficiently gather data from cluster heads and transport the data to the static data sink. Extensive simulations are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed LBC-DDU scheme. The results show that when each cluster has at most two cluster heads, LBC-DDU achieves over 50 percent energy saving per node and 60 percent energy saving on cluster heads comparing with data collection through multi-hop relay to the static data sink, and 20 percent shorter data collection time compared to traditional mobile data gathering.
Enabling Predictable Wireless Data Collection in Severe Energy Harvesting Environments

Abstract:Micro-powered wireless embedded devices are widely used in many application domains. Their efficiency in practice, however, is significantly constrained by the dual limitations of low harvesting rates and tiny energy buffer. Recent research presents a network stack that efficiently fragments a large packet into many smaller packets that can fit within the available energy in the energy buffer of limited size. While this fragmentation technique represents a major step forward in solving the minuscule energy budget problem, it also introduces a tremendous practical challenge where potentially many fragmented packets belonging to different devices may contend for the communication channel. Designing purely heuristic-based packet transmission protocol is undesirable because the resulting per-packet and end-to-end transmission delay are unknown, thus causing unpredictable system performance which is unacceptable for many applications with real-time constraints. In this paper, we first formulate this packet transmission scheduling problem considering physical properties of the charging and transmission processes. We then develop a novel packet prioritization and transmission protocol NERF that yields tight and predictable delay bounds for transmitting packets from multiple micropowered devices to a charger. We have implemented our protoco on top of the WISP 4.1 platform and the SPEEDWAY RFID READER, and conducted validation experiments. Our experiments validate the correctness of our implementation and show that NERF can reduce the total collection delay by 40% when compared to an existing protocol ALOHA. We have also performed extensive data trace-driven simulations. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed protocol. On average, our protocol yields an over 30%improvement in terms of runtime transmission delay compared to existing methods, while being able to guarantee tight and provable response time bounds.
An energy-efficient TDMA scheduling for data collection in wireless sensor networks

Abstract:In a low traffic wireless sensor network, the energy spent on nodes' state switching is non-negligible because of limited energy consumption on data transmission. In this paper, we proposes a centralized scheduling algorithm to minimize the nodes' state switching times by using TDMA and multichannel techniques. Our algorithm uses a receiver-based slot assignment strategy to assign consecutive slots to nodes so that the nodes can finish their data collection continuously only need to wake-up once. In addition, a greedy channel assignment approach is used to minimize the number of channels, and we prove the number of channels used by our algorithm is less than log2N+1, where N denotes the number of nodes in the data collection tree. The simulation results show our algorithm can reduce the energy consumption by minimizing the state switching times and so increasing the life-time of nodes. In addition, our algorithm also can achieve the optimum data collection time.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed growing research interest in wireless sensor networks. In the literature, three data storage strategies, i.e., local, data-centric, and index-centric, have been proposed to answer one-shot queries originated from inside the network. Through careful analysis, we show in this paper that each of the three strategies respectively achieves the best performance in a certain range of query-rate to update-rate (Q2U) ratios. We therefore propose several adaptive schemes which periodically adjust the data storage and dissemination strategy in accordance with the Q2U ratio observed in the network. Experimental results demonstrate that in dynamic environments the proposed adaptive schemes substantially outperform the three basic strategies.
An Energy-Efficient Data Collection Scheme for Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract:Keeping data collecting while preserving the scarce energy of sensor nodes is always one of the most crucial problems in wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we propose the DCS scheme to effectively exploit the ubiquitous temporal-spatial correlation in most natural phenomena for energy-efficient data collection of wireless sensor networks. Specifically, for temporal correlation, we build lightweight AR model locally to capture data distribution at sensor node; for spatial correlation, by making use of our novel definition of similarity measure between sensor nodes, we perform centralized model clustering, which is a kind of clustering that emphasizes data similarity between nodes but ignores geographical distance, to group sensor nodes with similar data distribution on both magnitude and trend into the same cluster. Then through scheduling sensor nodes to report readings alternately and performing dual-prediction at both sensor nodes and Sink, DCS acquires sensing readings without compromising too much data accuracy loss. Simulation results illustrate the efficiency of DCS scheme on a data set synthesized from real-world temperature data, i.e., 82.94% communication overhead reduction while keeping data error as low as 0.0456°C when user-provided error-tolerance threshold sets as 0.2°C.

Abstract:We consider the problem of data collection from a continental-scale network of energy harvesting sensors, applied to tracking mobile assets in rural environments. Our application constraints favour a highly asymmetric solution, with heavily duty-cycled sensor nodes communicating with powered base stations. We study a novel scheduling optimisation problem for energy harvesting mobile sensor network, that maximises the amount of collected data under the constraints of radio link quality and energy harvesting efficiency, while ensuring a fair data reception. We show that the problem is NP-complete and propose a heuristic algorithm to approximate the optimal scheduling solution in polynomial time. Moreover, our algorithm is flexible in handling progressive energy harvesting events, such as with solar panels, or opportunistic and bursty events, such as with Wireless Power Transfer. We use empirical link quality data, solar energy, and WPT efficiency to evaluate the proposed algorithm in extensive simulations and compare its performance to state-of-the-art. We show that our algorithm achieves high data reception rates, under different fairness and node lifetime constraints.

Abstract:The energy efficient and real-time data collecting problem in wireless sensor network was stud-ied. The mobile data collecting protocol consists four phases: nodes clustering, routes planning, routes combine and data collecting is proposed. Two heuristic algorithms save and nearest neighbor were presen-ted to build data collecting routes which incur the least mobile cost while satisfy the deadline constraint. Simulations show that the proposed heuristic routes planning algorithms have good performance in terms of energy saving, deadline guarantee and travel cost reduction.
Harvest: A Reliable and Energy Efficient Bulk Data Collection Service for Large Scale Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract:We present a bulk data collection service, Harvest, for energy constrained wireless sensor nodes. To increase spatial reuse and thereby decrease latency, Harvest performs concurrent, pipelined exfiltration from multiple nodes to a base station. To this end, it uses a distance-k coloring of the nodes, notably with a constant number of colors, which yields a TDMA schedule whereby nodes can communicate concurrently with low packet losses due to collision. This coloring is based on a randomized CSMA approach which does not exploit location knowledge. Given a bounded degree of the network, each node waits only O$(1)$ time to obtain a unique color among its distance-k neighbors, in contrast to the traditional deterministic distributed distance-k vertex coloring wherein each node waits O$(\Delta^{2})$ time to obtain a color. Harvest offers the option of limiting memory use to only a small constant number of bytes or of improving latency with increased memory use; it can be used with or without additional mechanisms for reliability of message forwarding. We experimentally evaluate the performance of Harvest using 51 motes in the Kansei testbed. We also provide theoretical as well as TOSSIM-based comparison of Harvest with Straw, an extant data collection service implemented for TinyOS platforms that use one-node at a time exfiltration. For networks with more than 3-hops, Harvest reduces the latency by at least 33% as compared to that of Straw.

Abstract:In delay tolerant WSNs mobile ferries can be used for collecting data from sensor nodes, especially in large-scale networks. Unlike data collection via multi-hop forwarding among the nodes, ferries travel across the sensing field and collect data from sensors. The advantage of using a ferry-based approach is that, it eliminates the need for multi-hop forwarding of data, and as a result energy consumption at the nodes is significantly reduced. However, this increases data delivery latency and as such might not be suitable for all applications. In this paper an efficient data collection algorithm using a ferry node is proposed while considering the overall ferry roundtrip travel time and the overall consumed energy in the network. To minimize the overall roundtrip travel time, we divided the sensing field area into virtual grids based on the assumed sensing range and assigned a checkpoint in each one. A Genetic Algorithm with weight metrics to solve the Travel Sales Man Problem (TSP) and decide on an optimum path for the ferry to collect data is then used. We utilized our previously published node ranking clustering algorithm (NRCA) in each virtual grid and in choosing the location for placing the ferry's checkpoints. In NRCA the decision of selecting cluster heads is based on their residual energy and their distance from their associated checkpoint which acts as a temporary sink. We simulated the proposed algorithm in MATLAB and showed its performance in terms of the network lifetime, total energy consumption and the total travel time. Moreover, we showed through simulation that nonlinear trajectory achieves a better optimization in term of network lifetime, overall energy consumed and the roundtrip travel time of the ferry compared to linear predetermined trajectory. In additional to that, we compared the performance of your algorithm to other recent algorithms in terms of the network lifetime using same and different initial energy values.

Abstract:Using a mobile sink for data collection from the sensors has been considered as a good way to prolong the network lifetime of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). To avoid the problems of long delay and data non-fresh, some previous studies selected a set of data collection points (CPs) and all the other sensors transmit their data to the closest CP in a multi-hop manner. Then the mobile sink only needs to visit and collect data from the selected CPs, reducing the path length of the mobile sink and the time required for collecting data from all sensors. This paper proposes a data collection mechanism, called DDCF, which uses a mobile sink to collect data in a heterogeneous WSN(HWSN), aiming to prolong the network lifetime while improving the surveillance coverage. The proposed DDCF mainly consists of CP selection and tree topology construction phases in each round. The CP selection phase takes into consideration multiple parameters including remaining energy, coverage contribution as well as data fusion degree and then dynamically selects CPs in each round for balancing the lifetime of CPs and improving the surveillance quality. In the tree topology construction phase, each sensor selects its parent by considering the remaining energy, data fusion degree and transmission success ratio, which aims to dynamically construct a tree topology for further reducing and balancing the energy consumptions of sensor nodes. Performance study shows that the proposed DDCF outperforms existing studies in terms of network lifetime, fairness as well as surveillance quality.

Abstract:Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are widely used in various fields such as military, industrial, and transportation for real-time monitoring, sensing, and data collection of different environments or objects. However, the development of WSNs is hindered by several limitations, including energy, storage space, computing power, and data transmission rate. Among these, the availability of power energy plays a crucial role as it directly determines the lifespan of WSN. To extend the life cycle of WSN, two key approaches are power supply improvement and energy conservation. Therefore, we propose an energy harvesting system and a low-energy-consumption mechanism for WSNs. Firstly, we delved into the energy harvesting technology of WSNs, explored the utilization of solar energy and mechanical vibration energy to ensure a continuous and dependable power supply to the sensor nodes, and analyzed the voltage output characteristics of bistable piezoelectric cantilever. Secondly, we proposed a neighbor discovery mechanism that utilizes a separation beacon, is based on reply to ACK, and can facilitate the identification of neighboring nodes. This mechanism operates at a certain duty cycle ratio, significantly reduces idle listening time and results in substantial energy savings. In comparison to the Disco and U-connect protocols, our proposed mechanism achieved a remarkable reduction of 66.67% and 75% in the worst discovery delay, respectively. Furthermore, we introduced a data fusion mechanism based on integer wavelet transform. This mechanism effectively eliminates data redundancy caused by spatiotemporal correlation, resulting in a data compression rate of 5.42. Additionally, it significantly reduces energy consumption associated with data transmission by the nodes.

Abstract:We study real time periodic query scheduling for data collection in multihop Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Given a set of heterogenous data collection queries in WSNs, each query requires the data from the source sensor nodes to be collected to the control center within a certain end-to-end delay. We first propose almost-tight necessary conditions for a set of different queries to be schedulable by a WSN. We then develop a family of efficient and effective data collection algorithms that can meet the real-time requirement under resource constraints by addressing three tightly coupled tasks: (1) routing tree construction for data collection, (2) link activity scheduling, and (3) packet-level scheduling. Our theoretical analysis for the schedulability of these algorithms show that they can achieve a constant fraction of the maximum schedulable load. For the case of overloaded networks where not all queries can be possibly satisfied, we propose an efficient approximation algorithm to select queries to maximize the total weight of selected schedulable queries. The simulations corroborate our theoretical analysis.

Abstract:A robust data collection protocol is proposed in this article for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) applications, which require high throughput, reliability, and low power. In terms of high throughput, time-division multiple access (TDMA) is more suitable than carrier sense multiple access (CSMA). Efficient TDMA protocol requires solid synchronization and more optimized time slot scheduling. Reliable data collection requires end-to-end packet retransmission. These factors inhibit the implementation of comprehensive data collection protocols. This article provides a heuristic TDMA scheduling algorithm for optimal time slot scheduling of multichannel communication. The combination of TDMA and multichannel communication enables to maintain high-throughput and low-power communication. Besides, constructive interference (CI)-based flooding technique is utilized in this article to deliver robust synchronization and efficient downward communication. Thus, we can combine CI-based flooding with packet retransmission for collection reliability. The proposed protocol is implemented on self-made sensor nodes with the Contiki operating system. The experimental results from a deployed network of 29 self-made sensor nodes show that the protocol can sustain persistent operation and provide a throughput of up to 14.74 kB/s with 100% data collection.
