Abstract:AbstractThe Arctic Ocean has experienced significant sea ice loss over recent decades, shifting towards a thinner and more mobile seasonal ice regime. However, the impacts of these transformations on the upper ocean dynamics of the biologically productive Pacific Arctic continental shelves remain underexplored. Here, we quantified the summer upper mixed layer depth and analyzed its interannual to decadal evolution with sea ice and atmospheric forcing, using hydrographic observations and model reanalysis from 1996 to 2021. Before 2006, a shoaling summer mixed layer was associated with sea ice loss and surface warming. After 2007, however, the upper mixed layer reversed to a generally deepening trend due to markedly lengthened open water duration, enhanced wind-induced mixing, and reduced ice meltwater input. Our findings reveal a shift in the primary drivers of upper ocean dynamics, with surface buoyancy flux dominant initially, followed by a shift to wind forcing despite continued sea ice decline. These changes in upper ocean structure and forcing mechanisms may have substantial implications for the marine ecosystem, potentially contributing to unusual fall phytoplankton blooms and intensified ocean acidification observed in the past decade.

Abstract:In North America and Asia, extreme cold weather characterized the winter of 2017–18. At the same time, the Pacific, the Bering Sea, and the Atlantic Arctic regions experienced anomalously low sea ice extent in the early winter. The jet stream dividing cold Arctic air from warm air deviated from normal zonal patterns northward into the ice-free areas north of the Bering Strait. Large southward jet stream pathways formed over Asia and America, allowing cold air to spread into Asia and the southern areas of North America. We hypothesise that the late autumn Bering Strait sea-ice anomaly and Pacific atmospheric rivers were partially responsible for the cold winter. We used data analyses and numerical experiments to test this hypothesis. We propose a positive feedback mechanism between the sea ice anomaly and atmospheric river activity, with anomalous south winds toward the sea ice anomaly potentially leading to more warm water injected by the wind-driven current through the Bering Strait. Our findings suggest that Poleward propagation of the atmospheric rivers made upper air warm, leading to their upgliding, which further heated the overlying air, causing poleward jet meanders. As a part of this response the jet stream meandered southward over Asia and North America, resulting in cold intrusions. We speculate that the positive feedback mechanism observed during the 2017–18 winter could recur in future years when the sea-ice reduction in the Pacific Arctic interacts with enhanced atmospheric river activity.

Abstract:This study deals with the correlation between ice extent in the Sea of Okhotsk and the interannual variability of winter (December–February) air temperature over the subtropical Western Pacific from 1979 to 2008. The analysis indicates that the increase in sea ice extent coincides not only with cooling over the Sea of Okhotsk and the adjacent area, but also with significant warming over the subtropical Western Pacific that extends from the surface to the middle troposphere. This meridional dipole pattern of tropospheric temperature anomalies (cooling in the high latitudes and warming in the low latitudes) primarily results from dynamical processes driven by the large-scale atmospheric circulation change. A heat budget diagnosis reveals that when ice extent in the Sea of Okhotsk increases by one standard deviation, the tropospheric air temperature over the subtropical Western Pacific rises by about 0.25°C. It also suggests that the adiabatic heating and stationary eddy heat flux convergence may be the most important factors, which account for 30 and 15% of the warming, respectively. In addition, these two factors also coordinate to result in significant cooling over the Sea of Okhotsk and the adjacent regions.

Abstract:In Kamae et al (2019), we made mistakes explaining the method for detecting atmospheric rivers (ARs) in the global warming simulations. The anomalies in vertically integrated water vapor transport (IVT) used in the AR detection were calculated by subtracting IVT climatology in the global warming simulations, not IVT climatology in the current climate simulation.Section 2.2 'Future projection' 1st paragraph, the last sentence should read 'The AR detection scheme described in section 2.1 and used in Kamae et al (2017b) was applied to the outputs of global warming simulation. Note that the IVT anomaly used in the AR detection was calculated by subtracting IVT climatology in the global warming simulations.'.Section 3.1 'AR response to climate warming' 1st paragraph, the last two sentences 'The general increasing trend of ARs under climate warming can be attributed to thermodynamic effect (e.g. Lavers et al 2013, Gao et al 2015). Abstract:Abstract. The Arctic temperature changes are closely linked to midlatitude weather variability and extreme events, which has attracted much attention in recent decades. Syntheses of proxy data from poleward of 60° N indicate that there was asymmetric cooling of -1.54 °C and -0.61 °C for Atlantic Arctic and Pacific Arctic during the Holocene, respectively. We also present a similar consistent cooling pattern from an accelerated transient Holocene climate simulation based on the Community Earth System Model. Our results indicate that the asymmetric Holocene Arctic cooling trend is dominated by the winter temperature variability with -0.67 °C cooling for Atlantic Arctic and 0.09 °C warming for Pacific Arctic, which is particularly pronounced at the proxy sites. Our findings indicate that sea ice in the North Atlantic expanded significantly during the Late Holocene, while a sea ice retreat is seen in the North Pacific, amplifying the cooling in the Atlantic Arctic by the sea ice feedback. The positive Arctic dipole pattern, which promotes warm southerly winds to the North Pacific, offsets parts of the cooling trend in Pacific Arctic. The Arctic dipole pattern also causes sea ice expansion in the North Atlantic, further amplifying the cooling asymmetry. We found that the temperature asymmetry is more pronounced in a simulation driven only by orbital forcing, indicating that the orbital modulation of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, which in turn links to the Arctic dipole pattern, further affects the temperature asymmetry.
