Abstract:This study examines the probability of survival of online peer‐to‐peer (P2P) lending platforms in China. Our empirical findings show that shareholder's background, platforms’ risk management and institutional environment are three major factors that influence the probability of survival of P2P platforms in China. In addition, the effects of risk control and institutional environment are less pronounced in state‐owned P2P platforms. We also show that platforms that die from abscondence of owners tend to be more short‐lived than others, while platforms that die from liquidity problems are usually due to lack of high‐quality risk management techniques.
Understanding Lenders' Investment Behavior in Online Peer-to-Peer Lending: A Construal Level Theory Perspective

Abstract:Online peer-to-peer lending (i.e., P2P lending) has grown rapidly in recent years and is a new source of fixed income for investors. However, we have a rather limited understanding of factors affecting lenders’ decision making in this context, which is characterized as high risk and prosocial in nature. In our research, drawing upon incentive theory of motivation and construal level theory (CLT), we theorize how interest rate and psychological distance caused by the borrower’s demographic attributes (i.e., geographic location and educational level) relative to those of the lender jointly affect the bidding value submitted by the lender. Using a rich data set from a popular online P2P lending platform in China, we apply multiple identification strategies and estimation methods to conduct the analysis. We find that interest rate is the driving factor for the lender’s bidding value on a loan listing and that such positive effects are strengthened by the geographic and educational distance between the lender and the borrower. In addition, geographic distance decreases the lender’s bidding value on a loan listing (i.e., home bias effect), whereas educational distance increases the bidding value (i.e., educational distance effect). Theoretical contributions and practical implications are discussed.
Platform Choice in Online Peer-to-Peer Lending Markets: A Joint Structural Model

Abstract:Online peer-to-peer (P2P) lending is a two-sided market that enables direct interactions between borrowers and investors. The network effects that arise in P2P lending markets can make the decision-making process of both participant groups interdependent. However, extant research on P2P lending primarily focuses on decisions of one specific participant group without considering the interactive behaviors from the other side of the market. We attempt to fill this gap by developing a utility-based structural model that simultaneously governs both borrowers’ and investors’ platform choice decisions. Our results show that a platform’s short-term liquidity, cross-network effect (CNE), and direct-network effect (DNE) are the top three factors that positively drive investors’ platform choice. In contrast, a platform’s background, tenure, membership fee, long-term debt risk, and the average loan duration have a negative effect on their participation decision. On the borrower side, we find that a platform’s short-term liquidity, tenure, CNE, and DNE are the top four factors that attract their platform selection, while a platform’s background and membership fee will reduce their utility of choosing the platform. Overall, borrowers play a more important role than investors in the growth of a P2P lending platform. The counterfactual analyses suggest that a handful of interventions can be implemented to influence both investors’ and borrowers’ platform choice. The new information-transparency regulations issued in China are estimated to save investors more than $1.36 million. Our findings offer important managerial implications for platform managers and policy makers in the P2P lending market.
Quantifying the Value of Heterogeneous Preference: an Empirical Matching Model of Peer-to-Peer Lending

Abstract:This paper focuses on an essential, but previously underexplored, mechanism that underlies the operation of peer-to-peer (P2P) lending markets: lender-borrower matching. We model the formation of lender-borrower matches as an endogenous matching process in which agents strategically choose their partners based on their preferences. Using data from a large online lending site, we empirically investigate the determinants of lender-borrower matching and explore their importance. Our structural estimates suggest that heterogeneous preference leads to various matching patterns across different types of lenders and borrowers. Experienced, hasty, and male lenders exhibit more tolerance toward borrowers with a lower credit score than do their counterparts. Based on these estimates, we perform counterfactual analyses to quantify the economic value of P2P lending. Note that P2P lending differs from traditional lending by following a decentralized matching process under which heterogeneous preference is maintained. We quantify the matching value from the decentralized matching process in P2P lending and compare it to that of its centralized counterpart for which heterogeneous preference is not respected. We find that P2P lending gains value from heterogeneous preference and that a more centralized matching process hurts large and active markets less than for small and inactive markets. Further, an agent-level analysis shows that more experienced lenders and low credit score borrowers are more vulnerable to a credit-score-ruled centralized matching process. Our findings offer managerial implications for credit scoring and information disclosure policy.
Evaluating the Regulatory Scheme for Internet Finance in China: the Case of Peer-to-peer Lending

Abstract:This article assesses the potential risks associated with Internet finance in China, and discusses the implications for the regulatory framework, through a case study of peer-to-peer lending platforms. The analysis uses publicly available platform-level data up to December 2015 to identify the risk factors associated with different platforms. The analysis employs the Kaplan-Meier method to estimate survival probability, and uses duration analysis to identify how each risk factor contributes to the survival probability and life expectancy of each platform. The findings show that platforms with recent establishment dates, missing key information, a narrow range of interest rates, extreme interest rates, undiversified projects, and guarantees for principal and interest tend to have lower survival probability and shorter life expectancy. Based on these findings, the article assesses the appropriateness of the regulatory framework the authorities have recently proposed: whether the platforms should be treated as an information intermediary instead of a credit intermediary, whether the main regulation responsibilities should be assigned to local governments or industry associations, and whether new entrants should be required to have a minimum of registered capital. The article also makes some recommendations on information disclosure and risk management requirements for the peer-to-peer lending industry.

Abstract:This paper analyzes lenders' pricing strategies in the business-to-customer (B2C) unsecured loan market by using a proprietary dataset of approximately 3 million unsecured consumer loans from a B2C online retailer in China. We find that lenders' decisions to invite customers are based on customers' credit rating and age and that lenders increase credit limits and charge higher interest rates for solicited riskier borrowers than for unsolicited riskier borrowers. This phenomenon was exacerbated after the passage of the China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) Act. We develop a model of revolving credit contract design. The model's predictions are consistent with our empirical findings.

Abstract:P2P lending is an emerging Internet-based application where individuals can directly borrow money from each other. The past decade has witnessed the rapid development and prevalence of online P2P lending platforms, examples of which include Prosper, LendingClub, and Kiva. Meanwhile, extensive research has been done that mainly focuses on the studies of platform mechanisms and transaction data. In this article, we provide a comprehensive survey on the research about P2P lending, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the first focused effort in this field. Specifically, we first provide a systematic taxonomy for P2P lending by summarizing different types of mainstream platforms and comparing their working mechanisms in detail. Then, we review and organize the recent advances on P2P lending from various perspectives (e.g., economics and sociology perspective, and data-driven perspective). Finally, we propose our opinions on the prospects of P2P lending and suggest some future research directions in this field. Meanwhile, throughout this paper, some analysis on real-world data collected from Prosper and Kiva are also conducted.
The Effects of Auction‐based Pricing Mechanisms and Social Characteristics on Microloan Performance

Abstract:We empirically investigate the effects of a borrower's choice of auction‐based pricing mechanisms and her social characteristics on listing outcomes and loan performance in online lending. Analyzing data from a leading online lending platform, we find that the borrower's choice of borrower pricing mechanism and being affiliated with a group are both associated with higher funding probability; thus, the lenders may interpret them as positive signals of creditworthiness of the borrower. However, these signals are misleading to the lenders as they are actually both associated with higher default risk and greater credit loss (in case of default). In addition, we find that the positive effect of the borrower's social characteristics on funding probability is smaller when she chooses the borrower pricing mechanism. Moreover, we find that although exerting a positive (negative) effect on loan performance, the number of friends (group affiliation) of the borrower aggravates (reduces) the effect of the group affiliation (number of friends) on loan default risk. Another interesting finding is that, despite having an adverse effect on loan performance, a borrower's group affiliation, can mitigate the negative effects of the borrower's requested amount on listing outcomes and loan performance. Our analysis also shows that, in the context of online microloan lending, a borrower's choice of auction‐based pricing mechanisms is a better predictor of loan performance than some other traditional credit‐related information.

Guarantee Mechanisms and Intermediary Nature of P2P Lending Market in China——Model Construction and Quantitative Analysis Based on Investor Behavior

Abstract:Analyzing the guarantee mechanisms and intermediary nature of P2P Lending Market in China has significant meaning. Based on open data of the lending platform RenRenDai. com, this paper studies the guarantee mechanism of P2P lending and its intermediary nature by constructing a theoretical model and then proceeding data imitating analysis with regression methods. We find that, the competition of default compensating rate is the primary cause that leads the platform to be a credit intermediary, and we can calculate the optimal default compensating area. On this basis, this paper analyzes the influence of guarantee mechanism on the behavior of investors: when the platform pays high default compensates, investors tend to invest randomly. When the platform lowers the default compensating rate, it can stimulate the investors to invest actively. Based on the corresponding relationship between maximum default compensating rate and default rate,we can draw the intermediate spectrum. In the mean time,in order to prevent the accumulating risk raised by guaranteeing mechanism, platform enhances its deciding rights which promotes itself to take the role of credit intermediary. Based on our empirical results,this paper argues that the key to improve the status quo of the P2P industry is to make corresponding policy. Specifically, this includes loweringdefault compensating rate, restricting industry access,establishing industry order and so on. For the P2P platform, it should enhance the risk prevention mechanism to guarantee the rights of investors and reveal more useful information to help the investors make effective decision.

Abstract:The low success rate of lending is the main drawback of development of online P2P lending platforms in China. Based on the theory of social capital, this study analysed the influence factors of success rate of P2P lending platform in China, using social network method and multiple linear regression model. Soft information, such as bidding record, has been creatively employed to study the corresponding topics. Data used in this study comes from the largest online P2P lending platform in China. The results show that: compared with other influence factors, the bidding record has a more significant effect on the success rate, and the users depend more on the social capital; the bidding records reduce the asymmetry of information, and help increasing the success rate of lending and decreasing the cost of online P2P lending.

Abstract:Peer-to-Peer (P2P) lending platform has experienced a prosperity in China from 2007 to 2016. However, in recent years, the risks and problems of the P2P platform increase rapidly. To figure out the reasons, this article establishes a theoretical model to analyze the risk of platform from the investors' side. Through the model, we find that the higher the degree of the risk aversion of the investors, the higher the level of risks of the P2P lending platform. The model also indicates that the ratio of the institutional investors over the retail investors, the intermediary fee paid for the platform, as well as the probability of being arrested for the platform are factors that can influence the risk of the P2P platform. On this basis, we provide a new perspective to understand the mechanism of the P2P platform's risks, and we suggest that to improve the clauses of qualified investors and to give adequate pricing power to the P2P platform can be helpful to reduce the risks of the platform.

Abstract:We analyze how retail investors price the credit risk of online P"P consumer loans in a reverse auction framework where personal interaction is absent. The explained interest rate variance is considerably larger than in comparable studies using bank loan data. This is unexpected, given the difference in experience and the limited set of information provided to the investor. Factors representing economic status significantly influence lender evaluations of the borrower's credit risk. Previous studies on gender discrimination found mixed results. We show that this is likely due to simplified specifications and find surprising results: male borrowers are charged a higher interest rates, conditional on being married and having children. Overall, our results indicate that retail investors exhibit a strong degree of predictability in this weakly regulated market for online P2P consumer loans.

Pricing Strategies in BigTech Lending: Evidence from China

Abstract:This paper analyzes a BigTech lender's pricing strategies in the business-to-customer unsecured loan market using a proprietary data set of consumer loans in China. We find that the credit rating constructed by the BigTech lender is informative of the customers' default risk. Moreover, the interest rate decreases and the credit limit increases with the credit rating. Interestingly, the BigTech lender charges different interest rates to its customers based on the customer channel, although it does not provide information about the customers' default risk. Following the passage of the China Banking Regulatory Commission Act, which reduced credit market competition, the BigTech lender increased the current rate and decreased the credit limit. We rationalize these empirical findings in a simple model of credit contract design.

Abstract:Online peer-to-peer (P2P) lending occurs at the intersection of the sharing economy and e-commerce, and has developed into an immense finance industry in China. This study evaluates the business performance of the P2P finance industry and is the first to examine P2P lending activities from an efficiency perspective. We apply an improved version of the modified slacks-based measure that accommodates non-controllable inputs, undesirable inputs and outputs under a two-dimensional growth and operating efficiency paradigm. The results confirm the presence of contradictions between two types of efficiency in P2P platforms. They also show that listed companies, platforms with venture capital investment, and platforms funded by state-owned capital exhibit higher growth efficiency, while platforms with financial group involvement and diversified ownership show increased operating efficiency. Further, management incentives and the relative economic level of the platform location have no significant impact on efficiency.

Abstract:Online Peer-to-Peer (P2P) lending has emerged recently. This micro loan market could offer certain benefits to both borrowers and lenders. Using data from the Lending Club, which is one of the popular online P2P lending houses, this article explores the P2P loan characteristics, evaluates their credit risk and measures loan performances. We find that credit grade, debt-to-income ratio, FICO score and revolving line utilization play an important role in loan defaults. Loans with lower credit grade and longer duration are associated with high mortality rate. The result is consistent with the Cox Proportional Hazard test which suggests that the hazard rate or the likelihood of the loan default increases with the credit risk of the borrowers. Finally, we find that higher interest rates charged on the high-risk borrowers are not enough to compensate for higher probability of the loan default. The Lending Club must find ways to attract high FICO score and high-income borrowers in order to sustain their businesses.

Abstract:Online peer-to-peer (P2P) lending has empowered individual lenders to make investment decisions anytime and anywhere. However, there is scant research effort on exploring the time of day effect and further time-ITs relationship in the crowdfunding literature. Drawing on ego depletion theory, this study proposes a novel theoretical framework of diurnal variations on lenders’ investment decisions. We collect and analyze the data from a large online P2P lending platform in China. Based on multiple estimation models and identification strategies, we find robust evidence that lenders bid the largest amount of money in the morning, the moderate amount in the afternoon, and the smallest amount in the evening. Moreover, they bid most quickly in the afternoon, moderately in the morning, and most slowly in the evening. Furthermore, the diurnal variations in terms of bidding amount and bidding speed become more prominent in touch-based interaction, compared with mouse-based interaction. Our empirical findings contribute to extant investment decision making research in the crowdfunding literature and the time-ITs relationship discourse in the IS research, and offer critical managerial implications to marketing strategies of loan listings for platform managers.
