Abstract:A natural metric in 2-manifold surfaces is to use geodesic distance. If a 2-manifold surface is represented by a triangle mesh T, the geodesic metric on T can be computed exactly using computational geometry methods. Previous work for establishing the geodesic metric on T only supports using half-edge data structures; i.e., each edge e in T is split into two halves (he1,he2) and each half-edge corresponds to one of two faces incident to e. In this paper, we prove that the exact-geodesic structures on two half-edges of e can be merged into one structure associated with e. Four merits are achieved based on the properties which are studied in this paper: (1) Existing CAD systems that use edge-based data structures can directly add the geodesic distance function without changing the kernel to a half-edge data structure; (2) To find the geodesic path from inquiry points to the source, the MMP algorithm can be run in an on-the-fly fashion such that the inquiry points are covered by correct wedges; (3) The MMP algorithm is sped up by pruning unnecessary wedges during the wedge propagation process; (4) The storage of the MMP algorithm is reduced since fewer wedges need to be stored in an edge-based data structure. Experimental results show that when compared to the classic half-edge data structure, the edge-based implementation of the MMP algorithm reduces running time by 44% and storage by 29% on average.

Abstract:Geodesics are used widely in computer graphics and other field.MMP is a sophisticated method while geodesics are calculated on triangular meshes.We achieved a precision geodesics algorithm based on MMP,and modified the error which occurred when adopting the Vitaly Surazhsky's method.At the window propagating,lamp-house-radial method was used instead of using an approximate type.In dealing with window intersection,the complex and multiplex sorts were treated with layered enumerate type.A clear and comprehensible algorithm used in backtracing.At last,the result was presented,the run time is little more than Vitaly Surazhsky's to some exerd,but the proposed method is precise.

Abstract:Computing geodesic distances on 2-manifold meshes is a fundamental problem in computational geometry. To date, two notable classes of exact algorithms, namely, the Mitchell–Mount–Papadimitriou (MMP) algorithm and the Chen–Han (CH) algorithm, have been widely studied. For an arbitrary triangle mesh with n vertices, these algorithms have space complexity of O(n2). In this paper, we prove that both algorithms have Θ(n1.5) space complexity on a completely regular triangulation (i.e., all triangles are equilateral).

Abstract:Computing exact geodesic paths on triangular mesh surfaces is an important operation in many geometric algorithms. In this paper we show several particular examples that reveal four interesting properties and three observations of exact geodesic computations on triangular mesh surfaces. The properties are proved and observations are drawn from experimental results using practical models. With these properties and observations, we present a new perspective of the classical MMP algorithm and the readers may find a clearer picture of how to code the MMP algorithm.

Abstract:The computation of exact geodesics on triangle meshes is a widely used operation in computer-aided design and computer graphics. Practical algorithms for computing such exact geodesics have been recently proposed by Surazhsky et al. [5]. By applying these geometric algorithms to real-world data, degenerate cases frequently appear. In this paper we classify and enumerate all the degenerate cases in a systematic way. Based on the classification, we present solutions to handle all the degenerate cases consistently and correctly. The common users may find the present techniques useful when they implement a robust code of computing exact geodesic paths on meshes.

Abstract:The Hausdorff distance is one of the most fundamental metrics for comparing 3D shapes. To compute the Hausdorff distance efficiently from a triangular mesh A to another triangular mesh B, one needs to cull the unnecessary triangles on A quickly. These triangles have no chance to improve the Hausdorff distance estimation, that is the parts with local upper bound smaller than the global lower bound. The local upper bound estimation should be tight, use fast distance computation, and involve a small number of triangles in B during the reduction phase for efficiency. In this paper, we propose to use point-triangle distance, and only involve at most four triangles in B in the reduction phase. Comparing with the state-of-the-art proposed by Tang et al. in 2009, which uses more costly triangle-triangle distance and may involve a large number of triangles in reduction phase, our local upper bound estimation is faster, and with only a small impact on the tightness of the bound on error estimation. Such a more economic strategy boosts the overall performance significantly. Experiments on the Thingi10K dataset show that our method can achieve several (even over 20) times speedup on average. On a few models with different placements and resolutions, we show that close placement and large difference in resolution bring big challenges to Hausdorff distance computation, and explain why our method can achieve more significant speedup on challenging cases.
Differentiable Geodesic Distance for Intrinsic Minimization on Triangle Meshes

Abstract:Computing intrinsic distances on discrete surfaces is at the heart of many minimization problems in geometry processing and beyond. Solving these problems is extremely challenging as it demands the computation of on-surface distances along with their derivatives. We present a novel approach for intrinsic minimization of distance-based objectives defined on triangle meshes. Using a variational formulation of shortest-path geodesics, we compute first and second-order distance derivatives based on the implicit function theorem, thus opening the door to efficient Newton-type minimization solvers. We demonstrate our differentiable geodesic distance framework on a wide range of examples, including geodesic networks and membranes on surfaces of arbitrary genus, two-way coupling between hosting surface and embedded system, differentiable geodesic Voronoi diagrams, and efficient computation of Karcher means on complex shapes. Our analysis shows that second-order descent methods based on our differentiable geodesics outperform existing first-order and quasi-Newton methods by large margins.

Abstract:This paper addresses the challenge of representing geodesic distance fields on triangular meshes in a piecewise linear manner. Unlike general scalar fields, which often assume piecewise linear changes within each triangle, geodesic distance fields pose a unique difficulty due to their non-differentiability at ridge points, where multiple shortest paths may exist. An interesting observation is that the geodesic distance field exhibits an approximately linear change if each triangle is further decomposed into sub-regions by the ridge curve. However, computing the geodesic ridge curve is notoriously difficult. Even when using exact algorithms to infer the ridge curve, desirable results may not be achieved, akin to the well-known medial-axis problem. In this paper, we propose a two-stage algorithm. In the first stage, we employ Dijkstra's algorithm to cut the surface open along the dual structure of the shortest path tree. This operation allows us to extend the surface outward (resembling a double cover but with distinctions), enabling the discovery of longer geodesic paths in the extended surface. In the second stage, any mature geodesic solver, whether exact or approximate, can be employed to predict the real ridge curve. Assuming the fast marching method is used as the solver, despite its limitation of having a single marching direction in a triangle, our extended surface contains multiple copies of each triangle, allowing various geodesic paths to enter the triangle and facilitating ridge curve computation. We further introduce a simple yet effective filtering mechanism to rigorously ensure the connectivity of the output ridge curve. Due to its merits, including robustness and compatibility with any geodesic solver, our algorithm holds great potential for a wide range of applications. We demonstrate its utility in accurate geodesic distance querying and high-fidelity visualization of geodesic iso-lines.

Abstract:Intrinsic Delaunay triangulation (IDT) is a fundamental data structure in computational geometry and computer graphics. However, except for some theoretical results, such as existence and uniqueness, little progress has been made towards computing IDT on simplicial surfaces. To date the only way for constructing IDTs is the edge-flipping algorithm, which iteratively flips the non-Delaunay edge to be locally Delaunay. Although the algorithm is conceptually simple and guarantees to stop in finite steps, it has no known time complexity. Moreover, the edge-flipping algorithm may produce non-regular triangulations, which contain self-loops and/or faces with only two edges. In this paper, we propose a new method for constructing IDT on manifold triangle meshes. Based on the duality of geodesic Voronoi diagrams, our method can guarantee the resultant IDTs are regular. Our method has a theoretical worst-case time complexity $O(n^2\log n)$ for a mesh with $n$ vertices. We observe that most real-world models are far from their Delaunay triangulations, thus, the edge-flipping algorithm takes many iterations to fix the non-Delaunay edges. In contrast, our method is non-iterative and insensitive to the number of non-Delaunay edges. Empirically, it runs in linear time $O(n)$ on real-world models.

Abstract:We introduced an extension of traditional geodesic. Local neighbourhood of smooth curve on manifold shows good propositions which make it possible to construct a geodesic mapping from the neighbourhood to a rectangular district of UV-plane. Length of subsurface extended from smooth curve is defined according to the parameterization induced by geodesic mapping. And extended geodesic is the curve with minimal length of subsurface it extends. We also proposed a constrained mass-spring based approach to solve extended geodesic on discrete mesh. Experimental result shows that it is a high precision approximation for problems of measurement where the path can not be reduced as a single curve.

Abstract:Geodesic, the shortest path between two points on a three-dimensional surface, is analogous to a straight line between two points on a plane, and is an important concept in differential geometry. It is utilized extensively in computer graphics, image processing, computational geometry, computer vision, and other fields. Geodesic algorithms have also been studied extensively since the 1980s, with many researchers proposing various practical algorithms. This paper summarizes the definition, property, and algorithms associated with the shortest geodesic and straightest geodesic on a mesh after introducing the concept of geodesic on smooth and polyhedral surfaces. The main algorithms discussed are discrete geodesic algorithms on polyhedral surfaces, including the exact shortest geodesic algorithms and the approximate shortest geodesic algorithms on integral meshes and defective meshes. Various algorithms are also analyzed in depth, with the basic underlying idea and method of realization of each algorithm discussed in detail, and the merits and demerits of each algorithm compared from different perspectives. Further, their time complexity, space complexity, and fields of application are also compared. Finally, the prospects for discrete geodesic research are discussed with a view towards deeper study of geodesic.

Abstract:Given a triangulated surface, a polyhedral metric could be constructed by gluing Euclidean triangles edge-to-edge. We carefully describe the construction and prove that such a polyhedral metric is the only intrinsic metric on the glued surface that preserves the lengths of the curves on the Euclidean triangles. We also discuss the edge length coordinates of the Teichmüller space of the polyhedral metrics on a marked surface.

Abstract:We study the combinatorial complexity of Voronoi diagram of point sites on a general triangulated 2-manifold surface, based on the geodesic metric. Given a triangulated 2-manifold T of n faces and a set of m point sites S={s1,s2,…,sm}∈T, we prove that the complexity of Voronoi diagram VT(S) of S on T is O(mn) if the genus of T is zero. For a genus-g manifold T in which the samples in S are dense enough and the resulting Voronoi diagram satisfies the closed ball property, we prove that the complexity of Voronoi diagram VT(S) is O((m+g)n).

Abstract:Querying the geodesic distance field on a given smooth surface is a fundamental research pursuit in computer graphics. Both accuracy and smoothness serve as common indicators for evaluating geodesic algorithms. In this study, we argue that ensuring that the norm of the triangle-wise estimated gradients is not larger than 1 is preferable compared to the widely used eikonal condition. Inspired by this, we formulate the geodesic distance field problem as a Quadratically Constrained Linear Programming (QCLP) problem. This formulation can be further adapted into a Quadratically Constrained Quadratic Programming (QCQP) problem by incorporating considerations for smoothness requirements. Specifically, when enforcing a Hessian-energy-based smoothing term, our formulation, named QCQP-Hessian, effectively mitigates the cusps in the geodesic isolines within the near-ridge area while maintaining accuracy in the off-ridge area. We conducted extensive experiments to demonstrate the accuracy and smoothness advantages of QCQP-Hessian.

Abstract:Intrinsic Delaunay triangulation (IDT) naturally generalizes Delaunay triangulation from R2 to curved surfaces. Due to many favorable properties, the IDT whose vertex set includes all mesh vertices is of particular interest in polygonal mesh processing. To date, the only way for constructing such IDT is the edge-flipping algorithm, which iteratively flips non-Delaunay edges to become locally Delaunay. Although this algorithm is conceptually simple and guarantees to terminate in finite steps, it has no known time complexity and may also produce triangulations containing faces with only two edges. This article develops a new method to obtain proper IDTs on manifold triangle meshes. We first compute a geodesic Voronoi diagram (GVD) by taking all mesh vertices as generators and then find its dual graph. The sufficient condition for the dual graph to be a proper triangulation is that all Voronoi cells satisfy the so-called closed ball property. To guarantee the closed ball property everywhere, a certain sampling criterion is required. For Voronoi cells that violate the closed ball property, we fix them by computing topologically safe regions, in which auxiliary sites can be added without changing the topology of the Voronoi diagram beyond them. Given a mesh with n vertices, we prove that by adding at most O(n) auxiliary sites, the computed GVD satisfies the closed ball property, and hence its dual graph is a proper IDT. Our method has a theoretical worst-case time complexity O(n2 + tnlog n), where t is the number of obtuse angles in the mesh. Computational results show that it empirically runs in linear time on real-world models.
Manhattan geodesics and the boundary of the space of metric structures on hyperbolic groups

Abstract:For any non-elementary hyperbolic group $\Gamma$, we find an outer automorphism invariant geodesic bicombing for the space of metric structures on $\Gamma$ equipped with a symmetrized version of the Thurston metric on Techimüller space. We construct and study a boundary for this space and show that it contains many well-known pseudo metrics including those coming from actions on $\text{CAT}(0)$ cube complexes, real trees and coned-off Cayley graphs. As corollaries we deduce length spectrum rigidity results, regularity results for Manhattan curves, optimal growth rate results for Anosov representations and results regarding continuous extensions of translation distance functions to the space of geodesic currents. Using our results for geodesic currents we settle a conjecture of Bonahon in the negative.
